Really pleased to have found The Ship for accommodation for 2 nights. First impressions on a very cold January evening: the pub was buzzing, staff were welcoming and friendly, room warm and with a bath (always a plus) everything very clean. Breakfast was good and we booked 6 of us for Sunday lunch. There's a happy and friendly vibe about this place. Thank you Sylwia - we shall be back!

Popped in for lunch while passing through. Ordered two senior citizen’s meals - fish and chips and ham, egg and chips as we thought you couldn’t go far wrong with this choice. Both meals were terrible - ham seemed to be coated in plastic and came with oven chips but egg was fine, fish and chips came as peculiar tasting salmon and again oven chips - ham and salmon must have come from a tin or packet as never seen or tasted anything like it before. Glad we went for the cheapest thing on the menu. The only saving grace was the pleasant and helpful bar staff.

We live locally but had not eaten in the Ship for a long time. We remembered that it had always had a good reputation for food. It was excellent! My wife's salmon was beautifully cooked, I mean perfectly cooked! The Cafe du Paris butter is absolutely fantastic. Their menu has some really interesting Polish specialities which we look forward to trying and the "Crew Pots" have a winter warmer written all over them. The service was great and it was a really friendly pub. We will be back, often! Thank you for a lovely lunch.

Stopped in for a quick lunch with my family whiles on a short trip to New Forest. Barman was extremely welcoming especially with our 3 year old. We had a fantastic lunch off of the daily specials board and the drinks were great too! We met the landlords also who were just as equally friendly and welcoming and gave us some great advice on good places to take our 3 year old, which we followed, and we all had a great time. They also let her play with the two pub dogs Milo and Murphy, which she enjoyed immensely and was probably the best bit of her trip!

On holiday in the area and was looking for a “local” to use. We are so glad that we discovered this wonderful proper boozer, where so many pubs have undergone a metamorphosis from pub to restaurant thankfully this pub has kept it “real” proper bar staff who engage with conversation, friendly and informative unlike many places where the staff are like robots. It’s a Greene King brewery owned pub but you wouldn’t think so as only IPA is available where the other real ales are all guests which is excellent. The ale quality here is excellent. We used this pub every day of our holiday and was made to feel like one of the regulars. Excellent

We arrived for a weekend away and we’re looking for some dinner at 8pm, the first out we went to and stopped serving and sent us elsewhere (not here) but we saw The Ship Inn and decided to see if they were still serving food! I am so pleased we did, the food was delicious and the staff could not have been more pleasant and set on making sure we had a lovely experience! I had the Louisiana Burger from the special menu and my husband had the Fish Pie which he said was the best one he has had yet, interesting use of potatoes on top rather than mash! Highly recommend, thanks so much!

First off, we interacted with four different staff during our dinner, bed and breakfast and all were exceptional. All were really keen to deliver the best experience. The food (dinner and breakfast) was tasty, hot and fresh which is all you really want. The bedroom was basic and perhaps a bit tired, but extremely clean. As a travelling cyclist, nothing is more important than an extremely safe place to leave your bike - not only is it an extremely expensive thing, but it’s also your pride and joy and your only means of your onward travel - and this place is better than any other as we stored them in the bar overnight!

This is a review of the accommodation, not the restaurant. We booked for the night of 26th December. On arrival at about 6.30pm, we were told that that the pub had closed early, and that there was now a private party going on. At about 10pm I went down to say that we could hear music coming upstairs, and the noise of what seemed like furniture being moved about (it turned out to be chairs scraping on the floor, the sound of which carried through the whole building). The landlady seemed to take note of what I said, but at midnight I had to go down again to ask them to be quieter, but she said that as it was a private party they basically could do as they pleased. I did say that in that case they should not have taken any bookings for that night. She wasn't apologetic in any way, and the noise continued on and off until well past 1am. Then we were disturbed again later by the owners going to bed on the floor above. We had a very poor night's sleep owing to all the disturbances. In the morning the landlady was nowhere to be seen, but we had breakfast, which was very good, and left without staying the second planned night, as we reasoned that the pub would be open again the next night, and with the sound insulation in this old building so poor, we would not get a good night's sleep. We left with no apology from the pub staff. So for anyone planning to stay there, either you should not mind being kept up late, or you should take ear plugs! Also, at 80 pounds per night B&B for two people, it would be cheaper to stay in a Premier Inn, and a lot quieter!

The staff where all very pleasant when we arrived wet and disheveled but a hot shower, beer, squid bites and a Large smoked mackerel pate starter and a delicious shared casserole (never seen that before) we felt replenished. A couple more drinks up to a large room at the back quite and comfy (bed). Up for a hearty fresh cooked breakfast plenty of toast and lots of tea and coffee a great atmosphere to watch the rugby nothing too difficult for the staff who were all very pleasant and friendly.

