The Spotted Cow in Hartlepool

A decent village pub that serves a very good selection of food at reasonable prices. We have used the Spotted Cow regularly and have always enjoyed the food. Dogs are welcome in the bar but not the lounge. Food can be served in both the bar and the lounge, same menu in both areas.

Great place to go. Nice bar area for a more relaxed traditional pub feel. With pool table. Dogs allowed in the bar area. You can have a meal or just a few drinks in the bar area. Restaurant area at the other side for a nice meal. Not too bright but it's bright enough that you can see what you are eating- always a bonus. Nice staff. Beautiful food. Cost, I'd say on the mid range. It's a good price for a very nice quality meal. Nice staff. Nice outside covered seating area too.

Warm, friendly staff, dog friendly bar area. Great food and service. The small plates are out of this world and definitely big enough as a full meal. The mince and dumplings with veg will keep me going for the rest of the weekend!!! Great all rounder. Could perhaps do a couple of real ales to go with the lovely food.

Disappointed - Normally decent but unable to a accomodate, a table for 2, the day before Mother's Day. Logged on to website which stated NO reservations were taken. Turned up to be told that unless I had a reservation, they were full. Mentioned to barmaid that it had stated NO reservations on website - bizarrely she informed me that they had NO control over their website. Took my trade to the Raby Arms in Hart Village- which was equally busy, though able to accommodate a table for 2- excellent food. .

Food is lovely and a good choice. Meals are reasonable priced and you get a good portion size, always too much to finish. The place is always clean and tidy. We felt this time the service was not as good as normal as usually staff very attentive and asking if you need anything else quite often( it wasn't overly busy either) This time a couple of us had finished our drinks but nobody came over for quite a bit of time. But would still go again as food is lovely, staff where still friendly and helpful but just missed that extra bit.

Had a lovely lunch on Saturday. I chose the mince and onion dumpling served with vegetables and mash. There's a choice of potatoes and you can have salad instead of vegetables. There was a good selection of desserts. Staff are friendly and welcoming. There were lots of people eating and there was a nice atmosphere. Definitely will return when in the area.

Well well well This is now fast becoming our favourite place to eat...the staff are absolutely nailing the service and the food is now second to none locally... with a normal menu on Sundays this has definitely turned the tide for my liking as Sunday dinner is not something I like to eat... keep up the good work... complimments to the chef

5 of us had lunch here today parmos were huge and very tasty probrably the best I've had. My partner got the black & blue burger thick juicy burger topped with bacon cheese peppercorn sauce and blue stilling he said it was amazing! The home made chips were golden and fluffy staff couldn't do enough we can't wait to return well done spotted cow 5 well fed very satisfied customers

Lovely food, great service. I had the sirloin and my friend had hotshot Parmo which were both absolutely delicious. Portion sizes are extreme! My friend even took her leftovers home. Steak was cooked to perfection exactly how I asked for it to be. Staff couldn’t do enough for us. Fast service lovely people amazing food thank you will definitely be returning

We payed a visit today, vast menu . My wife had the dish & chips, it was huge, I went for the mix grill with pepper corn sauce both meals absolutely beautiful washed down with a nice pint of Cameron bitter. Well done will be back.

My husbands meal he enjoyed but my mince and dumplings wasn't very good , watery gravy and the dumpling soagey uncooked dough lump , mine is better !!!!! Won't be going back

Always so nice in here. Staff are so so lovely as well. Nothing ever too much for them! Had 2 parmos and fajitas between us. Proper good quality pub grub!

Total bill was £47.50. Ordered a pint of pepsi max and hobgoblin, sirloin steak and scampi, chips and festive vegetables, with leek sauce. And cheeseburger and chips. Originally asked for steak to be cooked medium/rare (see photographs), and it was more medium than anything. Both of us didn't particularly enjoy the chips. They were cooked well but just lacked flavour. The cheeseburger was very good, however the website menu and pricing is incorrect as it was more expensive than advertised. Also the food service times are wrong online too. They stop serving food at 8pm not 9pm as stated on Google. The atmosphere was described as quiet phoned to see if I could book a table. However, when we got there it was quite busy, there were lots of children in, in their pyjamas. Maybe it was a special Christmas party for them? The ladies toilets weren't the best. One was out of order and the other had visible damage. There was also a strong smell of sewage in there. Overall, it's a nice pub in a lovely location (Elwick is beautiful). Probably would return especially in the summer as the outside area looked amazing especially out the back.

