Seriously good food with happy staff. The Pheasant is to die for. We will be back and cannot recommend highly enough.

Stunning food. A first time visit but will definitely be back. Starters of Moules Mariniere, Scotch Egg with Spicy Tomato Chutney. We both plumped for the Beef and Ale Pie, served with seasonal vegetables and chunky chips. Absolutely delicious! Lovely friendly service. Excellent value for money. Highly recommended.

We turned up (early) on a Friday evening without a reservation and luckily got the only free table. The food was excellent. We had rump steak stroganoff, the burger and fish & chips and all 3 were top class. The staff were great too. Would definitely go again if in the area, but would know to reserve a table!

Booked for Sunday Lunch & once shown to our table realised that nearly every other table was also reserved! (Obviously very popular, so be warned to book early!) The staff were extremely helpful and pleasant and our food & drinks arrived very quickly. The roast pork, beef & lamb we chose individually were very tender and good sized portions. The many vegetables were cooked to perfection too, and we even had room for desserts! Will definitely go back!

First visit in several years and it did not disappoint. Excellent food, fine ales and friendly service.

From the second we arrived we were made to feel very welcome, nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation was very clean and comfortable. Mark and Lindsay were great hosts and we were made to feel very welcome by the local customers in the bar on the evening. Great nights sleep and breakfast was excellent with quality ingredients.

This is the worst pub for customer service I have ever been into. We arrived on Sarurday afternoon with our dogs, and as we walked in the landlady appeared hostile and rude. She abruptly said ' Have you booked a table' we replied no we havant. so as we made our way to a table we were given disgusting looks as though we were dirt of the street. She had a very poor attitude and we felt embarrassed. We decided not to stay in her pub, and on the way out, she snilled and grunted at the man behind the bar who must have been the landlord. She made some comment to him which made us feel inadequate. Although we was not necessary dressed appropriately, we are not dirt off the street. We both happen to be key workers and have both worked tirelessly through the pandemic. I specifically have a high profile job and hold high standing. We certainly do not appreciate being judged and treated like dirt. We were looked down upon and made to feel inadequate. This is certainly not acceptable in this day and age especially with no customer service skills. A very rude lady with poor attitude. I certainly will not be recommending this pub to my colleagues.

Food was a bit disappointing, the four of us who had a meal all thought the same. It was expensive for what it was and the stroganoff was floating in oil. I have eaten this in various restaurants and countries and is cream based with brandy. Not sure what recipe they were following.

What an amazing pub. The food, the staff, the chef, the people (here’s looking at you Nick, Jane, and Mark!). I had the special, a monk fish and shrimp curry and my husband had the duck breast and we shared the sticky toffee pudding. All were so delicious, and by far the best pub food we had in England in our 16-day trip. And the pub itself was exactly what I wanted to experience. Wish we had gone earlier; we would have returned every night. Thank you for a terrific, local experience. We will remember you fondly.

Reasonable meal...Service a tad slow and Roast Sirloin of Beef a little too fatty for our liking...On the plus side plentiful delicious vegetables & gravy.

Great, proper country pub, with consistently good food, service and beer. We stay in nearby Richmond twice each year and always make sure we visit the Shoulder of Mutton each time - we’ve been eating here for about six years now. Booking ahead is useful as they’re usually busiest early in the evening (and closed Monday and Tuesday). There’s always a staple of things they do very, very well - such as a steak pie, fish and chips, fish pie, cheese soufflé, sharing boards etc - as well as specials, such as black pudding bon bons and deep fried squid. You’ll usually be spoiled for choice, put it like that. We’re big fans of Black Sheep and that’s usually on tap. The steak pie is consistently good, as are the double dipped chunky chips. Highly recommended.

Picked this pub/restaurant having read some earlier reviews and wasn’t disappointed. Situated is a small village we didn’t expect it to be too busy at 7pm on a Tuesday evening but found a few diners in there. A warm welcome from staff and a good choice of food which appeared to be freshly cooked and fairly generous in portion size. A very nice meal at a reasonable price. Worth the visit.

Walking in you get a warm welcome and you see a traditional country pub with a lovely warm feeling. Being a quiet midweek night I was surprised to hear it's nearly always fully booked for food. I now know why. There is an excellent menu, supported by a specials board. The food was superb, it could not have been better.

We visited this evening, myself, husband and two young children. From entering we were greeted with a warm smile, taken to our seats and asked for drinks. The lady engaged with our children the entire time and she was great! The service was fantastic from everyone we saw. The food was beautifully cooked. My son said the fish fingers were the best fish fingers he had ever eaten. So a big thank you! We really enjoyed our meal and your company.

