The Stonemasons Inn Restaurant in Chichester

My wife and I called in for a pub meal on our way to Bognor, very quaint old fashioned pub and a very pleasant young lady behind the bar (think her name was Lucie). We both had the Cumberland sausages and mash which was very mediocre, but to be fair the sausages were very nice. The thing that concerned us mostly was the exceptional high price I.e.£12:50 each for sausage & mash (which really didn't fill us!). as a yorkshireman I believe it to be a bit overpriced for this type of meal. 2 sausage & mash and 2 cups of tea £35:25 in total, not very good value for money. But it was a charming pub and we may return if prices come down.

One of the friendliest places in Sussex.Covid safe, excellent choice of beers and beautiful lunch, what more do you want?Lucy made us feel very special and is an asset to the business with her friendly smile and attention to detail.Definitely will return very soon.Thank you

Ran out of beer and still charged service and beer 10% increase in beer since start of lockdown will not return in near future

Rang at 18:55 Thursday 8th October ,to book a table for diner, abrupt lady said I’ll ask the kitchen ,abrupt lady said kitchen closed ,I said closed at 18:55 your website says order till 9pm , abrupt lady replied we’re not busy so kitchen closed early ..... Well I thought with your attitude I not surprised your not busy, we went to another local pub that evening called the Badger and told a local couple of our experience regarding the Stonemasons they just laughed and said with there reputation “ you dodged a bullet “ ...... every cloud !!

Amazing service and food I had a meal with my 5 year old daughter, father and his girlfriend, the staff were very welcoming and friendly nothing was too much trouble, on a couple of occasions I looked around for an extra spoon or something I needed the staff picked up on this and were straight there providing what we needed without having to ask, the food was amazing even my fussy 5 year old said how good the food was, definitely recommend this restaurant/pub. It was clean and very well presented, we had a very enjoyable evening my daughter loved being able to request her favourite songs and enjoyed herself immensely thank you stonemasons for an outstanding visit many thanks shelley and family.

Accomodating staff. Nice courtyard garden. I was disappointed with my meal but staff were very obliging and changed my meal. Will come back.

We dropped in here after a trip to Petworth House needing a bite to eat. The pub was full but the manager was able to find us a table after 15 mins. Lunch was well worth the wait! I had a roast which was piled high and delicious. Others in the group had the sausage and mash, fish and chips and Cajun burgers.. everyone was more than happy with their choices. The manager and waiting staff were helpful and friendly -attentive without imposing.We will definitely return in the future.

Really nice pub with friendly helpful staff with lovely home made food. My husband had the Steak burger and I had the same but replaced the meat with Halloumi, both were excellent

Stayed the night while visiting family. Room could do with some tlc but very clean and comfortable. The staff and customers very friendly made us very welcome. Breakfast very good. Will stay again.

A lunch for some 40 members of a club was efficiently catered for with good organisation and a festive meal giving value for money. The restaurant has two interconnecting larger rooms which proved ideal for a substantial corporate meal. The atmosphere was sociable and the service was courteous. Thumbs up to the chef and the staff !

We met friends for a pub lunch and were very impressed with the quality of the food and service at this lovely little place.

Met my daughter for lunch with a friend of mine had a lovely meal here. Lovely atmosphere with a log fire and beams. We hade a great meal and very good service and a reasonable price. Would highly recommend this pub. We will return

One of the friendliest pubs we have been to for years.Great local and national ales on offer and all kept beautifully fresh.They keep the menu simple but the food is delicious( we had the O’Hagons sausages with mash).Lucy behind the bar very professional and courteous, thank you.

Saturday afternoon about 2pm pulled in for a pub lunch. Menu was nothing like what is shown on their web site! Had the creamy baked macaroni. Not creamy, was't macaroni pasta, it wasn't baked or very hot. My guess was a packet of pasta bake with hot water. Cost me £10.50 Very poor value....and the smallest bottle of coca cola I'd ever seen cost me £2.50I go past this Inn once a month, and thought I'd give it at try. Wish I hadn't bottherd.Will not vist again.

