The Schoolhouse in Dumfries & Galloway

This is a great spot for lunch, especially during this dreich December weather. There is always a warm welcome and an extensive menu to choose from. I feel sure that most dietary needs can be catered for and enjoyed.

Went here last Saturday with my sister and niece. What a lovely experience. Staff are so friendly and helpful. Food is amazing and is very, very reasonably priced. We'll worth a visit.

Third time we've ate here. Once again food and service was perfect. Waitress very attentive and pleasant. Food absolutely delicious, all freshly made too. First visit for our friends who were so impressed booked for Sunday before we left. Highly recommend, always best to book a table.

We visited because a friend of ours went to school there and he asked us to go and take some photos for him. Despite school holidays being over the place was booked out for lunch on most days so we only had coffee and cake. We sat in the outside area shown on the profile picture. Our 3 dogs were welcome outside (I did not ask about inside as it was a nice day). Service was quick, the toilets were clean and the inside looked very nicely kept. The coffee and the hot chocolate was good, the cakes looked really nice and the one I had was nice and moist. Overall quite a good experience.

Wonderful place for lunch with great food, ambience and service. The restaurant is light, airy and atmospheric (you can clearly see all the features of the old school). Luckily the food is not reminiscent of schooldays! I had the huge selection platter (meats, pate, cheeses, salads, prawns and smoked salmon) - served on a slate board with homemade chutney and soda bread. Others had fish and chips, homemade quiche and a tuna panini. Everything was really nice and excellent value for money. Service was prompt and friendly and there is plenty of parking in a dedicated car park. Highly recommended.

We have often passed by on our way to Sandhead and kept promising ourselves we would call in. We finally made it whilst staying in Borgue village close by. We pre booked the Sunday carvery and were really impressed. So much so we returned one day for an early tea. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Tasty, well prepared food, attentive staff and a bright, airy space. The red cabbage on the carvery is a must, I’m not a fan of cabbage but this was absolutely delicious. The pastry surrounding the quiche on our second visit just melted in the mouth. The best pastry we have had the pleasure to eat. We whole heartedly recommend this divine eatery and will definitely return when we are next in the area. Well done management and team, best wishes for the future.

Coffee stop on way home to lincoln. Made my dog welcome, they have a comfortable seating area near entrance. Originally just wanted coffee but decided on soup when I saw chicken and rice soup on the menu. Served with a nice slice of chunky white bread the soup was tasty, well seasoned with good chunks of chicken. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I ordered a second bowl and it set me up for the rest of my journey. The long fining room is light and airy, the staff efficient and friendly and they obviously attract and keep lots of regular customers. Just sorry I'm not near enough to go back for Sunday lunch.

We have been going to the Old Schoolhouse for many years, except for the last couple due to Covid etc. before going we checked the website to see if it was dog friendly, which it was, we arrived to find that it had changed ownership, we waited to be seated, this was in an area where dogs are allowed, we were given menus, then another assistant came and told us we couldn’t sit there as they had a customer coming in an hour and she doesn’t like dogs or ever walk past one, obviously the customer was local and we were not as important as we are just visiting for a holiday, she was very sharp and rude so we just walked out in disgust. Don’t be fooled when they say it’s dog friendly. We used to love going when the previous owners were there, they were very welcoming and friendly and the food was excellent.

This is great for lunch or just cake! Friebdly staff. Food is absolutely delicious. We will be visiting again before the end of our holiday.

First time we have dined at the Old Schoolhouse, great food and lovely staff. Would recommend the fish salad, beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. Our waitress (South African lady) was very friendly and engaging, nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely return in the near future.

What a lovely find. We liked it so much we went 3 times in our 2 week stay in the area. Excellent food and service and dog friendly ! We would defiantly recommend and we will be back!

Me and my family are currently on holiday, we were traveling from Moffat to the south-east coast and stumbled across this fantastic tea-room! They were very busy, but managed to squeeze us in after some schedule-shuffling. We ordered sandwiches, scones and soup and it was easily the best food we've had so far on this trip. The staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming and the building itself was lovely. If I could give 6 stars I would.

2 visits, 4 meals, breakfast muffin, seafood salad were very good, chicken and mushroom pie of the day was well made but contained a small amount of chicken - disappointing, bread & butter pudding very disappointing ,little fruit or flavour, hard and soft patches from the microwave. Cakes look excellent.

Been meaning to drop in and try this place for years and finally have done ........ and very pleased we did. The haggis and cheddar toastie was lovely as was the chilli cheese wrap and we could not fault the coffee. Will be back and would recommend to anyone.

