100% an amazing place. Ordered all of the starters and a selection of mains! Everyone great. How they made that Tomato and Pesto Soup blows my mind. The Greek Fries 😍 I cannot describe the genius here! Recommended!

Saturday night is Covid treat take out night and this week we chose The School House. I had the focaccia chicken burger with skin on fries and hubby had pressed burger in a brioche bun with pork and bbq sauce with skin on fries. Safe collection with social distancing adhered too. The food was a good sized portion and really tasty. Really nice treat for staying in. Thank you and hope to see you again soon

As a lifetime resident of the village, South Normanton has never been somewhere noted for its culinary prowess when it comes to dining. I feel that The School House has put the village on the map as a place to visit for fine dining and culinary excellence. My partner and I have eaten here many times and we have yet to be disappointed. We are always greeted with a smile from the friendly staff and the owners, Sophie and Martin can’t do enough to accommodate any needs you may have. The food speaks for itself; locally sourced (some homegrown) and of very high quality. We have always left feeling satisfied and we look forward to exploring each new seasonal menu. The decor is classy, yet quirky which definitely adds to the overall experience. Definitely worth making a trip to the village of South Normanton for.

It’s great to be able to visit here for a meal again. The takeaways have always been excellent so it’s great to be able to sit down again in the restaurant. All of the covid precautions are in place but you still get the same warm welcome as before. Great food, lovely atmosphere and the garden is looking superb. The mackerel starters were really fresh and the steaks were cooked to perfection as always.

Me and the missus had wanted to try the schoolhouse but then lockdown happened, we had kept an eye on the social media for when they were opening and as soon as they did we booked for Sunday lunch, we had a fantastic time! I had vegetable soup for a starter which was great very tasty, for the main I had beef with sides of cauliflower cheese, stuffing, pigs in blankets and veg with mash potato. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. For a pudding I had a toffee apple tart which was light and tasty not to much for after the meal. The portion sizes were perfect I left very full and satisfied. There was social distancing measures in place which included spaced out tables, hand sanitiser when you walk in and on every table, a one way system and the staff all wore masks, we felt very safe.Overall we were very happy and would definitely go again and most certainly recommend!

As a lockdown birthday treat the family had a Sunday lunch £15 - starter and beef dinner.Prawn cocktail best of starters. The salad had made the pie and cracker of the plough mans soggy. Likewise the bread stick in the continental meat platter. The dinner was barely edible and frankly looked a mess.Yorky dried out and potatoes not palatable. Probably better if you are there in normal times

This restaurant provides a comfortable and relaxing setting in which to dine. Ingredients are very fresh and combinations are excellent. My leek and smoked chicken terrine had very well flavoured chunks of chicken, which did not overpower the leeks. Crisp chicory leaves, flaked almonds and a delicious pickled pear accompanied the terrine and made for a superb starter. My husband's Shropshire Blue croquette had a wonderful texture and was equally flavoursome, although the cheese was less obvious in the croquette than expected. Both racks of lamb were beautifully cooked and accompanying vegetables, although small portions were really tasty. Finally, desserts were a tour de force - a silky smooth pear tarte tatin and chocolate cheesecake. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and also thought the Rioja was very good value for money. Reading a previous review, I would agree that portions are small, but disagree that the food was average. Each course was prepared with flair and attention to detail in my opinion.

Visited here for a meal, nice place, the staff were fine, overall it all seemed acceptable except the food was so disappointing. E.G. we ordered some menu advertised 'home made bread' and received one piece of bread roll the size of two small boiled eggs which it turned out was not home made, and main meals which were the size of a decent starter elsewhere and nothing special in taste. You need to order lots of extras to get a decent sized meal. Small portions of stunning food are what you expect at a quality restaurant but not small portions when the food is only average. The school house needs to decide either to retain the small portions but raise the quality or keep the current food standard but increase the quantity in our opinion. Its often the cheapest food items that are the easiest to give you more of? You go abroad and get a basket of bread free, but here £2.95 for 20p worth of roll which turned out not to be home made will never impress anyone!

Booked relatively last minute and were asked for a deposit - which we had no problems with and duly paid. We then went for a meal but one of our party of 7 was ill so only 6 coud make it. We had a very good meal, food excellent, service good and thoroughly enkjoyed the experience. However when we came to pay the bill I mentioned the deposit, and they said that as only 6 peole had arrived they would not refund the £5 deposit for the 7th. person. I pointed out that the bill was well over £300 and felt a deposit was to protect the restaurant against "no-shows", not against one person being ill. However they refused to refund the £5, which was very short sighted as we duly reflected this in the tip. It was a shame because the food and service were very good, and it did seem a pity to devalue the experience by being petty and and a little churlish.