We stopped here for a quick lunch and had a BLT sandwich and squid rings. My wife's BLT was excellent, my squid rings were a disappointment, they were very greasy and the actual ring had shrivelled up to almost nothing. I was given 5 rings and at £6.95, this is £1.39 per ring! The service was good and pleasant, the atmosphere was a typical old pub and was enjoyable. I think I just made the wrong choice.

We stopped mid journey for lunch and we very pleased with the service, food and drink. The staff were very pleasant and made us feel welcome. Two different types of burger, one fish and chips and no complaints. I would certainly recommend a visit.

Have driven past this place on so many occasions but never stopped as always on the way to somewhere else. However this time made the effort to pull in and was well rewarded. A friendly welcome and a good (but not fancy) menu. Portion size was excellent, filling without stuffing you. Overall a very good meal and a place I'll return to.

Our 2nd visit in the last couple of weeks, think there are new Landlords. Definitely didn't disappoint, friendly welcome and excellent food, infact we cleared our plates and definitely needed the good long walk we had after in Fittleworth Woods.

After visiting Petworth House, we were looking for a spot of lunch. We came across the Stonemaker’s straight away. Pimm’s in a sundappled garden, lovely service and a wonderful lunch at a very good price. Highly recommended.

Spent the night here, nice comfortable room ,lovely staff. Really good value. Didn't eat in the restaurant but the breakfast was good.

Came here for Sunday lunch with the family. There were 7 adults and 3 children, we had booked and were put in a part of the restaurant which was out the way, it was nice because we didn’t feel like we were disturbing people and we had privacy.

Early lunch on a Saturday. Choice not bad though would have liked sandwiches and naughty chips. Staff ab fab, garden could with cheering up a bit. Inside is lovely. Food more than satisfactory. Bonus here is also parking.

Arranged to meet friend at 10.30 as it was a half way point for us, for brunch, served 8 -11.30 as per their very nice looking website , got there all closed up opening time on door 12 ! To be honest it didn’t look any where near as good , all a bit unloved looking , still very good fresh scones in Petworth House

Ten members of family plus two dogs met at the pub last minute so no reservation made for lunch , however the staff could not have been more helpful . After a short wait they set up a table and we all enjoyed an excellent lunch . The dogs had fun with some others that were in the pub ! We will return and will book first . Please thank your Kiwi staff who were so helpful

We have been to the Stonemasons several times before and have always enjoyed the food, drink and atmosphere there. People tending the bar and restaurant are also very friendly and welcoming which is important too. Dog friendly also. This time we just settled for a couple of beers and the Ham, Egg and Chips which is not really a challenge for the kitchen but was good anyway.

We were in a group of 12 and the service was poor as we had to keep asking for things like serving spoons for the veg and spoons for pudding (some of which were soup) which should have been already on the table. I should have had parsnips and carrots but it was swede and hard carrots. My roast potatoes were hard too and not very roasted so I asked for them to be changed but got more of the same . No water was offered so I asked for some and they only brought me a glass.

This is the 3rd time we have eaten here after a long walk with the dogs in Petworth Park, and the food and service has been consistently good and seasonably priced.

We were staying at The Stonemasons Inn and on arrival on the Saturday morning we booked a table in the restaurant for dinner that evening. We booked for 8.00 pm - what we weren't told is that the kitchen closes at 8.30 pm!

We called here in the summer and ate outside - lovely generous portions of food and very pleasant staff. This time we were inside with a roaring fire. The food was just as delicious and staff were as pleasant. My wife had the 3 fishcakes except they are now 2 because most diners were serious challenged by 3 oversize home made cakes. I had gammon, egg and chips. I would have preferred a slab of gammon rather than thin slices but it didn't spoil the enjoyment at all. we shall call in again.