Lovely lunch again with my dear friend Anne. She was over-the-moon with her pork and leek pie and I really enjoyed my fish salad - beautifully presented and very tasty. Served again by our favourite member of staff. Well done The Old School House.

Visited restaurant for lunch during easing of lockdown. We didn’t gave a booking but friendly staff offered us a table by the fire. We ordered Club Sandwich and Salmon & Prawn open sandwich, with soft drinks. (Alcohol not permitted in restaurants at this time.) food arrived quickly, served with friendly openness. My open sandwich was excellent: delicious salmon and prawns and the Marie Rose sauce was light, not like some of the more gloopy sauce served in some places. Fresh local bread, salad and a few crisps all good. The Club Sandwich was really tasty and all ingredients seemed fresh.The restaurant was light and airy and set up well to deal with all Covid restrictions. It was full and everyone seemed to be enjoying their meal in stylish informal setting. All the staff who served us were really friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place for both light and more substantial meals.

Went in for lunch and was not disappointed. Firstly covid.....place was spotless and while we were there staff were on there hands and knees cleaning the floor, however when several people went to the toilet or left there was no mask wearing. Not much the staff can do about it but there it is.Lastly and for me more importantly food and service. The menu was great. In fact I had a big problem choosing what to eat. Eventually chose a toasty which was delicious, filling and excellent value for money. The coffee was also spot on, strong and a fair sized large. Service was provided by a lovely friendly waitress who knew the menu well and had tried the food and could speak about it from experience. A large part of the enjoyment of a meal rests with the waiting staff putting you at ease and ours was an expert in this.I can thoroughly recommend eating here and even though we are only in the area for the week we will be back

Popped in for a quick lunch and was amazed by the service and friendliness from the staff. Food was brilliant and super helpful and cautious with my food allergies. 100% recommend!! Theresa, our waiter, was particularly helpful and very welcoming.

Had a lovely 2 course Christmas lunch here and thoroughly enjoyed every bite, large portions and fantastic value for money. The restaurant is very Covid secure with the tables well spaced out and the staff are very friendly and attentive, we will definitely be back.

It was me, i ate nearly all the pie well tried. What a fantastic, friendly, professional, clean & COVID-19 safe place to visit would highly recommend a trip for an amazing meal served with a smile. Well presented, beautifully cooked & homemade the perfect combination and as i said the pie of the day rocks.

I have visited this restaurant often because the food is wonderful. Once the meal was too much for me and I was offered a "doggy bag". They are happy to split a dish between two people should it be too much for the elderly appetite. Fantastic service. Staff are warm and friendly. Their Cheesecake is delicious and they make a variety of flavours. It is light as a feather. Food is reasonably priced and you can just have a plate of soup if that's all you desire. I would recommend anyone to have a meal here.

We visited on Monday 21 September. The premises were fully covid19 compliant. The menu had a wide variety and the meals we ordered were just perfect. The staff were very friendly. We will most certainly return the next time we are in the area.

We stopped here on the way back to our accommodation in the local area - such a great find. The food was amazing - all locally sourced and you could really taste the difference. The service was also fab, so friendly and really made you feel genuinely at home. We enjoyed it so much we stopped for breakfast the following morning! Would highly recommend for anyone in the area.

Stopped whilst travelling for a late lunch. Warm welcome and a great choice of both snacks, cakes and full meals. Sandwiches were fresh, generously portioned and delicious. Beautiful and sympathetically restored surroundings for a quiet meal. Can highly recommend if you are in the area.

After they are forget about our lunch order(which can happen anywhere anytime!), they give us free drinks and also didn't charge for the lunch! Amazing, really appreciated. Lovely place, lovely stuff. All clean and tidy. Highly recommended! They deserve a nice tip too ;)

Excellent fish and real chips for lunch today. This is the nicest fish i,ve tasted in a long time. Staff were exceptionally pleasant and worked really hard to make you welcome. Plenty room between tables and hand gel machine at door making you feel safe from covid.

I love this place, there’s always a great vegan option or two, it’s comfortable, friendly and er Covid reassuring, masks worn by all staff, thorough cleaning in between in spite of Their busyness!

We stopped here after.a very wet afternoon of outdoor activities. We arrived about half an hour before they were due to close but the staff were still extremely welcoming and friendly. We just needed warm drinks and cake. I normally take pictures but on this occasion I didn't but wish I had for this review. The luxury hot chocolate was delicious with lots of cream, marshmallows and a flake on the side. The coffee was excellent too. The scones arrived warm with delicious jam and plenty of butter. The fudge slice was delicious, sweet and sticky. Perfect for my 12 yr old after zip lining through torrential rain. We did have 2 other cakes, but i can't remember what they were called, one was a biscuit with 2 layers, jam in the middle and icing drizzled over the top with a cherry. All very tasty cakes and scones. We weren't made felt to be rushed either even though they were due to be closing. Excellent customer service with excellent tasty treats. Thank you.