The food was very nice, and was presented really well which was a lovely touch. The woman who served us, can’t remember her name however, went out of her way to check that all the food they were serving me was vegetarian and fit my diet. I was soooo thankful for their wonderful hospitality. I think that the menu was fairly limited, with only a selection of dishes (2 veggie ones) but due to their size this was understandable and it created no issues. Would recommend for a moderately priced date night, (2 starters and mains with a jug of tap water and 2 espressos to finish came to about £50).

Very accommodating for gluten free. Food was absolutely top notch, the bisque was particularly fantastic and our 14 year niece raved about the carrot and ordered more! The scallop and hog croquette were so tasty. I had the mushroom wellington which was perfect and the others had the short rib of beef which was cooked to perfection. The desserts were fine but not to the standard of the rest of the meal. When the bill arrived we thought they had missed off one of the wine bottles we ordered - so the price was a delight too. Biggest gripe is the lack of offerings for children. Kids had a thin slice of garlic bread, small plate with one sausage and and chips and a ice cream and was charged £12.50 each. Queried the cost and was told the price reflects the quality and fresh ingredients. It was a sausage and chips!!! Dont go here if your kids are like most a bit fussy, its not child friendly. Lots of similar restaurants serving quality ingredients in a similar price range that cater for kids at a resonable price.

This is a little local gem; wish we had one like it where we live in South London. Everything is homemade and packed with flavour. Homemade focaccia turned up promptly and was so soft and delicious, with its topping of caramelised onions, we had seconds. More home baked bread - ciabatta this time - came with the tomato and red pepper soup. Our six friends had panko crusted soft boiled duck egg and prawn pil pil - both excellent. Mains varied from roast lamb, cod and an amazing bowl of roast chicken with a variety of vegetables including a topping of crispy carrot - the vegetable accompanyments were all cooked with the same care and imagination as the main ingredients. One pal had steak which was served with the chunkiest chips and huge onions rings. I had the best gnocchi I have ever eaten, soft and chewy with a crispy shell which had been pan fried in butter served with a selection of wild mushrooms - my god it was fantastic. Homemade (sorry to repeat myself but too often restaurants think they can get away with frozen synthetic c**p from the Brake Brothers catalogue especially bread and puddings) desserts included strawberry cheesecake, crème brûlée, and passion fruit sponge with a zesty orange sauce and orange crème fraîche. Good selection of coffees and teas ended a memorable meal. We persuaded Chef to come out for a round of appreciative applause - she certainly deserved it.

The menu had obviously changed and my husband said this is what it used to be like years ago, very nice choice of starters and mains. For mains Husband had lamb, I had poached beef. Both lots of flavours, faultless. Husband had prawn starter which was also very nice. We had bread and olives also which were fresh and full of flavour. We didn’t have room for dessert unfortunately but it looked nice on the menu. Cocktails very original Turkish delight g&t;! Very moorish! Will definitely be returning!

Went yesterday and had the place to ourselves as no-one else was in. Food was delicious. i had the chicken and the only annoying part was it been served in a bowl instead of a plate. Dessert was lovely as well.

Cold, snowy weather left me and my partner down and bored, so when we saw they were offering brunch to battle the cold blues we knew we definitely had to go. We were met with friendly staff and sat straight away with a pot of perfect tea. The Full English was absolutely delicious and filling; with such a low price of £8.95 the quality exceeded expectations. We finished off with a strong coffee for myself and luxury orange hot chocolate for my partner. Such a perfect morning in a lovely local restaurant!

First impressions as we arrived were not good. The small car park was full, with a mere 4 or 5 cars, so be prepared to park on the road. When you step into the Schoolhouse it’s like entering a different world from the uninspiring outside. The internal decoration is quirky and very much to our taste, a lot of up cycled furniture and fittings, but done tastefully. There are references throughout, to the buildings previous use as a school. A warm welcome awaits and you are able to sit for pre meal drinks in the bar area, and get this, gin and tonics for £4. No rip off prices here. We went during the valentines promotion so we were fixed to the set menu, however there was specials board to chose from. Menu is limited to a certain extent, but this is no bad thing. I think it’s a sign of a good chef by doing a limited menu very well. I had the duck for starter, which was well presented, perhaps lacking in seasoning for my taste, but still very nice. For mains, I had the rump steak which was served on a bed of mash and vegetables in a perfectly balanced pepper sauce. For me however the sweet was outstanding, the lemon and raspberry cheesecake with a raspberry sorbet was an utter delight. A very enjoyable evening. The rest of our party all enjoyed their meals with empty plates all around.

Having found good ratings for this place on Trip Advisor, we called in for lunch on a Monday at around 12:30. Disappointed to find it closed with no explanation or opening times displayed. Greatly inconvenienced us as we were on our way to a funeral without too much time to spare and had to find somewhere else nearly making us late. Just checked their website for opening times but that is also closed! ("For maintenance"). Have they gone out of business? They will do if they don't keep potential clients informed.
