Popped in following a walk in west wittering, table available in the bar as we had a dog. Ordered and paid for food at bar-I must say it was the best roast I’ve had in a long time

Lovely Sunday lunch. Car parking was easy. You have to register at reception for a 3 hour slot. Friendly staff. Simple Sunday lunch menu. Very quick service. Nice relaxed atmosphere in the dining room.

We arrived unannounced on a busy Saturday lunchtime. Although the restaurant was busy we were accommodated with professional efficiency and empathy. Staff were brilliant, food excellent and ambiance low keyed. On our experience, thoroughly recommended.

Recommended by the skipper of the Bosham-Itchenor ferry, we found a spacious, characterful pub with original deco features like portholes in the doors. Landlord a bit prickly to start but soon warmed up. The Sunday lunch was very nice. generously served with a great selection of tasty veg, though the roasties were a little chewy. Great desert too. Dog friendly.

Great visit thanks to Claire and the chef. I thought I had booked for the Christmas lunch but had made a mistake and just booked for the normal menu. Claire went out of her way to help and went to speak with the chef to see if he could rustle up three Christmas dinners at short notice. He said he could so we enjoyed three delicious Christmas meals. Great customer service.

I’ve visited for drinks before, but wasn’t aware that they did lighter lunches too. We had sandwiches and pizzas and all were delicious at a decent price. With very good friendly professional service. Will definitely be visiting again for food.

Date night with my partner and we were in the mood to try this lovely and interesting pub as it's a new pub in the beer guide. We both like supporting the local pubs. When we finally arrived there at 8.35pm, we were not aware that the car was run by a separate company and felt we will have to stay for a drink. Then 1 of the 2 barmaids told us that they were closing shortly but was happy to serve us. We were told by the oldest of the 2 barmaids at around 9:05: Can I ask you to drink up as we want to lock up? I found this very rude and upsetting. This is not the way to speak to customers. It's a real shame as we were looking forward to going back again for lunch. This is not going to happen now. Please treat every customer with respect if you want to stay open and keep a good reputation.

We visited at Lunchtime, a Party of 4 plus a CockaPoo. A very pleasant, bubbly Barmaid Clare served us. Unfortunately they only had a limited menu so it was Drinks only. My Cockapoo was spoilt as they had a terrific selection of Canine Treats.

This pub has a great location but it is not optimised....patio should be tidier, and more presentable. Food choose good but the de.ivery did not match the menu details.....no tomato in the couscous and halloumi salad. No guest check back. I will try again but it needs to be better. Should the pub be closing at 9.30 pm ?

Given the cost of eating and drinking out nowadays, everyone wants to feel welcome and not like a nuisance when they go to the pub. It was not the case here. Promising first impressions were soon dashed by the off-hand, ‘can’t do’ attitude of the man behind the bar, who appeared to be the landlord. It was a beautiful sunny day so we were ok to sit outside but chilly in late Feb and after 45 mins or so I had to remind them we were still waiting. Only when I said we were freezing was a table found inside. The fish and chips were excellent, the best I’ve had in a long time, and this cheered us up no end. A nice lady came and checked everything was ok and we left on a more positive note.

We come to the area every year to visit friends and family and usually have a lovely visit here - but how this place has gone down hill now its under new management - atrocious!! I'd avoid this place like you would Covid. If you want to be greeted with rudeness and unpolite staff then by all means go. I'd avoid interacting with the gentleman Manager (rickard I think his name was - wears a waistcoat too... its a pub not the Ritz) Not sure who he thinks he is - but speaking to my wife the way he did was shocking. Rude and rolled his eyes a lot when asking questions about the area - like he couldn't be arsed to help!!Going forward we will drive a bit further out of the village a frequent elsewhere - unless this place gets better - should have realised with the amount of negative reviews it has received recently.Such a shame!!

Service was friendly but the traditional Fish and Chips was very disappointing. The chips were overcooked and the Traditional Fish was thick batter with a little fish to scrape out!. Having eaten many lovely meals there in the past I wont be returning again in the near future.

