We came here after the Ely beer festival, on a Saturday night when most other places were full. The food was nice - I had the ribs - but it was all so expensive. The staff were friendly. I found the metal tables were pretty cold though! If it was reasonably priced I’d certainly return, but not at those prices I’m afraid.

A good sized pub, very popular at the weekend so there is a good buzz about the place. I ordered the beef shin ragu gnocchi, which unfortunately was SO greasy. The gnocchi itself and the beef was nice, but it was sitting in a bowl full of liquid fat rather than a sauce like I was hoping. I understand when slow cooking this cut off beef you get a lot of fat, but I would expect it to be strained off somewhat. My mouth felt coated with grease for some time after, which was unpleasant. My friend ordered the chicken burger, which was a few pieces of very thin fried chicken, again very very greasy. A thicker piece of chicken with lighter batter would be much better. Also - a suggestion to the management. The booth seating is tall so your feet can not reach the floor, and there is nowhere for your feet to rest on under the table. It is uncomfortable to have your legs dangle with no support, so I would strongly recommend the management looks to put footrests/bar or something under the booth tables to make them more comfortable.

Welcoming atmosphere - met friends for lunch and it was clear that it was a popular place with the locals, which is a pretty good indicator that you are going to have a good time. The food was wonderful - I don't normally have fish n chips outside of a chip shop but this was exceptional. Huge piece of cod, massive (too large if anything) chips and peas and homemade tartar sauce. Couldn't fault it. For a drink I had the Blue Moon White belgian beer - WOW!! It was so smooth and tasty I had to stop myself from drinking it too quickly. A thoroughly enjoyable lunch.

Nothing particularly wrong with the service or ambience but the drink prices are just ridiculous. A pint of Neck Oil is £7.40! The bar staff blamed it on the brewery when we challenged them on it, but this popular pint is well under £7 in any other Cambridge pub that I’ve drunk it in. Other drinks equally expensive. Just no need for it and we now won’t be going back. Ely has plenty of other decent pubs where you get much better value for money.

Friendly staff serving a good range of drinks at reasonable prices. Food isn't your normal foodservice offering from a random supplier, behind the scenes there must be a talented chef. Daily specials available like burger chips and a pint £15 and the quality is very good.

The tastiest full English breakfast I have ever eaten in my life! I stayed at The Royal Standard on Saturday night with 2 friends for our visit to the Luxmuralis show at the Catherdral and my only regret is that we didn’t eat our evening meal here as well as breakfast. It’s a beautiful character filled building and the rooms are tastefully decorated with modern facilities. Super comfy mattress, lovely squidgy pillows and a lovely rainfall shower. The staff were lovely and welcoming and advised us where to park and when for free. The breakfast was my highlight though and I loved getting to eat it by the window people watching. Overall great value and location.

We live locally & The Royal Standard has become our favourite place to eat. We had dinner there last night and even though it was very busy staff were ready to make our evening enjoyable. Table service was excellent from start to finish. Both my pork tenderloin and my husband’s fillet steak were outstanding: food quality, flavours and presentation. There was a buzzing atmosphere in the bar and relaxed chat in the restaurant. We had a perfect evening and will be back soon!

This was our second visit to the Royal Standard in Ely and, once again, it didn't disappoint. We had a small double room as the one we had before wasn't available but this was equally as comfortable. The staff offer a warm welcome and we accessed our room immediately despite arriving before the requested check in time. On both occasions we've found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful, either with local knowledge or assisting with luggage. We ate in the bar on the first night and were offered a wide selection of food and drink. Wednesday night was burger and a pint for £15 which my husband enjoyed. Breakfasts can be taken between 7 and 12 so no rush for those wanting to enjoy a lie in. We had a day in Cambridge as the journey is only about 11 minutes so perfect for a trip out. We'll definitely return in the future.

After booking an event at the nearby Maltings, we decided on this for a one night stay. Very good choice. We were shown to our room by a very helpful young chap who efficiently gave us info on TV, heating etc. We booked a junior suite which was very nice. Bar is very welcoming albeit a little pricy ( this is Ely, a junior version of Cambridge I always think) so to be expected. We booked breakfast and I'm glad we did. Very nicely presented and again, lovely staff. Overall, a very pleasant stay. Hopefully we will return.

Decided to stay at this place due to its location which is close to Ely cathedral. There is a large free car park at the rear of the premises and it only takes a minute or so to get to pub. We were greeted with a very warm welcome from the female members of staff and very quickly shown to our room for the night. It looks like the rooms have been recently upgraded and are in an excellent condition. We were at the top of the building with windows both to the front and rear. Although the windows are wooden there was barely any road noise overnight. Bed was comfortable and I felt at home. We decided to eat at the pub for our evening meal. Wow! The portions were by far the biggest I have ever had in similar locations and my eyes were way bigger than my belly and sadly I left a lot of food, though I must stress had nothing to do with the cooking as everything tasted so good. Breakfast was a similar tale. Clearly everything was freshly cooked as breakfast took around 30 minutes to arrive which was fine as we were continually asked if we wanted more tea. I wouldn’t hesitate to return given the opportunity. Lovely location, lovely staff and lovely food.