Was here a couple weeks ago with family and friends and Definitely did not disappoint. Just been back for lunch with friends and have to say the food was amazing. Very accommodating. Definitely be back with my husband very soon. Staff very friendly and polite.

Staff lovely n decor niceChicken goujons were averageRoast beef dinner not the best, yorkie pud was so well done it snapped in half n beef fell apart like it had been cooked well over it's time n had no taste, potatoes weren't great (my friend left hers) the veg was nice.Asked for horseradish 3 times and it was a very poor jar brand with no sharpness.We ordered chocolate cheesecake and it was not good at all. It was a thick dense cake of very little taste not chocolatey at all. Sadly won't be visiting again.

Stopped here for lunch on the way to Gatehouse of Fleet. Lovely food at reasonable prices, my husband particularly enjoyed the waffle for pudding. Would highly recommend, very spacious inside for social distancing.

Excellent midday meal, wonderful wholesome food. The vegan burger was delicious, the salad fresh and in a lovely piquant vinaigrette dressing. Homemade coleslaw and skin on fries were also perfect.the Club sandwich was huge, and egg mayonnaise sandwich was fresh, on gorgeous soft bread.The coffee was delicious, yummy scones with homemade jams and a packed Rocky road tray bake.great value for money. Rivals any restaurant in Dumfries and Galloway.Can't wait to return!

The best English breakfast! The smoked bacon was perfect. The serving staff were warm and very helpful. can’t recommend the food enough.

We popped in for some lunch as we had enjoyed our previous lunch visit.We ordered 2 Salmon Bagels and two drinks.My bottle of cranberry juice soon arrived, the cap wasn’t sealed, no pop as I released the cap. Thinking maybe the waitress had opened it for me, which she shouldn’t have of course, I thought otherwise.Inside the cap the yellow colour on the twist grip was worn away to black. The juice was nothing like the original Pago juice which is a deep red colour, and tastes very fruity.This was much more pale in colour by comparison, and tasted more like cheap supermarket cranberry juice to me. Just my thoughts on this.We were soon informed that they only had one Bagel! It’s only just midday, good start to the lunch! So we selected something else.I asked if this bottle was ever refilled, only to be told that, ‘No, this is a fresh bottle’. So what about the expiry date/best before date of late last year?.... Oh!!Although the food was very fresh, tasty and enjoyable, disappointing circumstances otherwise to say the least.

The Schoolhouse has reopened after its short winter break and I had dinner there tonight.I had a steak - absolutely terrific - cooked to perfection as always!It was great to be back - the usual friendly welcome and very pleasant and attentive staff.it was a wet, cold, miserable evening and it was lovely having a table beside the roaring coat and log fire.My favourite place to eat - I can always be sure of a memorable dining experience.

Best meal in Scotland! Precious people who welcomed non-locals. I didn’t know ham could melt in my mouth!!! It is that good!! My husband’s hamburger was the best he had ever had. Wish we were here longer is we could eat there again!!! Thanks for great gfree food!!

We stopped here for a break on the way to Cairnryan. We only wanted the soup which was excellent but on seeing how good the chips on the next table looked decided to have a portion . We really enjoyed them and a very generous portion it was.All in all a great place for a break.

For years I have been going into the School House for a great meal or simply just a coffee ( and I love the clootie pudding ). It's comfortable, clean and the staff are friendly and welcoming. An excellent place to visit.

We have been going to this restaurant on an occasional basis for many years and it has never been anything but first class. The food is all freshly prepared and sourced,in the main,locally. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is very cosy and welcoming.

We had booked a large group, everything was ready for us, including a warm welcome when we arrived. The food was great and home cooked. It was served with care, hot and freshly plated. Vegans and vegetarians and other food allergy customers were all accommodated so nicely.Overall an excellent visit.

I have been reading the good reviews on here about the Schoolhouse and as we were holidaying near Stranraer, we decided to stop for a breakfast on our way home. We were really looking forward to it ,but got delayed along our journey and did not get to the cafe until just after 11.20 a.m. That would not normally have been a problem, but there was a blackboard outside saying they were closing at 11.30 until 3.30 on that day. As I am disabled, one member of our group went in alone to inquire if they were still serving, the response he got was " Can't you read ? I have got a group of 76 in today and can't stop to do 3 breakfasts " Fair enough, we COULD read and that is exactly why one of us went in to politely ask if they were serving until 11.30 or actually closing . There was absolutely no need for the assistant to speak to us in that manner. We won't bother stopping there again.

