The Sphinx in Belfast

I ordered a large mixed kebab from The Sphinx on Stranmillis Road last Thursday night, the 7th of March 2024. Unfortunately, what followed was a harrowing experience. Around five in the morning, I was abruptly awakened by excruciating stomach pains. The agony persisted throughout the day as I found myself confined to the bathroom, battling bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea. Even now, on Saturday, I'm still not feeling quite right. Regrettably, I strongly suspect that I suffered from food poisoning as a result of consuming the kebab from The Sphinx. This incident marked my return to the establishment after several months, prompted by a previous unpleasant encounter with a soggy meat kebab. On that occasion, I couldn't help but notice the unsettling stares from the kitchen staff, which I suspect may have been related to a generous tip my friends and I left for the counter girls the week prior. It pains me to leave such a negative review, especially considering the potential for a pleasant dining experience at The Sphinx. However, the severity of my illness cannot be overlooked. I sincerely hope that this feedback prompts the necessary improvements in food safety and hygiene standards to prevent similar incidents from befalling other customers in the future. Additionally, I must address the portion size of the large mixed kebab, which was frankly a disappointment considering the price. The serving fell far short of expectations, leaving me feeling unsatisfied and questioning the value for money. While I understand that quality should always take precedence over quantity, in this instance, the meagre portion only added to my dissatisfaction with the overall experience.

The Sphinx was recommended as the place for the best steak kebabs in Belfast. I was very disappointed. The ratio of bread/salad/meat was wrong. Small thin pitta, shredded lettuce and a mountain of dry, tough beef. Some meat was inedible. The sauce helped a bit but it was just ok, nothing special. I wouldn’t go back and it definitely wasn’t value for money.

Used to be the best kebab place in Belfast but has gone downhill so much over the past year. Food terrible, the famous Sphinx sauce no longer the same, and the service is awful. So disappointing after it was great for so long

Best Kebab Takeaway. Not any more bought Irish Kebab and chicken Kebab terrible chips looked as though they were cooked again and again, chips on top of the meat that looked like it had been through a shredder, chips very oily not strained, Glengormley has gone downhill fast, to spend £20 + for something you just throw in the bin is not on, as a regular customer or was I will not be back. Sphinx has sent downhill big time, and the sauce was what made sphinx and give them a name, but the large kebab was testeless and the sauce was all watery and no flavour from it and very blan, the cost off a large kebab is ridiculous over £14 delivered for large kebab on chips rip off not be going back and I’m from stranmillis and everyone I speak to now in the area says the same thing it’s over priced has been kebabs.

Ordered food and it was left of the ground of a communal gateway where over 150 ppl pass daily, most with pet animals that defecate at the gateway. I'm not animal to eat food of the ground!!! Rang to complain and the person on the phone near jumped down my throat and threatened me. Thankfully I told him it was a recorded phonecall. They also operate illegally in terms of operating with out a manager present which he said clearly. Also leaving food on the ground is against health and safety... Especially with an on going pandemic!!! Refused to give me refund also.

Order instructions not followed. Salad brown on one and non existent on other meal. No answer to phone when I rang immediately after delivered and so decided to eat what I could, refused refund, fair enough, won’t be here again. Partner couldn’t even eat more than a few bites due to nasty, fatty chewy kebab meat. Really upset I spent so much here. This was supposed to be a treat in new home. After I rang to complain and ask about the missing milkshake I got told it would be out within 10-15 minutes, it’s been 1hr and 20 minutes since that call. Rang to ask what’s going on and I don’t even want it now, to be told it should be with me. Who wants a milkshake that’s been sitting in a car, thermal bag or not, for an hour? Absolutely disgusting place and won’t ever order again. Almost £30 spent and I feel like I’ve not had a meal at all.

Just ordered from here of just eat , asked for a kebab chip meal with sauce, no sauce and its cold. Will not be ordering again

Nearly £9 for a cold Kebab didnt take it back as it was rush hour in Belfast and was too hungry to go somewhere else. I use to go to this place all the time when i was a Belfast Taxi driver and never once had a bad meal and certainly not at those prices !!! Unfortunately wont be returning , such a shame though.

Food is as good as always and I've been going to this place for 10 years. I have seen the price of their large mixed kebab on chip go from £5.40 (about 6 years ago) to £12.55 (now). Its too expensive and you would get a main meal in a proper restaurant for this amount.