So we both ordered the Irish boxty dumplings - not knowing what to expect (apart from barman's description)...they were delicious and came with loads of crusty bread to mop up the creamy sauce. The prices were around where you would expect for quality food in a pub environment (£15 for a steak). My only criticism, which didn’t detract from the experience, was that the cutlery could probable do with a refresh. MORE AT TripAdvisor

Having just arrived on our two week holiday in the area, we paid our first visit to Fordingbridge that evening to both explore, and source a well needed evening meal.We chose the Ship Inn on two counts: firstly, it was busy (very often a postive sign of a good establishment when in a quiet location with a choice of venues); secondly, the Menu looked quite attractive with a good range of dishes at reasonable prices.Upon entering, we were initially seated at a table rather near the kitchen door and somewhat busy and noisy: upon spotting a vacant and more comfortable table near the window, I requested we move – this was not a problem at all with our friendly Waitress. Our quieter location allowed us to make two choices from the Standard Menu (at this point there were no ‘Specials’ that particularly took our fancy).I opted for the Flame-Grilled Chicken with Mixed Vegetables whilst my companion ordered Fish Pie. Both dishes were served promptly, together, were well cooked, very tasty, and with a nice touch – my mixed vegetables were dressed with a delicious but delicate Cheese topping. Both of us enjoyed these offerings and left happy, although the Drinks bill seemed a little steep for a pint of Shandy (£3.85 alone) and a small Lager. We returned again on the Saturday evening: the premises were much quieter than on the previous evening so, on this occasion we took the option of a ‘Bar Side’ table and decided to reverse our previous evening’s food order order, on this occasion I sampled the Fish Pie: it was delicious to the point of my almost wanting to eat the bowl in which it was served,my only regret being that there wasn’t more of it (I have a larger appetite than my companion).Great service, great food, but with one niggle that has cost a ratings review point here. Having felt a little ‘stung’ by the previous evening’s drinks bill, we both ordered Cokes as a cheaper alternative on the Saturday evening, but came away little more than 60p better off. I did query the previous night’s Shandy cost with our Waiter who, seemingly embarrassed, offered an explanation of ‘Beer’s more expensive here.’ As newcomers on holiday in the area we may have been a little naive: what particularly disappointed us is that, upon later visits to similar establishments in the same area, never again were we charged so much for drinks. This left something of doubt in our minds as to the integrity of explanation offered that evening; with this is mind, and other venues to visit, we didn’t return. This is a great pity as, insofar as service and value for money goes, The Ship Inn offers a first class range of options on its Menu, both ‘Stock’ and Specials’ and if the two dishes we tried on both evenings were anything to go by, most customers wouldn’t be disappointed. However if you’re on a budget, from our own experience, you'd probably be best advised to order a glass of water apiece...

The waiter (table service) was obviously new to the post and a little nervous and made a few mistakes but was very pleasant and eager to do a good job. The barman was chatty and efficient. The basic menu had the expected pub favourites and there was an extensive specials board so there was plenty of choice of food. It arrived well cooked and presented. We had a lovely evening in a nice pub for £25 a head. There is plenty of free public parking after six PM just behind the pub.

Ate here tonight with my daughter, shared a nice antipasto with bread and olives starter then I had a lovely cheese fondue. The waitress was very helpful and they substituted what I didn't like with things I asked for instead ( I don't like gherkins so they replaced them with really nicely done grilled mushrooms). All washed down with a couple of pints of nice real ale.

Phoned up to book in advance because the group of friends I was with all fancied a roast dinner being a Sunday. When we arrived there were no roasts! They must have been popular. Furthermore, there was no beef and ale pie! Things were looking a bit grim at this point but again we ordered something else on the menu. Talk about yummy, in our party of 10 each and everyone really enjoyed their dinner. It was homemade and tasty, the staff were attentive. I would definitely recommend a visit! I will be visiting again soon.

We booked here for a Saturday night meal , which was recommended by our hosts at the B&B we stayed at . I have got to say that this pub/restaurant has a fantastic atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and professional . I am now going to say something that is absolutely deserving of the chef there , you my friend are a credit to your profession , your food is amazing , if I could I would happily book to eat everyday in your pub and try all that is on the menu and know that every bite would be a marvel . Value for money and quantity spot on . Well done sir and a big thank you to all the staff again . To quote a famous saying I WILL BE BACK .

We were a group of seven looking for a good pub menu with a good range of food to cater for our different taste. Must admit when we entered the Ship it looked a little tired. However, must say we all thought the food was very well cooked and presented, nothing was too much trouble. A very nice young lad served us and the bar service was spot on. Good choice of draft ales. We would definitely go again and recommend the Ship.

