Searching for a Sunday Roast: found this amazing pub/restaurant. From the moment we walked in, we knew we had found a great place. Lovely warm welcome. Great service, great food and the toilets, yes the toilets, really great sense of humour. Enjoy this excellent country pub and return as often as you can!

Very welcoming pub with lovely cheerful atmosphere . Child and dog friendly . Lovely walks on the doorstep and some outdoor seating . Great Village asset, different but welcoming a lot broader range of clients. Great range of local beers and good wine. The menu is small but very tasty, the west acre trout is sublime . Yes, the decor is quirky but after my first visit to The Stag at West Acre today I found the service to be friendly and efficient and the food to be absolutely delicious. My friend & I each chose one of the pie options from the Sunday menu, comp!ete with veg, roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding, followed by a homemade 'blondie'. One of the tastiest roast dinners I have had for a long time. We will certainly be scheduling a return visit!

We had been here before the refurbishment and were never impressed with the friendliness of the staff and dogs were not made at all welcome and we always had to sit outside in an old poly tunnel . Well what a change! As soon as we entered we were warmly welcomed and there was no problem that we had 3 dogs with us. We all had pies for lunch which were all lovely. There was a good selection of local beers too. We will definitely be coming back

Please make up your own mind, but this was our visit....made a reservation dinner for 2. On arrival, we noted our table was right by the door, yet there were other tables free, so we, of course, asked to be moved. At the bar, we waited a while to be served as the lady serving couldn't work the till. We asked for a pink gin and lemonade.....the lady didn't know about pink gin and showed me a bottle and asked if that was it ???? We sat down, and it was chilly, and I had to keep my coat around my shoulders.....this was due to the wood burner not working. We asked for menus, and unfortunately, they could only find one. The lovely polite young girl came to take our order....this is a very small menu so we expected everything on it to be available. There was a choice of 4 starters ......unfortunately our choice and another option we're unavailable....thats half the starters not available. We were not asked if we had any allergies or food intolerance. We ordered our mains and requested a bottle of white wine. A few minutes later, the lady behind the bar came over with one glass of wine......we said this was not what we said we wanted a bottle of wine. She came back with a bottle, put it on the table, and left. We opened the wine and it was not cold. She came back with a room temperature cooler and said, "Was the wine not cold enough ?? We said no, it wasn't chilled. She apologised and said she had to go to the cellar to get it as she hadn't put any in the fridge earlier...... My burger arrived....no pickle as stated o the menu and heavily seasoned with garlic, which is fine for me, but it should have stated it contained garlic. My partners pie arrived with chips and peas but no gravy......we asked for some gravy, but they didn't do it. This pub has such potential but sadly we won't be going back.

Having read some of the previous comments of bigots who say that they are not going to set foot in the 'poncy' place or that the community has lost a valuable asset then simply ignore them. The vision and commitment the owners have is going to be welcome improvement and asset to the community. The change is welcome and we shall continue to support your venture.

The Stag was, for many years, the heart of the community in West Acre. It also attracted people from elsewhere because it was just so good. Great people, Paul and Serena ,lovely food and always the warmest of welcomes. For whatever reason the freeholders did not renew the lease and sadly the Stag,in its most recent form, is no more. I have heard various rumours of what will replace it but the fact is that none of them are likely to replace what was a wonderful community pub .West Acre has lost its most valuable asset and been done a very considerable disservice .

I have been an infrequent customer of this place for years . Not because it isn't good , it always has been , but only because it was a little out of our way . However with the demise of standards in a certain pub in Castle Acre , and the pretentious aspirations of its closest neighbour in Newton , many of us have transferred our flags to the Stag where standards have always remained consistent .For starters Paul has always kept a superb cellar and you can taste it ! I worked in the brewing trade for 8 years and have seen some shockers but Paul takes pride in his ,His food is good traditional fare , well presented , filling and excellent value . And if you pop in early doors on a Friday you may get a bonus . Sometimes if she has the time in between the end of the Lunch sittings and preparing for the evening covers his Daughter , who is an absolute whizz at cooking up imaginative little snacks often places some on the bar which are always delicious .Lots of places like to think of themselves as country pubs but the Stag is the real deal , you can even bring your horse . No really , they have a hitch pole in the big beer garden to the rear and are happy for riders to visit . The fact that its remained open despite it being a bit out of the way and is so well supported speaks volumes . You will always receive a warm welcome at the Stag and i highly recommend you visit it , especially if you're holidaying in the area just to experience something that is now becoming increasingly rare , a true English country pub in a beautiful location . P.s. Don't be put off visiting if you are on your own , I guarantee someone will strike up a conversation with you , I forgot to mention it's also the friendliest pub in the area .Enjoy