I hate writing bad reviews and don't often but feel compelled to today. Sphinx Stranmillis has been the most amazing kebab place in Belfast since the 80's and I have always loved getting a kebab on bread every so often. I have just tried to eat one tonight and the meat is awful. Half of it I had to remove while eating as it is SO fatty and tough, I am gutted as it always was my go place for a guilty treat. Please Sphinx change your meat supplier or sort it out ,I will be so gutted if I can't get your usually gorgeous tasty kebabs as a treat. Truly awful meat quality!!!

The closest thing to this type of cuisine would be if you found a 4 day old packet of Uncle Ben’s rice with a pile of cat s#*t on top of it!!! Hanging doesn’t if come close 🤮🤮🤮

Never felt the need to leave a review on a takeaway but sweet baby Jesus. One kebab, one burrito and one rice bowl. All three gone in the bin. Burrito was just plain boiled rice with burnt grilled chicken and salad cream. No salsa, sour cream, guacamole, beans. And for the prices we paid we were expecting above average. To be honest, it wasn’t even passable. Really really awful.

Sphinx botanic avenue Saturday 9th October Large kebab on bread £11.55. What a frcking rip off. The sphinx chain have raised their prices to a stupid level. No reason for this. I ordered for collection. The bread was stick to the paper it was wrapped in. Kebab was so dry and bland it was terrible. After stumbling through the holylands, trekking through the Amazon and climbing over the Great Wall of Belfast we stumbled across a little shop named Sphinx. The outside was rather unassuming but after enthusiastic reviews from fellow family members, whom of which no longer have my respect, we decided to give it ago; little did we know we were in for one of the worst gastronomical experiences of our lives. Upon receiving the kebab, we were offered a Sphinx sauce. The cashier humiliated and belittled my colleague for having no prior knowledge of this ‘specialty’. Upon unwrapping the bag, we witnessed a true crime against humanity. The meat looked like blended pigeons that were kidnapped from stranmillis, the chips looked like potatoes that had been deep fried in hair grease. This kebab was sacrilege against the ways of the Middle East. In the aftermath of this absolutely diabolical meal we return to our accommodation quite looking forward to this meal thinking it was or perhaps even better than a friar tucks supreme but…no quite the opposite infect. I open up my £10 kebab and it was an absolute bombsite. The following morning it had only dawned upon me how brutal and horrific the “kebab” was. So I took it upon myself to do a bit of research and was quite shocked and appalled that the guardian of all papers raved this place. In conclusion the food we were served cannot be described other than a crime against humanity in which it should be shut down for. All the drink in the whole universe couldn’t rectify this. I was in this evening about 10.20 and ordered a cod supper meal. The fish wasn’t to bad but the chips were awful as if it was near closing time and I got what was left. Couldn’t eat them they were all small hard bits that would have the mouth of you. Certainly won’t be back waste of money.

Llegué a comer (que era demasiado caro para lo que me dieron) el personal me trató mal. Después de tomar 5 minutos para ordenar, me paré a un lado y esperé. Siempre me gusta mirar la parte de atrás de la comida rápida, ya que a veces es mucho más burda de lo que crees. Mientras examinaba la parte trasera de la cocina, vi a un empleado dejar caer un trozo de carne al suelo para luego recogerlo y ponerlo de nuevo con el resto. Me sentí enferma, seguro que digo que nunca volví y le aconsejo a nadie que se mantenga CLARO.

Wish I could give this place no stars. I ordered a takeaway from Sphinx and got home to eat my food.Found 2 hairs wrapped around my chips. I couldnt have been more repulsed and obviously couldnt eat anymore. At a time when Covid 19 is rife and can be spread my hair, I was disgusted that staff are not taking food hygiene seriously. And just in case, they think it was my hair I am blonde not dark so couldnt be mine. The fact there were 2 hairs gave me the feeling that my food could have been even on the ground. See pictures attached and you decide if you want to eat in this place. Bare in mind these hairs would be hidden in a kebab... lucky I only had beans and chips so they stood out.Contacted their management and they couldnt have cared less to contact me back. So am out the money for my dinner that I couldnt eat and it had hair in it.Boke...stay away...spend your money elsewhere in a place that values hygiene and their customers safety.

Ordered on line. Asked for chips and a separate sauce. What arrives? Manky old stale chips made hours before the online order was placed, black insects, with what looks like a deep fat fried slug drowned in sauce. If you had people that could even follow an online order would be helpful apart from anything else. Covid19 should make this process easier not worse.