We had a good meal in what is basically a village pub with benefits! The menu has standard pub food at reasonable prices plus some interesting specials. The barmaid is welcoming and cheerful and on the cold day when we last went in we were pleased to see the fire had been lit. The pub is very handy for visits to Petworth House (NT) and Park (good for walks). The village is full of antique shops and you can visit the very nice church with some interesting architectural features, but don't expect to park in the village! It is not a long walk from the NT car park or park at the pub.

Booked in for a birthday meal for my son’s 14th birthday, it was a fantastic evening and my husband enjoyed it too.

We last visited here 3 years ago and a lot can change during that time. We were out on bikes and it was nice bright but cold'ish day.

We really enjoyed our Sunday Lunch at the Stonemasons. Good hearty portions of delicious traditional roast and plenty of veg. Such a welcomed change from the 'designer meals' often offered! Lovely friendly staff, good value. An all round enjoyable meal! We'll come again. Thank you Stonemasons!

We passed the stonemasons after a lovely morning at Petworth house, what a pleasant surprise. Great service from friendly bar staff and lovely food. I had the sausages and they were perfect.

Nice place to eat and drink very relaxing place nice atmosphere. Wood fire in the winter lovely restaurant for a romantic meal.

We stayed on Saturday for a night in a room called Mrs Smith's Room,this was a really comfortable room,. The evening meal and breakfast was very good as were the staff who looked after us.

Deciding at the last minute to take my daughter to lunch we needed somewhere close by.

Stopped here completely random and what a great surprise , great homely oak beamed pub, very warm welcome from all the staff, the food was excellent, and very reasonably priced, cannot praise it enough, the staff went the extra mile for us and would recommend this pub to everyone!

Our first choice for lunch had stopped serving food when we arrived but we found the Stonemasons was still going so we went there instead and I'm glad we did. Good bar menu, but we went for the house special bacon cheese burger which was pricey (£12) but excellent - a really well stacked bun with a good portion of chips and side salad too. And it is the first pub I've been to in a very long time where I was offered a taster of the draught beer before they pulled my pint. Now my first choice for a pub lunch after stomping the South Downs.

We came across this place just by luck, drove past it late at night searching for somewhere to stay last minute, they told us check in normally closes at 9 but we could have a room, the staff went out of their way to help us out even though we turned up after hours, they even gave us free food and drinks, breakfast was great the rooms are lovely and clean. Couldn't have asked to have stumbled upon a better place!

Low-slung old pub on the edge of Petworth. Has clearly had a bit of an unfocussed refurb but it still feels more like a locals haunt than a destination eatery.

Lovley pub/inn , we were just passing and decided to stop off for lunch, it was a pleasant surprise lovely ambience , friendly staff and the food was amazing ! I would highly recommend The Stonemasons Inn .

We stopped here for a drink on our way back from the coast last night, as we entered the pub were told it was closing - it was 830pm! No wonder so many pubs are going out of business if you don't open, we won't go there again! Funny how the manager has only replied on here to the people who have given good reviews not the unhappy customers, says it all !

We stayed at the Stonemasons Inn for my sisters wedding and had a family meal at the Inn the night before the wedding. We were a large party but the friendly staff coped well.

We entered this establishment earlier today after noticing a ''breakfast being served''sign outside.

Friendly staff, generous portions a good value for money, has a beautiful outside area and darts as is so child friendly!! Highly recommended if you visit Petworth.

We’d past this place a number of times on our journeys and decided to give it a try, thank goodness we did, what a wonderful surprise.

This used to be my local which has sometimes been hit and miss but today was the worst i have ever seen!

It started with the very warm welcome the barmaid gave us as we came in from our walk. Followed by excellent beef and wild mushroom stew, and fish cakes with poached egg. Good mixture of clientell, and very warm atmosphere

Booked a table at the Stonemasons on Mothering Sunday after a previous great experience. It was packed but the staff were still very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Served by the same pretty young lady who again gave us perfect service, couldn't fault her! Rushed off her feet but still made sure we were happy and always served us with a smile. The Sunday roasts were huge and delicious, the desserts were equally delicious - especially the sticky toffee pudding! Would really recommend the Stonemasons Inn. Will be back again.