Went back to table,asked waitress she said it's being plated up,3.15 food arrived. Was offered free puddings as apology for terrible service. Waitress cleared the table and said she would return with menues. Never saw her again,waited twenty minutes freezing,and left. Just awful,ruined our afternoon no time to do anything and no more change for car park. Feel free to contact me regarding full refund!!!!

We had been recommended this pub and found it quite underwhelming. Our Sunday roasts were nice but the service was lack lustre. We were left standing at the bar for sometime before someone decided to acknowledge us. When it can to the meal, we were never asked whether we wanted condiments, the veggies arrived some time after our meal, we were never asked whether everything was ok and we were never asked whether we wanted dessert.

Excellent meal, great service and extremely friendly staff. Good range of drinks including local gins. Wine list was reasonably priced too. Would highly recommend!

There was plenty of space in the car park where we spotted parking charges applied and we had to register our registration number at the bar which we did on arrival. Our meal was delicious. We both had a smoked haddock fishcake followed by sea bass with pommes Anna. My husband had a lemon sorbet with spiced vodka and I had sticky toffee pudding. They were very well presented and good sized portions. It was 10/10. It far exceeded our expectations. Our children had the kids burger and chips which was a good sized portion followed by ice cream. We had a friendly welcome by a dark haired lady who took us to our table. She also came to check everything was OK during the meal. The man who took our food & drinks order was friendly and very polite and the young man who brought our food was very courteous. They were all very presentable.We look forward to our next visit.

Whether simply a drink, or staying for dinner, The Ship Inn staff made us very welcome on repeated visits this week, with lovely food and fabulous staff. Dog friendly, with plenty of Ayer bowls on hot days outside. Highly recommended.

We turned up on Friday afternoon having walked along the coast to get some lunch.Upon entering the pub a dark haired woman dashed over to us and rudely enquired “can I help you!” When I asked if they were open for lunch? She replied “you just walked past a sign stating we were closed for a private function” she then rudely pointed us to the door and stated she better put out a bigger sign for the likes of us.When we got outside we saw (and so did she) that the sign was only pointing up the road and we wouldn’t of been able to see it.Instead of apologise she said “well you came in the tradesman entrance”.We hadn’t… we had come in the front door, she simply had the sign the wrong way around.Incredibly rude with no customer service skills, I certainly won’t be returning..

We’ve been to the ship many times and the food and staff have been amazing. However not this time. It’s almost as if they have been taken over. There was choice in the menu but nothing compared to what it was. Just usual pub food nothing special like before.Staff tidying away for the night at 8.30!!! Stacking chairs in table! Went in at 6 pm to get a simple fish and chips for dinner, instead spent 10 minutes waiting in the bar to be noticed, to then be rudely told they weren't doing walk ins and directed us round to a below average and over priced pizza shack round the back of the pub. Having not bought anything we left only staying for 20 minutes. A week later received a 60£ parking fine. Nobody mentioned you still had to pay for parking without purchasing anything. If the service had been faster and more informative I would take responsibility for this fine but the only reason we were there for more than 2 minutes and didn't pay for parking was down to the service being poor.Been here in the past and it was lovely but now its an expensive disappointment.

Great, but very disappointed that pouring doubles without asking seemed standard and only noticed on the bill. Many might miss this. Very cheap trick for a classy place. Tacky.Spoiled an otherwise nice visit. Not sure we'd return simply down to trust and this grab for extra money. The prices were actually fine, the shady practise was certainly not.

We visited on Saturday 25 September 2021, and enjoyed a good meal in a good atmosphere. I may have missed it on the menu, but I would not expect a pub in rural West Sussex to apply a 10% Service charge even on drinks. It left a sour taste. Just be aware of this if you go there.

