Title: Disappointing Experience with Rude Staff I recently visited this pub and was appaled by the unprofessional behaviour of the staff. After walking in to no one behind the bar, i managed to find a member of staff hiding in the kitchen. After asking if i could order a drink (which is pretty standard practice walking into a pub) he told me to “lose my attitude” and followed it up with a condescending “give me a second, love.” Such dismissive language is completely unacceptable in any service environment. It made me feel disrespected and unwelcome. I won’t be returning, and I can’t recommend this place to anyone who values decent service.

We have found our new favourite pub in clifton, food is amazing if you are gluten-free. I can say the food is fantastic, everyone so lovely the staff are wonderful. Definitely will be visiting agian .

Popped into this pub today on the off chance to have a drink, lovely atmosphere had family visiting from Essex and we are from Bath, had a lovely long chat with the Landlord, who was extremely friendly and helpful. Didn't sample the food but we will return.

Had a roast here today. Everything tasted great! Was even better to have everything on the same plate and not as an accompaniment to share with others. Beef was cooked well, roast potatoes were great and the atmosphere of the bar was good and the staff were great. Would definitely go here again!

Not a typical English pub atmosphere but comfy and great food. Great location if you're heading to Clifton.

I was shocked. I popped into this pub last Thursday early evening and ordered a medium glass of house white wine. When I politely asked if the amount I was being asked to pay on the card machine of £9.10 was correct for house wine and then when I wanted to run a tab so I could order a drink for my friend who hadn't yet arrived but was told that I couldn't, another member of the bar staff withdrew my drink and told me that she would not serve me. I am not sure what the reason for this reaction to my polite questioning was but I doubt that I will be returning anytime soon.

Bit spenny even for Clifton, prompt service, good range of drinks. Was very busy but just managed to nab the last table in the place. Didn't rate food as I haven't eaten here.

We walked in on a Sunday afternoon (18th of February ) not expecting a table as it was packed and buzzing. Luckily the very attentive staff managed to find the 3 of us a seat by the window. We ordered our food, me being a bit fuzzy as I do not like sparkling water and questioned a bottle of what we thought was gin but it was the bottle containing the water. The staff remained friendly and patient. The food had really good sizes and well worth waiting for. We will definitely come back again and a big cheer to our waitress who came checking to see if everything was ok.

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon post walk, with no reservation. Opted for the roast dinner baguette, with gravy for dipping. Honestly was AMAZING. The beef was cooked pink, and super tender. Fries were great and really crispy. Got offered roast potatoes instead of the fries and had that with one meal, again these were really well cooked, crispy outside and fluffy inside. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

Just dreadful. First visit in a couple of years .. 8 of us decided to go in for drinks on a Friday night …firstly the bar staff were the most miserable pair of people … no hello, no welcome and certainly no smile or thanks for custom. Every (simple) request was felt like it was a huge effort. Also, they both looked an absolute mess and not dressed for work in what was once a decent place to have a few drinks. Stair carpet was filthy and had not been vacuumed and the toilets (male) were disgusting. Totally unacceptable in my opinion .. all the basics totally sub standard.. throughly disappointed and will not return.

Booked a family lunch. Had this on my try list thanks to gluten free Facebook group. Roasts did not disappoint but desserts could have been more varied as I craved a warm gluten free pud. Pavlova was nice though. Unfortunately venue was very cold so tainted the experience. I may venture back in the summer. Its also not disability friendly so be warned as toilets were upstairs.

Had an absolutely wonderful evening here, we dropped in on the off chance of getting a table for 5, as we had just arrived for the weekend and hadn't booked anything and were taken care of, it was a Thursday in November, which would help I suppose...🤔😁 Anyway, the small plates were amazing, cold beef, "burnt" goats cheese and BBQ chicken strips, followed by seafood tagliatelle for me, washed down with a good beer and nice wine, awesome. Great food, superb service, and a lovely time. Thanks for your fantastic hospitality.

Trendy, friendly tavern in Princess Victoria Street, Clifton, Bristol. Usually pretty crowded, especially from Thursday evening onwards, with noisy good natured people. There is an open dining area at the rear of the bar area, and a restaurant on the first floor serving, steaks, fish and so on. Many move on to dine in one of the many restaurants within easy walking distance. Smart casual wear is the norm. An ideal starting point for your evening out. Open throughout the day. Food and restaurant service not tried. The bar service is excellent

The burgers where raw on the inside served without sauce by a bad attitude waitress

Absolutely freezing , everyone was wearing coats! The bartenders were blunt and rude. I definitely wouldn’t recommend. I didn’t eat here so I can’t comment on the food!