Absolutely fabulous place to eat, excellent food and plenty of it. Staff were impeccable, smartly dressed, efficient, knowledgeable and helpful regarding both the menu and local places of interest etc. Highly recommended. Will be back next visit to the area.

My friend and I first discovered the Schoolhouse back in April and have been regulars ever since!!

A twenty minute stop for refreshment on the road to Cairnryan. 2 x tea, 1 x oatynut cake, 1 x currant square. All good. An extensive selection of cakes from the display. Service prompt.

Had the prawn open sandwich, it was served on slice of hard dry bread one lettuce leaf three thin slices under ripe tomatoes and a small spoon of cheap prawns on top.The beetroot salad was thickly sliced red cabbage, apparently there was beetroot in it! value for money £6.99 I don't think so. The service was fine, but the young girl serving us was clearing tables between preparing our salads using her hands for the lettuce and tomatoes with no gloves on, between tasks she did not wash her hands.

Driving along the A75 and saw the sign for the old schoolhouse and decided to stop. So glad we did! They have a very extensive menu which caters for just about every taste, including a dedicated vegan menu! We sat outside as the weather was hot and sunny, and it was very pleasant. The dishes were well put together and totally delicious. We ate here twice on our holiday and were not disappointed either time. Generous portions and well-priced, we would absolutely recommend this place! Inside was tidy and welcoming and the staff were really lovely. The local ale “Galloway Gold” was superb. The vegan chocolate cake was awesome, too. When we finally move to the area in a year or so we will be coming here more regularly!

Great coffee and a selection of wonderful scones and cakes, this is by no means everything they serve. Staff were very friendly and efficient small establishment with lots of character.

Was in the Schoolhouse today for lunch and was delighted (but not surprised) to find out that Caroline and her team have been nominated for the Dumfries and Galloway Best Business Award 2019 in the "Best Eatery" category, and in fact have been shortlisted for the final.

From mouth watering salads to roast beef Sunday lunch. Breakfast is a must, but I'm sure you all would agree that's if your lucky enough to visit. It's the utterly amazing choice of desserts available. All homemade by the owner Caroline. Great obliging staff, fully licensed so you can have a nice glass of wine with your meal. Or a cold beer !

Had a lovely lunch with with family. The place is spacious. Plenty of choice on the menu . My only downside was . I thought I would buy some cakes to take home to have with a cup of tea . I found them very pricey. I was charged £2.95 per cake. I had 4 if them. So that was nearly £12.00. Thought that was very expensive to carry out . It was tray bakes. I certainly wont do that again as I felt that was a RIP off . But what we had for lunch was nice .

My partner and I visited for lunch with our young son (19months) who decided when we sat down he didn’t feel well and wanted mummy cuddles. We had already ordered starters at this stage and whilst he slept in my partners arms the food arrived, the hummus and falafel was amazing as was the home made pate.

This is a terrific place to stop for lunch or tea. They also have A selection of Gins , numerous lovely snacks , cakes and wholesome meals with local ingredients. Recommend.

It is a lovely place to visit to eat or just have a drink, the staff are all friendly and the food is excellent. Everything is freshly cooked and all the cakes and bread are freshly made. I love it :)

Love this place, it has a nice feel and they have a great range of options including vegan and were really accommodating, making me a vegan dish when they’d run out of those on the menu, the highlight was vegan chocolate chocolate cake.. mighty!!

I visit the Schoolhouse reasonably regularly and was confident that, when I returned recently with two friends, the service and food would live up to expectations.

Looking for a place to have a bowl of soup and sandwich for lunch, we chanced across Caroline and her wonderful restaurant. Some delightful menu options and special service. Try it! You won’t be disappointed. The assortment of cakes (all home made) is incredible!

We are back up in Kirkcudbright from Manchester for an early Easter break and we had dinner in the Schoolhouse tonight.

So I have been working in and around the Castle Douglas/Kirkcudbright area for the last couple of weeks and I quickly established that this was "THE" place to come for a warm welcome, delicious coffee and cakes, fantastic home cooked food and some of the most friendly and helpful people you could ever hope to meet.

Was taken by the family to my favourite restaurant for a Mothers Day treat last Sunday lunchtime.

Lunch in midweek Had two 2 course lunches for just under £27 and it was not good value.

Went last Sunday 17th March . Had soup you get choice of small or large I chose large it was a starndard size bowl soup was awful worst I,ve ever had anywhere. My wife had double burger and chips and dad had burger and chips . The buns were soggy , the burgers were tasteless no flavour just big lumps of mince really in a bun . Another place gone to the scrap heap in the area serving bad food

We are always impressed by the food and service here is second to none. It’s fresh local and tasty. Do not go past without popping in.

