The Royal Pub & Restaurant in Barnsley

I went last week with my Sister in law Was warmly greeted by a lovely lady who really couldn't have done any more for us. The tapas were delicious, so fresh and tasty. Can't wait to return. Thank you.

Superb tapas, had 6 between 2 people, large portions and all presented so nice, very tasty, enjoyable and good selection. Staff friendly. Would love to visit again and highly recommend to family and friends. Thank you.

We have been going to The Royal for years and always enjoyed our visits. Not anymore - this establishment has recently changed hands. There is a new menu that is neither one thing or the other! Tapas is still offered but much reduced choice and all seem to include chorizo! The quality of food is no where near as good as it used to be Can’t tell you how disappointed we are. We shall not be rushing back

Called in for drinks on Friday, been coming here for years and always enjoyed it great food, service etc but the whole place on Friday stank of cooking like a greasy spoon cafe and I popped in today also to pick up some food and again it was exactly the same, my clothes stunk after spending an hour there on Friday, it never used to smell like that would put me off coming again.

Arrived at 15:15 for Sunday dinner. Drinks order took but never came back to take food order. Had to ask to order and starters came 16:40. Mains arrived at 17:15 and had to keep asking to order more drinks. This pub has changed hands recently. The decor is now a bit tasteless in my opinion and the tables have lost their top coat of varnish and are now sticky and tacky. We regularly attend this restaurant for tapas but the new menu is now a lot smaller and portion sizes have followed. The meal on Sunday was nice (when it arrived) but not good enough to wait that long for. Portion sizes were small which was ok as we went in the discounted period of £14 for 3 courses. I’d be disappointed if I’d paid full price. Also a nightmare going to eat with children, who cannot understand how it took 2hrs to get their dinner! Pub wasn’t full, empty tables around us, so footfall couldn’t be blamed. Poor service I’m afraid, won’t be going back for lunch or tapas.

Not really sure what’s happened, we’ve been going for years and even held special birthdays there but something has changed. The menu is drastically reduced with nowhere near as much selection as there always was and some real favourites missing. We had a table for four and it was really quite cold in there. All of the staff are very young and not that attentive. We had to send back the cokes we ordered as they were just syrup. We were told there was a problem with the pump which is fair enough but then getting charged for pints of coke but only given two 200ml bottles each in replacement. Given it was already cold in there we were dismayed to receive stone cold plates to eat our hot food from. When the food came it was as delicious as it always is but there have definitely been some changes and not for the better. We won’t rush back and have taken The Royal off our “favourites” list which is a real shame for what used to be an absolute gem of a place.

This was our first visit and specifically went for tapas on Friday lunchtime. It was stunning!! Good portion sizes and the most authentic we’ve had outside Spain (and our friend had lived in Spain for 6 years so that’s saying something). The Chef/Patron was lovely and welcoming as was his partner. We will be back again soon.

Lots of changes since we last visited. It used to look like a country pub, I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like now. Some of what we ordered never turned up, we just told them to cancel it from the order. Some of the dishes don't resemble what they used to. A few too many changes a little too quickly and not all for the better. Ok but no longer our go to place for big celebrations.

Had the 3 course Sunday lunch, portion’s were small but that was fine with us as we don’t want huge portions, the food we got was very nice although the eton mess wasn’t an Eton mess just a bandy snap basket with ice cream but the service with really good , very good value for money with the offer that was included £14.95 for 3 courses

Food taste nice but the wait was ridiculous! Over 45 minutes and we'd not even had our starters, went and complained and was told it was because there was a big booking but we had the table booked for nearly a week Won't return

Booked online which was a very easy process. Upon arrival The Royal pub and restaurant we were greeted with a very warm welcome. We were seated in a very nice restaurant the very nice waitress took our drinks order and served them very quickly, a very nice Madri and Zinfandel. The Sunday menu as an excellent choice of meals. I ordered the Goats Cheese fritter for starter and believe me it was beautiful, for main it was the gammon two large thick cut slices of gammon cooked perfectly, the carrots and parsnips we superbly cooked along with a n excellent Yorkshire pudding. For dessert tried the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and it was lush. The overall service was outstanding and the price was very reasonable we would highly recommend a visit. I’m stuffed lol.