Bar area both baby and dog friendly, with a very safe highchair. 3 different breakfasts ordered and as fussy eaters we were all impressed with the meals presented. Baby portion of scrambled egg on toast was well cooked and creamy. My eggs Florentine was perfectly cooked with runny yolks, and simply the best Hollandaise sauce I have ever had. Due to illness I was only disappointed that I could not finish the generous portion. The all day breakfast, and bacon with pancakes and maple syrup were equally well presented and reported as excellent. In summary the food was exceptional, the staff were very pleasant and the atmosphere relaxing. I will definitely visit this pub again when I am in the area.

We had a meal on the evening, my wife was able to select two sides in place of a main, all well presented and good quality. The price was normal for a hotel in this part of the country. We had breakfast included in our deal, very good sizeable helping, may not be to everyone’s taste or ability to finish! I would have preferred to be offered a refill of coffee, I’d finished mine before my food arrived. The bar in the evening was pleasant, again prices reflect the area. The staff were very friendly. In the time of Covid and the troubles faced by the hospitality it’s difficult to write this but this was one of the most disappointing restaurant meals I have experienced in quite sometime. It was recommended by our hotel and has a four score on TripAdvisor so we overcame our misgivings when we walked into what seemed like a rather dingy unwelcoming place. There was Covid tokenism. We scanned our NHS app when we saw the Q code but no one saw us do it or asked us if we had.In fairness the young waitress was actually quite good but the menu was pretty uninteresting. Except that is for the rather complicated way they work out the price of their steaks. They were priced in 2oz rates then anything extra was charged at a price of £4 each side. When in doubt stick to the basics they won’t get that wrong is our motto. Didn’t work this night at least not for me. The Bread with olive oil and balsamic was a few thin warmed slices of French bread. I think the bread was the days left overs warmed to hid the staleness. Certainly tasted like it.The friend calamari came in very thin strips but with very thick batter. My main burger course consisted of a very over done pate of beef, a soggy bun, a nondescript dressing and French fries thrown over the rest of the plate. In fairness my wife had a decent fish with her fish and chips. The coup de Grace was when the bill came and we were overcharged £12 for some gin we never had.

We stayed two nights here and found the staff all extremely pleasant and helpful. The various Covid 19 protection requirements were all in hand and carefully observed. Our room (Number 3) was, on arrival, was terribly hot. If you need to change the temperature in Room 3 you have to move the bedside table and dive down beside it to find the thermostat. The shower room radiator was also very hot and fully on all the time but there was a warning in place about this, so once we had the room temperature adjusted we simply closed the shower room door at night to keep the heat out. The room itself was small and somewhat gloomy, having black furniture, one fancy black wallpapered wall and a black metal modern ‘four poster’ bed frame which made the room feel even smaller. The bedside lights had black solid shades, making it impossible to read at night. However the bed was extremely comfortable and the bedroom and shower room were spotlessly clean. The excellent shower room was a huge plus point, large and with a superb shower and excellent quality thick towels.Food: we totally agreed with other reviewers who found the food overpriced, but having said that, we enjoyed our meals (all but one dessert). Also the online menu did not match the menu we were offered, which had a fair amount of kimchi and other slightly Asian slants to the accompaniments. Our steaks were excellent but I too take exception to paying £4 each for small portions of extra vegetables. The pricing was more suited to a restaurant meal than to food served in a pub, which was somewhat lacking in atmosphere. Breakfasts were very good, with a wide choice – no complaints there at all.The location is excellent, being a very short walk from the cathedral and parking was free and close to the pub but the arrangements, courtesy of the local council, were somewhat complicated, requiring residents to move their cars during the day from one part of the car park to another.

Recently stayed at the Royal Standard on a short break. Very attentive staff and good Covid practices in place. The room was small but well appointed and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was great. Full English was well presented and very tasty. We’ll definitely stay there again when in the area

We stayed here for one night and were not disappointed..staff ( Lynn ) were friendly and courteous at check in and in the morning at breakfast. The stylish room was not over big, but the bathroom was large with a bath and shower. Breakfast was fresh and hot and the choice plentiful. Slight downside is old windows that didn't block out road noise.Good location ( approx 5 mins to Cathedral ) with free parking in Municipal Car Park at the rear of the property Very good value for money.

The Standard is a nice place to eat, had several meals here, but the last was disappointing. The food was fine, but took ages to arrive, a bit strange for a half-full restaurant in early evening. In the meantime we ordered a second drink. The bill came to about £15 more that I expected, the waitress even noted my surprise and I queried the price of a Gin & Tonic. Hmm, small mixer bottle of tonic over £3 was indicative of the overall hike in prices. For the money we paid, there are other better alternatives to be had locally.