I visit Kirkcudbright twice a year and always stop here for lunch .The School House pie with veg and chips is the meal I choose - tasty ,substantial and piping hot .The ambience is relaxing and the service friendly .

A lovely venue, atmospheric and easy to find (well signed).

Was delighted to be back in the Schoolhouse today which is open again after their well earned short Winter break.

We are not regulars, but call here when on a journey, heading south from Ayrshire on the A75. It's perfect for a much needed coffee break, a breakfast, or a quick lunch. Fresh coffee, freshly made sandwiches, delicious cakes. The owner is always on hand, and is happy to let you have a taster of something new. The staff are always friendly. A gem of a place. Highly recommended.

The Schoolhouse is a hidden gem. Wonderful freshly cooked food, scrumptious cakes with a pleasant atmosphere and excellent service. Owner Caroline makes everybody feel so welcome, well worth a visit.

I went in everyday for breakfast before I started my day trips and loved it. When I first arrived and saw the sign to wait and be shown to a table I thought this is much more up market than places I go for breakfast.

We were late in for lunch 2:15pm), in late October, and that wasn’t a problem (which it often would be around this area). My husband had a burger and was very pleased with it. I had the pie of the day, which was chicken and leek - lovely thin short pastry, absolutely stuffed with filling, plus a good portion of 4 different vege and chips.

Went today Friday 12th October for a birthday treat , even though weather was awful outside it was lovely and warm inside with lovely fire. Staff are so lovely , place so clean . Food amazing , we had the special menu of the day £13.95 for three courses . First I had the lentil soup delicious, wife had the black pudding and cream cheese I think said was lovely , dad had homemade chicken liver pate I tried it brilliant, I had wonderful macaroni cheese, chips and salad to be fair I should of said no salad , dad had the roast chicken I was going to have the roast but not big on chicken, it came with lovely big roast potatoes, two big bits of homemade stuffing and four veg served separate, wife had the chicken curry and rice it was superb. Wife and dad had ice cream and I went with the ginger sponge and custard . This could be best restaurant in Dumfries and Galloway I,ve been to a few but never had a meal close to as being good as today's . Will be back

When my car broke down today the very kind staff let me use their car park while I waited for a breakdown truck to arrive. They gave me a free coffee and even let me use their phone! Top-notch Galloway friendliness and hospitality!

First time I have stopped at The Schoolhouse even though I had passed it many times with driving coaches. Stopped here today with 33 passengers who where on a mystery coach trip. I had soup and sandwiches which was excellent, even though they have a big menu and all produce is locally sourced. Service was quick and nothing was too much trouble for staff who all where very cheerful and nothing was too much to serve such a large group at once. Would recommend it to anyone who is traveling along the A75 for somewhere to eat. Look forward to visiting again soon.

On our journey from Manchester to visit relatives in Belfast, we stopped off for an early lunch at the Schoolhouse- excellent food and slick service which was good as we were on a tight schedule to get to the ferry - thanks.

The choice of food is large , all tastes and ages are well catered for , and if you only stop off for a tea and coffee , the selection of home baked cakes will not fail to disappoint The car park is huge and no problems parking , and the exterior has lots of well kept plants around the walls. Inside the place is very inviting and with plenty of tables , a lounge area and not one but two log fires !!!

I had the steaks at the Schoolhouse recommended to me recently by a friend and decided to give them a try.

Need to do their homework! Very slow service. Starters arrived after 35 mins - apparently ‘chef’ had burned my first two Falafel, the third effort was greasy mush with a very boring salad. Pate starters came with large dollop of pate, 2 little oat biscuits and same pathetic salad. Main courses weren’t any better. Smoked Haddock Mornay - more like soup with hardly any fish! Chicken and Leek Pie, tasty but asked for no gravy! Guess what? Arrived swimming in gravy and waitress, who was miserable, told me it was the last piece! Shame, because could have been so much better! Out of their depth as it was rather busy. Staff need to learn how to smile!

Nice little place for lunch on the way to where we stayed. Staff friendly food good and variable prices. Their orange juice reminded me of what I used to get as a child from my local dairy, lovely.

Had lunch there, the Schoolhouse pie was out of this world, so my husband says! I had the soup and sandwich, it was very good too. Also had breakfast there on the way home and we thoroughly enjoyed the generous portions. The deli side is enough to make a person swoon, the delicious cakes and scones on display are irresistible. We ended up taking cakes home with us both times we visited, just couldn't resist. The staff were lovely too. This place is a must visit!!
