We visited the pub on Wednesday lunchtime and there were 5 of us. 2 adults and 3 children. We were shown to a table and were relieved to see they weren't overly busy as the children were very hungry. We gave our order to the manager who was working the restaurant and she kindly brought out 3 very small pieces of cheesy garlic bread to keep them going while the kitchen did the table next to us who had ordered before us. Thats where it went wrong.... The tables who came in long after us were getting their food one after the other while we waited and waited. The manager didn't courtesy check us what so ever and no explanation was given. I went to the bar twice to ask what was going on and the girl was extremely embarrassed but was unable to answer my questions. After waiting for over an hour with the children watching other tables getting their food and getting more upset we paid for what we'd had and left. It wasn't a complicated order. 3 kids meals, a curry and a chicken burger. Last time we visited back in October we had an excellent experience but we will never go back and I am currently in contact with the brewery.

The bar staff during our visit were pleasant. No problem there. The issue was with the food. Four of us waited at least 35 minutes before being served the Baked Camembert (2 couples sharing two portions). It was to be served with cranberry sauce and toast. Well, what a disappointment that was! Almost £15 per portion and it was served with processed brown bread, barely toasted. Very limp and completely unappetising. What not served with toasted sourdough or a decent slice of bread at least? But worse was to come. Attempting to eat the cheese, one had to be careful not to bite on RAW WHOLE GARLIC just pressed into the cheese! Two of us crunched into garlic and of course, this just about destroyed our palettes for the rest of this visit. This was just awful - we all agreed this was not a place to return too. No one asked if we were happy with the food of course. Had we not had to pay up front, I am sure none of us would have been happy to pay for this!

Called 5 mins before arriving & booked a table for two late Sunday afternoon as passing through Petworth, a really lovely old pub which is a bit of a tardis given the outside dimensions. Lovely smiley helpful young waitress & equally nice manager/landlady & faultless food. Really pleased with tripped over the Star & can't fault the place.

Superb. Nice choice of beers, good food, and terrific service. We called for a late lunch just before the kitchen shut expecting to be turned away but a very friendly landlady was only too pleased to seat and serve us. The burgers were thick and delicious, the fish and chips huge and the gammon thick and tasty. Definitely worth the visit.

Not our first trip, but experience is getting progressively worse. Really lacking consistency. We went for lunch for my Dad's birthday at the weekend as he lives locally. Last time we ordered Cheesy garlic bread as aside it came as huge chunks of bread, really quite nice. This time it was 2 slices of ordinary bread, basically cheese on toast. It was servied on napkins, meaning we spent a lot of time pulling bits of paper out of the melted cheese. Really not reflective of the price. Another bit that really rubbed us up the wrong way was that we ordererd 2 portions of onion rings for the table. Each portion had 3 rings. We were sat by the kitchen and repeatedly saw portions of onion rings with 6 per plate leaving the kitchen. Why were we paying twice as much for onion rings? If you are low on supplies, or stock, take it off the menu rather than trying to cobble it together with what you have?!

Unfortunately we arrived on a day when there were some delays in the kitchen, we were warned on arrival that there would be a 40 minute delay. When the meals arrived 3 out of 4 were ok, but the bangers and mash went very wrong, no mash available, replaced with poor quality fries, burnt sausages certainly did not make the meal look appetizing. I did not complain on the day as I felt the staff were doing their best under difficult circumstances. Hopefully our next visit will be better.

Visited Petworth yesterday, surprised at how few pubs we found. The Star is a Fuller's pub and was quiet for a Saturday before Christmas. The food was ok, service not as sharp as it should be. On a freezing day for some reason the wood burner was not on. They did light it when we were leaving. There was no Christmas music and it all felt pretty flat. First visit to Petworth, little underwhelmed unless you're into antiques.

I had the worst meal of my entire life yesterday at The Star in Petworth. Lovely pub, and my friend's basic battered fish and chips were great apparently, but all I can say is my plate was the most horrific mess I've ever seen! Wish I'd taken a photo because describing it probably won't get near the look of it. A giant plateful of huge overcooked vegetables surrounding an upside down plaice that was SMOTHERED in a fried onion sauce!! What was the chef thinking? Well actually I couldn't call him a chef because a proper chef could NOT serve up such a dish. It was honestly disgusting. So people, my advice is to stick to pub basics and steer clear of 'Catch of the Day' !!!!!!!