Really poor service After 20 mins of waiting without been asked for drinks went to bar and got them ourselves….. waited another 10 mins then went and asked if it’s table service…. Got told they would come over to take order…. Another 15 mins later they finally took our order….. After we ate the starter and main, they took our plates and never asked if we wanted more drinks or desert…. Waited 10 mins to see if they would come which they didn’t…. Decided to leave ….. Wasent overly busy aswell …..

You can tell they have changed owners, changed the taste of everything on the menu and it has been ruined. 100% will not be returning and I will make sure to tell friends and family the same!

Wow this place used to be the best food in Barnsley, and what a let down it was this evening. I under stand that it has been taken over but you can really tell and not for the better. Booked a table for 4 last Sunday. Superb traditional roast beef or lamb with all the extras including home cooked Yorkshire's. Hot plates, steaming food, unusual veg and delicious thick gravy. Great value too.

Called in the other night, Wednesday, and surprised how full it was for a Wednesday, I’ve been before so I know what to expect, food wise. It must have been talent night in Barnsley it was full with a lot of good looking Barnsley beauties, not that Barnsley doesn’t have plenty of beautiful women. The service was first class, we ordered 3 tapa and our waitress informed us it was 4 for 3 night so we ordered another plate, average cost £9 per dish, as an after thought I asked for a portion of French Fries £2.50, guess which one I got free, on the plus side the food was V. Good except the cod rissoles, bit mushy for my taste. Service was excellent bar service was friendly had a delightful G&T followed by a glass of house white. Pleasure to see a great pub so full and a credit to the area. Critically you can’t argue with a full house. My rating:Welcome 5/5 Food 4/5Atmosphere 4/5Price. 4/5

Wow! What do you have to do. To get into this bar restaurant. My advice, book early. It seems that tapas food is a very popular menu at the moment.After a few attempts booking on line. I rang, and got a booking. And this was to dine at 17:00 on a Wednesday. Tapas is my favourite food. And I enjoyed every mouthful. Please. Book early.

Beautiful tapas, we had all sorts and can’t complain about any, from paella, to lamb chops, chicken skewers, Belly pork, garlic mushrooms. The food was lovely. They bring it as and when it’s ready and we love that. Just to keep bubbling over a glass of gin. It was great until after our mains when we wanted dessert. We asked for a drink, didn’t get one, went to the bar and got our own. We asked for a dessert menu, didn’t get one, had to ask a different member of staff. We then sat with the dessert menu for 45 minutes, until our taxi arrived, so left without one. Table service was really poor, it was busy, but still poor service. Food though, gorgeous!

We popped in mid week for an early dinner. Pretty busy for a Tuesday night. Extensive tapas menu to suit all tastes. Food was very good, as was the service. Reasonable prices too.

I went to the Royal on Thursday for tapas with firends. The food was beautiful and very well priced for its quility! The waitresses were externally attentive, polite and knowledgeable, particually a girl called Lydia who was fantastic when catering for my partners dietary requirements! The other waitresses who I think were called Lizzy and Elinor were an absolute pleasure to chat to and are a credit to the restaurant! Overal, it was fantastic night, with a great atmosphere! We even joined in with the pub quiz in the end. Can’t wait to go back, highly recommended!!