I just got a chicken curry and chips five tiny pieces of chicken with chips bit of curry sauce nothing else with it, no onions peppers etc, inc delivery £10.35 total rip off!! Stay away from them during this time, waste of money!!

The kebabs taste good enough but the manager’s hygiene was appalling. He handled money and then the phone, which he tossed onto unused pitas, before cutting and filling our pitas with his bare hands. He was also very rude to his assistant Jamal whilst we were there.

Does a great crsipy fish supper, and of course the Kebab on chips is quite famous for its house sauce if kebab is your thing this is a must!

The chips here are great but portions are small and you can queue for quite some time when it’s busy.

Swung past last night on way home and we each had SPHINX Dinner Kebab in bread! Magnificent as always! I've been calling here monthly for 37 years and their kebabs have always been the best!

We get out of the Sphinx every other Thursday when on evening shift from the glengormley shop, past few weeks something has been mixed up which is ok, but Thursday past the whole order which totalled £108 was wrong from wrong sauce right down to getting a mixed kebab wrong, sadly I think this will be the last time we order from here as we only get a limited time for a break and having to run up and down to fast food restaurants eats into that time pardon the bun

Delivery was crazy late and slow, food arrived cold. Worst part was the guy on the phone who I called twice because it took more than 1 hour and a half to deliver had the cheek to be rude.

This place is totally overpriced to start. I've been a loyal customer here for years, first stranmillis then glengormley. But recently got a takeaway, two large kebabs and chip, only to go home and find the kebabs were thin and totally measly, wouldn't have filled a baby, chips also soggy. My wife phoned to complain, maybe get it changed to a 'large' kebab. But the service we received was unbelievably poor. The manager told her "there is nothing wrong with my kebabs, I have been making kebabs all day". I then brought the food back to get refund, girl on counter who TBF is always nice, just gave me my money, manager and whole team there, not one apology from any of them. Customer service course required!!

Have been going to the Sphinx for over thirty five years and have to now write this review with a heavy heart. The last few times it just hasn’t been up to it, completely lost the taste it has always had and quality of ingredients has gone south in a big way. The Sphinx sauce, which made it famous has lost its zing, tastes like a thinned down version of what was there before with a lot less taste. Meat which was always fresh from the grill, with great tomatoes and fresh onion is now dished from an overflow tub, tasted dry and burnt and onions were soggy and stringy. Back in the day I would have been in this place far too often and got my kids hooked as well. Unfortunately I don’t think I will be back. It’s been a long journey but I fear there is no return.................

Who ever was the person that served me tonight was unbelievably rude to a point where it was as if he wanted a fight. I asked him for a burger but you would have thought i had done a poo under his christmas tree by his reaction. Luckily I did not rise to his rudeness. This man should not be serving the public as its only a matter of time before someone pulls him over the counter and gives him the slap he deserves.

Ordered two kebabs on chips Saturday evening arrived cold couldn’t eat them, contacted sphinx but got no satisfaction, would not recommend.

Cant speak for the kebabs as im not a fan in general. But i came here to share about how nice the chips are! Would highly recommend a curry chip or cheese gravy chip.

As a kebab tasting expert, I can safely say I've never had a more delicious meal than that provided by The Sphinx on Stranmillis Rd. I've been going routinely for nearly 30 years and the kebab never disappoints. The House sauce is delicious and if you fancy something else, it also serves most of the standard chippy takeaway options... but why would you order anything other than the kebab - try it , you'll not be disappointed. My mouth's watering just writing this review.

Ordered through just eat, after several hours I contacted just eat staff via the live chat. They tried to ring on my behalf to find out the status of my order as it had already been "out for delivery" for 3-4 hours. They hung up and stopped answered the phone after that. Not sure how this place is even in business, 100% avoid.

Fui a la esfinge en Glengormley justo antes de Navidad. Pedí un kebab mezclado con la salsa de esfinge caliente. Mi esposo pidió pescado y papas fritas, mi hija pidió giro rap con pollo. Tengo que decir que probé la cena de todos. . . . . . wow absolutamente increíble. . . . las papas fritas eran las papas fritas adecuadas, el pescado estaba fresco con una mezcla ligera y crujiente. . El giro de mi hija fue encantador, ya que tienes un poco de todo. . . . . mi kebab era simplemente delicioso. te recomiendo que visites la esfinge

Fui a la sucursal de Glengormley ayer para cenar. Mis dos hijas querían el pollo de Houston y la salsa de curry mientras yo iba por el icónico pollo kebab.