The sister Pub to Old House At Home at West wittering ,owned and managed by the same people and it shows totally uninspiring .The menus to both pups are certainly not put together by somebody who loves food and enjoys cooking inspirational meals from scratch these meals could be cooked by a student from a catering college .Lack any imagination both pubs in outstanding places right by the sea dishing up burgers, fish and chips and scampi really .You are paying for so called professional chefs, you can have my dad he’s a whiz with the microwave .These pubs shouldn’t be just for the holidaymaker never to return, but should be proud of the meals they dish up with an extensive changeable menu so everybody would like to return Wake up

I know the last few reviews have not been great but we have honestly just had such a lovely experience here. We stayed in the flat above the pub for a few days and the staff were nothing but courteous, friendly and helpful! The food was fantastic too. The fish and chips were excellent! So so yummy and all great value. Good wines too. We’d definitely come back - a big thank you to the wonderful staff who looked after us so well!

Needed a drink after our morning harbour boat tour, but this pub still insists on table service so if there are no free tables, sorry we're full. Half the family tables only had 1 or 2 people at them. We were turned away.

It’s easy to smile and take an order, but repeatedly chasing for condiments (why are they served in sachets at £18 a main) suggests pro activity Isnt part of the job description. Have visited a few times and overall impression was the staff were not a well oiled machine The overall vfm is not great. But the food is tasty. £8 for 5 slices of Baguette and some olives was ridiculous when for £7, the mackrel was fantastic

Really good beer, food was okay and do offer gluten free options. BUT an end of day a treat was spoilt by the price, the menu differed from the bill and the service charge of 10% was automatically taken without asking and not offering to return the tip back! Basically check before you pay

Despite a great location and good reviews The Ship was very disappointing. The main courses were good but when we asked for some ketchup, vinegar etc many loose packets were literally thrown into the middle of the table. Only 2 other tables so not a busy evening . 3 dessert spoons put on table- no napkins arrived with them! Desserts arrived - Eton mess and 1 white chocolate cheesecake … I wasn’t told the cheesecake would be deconstructed! 2 sections of purple mousse with pink sorbet and some biscuit crumb with a shard of white chocolate- Not pleasant at all. Manager wasn’t receptive to any form of criticism and proceeded to take £1.50 off our bill to cover the fact that I hadn’t been advised by her staff that the cheesecake would be deconstructed!! We unfortunately then cancelled another evening we had booked there.

Whilst staying in West Wittering finding places to eat has required booking in advance. Their booking system was very clear and efficient. Service and staff were friendly and attentive and efficient. Menu was small but varied - even better if you eat seafood. Food was excellent quality and good sized portions - fabulous Eton mess for dessert. Wine list was sufficient but a little on the pricey side. Tables were well laid out to feel comfortably distanced from other diners. It had it’s own car park with free parking for clients.

Struggled to find anything interesting on the menu! We initially thought we had a ‘snack’ menu, not evening meal menu! Burgers, fish & chips, scampi, pasta … nothing gastro about any of it.Antipasto was very poor … no interesting touches to go with the meagre quantity of sausage, leaves and pitta bread masquerading as ciabatta!Pleasant evening so sat outside at rear for a drink … mistake. The smell of dogs mess was disturbing.Couldn’t order whilst outside. Inside shown to our table for six… which was minus a chair.Food was poor and no atmosphere, which we were told was down to numerous ’no shows’ … wonder why!All in all, very disappointing for a gastro pub in a PRIME location. They should be packed, if they got their act together that is.

Had a booking at 3.15, arrived 3.05 queued at desk outside for 10 minutes to be told that we needed to ask inside. Ordered straight away, drinks arrived quickly but food took ages. After a large party that had arrived 20 minutes after us received all their food. So I enquired about ours as it was now 4pm. Food arrived with the explanation that they needed to train a new chef, but that didn't explain why other tables had been served so much more quickly despite being larger.As for the food? This was standard pub fare, with roast potatoes a little disappointing. Roast beef was a little stingy in terms of portion size but pork belly was tiny. Also was advertised as coming with crackling none of which was in evidence. Veg portions were generous, and burgers came with plenty of chips, which was fortunate as we would have otherwise left hungry. An automatic service charge was more than a little grating.