A genuinely outstanding meal in a lovely village pub. Felt very Covid safe and the inside of the pub looked lovely, but the outside seating area was more than adequate in these times. The food was exceptional, undoubtedly one of the best pub meals I’ve ever had. Staff were all friendly too and if we get the chance again, we won’t hesitate to visit this little gem.

Gorgeous characterful pub, roaring fire, staff welcoming. Limited menu but fine with that. We had pate and tempura vegetables to start .. both ok, followed by roast beef which was 70% fat and inedible. We like al dente vegetables but what we were served were raw and inedible. Selected this pub based on Tripadvisor reviews, as a convenient place to meet my daughter for Christmas present exchange. It turned out to be a great choice. I had requested separate, adjoining tables, as we were two households. The pub was only too happy to oblige, and had placed us in a little alcove. Service was relaxed and pleasant, and we felt completely safe. The food was excellent, and can recommend the garlic prawns, fish pie, beef wellington and pork chops!You will not be disappointed.

After visit in the shoulder and Walton on Friday evening with some family and friends we got two starters and there was absolutely delicious so we decided to go back on Sunday afternoon and try them again and we can honestly say that they were beautiful the staff was fantastic cheerful and friendly and we would totally recommend the shoulder of mutton and we will be returning with my friends and family

We booked the family room upstairs . Food was exceptional and the service very friendly . Sadly we only visit once a year but James and his staff are always welcoming and accommodating. My friend and I went for a drink here last night! I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you all. We felt safe and were very impressed by how every precaution was made! We sat outside and didnt even need to use the card machine due to them having a very easy to use app. They also provide a very efficient track and trace system. We had a lovely evening enjoying the sun with a lovely bottle of wine. All in all fantastic service in a safe environment.Please support this pub and stay safe!

Wow! When I asked for the bill, it arrived promptly not just with a credit card machine but with sanitiser spray and a cleaning cloth, so the buttons could be cleaned Both before and after my transaction. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen that happen in a pub. It just shows the care and attention here.But that’s not why you should book in here. The staff are very efficient, there’s a buzz of happy customers & the food is amazing, from home made beef and ale pie, cooked to order, to a wide range of daily specials. We could only manage 1 dessert between 3 of us so go hungry. You’ll be glad you did.

We visited here in August. Was staying in a nearby Hotel so took a walk down here for our evening meal. I had phoned ahead in case needing to book so we had a booking. Were seated promptly and had time to look over the menu. Was also advised of what the specials were. We chose to share a Garlic Bread as a starter. This was nice. Ciabatta style Bread and light Garlic flavouring. Mains we both went for the Haddock and Chips. We both really enjoyed it. Large piece of battered Fish. Not overly Greasy and just right. The Chips were SO good. Super thick cut and double cooked. I also had Mushy Peas and these were fine. Also had a side of Beer Battered Onion Rings. Nice, puffy home made Onion Rings. Very tasty and my husband thought these were very delicious. Dessert was Sticky Toffee Pudding to finish off. Service was good, staff were attentive and great and we would definitely eat here again and would recommend this to anyone who wishes to try here. Homely welcoming village pub with some great flavoursome food.

Although very busy (which resulted in prob longer than average wait for order) the food we received was more than worth the wait! 5 of us shared 2x Turf Platters for starters - the black pudding bonbons were a particular highlight. For mains, teenage sons had the burgers which they devoured with gusto, whilst adults enjoyed an excellent beef Wellington, a Seabass special with prawns and a halibut with chorizo special. The vegetable side dishes of heritage carrots, broccoli & mange toute were perfectly cooked. Even though we were seemingly the last diners of the evening, nothing felt skimped on or rushed. It was a shame that we were full enough not to have dessert! We will definitely be back to try and experience that on another occasion! Thank you to both wait staff and chef for a lovely evening.

We were away on a m/bike trip staying at Scotch Corner so we’re able to walk to the pub. Lovely traditional pub, excellent pint of Black Sheep, great food, welcoming and friendly staff. Log fires for the winter. Wish we could have had more than two evenings here.

Lovely food a great treat, as I did not realise it was discounted it was a double surprise. Had steak sandwich which was beautifully presented with salad, also fish finger sandwich which was exceptional. Would love to have had full menu meal but know I could not eat so much. Saw other diners meals which looked supurb. Sweet menu was interesting and the panna cotta with pear was an art form.