Dropped in late afternoon Mothering Sunday to see if we could book a table for 5 for an hour or so's time. The kitchen was due to close in about 30 minutes, but we were offered a table there and then. The Sunday roasts were enormous and absolutely delicious. Would definitely eat here again. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Another 5 night stay at Petworth’s excellent Stonemasons. There is nowhere I would rather spend the night and relax in the morning with a full English breakfast, than at this Inn. Great service, fantastic food, comfortable beds, pleasant and knowledgeable management. What more could one ask for?

We were made very welcome. The menu was basic pub grub with plenty of variety. It was perfectly cooked.

My friends and I had a lovely lunch no complaints whatsoever however whilst we more than happy to give the friendly young lady a generous tip we were surprised to see a 10% service charge added to the bill. I object to this for what after all is a pub lunch.

The air of friendliness in this pub makes it very special. We were there quite late for food, but the food was great, came put piping hot and it was all served with a smile. The duck was brilliantly cooked and the fish and ships was authentic with one of the best mushy peas I think I've ever had.

Popped in mid afternoon after a visit to Petworth House 2 min drive. Traditional English Pub cosy surroundings, friendly staff with great service. one vegetarian meal and one Chicken dish from the specials board. Piping hot, fast service, tasty and lots of it.

Stayed here for our wedding anniversary felt homely and friendly on arrival shown our room which was rustic but to be expected as a historic pub. The food was the highlight an absolute must stopover even if you only eat.I would stay again but maybe request a different room. The let down is front of staff perfectly pleasant just lacking front of house skills - could be dealt with trainingI would seriously consider going back for a curry on a Wednesday the chef appeared Asian origion and the food was alternative and delicious wished I had chosen the Fish curry - curry is not something I would generally choose in a pub as it usually involves a microwave. The breakfast was lovely and the best test to a decent breakfast is the sausage which was good quality and the option of how you wanted your eggs cooked.An enjoyable experience

If you spend the morning in Petworth house National trust you could do far worse than having a lovely lunch in The Stonemasons Inn a really nice pub just across the road from the house a friendly atmosphere good helpful service and good food, only down side for me is they served the fish and chips on wooden plates, the food is good enough with out the gimmicks.

Visited this pub in the middle of August with family, for a Sunday lunch. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, had the roast beef which was very nice, was served by a pretty young lady with light brown hair, would highly recommend this place!!

As we were in Petworth with our dog, we popped in for lunch in the rear garden. The barmaid was very friendly, but for some reason, there was no lime cordial to be found anywhere. Odd for a pub?We ordered food and to be fair, my wife's chicken burger was VERY good. Tasty, nicely cooked and served with good chips.On the other hand, my sausages and mash were very poor. Three sausages looked OK, but were tasteless, the caramelised onion topping was incredibly sweet and the mash was almost certainly reheated from the day before - rubbery and unpleasant.The pub looks tired and the food was very mixed, so only two stars I'm afraid...

Just spent a lovely leisurely Sunday lunch with my Mum, the lamb was delicious, perfectly cooked fresh vegetables, all served with a smile, nothing too much trouble! Charming back garden with plenty of shady spots, thank you!

My husband and I visited the Stonemasons for a Sunday lunch last week. We both went for roast pork which was delicious! The portions were plentiful and the quality of the food was great. We were served by a young lady who was extremely attentive and polite. Although she seemed to be busy she made sure we had everything we needed and ensured we had the best experience possible. Did not catch her name but she looked about 17/18 with light brown hair. The bar staff were also extremely friendly. Thank you to the stonemasons for an extremely pleasurable experience.

We visited on Saturday Lunchtime, it was very quiet with 5 staff behind the bar. I ordered a chicken salad and my partner gammon and chips. My friends food came out straight away and then ours came out about 15 minutes later, after I asked where it was. My salad was incorrect so I asked for it to be changed. My partners came out and it was ham and chips (a different thing on the menu) but he was too hungry to send it back. When I told the bar staff they said sorry and that was it. For a pub to be so quiet and so many staff I'm surprised so many things were wrong. No service recovery, not impressed!