On Saturday me and 4 friends came for our dinner, we knew it would be busy and would have to wait but we got there at 6 and asked how long we would be waiting for a table and was told an hour, we said that was fine however didn’t get sat down until 8:30, every time we asked staff how long we would be waiting they told us we were next to be seated but clearly this wasn’t true as many people came in and out. I am 8 months pregnant and was stood waiting for 2.5 hours and staff didn’t acknowledge us at all besides one staff member who asked me if I needed a chair after 2 hour. When we finally sat down my order was wrong, luckily our waiter was lovely (her name was Oliva) she was the same one who asked me if I needed a seat and she sorted out the order,Besides that the food was nice but if we knew how long we would be waiting we would’ve gone some where else, areound 7:30 we did ring other places to try go there for food but couldn’t get in anywhere, other staff besides Olivia were rude and not helpful at all.

Well the website says vegetarian friendly...that is not actually true. Visited 29th March with friends and after explaining that two of our party were vegetarian to a number of the staff we were told they would substitute some of the meat dishes for us, although we did get asked to sit together and when we explained would not be sat together we got a strange look. Whilst waiting for our vegetarian dishes I had to make do with eating the garnish from the other plates.

Visited with friends and from start to finish everything was lovely . This is some of the nicest tapas I have eaten ..,we ordered 13 dishes between 4 of us and there was more than enough Lovely atmosphere and attentive staff

Visited for Sunday Lunch with family. It was early so it wasn't busy but the Sunday roast dinner was lovely.

What a brilliant buzzing atmosphere with lovely staff and a brilliant choice of tapas and other food. I've tried the Tapas dishes a couple of times now and they are absolutely gorgeous, so tasty and varied. You will not be disappointed.

Came to celebrate a friends birthday in a party of 4. Staff were very quick to show us to our table even though the pub was busy. My hubby and his friend are both ale drinkers and were not disappointed with the great selection on offer.

Tapas are getting very popular and there are a lot of mediocre places around offering "tapas" but this place is by far the best around. Lovely, friendly staff too.

My latest visit to the Royal, once again a very nice evening, but a bit of a spoiler, once of our tapas dishes was Crab, now usually it very nice, but this time unfortunately I think the chef had doubled up on the salt, we mentioned this to the serving staff, and we received an apology, anyway that explains the 4 on this occasion.

The Royal is a great place to go as couples or with friends. The tapas dishes are delicious and we always end up eating too much! They also do a great selection of drinks including cocktails and the atmosphere is always great. Well worth a visit.

Truly authentic tapas that are delicious! Not cheap but reasonably priced as well. Very good selection of cocktails, good local beer and quality wines. Only disappointment is their deserts but to be honest we rarely have enough space anyway! Great atmosphere and live music on Sunday evenings

Our favourite place to visit for tapas every thing is always just perfect love trying all the different dishes always a great atmosphere it’s like been on holiday we love the cocktails and sangria jugs too staff are always friendly and very welcoming too will be back time and time again

We visited on a early Sunday evening having previously booked. We were seated on the front lounge, or music room as it’s known. We all ordered tapas , most of it was good but definitely not excellent! Three of us ordered crab and it came with large claws in the meat, but was advertised as dressed crab, off putting to all of us. The calamari came 15 mins after we had all finished the various courses!

Tapas and Sunday lunch are fab. Does not matter if i come with the girls, my husband or my husband and little boy. We always have a lovely time.

Had a fabulous afternoon here, our first visit. 4 couples on a Sunday afternoon. We ate inside, and all chose 3 different tapas each which came in dribs and drabs which we didn’t mind. The wine was lovely and everyone enjoyed their meals. Very very filling! There was a live singer on at the same time which I think they do every Sunday. There are plenty of staff....all brilliant, so it was easy to get served at the bar too. We were lucky to get a table outside afterwards in the beer garden for cocktails which has a nice atmosphere and really busy. Can’t fault anything really and would definitely recommend and re-visit.

Came on a Thursday (buy 3 get 1 free). I ordered meat paella (£5.50), gambas pil pil (£7), chicken skewers (£6) and my other half (who is vegetarian) had tortilla (£5), olives (£3.50), goats cheese (£7). We were happy with all our dishes.