This is a great pub, from the moment you walk through the door to the second you leave you will have a fantastic experience. We are now (fairly) regular visitors often going in for a meal and a couple of beers. We have taken both our sons who live away on a couple of occasions and they love it too (high praise indeed). Firstly you will get a very warm welcome then you will have the difficult decision as to what real ale to enjoy first. The Stagg is a Free house - quite a rarity these days - so the choice of beer changes regularly (not only every couple of weeks when we visit has there been a new choice but also sometimes during the evening). The beer is well kept and very reasonably priced. The food is excellent with a wide but sensible choice and it's also excellent value. My only regret is having lived in Castle Acre for over 20 years we only found this pub a couple of years ago; it's simply brilliant and located in the gorgeous village of West Acre. I was doing a trail and this pub is just five minutes off course. When I went in, it was very quiet but I got excellent service from the staff. I ordered the steak and stilton pie and it was very tasty. Exactly the kind of food you would expect.

great to revisit this pub to find it is better than I remembered. Still has all its character, but with the added extra of great home cooked food at a reasonable price. Choice of ales from local Brewers and aspalls so we were all very happy. Will not leave it so long to return again.

Visited for the £11 for 3 courses Sunday lunch and very pleasantly suprised by the quality and portion sizes which at this price is amazing.Good old style pub with proper beers, and proper pub grub. The roast beef was tender and plentiful and the puddings and crumbles a reminder of what food should taste like.Great service from Serena too!!

Food was good from what we had, but the waiting staff lead a lot to be desired!! Short girl with shoulder length dark curly hair never once smiled, never used a polite word, accused us of stealing her salt and pepper pots and she would be checking before we left!! Would not return as the experience was terrible!! All caused by the very rude member staff never been treated so badly for the money that was spent in my life.

A group of us had the Christmas menu, we chose here because it wasn't your bulk standard menu but the traditional fayre was there if you wanted it. The service was fantastic, the pub is wonderfully decorated for Christmas, the food was amazing and Paul and Serina are welcoming, attentive hosts. Everyone in the group enjoyed their choices, nothing was too much trouble. Would recommend to friends and family without hesitation. Thank you for a really lovely evening.

A large group of us have enjoyed a great three course meal here. We were able to pre-order from excellent choices from their Christmas menu. The beef in particular was extremely good having been slow roasted for six hours. Service was efficient and uncomplicated. We were able to remain in the restaurant without the feeling of being rushed. Very likely to have numerous return visits.

Always searching for new places to eat when our friends visit us from Lincolnshire. We drove 15 miles from our home to Westacre and enjoyed an extremely well priced three course Sunday lunch. The barmaid/ waitress was welcoming and very efficient.Normal menu also looks inviting so another visit is imminent especially as real ale is on tap, that's a welcome bonusThe Stag is a real gem.

We walked from our cottages at the recommendation of the owner. We needed our lunch by the time we arrived, and were not disappointed. lovely meal and well priced. My ham egg and chips was lovely, we also had lasagne, and the biggest omelette i have seen in our group. just what we needed to set us up for the walk back .Only disappointment was we couldnt take the dog into the pub, which was ok as weather stayed dry, if cold and ate outside.

Decided to do a little walk (8 1/2 miles) along the river Nar and stopped for a bite to eat and a couple of pints. Friendly service and excellent local ales at reasonable prices. Sandwiches were good and the chips well worth the wait (the barmaid forgot them).

Unpretentious village pub....you get what you see...which is good food, a good range of beers and a friendly atmosphere in a nice pub in a village setting. My partner had a lamb shank with vegetables while I had a steak and kidney pudding also with vegetables which were both very good. Limited range of puddings but we had plum crumble and syrup sponge. This is not a gastro or themed pub....doesn't pretend to be....but if you want a good beer and good plain food in a nice village setting give it a try. We did and glad we did.

Had a prawn baguette outside in the beer garden with the dogs. Really generous portion of prawns. It had a sign in the garden saying 'Horses welcome'. And there were loads of horses in the garden, all quietly grazing whilst their masters nipped in to get refreshments. Nicely placed on the outskirts of this lovely quaint Norfolk village. Would go there again for pub grub and a pint.