Cannot complain at all of the quality of the cooking and the food - it was all very good. The only problem we had was the price - it was well above average especially for the steak meals which nearly totalled an eye watering £40 each once the sides (£4 each) are factored in, which I'm sorry is just ridiculous and makes no sense. To add - the deserts were over £6 each. If I went to a Michelin star restaurant I would maybe anticipate that kind of price, but not at this pub even if it is a nice place to eat. They need to address this or they will lose customers as we will not be returning until they bring their prices back in line. Happy to pay a premium but it was just ridiculous.

Stayed 1 night as a last minute birthday getaway. Booked 2 rooms. Everything was perfect. The rooms, the hotel, the location (5 minute walk to Cathedral, river, city centre and attractions) and easy free parking. Even more than perfect was the best breakfast I have ever had and the most attentive, friendly, hard working and friendly staff. This hotel is a MUST when visiting Ely!

We booked this restaurant after looking at the website menu and prices and also reviews. The website is very misleading ,The menu is totally different when you get there and we weren’t the only ones complaining,we were told it is a sample menu online ? The prices were also different to the online prices, the steaks were £2 more and then when you pay for individual sides to go with it ,mushrooms, onion, chips etc, these were also £1 more than advertised online. It all added up to a very expensive steak meal.Again the management advised that it was a sample menu, disgusting. The furniture was dated and even the table and my chair were broken, the legs were loose.it wasn’t nice at all.We had a waiter Cameron ,who was really helpful given the amount of complaints he had to deal with regarding the menu. The steaks were ok but not worth the price we paid for them.We were also overcharged when checking the bill, but Cameron rectified this for me.Overall I would never have booked if I had known,I feel like tourists to the area are being taken advantage of by this establishment. So disappointed as it was our first meal out on our 7 day trip,Sorry but I would definitely not recommend especially if you are fancying something particular on the online menu, you won’t get it !

Visited with a friend for Sunday lunch. No menu online so was unsure of the price. £14 for a roast with either chicken, pork or beef. What arrived was 2 small and thin slices of pork (with fat on so even less meat ) 3 small potatoes, boiled cabbage, 1 piece of cauliflower (called cauliflower cheese on the menu?!) and some broccoli. Really disappointing for the price. I’m happy to pay £14 if a meal if it’s good size or good quality. This was not.. We decided to give puddings a miss.. £9 for the cheesecake and £8 for the apple crumble. Not sure where they are getting their prices from and we understand now why it was fairly empty inside.Would not recommend.

This was a good, first-time visit to The Royal Standard. It is a Greene King pub on the street leading directly to Ely centre. Ordered a couple of Punk IPA draught beers and a side of chunky chips. The chips were really quite nice and lightly covered in rock salt. All came in at a very reasonable price in decent, clean surroundings. The staff are conscious of abiding by COVID-19 measures which is good to see.

Tasty breakfast and attentive staff; this Inn has much to be proud of. Parking to the rear is convenient and is free in Cambridgeshire which made a nice change. Room decor was a little overstyled but en-suite appeared almost brand new with a capacious shower and enormous towels. Great location and well worth a visit.

From the outside, this is an old pub but inside the layout is very swish and modern. The staff were well organized and helpful and there is a nice outside seating area to the rear. The municipal carpark is directly behind the pub and you can actually enter from there.

So before we got to Ely we booked a table here as the menu and pictures looked great. Walking around we thought we’d pop in for a quick beer early and have a look around (thankfully we did). The “welcome” was non existent and although it was not busy and there was plenty if staff, nobody gave a damn. We were 20 seconds away from walking out when we finally got a drinks order taken. So we didn’t stay for another and cancelled our table for the evening. First impressions last unfortunately.

The place itself doesn’t look great but We shared a gorgeous mackerel fish cake with apple and beetroot and pea purée. The fillet steak I had was delicious as were the wild garlic mushrooms, side salad with a tarragon dressing. Dessert...small shortcake biscuits and lemon and lavender posset....beautiful and fresh to finish the meal. Not cheap but very good quality and really tasty food that the chef cared about making. Breakfasts here are also beautiful, homemade baked beans!really good quality Haddenham sausages and bacon. Massive choice of breakfast dishes, including 6oz steak and eggs! It looks like an average pub but the quality and care of the dishes is excellent. I’m very fussy about full English...sausages and bacon, ate the lot and even tried the black pudding! Never before! Also sea bream was gorgeous!

We stayed for one night in July. Room was very nicely decorated with a really good bathroom. Our only real complaint was that the room was very warm - there is a fan in the room but that doesn't really cool the room - no doubt it would be fine in the cooler months!Breakfast was included in the rate and it was really excellent quality - I was really pleasantly surprised! The team were really friendly and helpful... we had a bit of an issue with wifi but there was no problem as we were moved really really quickly with no question.