After trying a few places for a walk-in roast at 3pm on a Sunday we were losing hope BUT we stumbled across Somerset house and wow we were so glad we did. The best roast I’ve had in a long time. Chicken and pork were both great, loads of veg, piping hot, cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire pud. All really nicely cooked and all of the staff were so friendly. Only complaint was it was very cold in there on a cold day!

We went for Sunday lunch. That was absolutely fantastic. Amazing tasty food and lots of it.

The BEST veggie roast dinner. Potatoes slapped 🤙 and portions are great value. Coconut mojitos very delicious and coconutty 🌴 Hardworking and really friendly supervisor!

This place is larger than it looks from the pictures online. It has indoor and outdoor seating. We had 2 great meals. The gluten free burger was safe for a celiac to eat. Waitstaff was very knowledgeable and careful to make it safe. The burger was very good and it was huge. It came with huge portion of GF fries which were also great. Our non gluten free eater had the Herb Crusted Market Fish, which was good. We would definitely go back to this restaurant.

So, here we are , a quick 1 night break in super Bristol....which we love! Having "retail therapied " and strolled along the banks of the river we have climbed up the steep hill to our favourite spot.....Clifton. And lo and behold we have stumbled upon the Somerset House....our first visit. Perfect evening and with seating outside we chilled out and had some Desperado's !! Such a shame they had no decent real ale beers....just Proper Job and Gem. Nice music, lovely staff and they do food but we did not partake. It's so good that pub's are allowed to encroach on the road and make it very civilised and friendly indeed !!

Possibly the best Sunday roast in Clifton? An excellent portion with ample gravy. Commended the staff at the time and would highly recommend.

Absolutely stinks of toilets everywhere in the bar.. highly disappointed as always a great venue.. couldnt even finish drinks as its that grim on Easter Bank Holiday weekend

This is well situated pub with great food and friendly helpful staff. a varied range of food from burgers to plates of delicious fresh cooked food. Local suppliers provide great ingredients. had the fish linguini with smoked salmon and delicious king prawns. I had a glass of Guinness and finished with fruit crumble and coffee highly recommended and will be using this one again and again

We enjoyed another fabulous Sunday lunch here today Highly recommended. Brought foodie friends along this time & they loved it too. Both the beef and pork were out of this world. Great selection of tasty vegetables and really good home made Yorkshire puddings & roast potatoes. Delicious proper gravy served in individual jugs Nice touch 2 of our meals arrived piping hot and the other two were luke warm, which was a shame. Really authenticity , genuine staff Good ambiance. We had a friendly, helpful waitress who obviously loved her job and made recommendations regarding our drinks. Great selection of gins and beers I had the marmalade one and my friend the blackberry - both delicious. Sticky toffee puddings went down a treat and the Chocolate Eaton Mess was nice, but would have benefitted from some chocolate or strawberry sauce. The only thing to let the meal down was the blackberry and apple crumble The fruit was beautifully cooked but there was no crumble - just a sprinkling of porridge oats and the custard was watery and so sweet it was inedible. We were offered another jug but told it was exactly the same, so refused it. Why? Put this right please chef. It’s lost this review a star.

Shockingly poor service. We were a party of nine out to celebrate a friends birthday. Our restaurant cancelled at the last minute due to no gas in the kitchen so we ended up at somerset house! They refused to serve us. Said we were too large a party. We asked if we could order by tables of 3, they said no. All the while churning out food for others. We asked if we could bring in food from a takeaway. They said no. Still refusing to even send out chips to us. We were a mixed race group, was it racial discrimination? They could have easily made £ 100 plus off our tables and nothing we asked would they do. We finally got in at our original destination at 9 pm. Worse service ever!

We ate here for the first time tonight (after dropping in on New Year's Eve for drinks before heading elsewhere) and it was a wonderful surprise because we thought it was a pub for drinks only: the food was so, so good: perfectly cooked, seasoned and presented, and it tasted wonderful. If you're looking for great food cooked by chefs who care about their food, good choice of wine by the glass, cool ambient-jazz/funk music over the sound system, a relaxed and convivial atmosphere that really gets going on a Saturday night, then this is your place!

this place from the outside doesn't look much but please don't walk by, the food is amazing and the staff are so welcoming. They accommodated for me without question as I've had an operation so can't eat much so we're happy to give me a child's portion which I assure you wasn't that small. The chocolate tart is homemade and so rich and beautiful. Good value for money too. for a kids meal and full meal plus 2 beers and an apple juice and desert it was £44.70. luxurious interior warm and comfortable.

Awful tasting nasty overpriced food and expensive. We ordered a small sharing platter of breaded whitebait with aioli, salt and pepper squid, Thai fishcakes and fries with fallafal.The Thai fiscakes were rubbery and looked like little flat discs which can only have come from a freezer bag with no coating or taste.There was 3 small squid and the only food that was decent was the whitebait. The place inside needs a good deep clean, avoid.