Just popped in for a drink whilst visiting nearby Petworth House and ended up staying for Sunday roast as it looked so nice! We weren't disappointed had a very reasonable priced Roasted Belly of Pork with huge Yorkshire puds, plenty of roast potatoes and vegetables. Staff were friendly and helpful. Pub it's self was clean, well kept and welcoming with beautiful hanging baskets and window boxes outside. Loved the snugg area with the sofa in the window.

Pub was empty when we arrived for lunch. Lovely friendly staff and food arrived quickly. Shared the ploughmans which was fabulous. Only complaint, not enough soda bread for 2! Reasonable prices. It is walking distance from Petworth house so pop out if you want something a bit special

This place needs a total overhaul in terms of its customer service and food delivery.Whilst the actual cuisine wasn't too bad, it took about 45 mins to arrive and the staff were pretty useless.Our son's sausage and mash was ok but the mash was a bit glue-like.Would be great if the staff put their smartphones away and actually did their jobs of waiting on diners.

we dropped in after leaving good wood didn't book and a big group of nine . The bar staff were brilliant welcoming us in and splitting the bill three ways . Cracking food at reasonable prices and all served rapidly and with a bit of banter . Cannot recommend this place enough . Wish it was closer so we could go every week .

Great selection of interesting beers and other drinks. Nice garden for children. Bar snacks were delicious and unusual.

Visited for early dinner, staff very attentive on arrival good customer service throughout. However menu choice was a bit limited, mostly consisted of burgers in different format which is ok if you like or want burgers. Had gammon,egg and chips, plenty of food on the plate but the gammon was dripping in either water or fat and was placed on top of the chips which meant they were all soggy and not at all appetising, the other meal,was sirloin steak cooked medium to well. The steak was tough, not able to cut with knife even though steak knife used. Steak seemed as though it was cooked in a oven certainly not grilled or charcoal grilled as you expect it to be, not at all edible and for just under £20 exceptionally poor and disappointing, so all in all not good experience. You could say why did we not complain, having been on a day trip to Bognor Regis and on our way back to Buckinghamshire, feeling quite exhausted at this point, so guess we have to take some of,the blame but does not inspire us to return. On a good point the washrooms were excellent, nowadays that is quite a rarity in this country so others take note

Stayed here June 17, rooms were spacious and very comfortable. Short walk into the centre of Petworth with the highest number of antique shops per head capita in the U.K. Very pleasant.

Looked good from reviews and has a decent menu but food was fairly pedestrian. A very average steak, onion rings consisting almost entirely of batter and mediocre service wouldn't have me rushing to return.

I've been here on numerous occasions and since this establishment acquired new management have found it to be changing, nicely.I've eaten here and the menu is very good, the staff very helpful and polite, and the venue is ideal, with lots of seating areas....It is in easy reach, walking distance 10 minutes north of Petworth town centre and well worth a visit....food is served ALL day unlike some venues who close after lunch and reopen for dinner....Try it!....

Me and my daughter came in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch, the manager of the pub was very welcoming, my daughter and I both chose the sausages and mash (small portion for my daughter) and it was a delicious meal we both enjoyed it. The mash was cooked to perfection lovely and creamy and the sausages were brilliant. Will definitely be coming back to eat here again.

2 halves of bitter & 2 sandwiches £19.80! no sandwich menu to be seen but a selection was rattled out to us, no prices of course. I had posh fish finger sandwich, & my husband had cheese & tomato. After paying asked if we wanted chips/salad said no, sandwiches arrived with chips & salad! Sandwiches were good but we didn't expect to pay £7.95 for them vastly overpriced especially for cheese & tomato ( cheese was a slice I suspect from a pack ) won't go there again for a light lunch but cannot comment on main meals.