Stayed at Swaffham and wanted a friendly, local pub with good food. We got it in The Stag. Walked in to a warm welcome from the publican and the locals in the bar. Great menu and specials - ordered the Lamb Shank - it was absolutely delicious, fell off the bone - yummy jus! Very reasonably priced. If you want musac, retro furnishings and bland highly priced food - don't go to The Stag - it's a real pub with real food - a fantastic find in this part of Norfolk.

We wanted a lunch stop while travelling the A47 and consulted the Good Beer Guide, our bible for such information. The Stag was convenient, a few miles to the north of our route, so we went. It's a proper village pub and all the better for that, not a hint of pretension. We soon had pints of one of the three cask ales in our hands and our food order was taken; ham, eggs and chips for me and scampi and chips for her. The ham was the good carved variety, nothing wafer thin about it, and the chips big and firm. I'm told the scampi was good but she wasn't expecting it to be locally caught. :-)The bar has the biggest collection of handpump clips I've ever seen, over 100 on a door alone, plus countless pinned to the ceiling. Outside there's an ample car park and a hitching rail for horses. Walkers and cyclists are welcome.Travelling back and aiming to visit nearby Castle Acre, we returned for pints and sandwiches. Again everything was to our liking, plus entertainment from the locals over a large bag of courgettes, fast becoming marrows. Another one to remember for future travels.

The stag is a friendly village pub popular with locals. It has a traditional feel and It has at least 3 different beers on tap which change frequently. There is nothing "Farrah and Ball" about the interior and the food is tasty ,reasonable and unpretentious with seating in the restaurant, bar, or outside.Children are made welcome. The cod and chips, a Friday night special is £7.West Acre trout is usually available. There is a lovely walk ( about 3 miles ) to Castle Acre from the pub along the Nar Valley Way.

I have reviewed the stag twice before and have given it glowing references and so I should perhaps assure readers that my only relationship with the pub is as a frequent visitor to the area and as a customer who appreciates a very good community pub which is run by nice local people who take a pride in what they do .This is not haute cuisine and it would be inappropriate to judge it against such standards.it is good quality English pub food done to a very good standard.so when seven of us went recently we had steak and kidney pudding, belly pork with apple sauce, burgers,a very nice chicken dish etc etc.The people I went with appreciate nice food and,as ever, the stag came up with the goods.I am repeating myself but there are always three real ales on tap and the beer is well kept. This is a great little pub which deserves its 'five' rating on trip advisor.

After reading reviews on tripadvisor I chose this pub for lunch after a visit to local gardens. I did not find a friendly atmosphere as others had stated. The 5 of us chose from the specials board and I, and a friend, chose the lamb shank in red wine sauce. It was horrible! My shank was very small but edible but the sauce was awful. It was gelatinous and did not taste nice. My friends's shank was fatty and she didn't eat it. I could not believe this was anything but 'boil in the bag'. When the food was taken away she told the lady to pass on her thoughts about the meal and told her what she thought about it. All the waitress said was OK! The rest of the meals were good. When we got the bill we realised we hadn't been charged for the shank, so that was positive but there was no mention of it by the waitress. The whole experience was a 'non event' which was a shame as we don't go out often together and I would certainly never return to the Stag.

We stayed at a B&B just round the corner. The Stag was recommended so we thought we would go for a meal there. Very friendly cosy atmosphere. I would feel very comfortable going in by myself. We ate in the bar next to the wood burner and had a lovely meal. I'm not into my beers but they do have guest beers. The landlord was very friendly as were the locals, which is always a good sign! The B&B had maps showing some nice walks in the local area - The Stag would make a lovely lunch stop or end of walk stop. Highly recommended and would visit again if in the area.

Have not long returned from enjoying an excellent Sunday lunch with family at The Berney Arms - we had "discovered" the pub through an article in a magazine, and took a chance based on the article and a view of the website, and I'm very glad we did.The food was excellent, service by all members of the team was attentive but not intrusive, and all for a very reasonable price (about £30 per person for a 3 course meal including drinks).Moules mariniere starters were as you'd expect, particular mention needs to be made of the Vietnamese Belly Pork salad starter which my brother said was very good. The mains we had were amongst the best pub Sunday Roasts I have had, and were huge with plentiful meat and vegetables. The real jewel in the crown though, as recommended by one of the staff, was the Apple Creme Brulee which was just sublime.Definitely recommend and will definitely be returning.
