Had a lovely lunch here with my husband. We both had the fish and chips which was lovely, however mine part way through had a very chewy gristly lump in the fish. I brought it to the attention of the nice lady behind the bar and straight away she took it back and brought a whole other plate out. That's proper customer service! We will return. Thank you Six Bells and apologies for not getting your name

Went for lunch today for the first time and the staff, food and drinks were amazing! We had such a lovely time until my elderly father (90 years old) became ill and was dizzy and sick. The staff went above and beyond to help him and us, and I can’t thank them enough. Thank you so much for your kindness and support. PS – it has nothing to do with the food that was served – it has happened to him before, and unfortunately happened to have had an episode today. Thank you again.

What an excellent roast dinner we had in there on a very busy Mother’s Day. The staff are very attentive and friendly and the food was amazing. The mars bar cheesecake is to die for. But family also had the sticky toffee pudding. And the chocolate brownie. All very highly recommended

Stumbled upon this old pub whilst in st Albans last sunday. Popped in for a pint to get out of the rain. The food looked decent. So i ask if there was a table. They showed me to a spare couple of seats and I ordered a sunday roast it was lovely 3 meats. Veg. Roasties. Yorkshire pudding and lovely. Gravey. The service was quick and the food lovely and hot. Had a couple of pints. The pub was busy with a friendly buzz. Very dog friendly too, there were at least 2 under the tables.. Lots of puddings. Homemade if required. I shall return. St Albans is a really nice place to visit aswell.

Did not realise there was a service charge on top of the bill, if we had known and whether or not this was an option then may off gone else where. Food was good but small portions, kids meals charged as an adults even though it was small. No steak, Ploughman's could off been better. No wonder why the pub was quite.

Nine of us came here for an early Christmas dinner and it was fantastic. The food - particularly the turkey dinner- was great, freshly cooked, very tasty with all the trimmings and really good value for money. The drinks were excellent, especially the wine list and the festive ales. Most of all; the service was lovely. They were really busy but everything came out in good time, nothing was too much trouble and we weren’t rushed out. Strongly recommend!

It feels like there might be a pub on nearly every corner in St Albans, but The Six Bells stands out for having a surprisingly great kitchen. Even humble sandwiches are done well, but it’s a sizeable menu with a chalkboard full of specials like pies, fishermen baskets, burgers and salads. There is also bar-bites and Thursday is curry night. Sometimes food is not really given priority in pubs, but The Six Bells has a friendly atmosphere and good meals.

As regular visitors we love the warm and welcoming service here and the great home cooked food but last night, to our dismay, we ordered our go-to favourite pie and it had changed! What a disappointment. From a generous slice with a perfect balance of pastry and filling to a stodgy individual smaller pie overloaded with pastry and little filling. Bring back the old pie please. As always though an excellent service from the staff and a great atmosphere.

Poor, extremely slow experience. Came for lunch and took 20 minutes before someone came to take our orders. Took just over an hour to receive our starters, followed by a further 45 minutes for mains. Staff chaotic, non organised and rushing around. We had to ask a few times when our food was coming! Nobody came by to check if our food was ok. Food was average, smaller portions for the price. Shocked to find 12.5% service charge on the bill for the huge lack of service during our stay. Won’t be returning.

If you go for the beer, really good real ales, this is an excellent pub. Avoid the food though. We waited 1hr 20mins for two sandwiches on a Saturday lunchtime. The fish goujons sandwich was OK but £15 and the sausage sandwich was very ordinary, it didn't come in ciabatta as advertised but in a small panini, for £11. The pub even charged 12.75% service charge - for a wait of 1hr 20 minutes! To be fair, we were told there would be a slight delay for the food but the order only came after we asked about it. The pub is pretty inside and has a nice beer terrace outside.

With it's competitor down the road now having closed door's, Six Bells is the only pub in St Michaels Village. Staff here are warm and friendly, however and not having a go, merly just stating that I did not know until paying up, there is a steep service charge on top. Worked out that it costs £30-40+ per person here, yet at another venue whom do similar foods but at much bigger portion sizes the price is £10.00 per person. Found the pricing on the menus very confusing 😐 no £ symbols just a small figure. Could be why this pub was virtually empty with. I really want to support businesses including locally as understandably it is a real difficult time for pubs especially with cost of living having gone up, however with over priced foods that was small portions found this off putting. Items on the menu no longer available. Would I go here again but only if no service charge and no high costs.

I recently visited this local pub and I have been wanting to sit down and share my experience. We were greeted by a friendly atmosphere and welcoming staff. The moment I walked in, I felt like I was among friends. The decor was charming and inviting, with a warm and cozy atmosphere that made me feel right at home. The menu was diverse and offered something for everyone, from classic pub fare to more unique and creative dishes. The food was delicious, and I appreciated that the ingredients were fresh and of high quality. The bar was well-stocked with a great selection of beers, wines, and spirits, and the bartenders were knowledgeable and happy to make recommendations. The drinks were expertly crafted and served with a smile. What truly made this pub stand out, however, was the staff. They were friendly, engaging, and went out of their way to make sure everyone was having a good time. They created a fun and lively atmosphere that made me want to stay and chat with my friends for hours. I highly recommend this pub to anyone looking for a warm and welcoming place to enjoy a drink and a meal. Whether you're stopping in for a quick drink after work or staying for a full meal, you're sure to have a great time. I can't wait to go back and experience the friendly atmosphere again!

This pub is ideally located between the Cathedral, Verulamium Park and the Roman Theatre. We got a warm welcome and quick service from the staff. Unfortunately had to sit next to the draughty back door and toilets because all the tables in the bar area were reserved. However, our fish finger ciabatta and festive club sandwich were both very tasty. We’d certainly eat here again but perhaps not in winter (unless we could guarantee a spot by the open fire!) Popped in as we were passing. Starters of Cod bites, Calamari & Chicken wings. All were excellent - both the cod & the calamari were very fresh the calamari having had the membrane removed. Both batters were clearly done in the kitchen - no catering pack food here. The chicken wings were plump and in a fiery hot sauce. Mains were a 'fish burger' in a bun - again the freshest piece of fish fried in a house made batter, gammon with fried egg & chips & the pie of the day - chicken & mushroom. The pie was a generous slice filled to the top with chicken breast. The only observation was the sauce in the pie was so good I would have liked a little extra on the side. This is what 'pub Grub' should be - made in the kitchen, made well & clearly with care & love. Price/portion is very good. Finally to a previous reviewer - true that the Service charge is not stated on the menu. This is 2022. A Government that claims we are a 'High Wage' economy - start getting real. 12.5% is the industry norm. Staff are difficult to find & believe it or not work very hard. You are not being ripped off - prices here are reasonable - do not begrudge staff their cut.

Had an excellent meal - the food was very good. However, it was only after we'd left that we realised they had added a 12.5% service charge to the bill without telling us. We were incensed. Nowhere does it say that they will include a service charge & 12.5% is very steep. It doesn't mention it on the menu so to then just add it very sneakily without telling anyone is totally unacceptable. It's the sort of thing you hear dodgy London restaurants doing not a local pub. As I said, a good meal but we will won't be returning because we don't like being robbed.

Staff were friendly, the food was really good and extremely filling, and prices were reasonable - especially given the helping sizes! Location is good for the Verulamium Park and Cathedral, or the Roman Amphitheater. There's not a huge amount of space so book ahead, and parking is tricky on a sunny weekend - try to find a spot around the edges of the Park and walk the ten minutes or so to the pub.