We wanted to stop over the night in the Fordingbridge area for a skinny dip in the Avon and everywhere at a sensible price was fully booked except this one which made us a bit dubious. But we were pleasantly surprised. Our room was large with a huge window, which meant the room was well lit, it had sash windows that actually opened, a rarety these days. The beds were comfortable and clean. The bathroom was a little tired but functioned well, the shower screen could do with being larger as water did tend to end up on the floor. It had one of those noisy pumps on the waste which we wondered if was connected to the next room as it started up when they were up. We ate in the pub and the food was excellent, large portions and delicious. Fordingbridge, though small,is interesting for a wander with its river etc, there are cashpoints and a small supermarket nearby plus other restaurants. The only small bug bear for us was someone in one of the rooms just after 7.00 am shouting in what sounded like Polish, probably on a phone as we couldn't hear a reply, not the hotels fault. The total price was £72 with two full English breakfasts ( veggie version was the same but minus the meat, a veggie alternative would be nice) so was reasonable for May in the New Forest. We may be back.

Firstly i'd just like to say that the staff & service are excellent. We have eaten in The Ship many times over the last couple of years & it has been excellent, however, 6 of us went in for a meal the Saturday before last & it was dreadful! The fish, which i haven't had here before, was awful, it looked like it had come out of a 4 pack that had been purchased out of the freezers in the local supermarket, and at £8.95 for the meal was very, very poor. My adult daughter had what was described as 'hunters chicken' which as far as we are concerned is chicken in a bbq sauce, well i don't know what they put on it but it was disgusting to the extent she couldn't eat it & she's not a fussy eater, again it wasn't cheap, i believe it was about £12!So please, please, sort it out Ship, i have been recommending the pub food here to everyone before this meal!I'm afraid it will quite a while before we try The Ship again....shame really as it's very local for us.

Popped in for a Sunday roast. The food was ok, nothing amazing. But one of the vegetables was curried spinach and at no point were we told it was curried. I took a big mouthful and nearly spat it out. I hate curried flavour. I wish the waitress had explained what this odd choice of vegetable was. It was very odd with a roast dinner!

We were caravaning and wanted to go out for hot meal with friends. Went to The Ship asked if I could bring in my 2 small dogs. No problem if willing to sit by open log fire in the public area.Lovely & homely. Staff very friendly, had the steak, beer and mushroom pud with vegatables. Just melted in the mouth. Will be going again.

We stayed at the Ship when a few family members met up for the weekend (accommodation reviewed elsewhere), and we found that we had very little reason to leave the pub other than to visit another family member and have a walk through the town. The pub itself was very good, the beer was kept well and the staff very friendly. After a walk through the town we decided to eat there as well, and were all very impressed with the food, which was also good value. The pub seemed very popular and I can see why. Very much recommended.

You know the pubs that serve up roast dinners that are like school dinners? You know, where the meat is grey and tough, the potatoes are soft and the gravy is made from granules and the same no matter what the meat is? Well, this pub ISN'T one of them.We arrived as a party of 6. When the order was taken, the waiter warned us, "just to let you know, the beef is served rare." Our response: "excellent!" Shortly after everything arrived; lovely, rare roast beef, roast potatoes that were crunchy outside, fluffy inside and tasty. Tasty gravy, tasty veg' and large portions all round; basically, the kind of roast one wants to cook at home. Combine that with the relaxed, friendly vibrant atmosphere of a popular town pub with great beer and you can't fall off. It's not a restaurant, but I didn't want it to be. Nigh-on perfect!

We were visiting nearby Alderholt and The Ship Inn was recommended to us. We parked just behind in the pub's own car park, which was very convenient. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the friendly lady behind the bar, who showed us to our table and brought our drinks straight over. The waitress was prompt, polite, friendly and helpful. My Husband ordered Lamb, mozzarella and pancetta burger, chips and salad from the Specials board and I ordered steak, ale and mushroom pudding with saute potatoes and vegetables from the regular menu. The food was quick to be served and was absolutely delicious! The chef even popped out to see how it was. The value was great too, I was just disappointed that I had no change to leave a tip (I seldom leave tips!). The decor is a bit dated and the pub overall a bit dark, however the food more than compensated for this and the candles made it more romantic! Will definitely visit again!

Chose this pub as it offered a Sunday roast on a board outside. Unfortunately when we asked what the choice of roasts were we were told they had sold out. To be fair the area was full due to the motorcycle rally we were attending but if we know before we sat down that they didn't have any we would have gone elsewhere to eat. That said the food was good and we were not disappointed with our alternative choices.