Quite a disappointing meal if I’m honest. After seeing previous reviews, I had high hopes for this place but unfortunately it wasn’t our lucky day. Small things matter and sometimes they can be the most important. For example, being seated but never mentioning that food needs to be ordered at the bar. Obviously it came to light but after waiting a while for a non-waiter service. On ordering the meals and drinks, it seemed like there was a slight lack in training how to make an orange juice & lemonade. 85/15 ratio was a bit much. Once the food was ordered it was nice to see it arrive quite swiftly, unfortunately the calamari tasted very fatty and tasted like it had been cooked in old fat. Chewy but that I do understand isn’t easy to avoid. Once I had finished half the starter and gave the remaining calamari a miss, half the cutlery was then taken away and not replaced for when the main came out. Little things I know but they all add up. Then the main courses came out. First the roast beef, which I must say the yorkshire puds were great but all the roast potatoes were so black they were almost unrecognisable. Soggy and burnt and the roast beef was very grey and chewy. The worse thing was the catch of the day. The fish itself seemed ok but the broth it was in was so unpleasant in smell that it was off putting for both to eat anything. Almost thought the fish was rotten it was that bad but it was the broth that had the most god awful smell. Such a shame to be writing this sort of review but I hope it helps in the long run.

This is my second time visiting the star after the new management took over, my last experience as you may have seen by my previous review was “dreadful”, I was hoping things would have improved and changed for the better, however, it all seems the same, uninspired staff and lousy management, I believe the owners name was MATT who blatantly ignored me and my wife as we announced our disgust at the food and service, it wasn’t until I proclaimed my thoughts about a reduced payment that he finally gave me some attention and even then he was rude and came across as a bully. I have given the star enough chances to show me some sort of passion and dedication for the hospitality business but all seems to be lost on them. Please leave our beloved town of Petworth and please allow some new owners to come in and respect the town for what it is and to bring the star back to its former glory.

We owe The Sar Petworth several reviews so this one is an amalgamation topped off with our visit last night. The Star is our local and, since the current owners, Matt & Lucy took over a year ago has been a regular haunt for both drinks and often food. With a large family there is always something to celebrate, where do we do it? The Star of course! So far we have done a 20th, 40th, 2 x 75th birthday plus a 50th wedding anniversary along with several impromptu meals with The Star catering for EVERY requirement (we can be a fussy lot and 'off-menu' is common - yes we are THAT annoying family). Last night we went for my husbands birthday - a surprise organised by Lucy and facilitated by her lovely team including manager Matt - who always has our drinks on the go the second he spots us and a lovely new waiter (I'd had a drink so really sorry cannot remember your name). It was a wonderful evening and even though they were packed nothing was a bother. Family friendly we often pop in with at least our youngest in the afternoon and clear them out of mozzarella sticks! Enjoyed a light meal here with my 7-year old son on Saturday mid-afternoon. Although it wasn't too full when we arrived around 2pm, it did get much busier later and service suffered somewhat. The food itself was good honest pub grub. I had the minute steak which was perfectly fair: tasty, a reasonable size, chips served in a goblet on the size with a couple of leaves of lettuce.Dessert was somewhat disappointing: I doubt the apple-pie was home-made, it was very bland, had custard mixed in with the overcooked apples, and it was not possible to have it without the caramel topping. We enjoyed our location in the bright conservatory at the back, it was pleasantly separated from the noisy pub at the front.Service was OK, especially from the youngest waitress who was very attentive, but the two girls were clearly rushed off their feet with the crowd.

Always wanted to pop into this little pub for some food and a drink for years. Finally spent a few hours in Petworth (all you need) We had the lunch menu. Lovely food, speed service and the staff were excellent. Will come again in the summer.

Probably the last pub in petworth as all the others tend to look and act like restaurants with bars.Nice atmosphere, good food & you can actually drink in there without feeling that you are just waiting for a table.

A comfortable Fullers pub in the middle of Petworth. The pub is very clean, the bar staff helpful, a good selection of drinks and it is obviously popular with locals. Well worth a return visit.

Lovely pub restaurant. the food was very good. I had their beef and ale pie. My wife had their fish and chips. Both were much better than you would expect from a pub. We sat by the fire and just had a lovely meal with friendly service. An excellent find for the village.

Last time we went we had a young dog who was so noisy, we had to escape to the garden for lunch. Same dish this time, mushrooms and Stilton with pepper corn sauce. Excellent as a light lunch. This is a traditional lunch with charming staff, a broad menu and excellent food. I was very envious I didn’t get to have any of the onion scraps with the local sausages ! Bought some local honey too, looking forward to trying that.