Probably met one of the rudest barwoman in this place ever llast night . I tasted my pint and it tasted as if it was the first one out the barrel my mate tasted it and agreed .your barmaid didn't! Saying we clean pipes Dailly blah blah I offered her to have a sip where she proceeded to stir a straw round in my drink barely taste it then said I can change your pint for something else but you'll still have to pay for that one . She's in the wrong job won't be coming here again

We love Somerset House. The best Sunday roast in Clifton, hands down. Ely always takes care of us with a smile and good humour, even when we bring our own horseradish (which she then keeps for us!). Or accommodation us on a single table when we needed to add 4 people to our table of 6. Reading this, I’m surprised they’re so nice to us!

I won a pride themed gin tasting for myself and my friend through Somerset’s instagram, and it was such a fantastic experience! Our server Eli was knowledgeable and friendly, and took time to give information about each gin. We even got a freebie bottle of rum at the end! Great pub, lovely staff.

Nice enough old place. Beginning to wear around the edges and the toilets are all on the first floor... not good if you have an arthritic hip. Staff friendly.

The location is nice. But the chips part of the kids' menu were way too salty and the beef smelt quite strange though the chef told us it was fine and safe. That's not the smell that allows you to enjoy the food

I really like this restaurant, the food is good and very well presented, not to mention tasty with a good price point. It is a small restaurant so I would recommend booking - well worth a visit..

PROS: Beef roasts were delicious, even brought out an extra jug of gravy without asking. Beautiful decor and had no problem getting in on a Sunday. CONS: Waitresses seemed very young which isn't a problem except they were quite inexperienced and not very warm and welcoming, manager was lovely though. Waitress managed to skip one of our roasts off the order (the order was 3 x beef roasts...not that complicated) which we were only told after waiting 15 minutes for my friend's roast to arrive, after being told 'the food will be coming soon'. When the waitress finally brought it over she just awkwardly said 'hope the roast makes up for it'. Luckily the manager took it off the bill! My friend managed to get something in her contact lens and was in a lot of pain and when asking where the toilets were the waitresses were very unhelpful, simply waving and saying very disgustedly 'upstairs?'. Finally, music was the weirdest mix of songs. Never did I think I'd eat a roast accompanied by One Direction but here we are. All in all, food was delicious but the service let it down.

One of thd best gluten free Sunday lunchs I've had, couldn't fault it.

It maybe a good place for a glass of G&T with your mates but not a place for a meal out with your date. Atmosphere: Very noisy and packed with people standing around the bar. We got a table at the only quiet corner, but it was still very very noisy. Drinks: I had a double G&T recommended by the waitress which was lovely, although it was over £9. However the draft beer was warm and flat. Food: We ordered beef burgers and the patties were SO dry, as if they re-heated already-cooked beef patties. There was no juice. Their triple cooked chips are not light and crispy, they are more like "left in the deep frier far too long" kind of crispy. Both chips and onion rings were very greasy. Generally the food had overcooked/re-heated left-over vibes rather than freshly cooked, and over-priced for the quality. From what I heard from the waitress, it was not a mistake but their quality standard of food. We paid over £30 for two burgers with a side each. Customer service: Nice friendly staff but when confronted with an issue, not very well handled. After we raised the issue with the food we asked for glasses of tab water, and one of the glasses had something yucky on the rim - not sure what it was but it certainly looked very unhygienic. When we asked one of the staff for the bill we told her about the food issue and the gunk on the glass, she disappeared without apologising or taking the glass away. Another waitress came later on and she apologised for the water but she smeared the gunk on the glass with her fingers in front of us. Not quite what I want to see at the end of the meal at a restaurant!

We visited Somerset house hopeful for a roast dinner. We called to reserve a table on the same day to our surprise they had plenty available(red flag). There menu was very disappointing, only beef and chicken roasts. We ended up not ordering the roast as it looked very disappointing when it came out for other customers. We ordered the burgers and they were very over priced for the quality. UnSatisfied and will not be going back there for food.

Great experience! Had two people in our party with food intolerance and they were catered for really well. The chef spoke to them personally about options. The atmosphere was friendly and covid protocols were in place. Food was lovely and well presented. Would go again and recommend to others.

Very disappointed with the Sunday roast, chewy brisket, out of the tin vegetables and tasteless gravy. Used to eat here in 2018/19 and it was brilliant. Hopefully things improve.

We jumped in here for a quick beer to avoid the storms and I was so glad we did. It's a real gem of a pub with lots of character and history.My Gem beer was super tasty. My only regret was not eating - the food coming out looked amazing but we had already eaten.