A very nice pub but beware their portion sizes are huge. They do offer boxes to take leftovers home if you wish. Very tasty pub food freshly cooked.

Absolutely gorgeous meal! Took my nana for a treat a couple of weeks ago and the homemade food was incredible. Staff were amazing and really couldn’t do enough to help. Toilets where immaculate, cleanliness throughout is fab and pub itself is beautiful! We love it here!

Visted Sunday 22 Oct 2023 with family including 2YO grandson and had fantastic time. Everyone enjoyed food. Easy access for high chair they povided and tables are not packed together. I had the mixed grill which was great and doggy bagged half for supper. Will be going back.

A fabulous friendly pub with extremely tasty food in very generous portions served by lovely extremely efficient helpful staff. This is the perfect place for a family lunch with a wide and varied menu and we look forward to returning soon. First class!

First time here. Had to try the mince and dumpling! Absolutely gorgeous. My son and his girlfriend had the parmo and the chicken was so juicy (cos they let me try it 😁) The portions are huge! Def recommend! X

Visited spotted cow for my birthday on Saturday 16 September. As my family reserved a table once we arrived the table was all set and ready for us. The girls and guys working there greeted us straight away and made us feel very welcome. The restaurant was lovely and quiet for a Saturday but that made it even more special as it felt cosy and secluded just for us as a family. The girls came straight away to serve us beverages. Once our food was ordered we all gathered for a lovely family photo which one of the girls took they couldn’t do enough for us 🙏 So helpful and caring even describing the menu and taking time and patience with us whilst being fussy and asking lots of questions. If you’re in elwick and fancy a yummy pub meal definitely go here. They are amazing and we love visiting. Specially for the girls and guys working here they’re just absolutely lovely and it would not be the same without them. Thank you all for making my birthday special your a credit to the pub.

Our first visit and it was great. Don’t order the large parmos unless you are very hungry. The bar and beer garden areas are both “dog friendly”. Nice to see Marston’s Pedigree and Banks Bitter both on tap. Highly recommended. We will return again soon👍

Lovely pub great food and very hard working staff dont know the girls names but both worked really hard as it was busy ,was there on thursday 10th august , so your 2 lovely very friendly staff deserve a pat on the back anc a bonus 😁 because of that i enjoyed my experiance there and would reccomend the public try it out 😚

I visited as part of a group of 8. Seated & served drinks as soon as we arrived by a lovely member of staff who took care of us all night. The food was absolutely delicious and arrived in great time even with a full restaurant. The atmosphere was very warm and cosy and the staff were all really great. Will definitely be recommending and returning!

Lovely village pub and nice food. Only issue I've had on separate occasions is that no gravy is served with the food I ordered. Once was a pie, veg and chips and this time was mince and dumplings, chips and veg. I would have thought gravy would be included as the gravy in the pie wasn't enough for the rest of the meal. Also it took forever for the gravy to arrive to.the point I'd almost finished my meal. Personally I feel that the gravy should be included in certain meals

I had the GUINNESS, steak and mushroom pie . ( NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED) I Wish I had seen one before ordering, I would have settled for the smaller one , but absolutely lovely. My Wife had the chicken, leek and bacon crumble equally as good, she couldn't manage to eat it all. Both of us were very satisfied with what we had.

We went to the spotted cow with friends for a long awaited catch-up. Two of the party had the broccoli and Stilton soup with softwhite baguette. Then three of the group had the leek and chicken in a creamy white wine sauce with chip n veg the other member had Lasania with salad, then to round off sticky toffee sponge with ice cream , wispa cheese cake and cream, two fantastic bottles of pino white wine. Compliments to the chef every thing bang on point. We waddled out very happy customers

Just been after 2 weeks clouse down for refurbishment of kitchen but didn't dissapoint in the least ,1st class meal ,lovely friendly staff can't do any more if they tried ,a little gem of a pub

Took the family to this pub lovely little village after pondering through the vast menu I decided to have light bite steak and ale pie chips and veg.my grandson had the hunters chicken chips and salad the food was piping hot very reasonable priced nice selection of drinks and very helpful staff. We will be returning very soon.