Ordered a 2 kebab on there app asked on the notes #that last time The kebab was dry please extra sauce, both came to the house both dry as a bone, rang Sphinx and the wee girl did not have a clue, the kebab had soggy lettuce on top as was freezing as well, it’s put me off Sphinx now they charge a lot for kebab and the standard and quantity is poor.

You will not be disappointed with ordering the large kabob on chips with extra sauce! By far the best kabob, in my opinion, anywhere! Really friendly staff and quick service for your fresh food.

Popped in for a quick bite enroute home from a concert as We were all starving. My son ordered kids kebab on bread and I ordered small kebab on chips, my partner ordered a burger, no chips. I ordered kebab sauce with mine, my son ordered garlic. We ordered 2 cans of coke and a bottle of water. The total came to £17.80.

Placed an order via Deliveroo that's status stated received and 'delivered' but the food hadn't been delivered. I contacted Deliveroo directly 3 times before the food arrived 2 hours after the order was placed. The food was awful, terrible quality, worst service ever and i wouldn't go near the place again. Also, students beware!! I ordered quite late so i think they were genuinely hoping I would 'forget' I had ordered or fall asleep or whatever... why else would they declare the food had been 'delivered' when it hadn't even been cooked?!!! AVOID AVOID AVOID...

They have a vegan kebab option and I found it very bad. Is chips or rice with cooked lettuce and a few more green things,I only finished because I was starving and I hate to throw food. Repetitive flavor, and not a good flavor. The onion rings are very oily.

Ordered for delivery. Initially told 50 mins for delivery. Waited 1hr and 50 mins total for delivery, food cold to lukewarm with chewy meat, squashed in the bag. Threw immediately in the bin and went and got a pizza instead. Waste of money, will never get from again.

Ate from this takeaway many times in the past.Staff were friendly.efficient service. Great chips with salt and vinegar!

Sad to say but the Sphinx is dead. After 25 years of great food I give up. Called last night ordered a Kebab, a Spinks burger, and a bottle of water. Waited 30 minutes with very few people in the shop and watched the staff fend off phone calls about non-deliveries and cold food etc. When my order was called I was handed a single Kebab that had been sitting on the rack for 15 minutes. I said my order was incomplete to which the server handed me a bottle of water and shrugged her shoulders and said I would have to wait again for the burger to be prepared from scratch. I didn’t and left. When I got into my car and opened the Kebab it was stone cold from sitting and horrible. Best kebab shop in Belfast is now the worst and I won’t be back.

Where can I start to write what has gone wrong with this place ( Stranmillis branch), for years when I was young this was the only fast food place for me and my friends to go to. When it closed down as renovations began it felt forever, and when it opened back up I remember people had the placed queued out of the shop down the street and around the corner.

El pan de kebab parece que está hecho en casa. . . Espero que lo sea. I can only speak about the kebab on chip. I would usually go intermittently for a great kebab here and trust me it was great, unfortunately the last visit killed it for me, the chips were over cooked, there was hardly any sauce and very little meat, won’t be back.

Always Great Food, very clean, tastes amazing, we travel over an hour for this meal, very worth it every time

We ordered online to collect the lunchtime specials. Filled in the online app asked the usual questions like what drink salt and vinegar and the other things so we asked for a burger meal and sausage meal both with salt and vinegar collected it and returned to work. Opened it up the lid on the beans with the sausage special had not been put on properly and it was all over the place so continued on opened the sausage special to find this burnt scrivelled sausage (picture provided) and chips which I could only describe as end cuts of potatoes not a proper chip among them only scrag ends hard as a rock. Could not eat them so if you going to order the lunchtime special check them before you leave the shop. Btw this was the Botanic Avenue shop

Really disappointed when it finally came there was part of the order missing so they took the order back and brought back the right order an hour later I ordered a steakette and mixed kebab the chips where hard The kebab meat was burnt and there was hardly any sauce on it the steakette was overcooked for the price of it I expected A lot more has really went to the dogs

Got a takeaway for my family kebabs and kids meals the kebabs was terrible no taste big lumps of meat not able to chew it. Chips were over cooked as if the been lien and just heated up used to love this place but it has went to the dogs recently a lot of friends said I told you so I will never eat out of botanic again it’s used to be lovely wen it opened now it’s disgusting