Visited Friday 28th April at around 6:20 ish for a meal and ordered a parmo and when it came out I had one mouthful and found a hair in it, so sent it back and got another parmo to only find another hair of which it was intwined in the cheese. For although they took off the charge for the parmo that I didn’t eat there was no dicount o for the rest of the meal. Would not recommend anyone to come here

Having checked opening times on Tripadvisor and Facebook, and turned up at 14:00 on a Tuesday to find this place closed. I cannot say if the food is any good, but the service certainly was not. Not even a sign on the door apologising, just totally dark and locked up. Needless to say will not be back.

Took the 2 grandchildren to the Spotted Cow for tea, we all got a "light bite" meal. I had the half rack of ribs with chips and salad and the boys got parmos, BIG for a light bite but very enjoyable and fresh.

It was fine , the chips were delicious . If you like you portions large and your not worried about calories then it’s a great place ! We shared a baguette between two of us, ample food !

Another return trip dropped in without booking, x4 Adults and x3 kids. Very helpful waitress moved some tables round to accommodate us. Three large Parmo's and Italian melt for the adults. Kids had the biggest fish fingers I've seen, a Gammon steak that could easily have been an adult portion and a pizza. All with chips. The cheese to bechemal sauce ratio was spot on for the Parmo's. Kids did really well.

I maybe shouldn't recommend the 'spotty' as its getting busier but we eat here most weeks and have yet to have a poor experience with the food or staff thanks again

We came as a group of 11 for a 16th birthday meal. Our table was ready on arrival and there was no issue with us bringing balloons for the table.

We visit here quite regular, lovely atmosphere, family friendly , place to go if your looking for great home-made food 😊 Never disappointed , great portion sizes and very reasonable prices New menu for Sunday lunches can't wait to try it out

visited scores of times for all sorts of occasions - but Sunday lunch is our fav. light bites during week are excellent value - love the steak and mushroom Guinness pie with chips and salad. friendly service, good beer and plenty room. wide ranging menu to choose from and the chips are the best around.

Visited here on Saturday night. Pleased we booked, as I was surprised how many diners were in at 6:00. We skipped starters and went straight for the mains. I chose the mixed grill and I must say it was very tasty and the portion size big. Our party also chose sirloin, chicken Kiev and chicken done in a leek and cream sauce. Everything was cooked just right and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal.

Visited here today around lunchtime, it wasn’t too busy when we arrived. We sat down and looked through the menu which was quite extensive and had most things you could want. I went for the Chicken in a creamy leek sauce with potatoes and veg. After ordering at the bar the food arrived in about 10-15 minutes and was very well presented with the potatoes and veg in a seperate bowl. Portions were generous and everything tasted spot on. Cannot fault. The scampi was also apparently nice and especially the homemade chips. Service was very friendly. Would definitely return.

Came here after wanting to visit for a while. So easy to get to and so glad we booked a table as it was a very busy Friday night. Food was lovely, wish we previously new the portion sizes as we both ordered off the main menu when the lite bites would have been a normal size. We are big eaters but we ordered far too much. Would definitely return as food was lovely and a very relaxed environment.

5 of us went for lunch here in early January. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The choice of beers on offer was rather limited but there may have been more in the bar as we were in the lounge/restaurant. The menu on offer was good with a wide range of choices and the food arrived reasonably quickly which was quite surprising given how popular it was for lunch. The portion sizes were more than generous, all of the adults in our party had the light bite option which was more than enough. All in all a lovely place for a spot(ted) lunch.

We have visited The Spotted Cow quite a few times this year and the meals never dissapoint and the table service is first class. The only thing letting this pub down are the many worn out chairs which desperatel need new padding in the seat. Other than that, top notch pub grub with a lovely cosy atmosphere.

We were heading home to Rochdale from Seaham, we fancied something to eat, so I googled dog friendly pubs in the area & decided to call at the Spotted Cow, so glad we did, the food was excellent, fresh & hot, we were greeted warmly by very nice staff, it was very quiet, but it was a Monday but as we were leaving it was getting busier, we would definitely call when in the area again, it’s such a pretty little village too
