The Royal Oak Country Pub and Pantry in Chichester

Arrived late afternoon yesterday, just passing for a pint. Walked up to the bar only for the manager to ask if I was there for the wake? I said no and he told me to leave. Would have been made much easier if a sign had been put up to save any embarrassment.

I was lucky enough to have a surprise party thrown for me at The Royal Oak Midhurst and I have to share what a brilliant venue it is, with amazing staff that could not have done better. Efficient, attentive and friendly. Super atmosphere and great food. Perfect pub!

Lovely lunch today, great food, atmosphere service and value- plus it's very dog friendly. What's not to like?

I have just come back from The Royal Oak for my Mother’s Day lunch. The food was excellent. The staff were polite, attentive and very friendly. It made my Mother’s Day. I can’t recommend this pub enough for service, food and atmosphere.

Booked Sunday lunch, which was absolutely delicious!! Couldn't fault anything. The Yorkshire pudding was to die for!!!

We popped into this gorgeous gem of a pub today for a drink and asked on the off-chance if they could squeeze us in for a Sunday roast. Even though they were extremely busy, we were given a table with a smile. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was cosy and welcoming and the food was delicious. The menu was easy to follow and clearly indicated gluten free options. They even had a GF beer. We’ll definitely be back soon and would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Impromptu pit stop with friends today. What a treat. Helpful, welcoming staff and a lovely place to dine. Catering to dietary requirements and kept the three year old in our party entertained with colouring. Mussels were delicious as was the steak and burger. We had our desserts by the fire after lunch. Great portions, nice presentation, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and will be back. Thank you for such a lovely lunch.

Late decision to stop for food. Good variety of menu options and homemade dishes. Vegetable selection with the Steak and Ale Pie was impressive, the Venison Rigatoni was a delight to the taste buds. Ambience was charming and very clean, tidy and well cared for. An absolute delight and we will certainly be back in due course. Thank you. 👌😃👍

excellent pub located just outside midhurst, we've used as a family meeting spot for lovely lunch and drinks few times. food always excellent and great for kids, very accommodating and attentive service and one of favourite elements is the outdoor space they have which the kids enjoy using the pub garden as space to run, play etc. when they need fresh air break.

Spent a lovely New Year’s Day meal here, we had a few hiccups along the way as you do on the busiest day of the year. Dealt with very generously by the manager. We highly recommend.

The Royal Oak does a cracking good Sunday roast and more importantly while most places stop Sunday lunch service at 3 which is a tad irksome, the Royal Oak lets you enjoy Sunday at a leisurely pace.

All great, they fitted us in at very last moment. Great service, we were a bit shocked at 44 pound for 4 large glasses of wine, but great lunch , thank you.

Absolutely cannot fault our visit here. Service was attentive and lighthearted and the food was spectacularly good. We opted for the Christmas 3 course set menu, which was delicious, inventive and beautifully presented. Such a fun afternoon and great value. We will definitely be back!

We were fortunate to grab a last-minute table here for a sunday roast after a long day. What a lovely meal! Everything we had was cooked to perfection, 2 meat eaters and 1 vegetarian and all very satisfied! The atmosphere was fresh and inviting yet cosy, and the service was perfect! Highly recommended.

Nice place to visit, needs a better range of ales for me to return but food was tasty and arrived quickly.

Our first visit and we were pleasantly ly surprised. A buzzy atmosphere but not too noisy. The vegetarian Sunday roast was excellent, generous portions well cooked.

What an absolute gem of a place. Had an outstanding meal at The Royal Oak. Gorgeous cozy ambience in the bar and attentive service from the moment we arrived. Our food was fabulous - halloumi fries, meze platter, GF fish and chips (HUGE portion!) and the most amazing pork belly. Just a fab evening. Thanks so much guys

It helped that it was a lovely hot sunny day, but the venue is lovely, the old pub building is beautiful and the garden was a lovely place to sit out under the brolly. The beef burger was a proper meat pattie that made it one of the better burgers I've had at a pub... shame the chips were just sort of generic skinny fries... some chunky style chips would have been more in keeping with the excellent burger. Nice ice cold cider, good food and great weather made for a very pleasant experience ! Will visit again.

We ate in the marquee, really enjoyed the atmosphere. Food was lovely, service great, nothing was too much trouble.

Popped in for a drink at the weekend and was very impressed by the overall experience. The pub itself is in a great location near some beautiful countryside. The venue was well decorated and cool inside which is needed on a hot day like Saturday. They were hosting a wedding so obviously quite busy with that however this didn't stop very polite and profession service. I haven't had the pleasure of eating there yet however I will definitely be returning and recommend it to anyone, even just for a drink.

We had a big family gathering but we were well looked after. The lunch took a while to arrive but then there were 11 of us so probably not surprising! Food delicious.

The food here was absolutely delicious. My husband had the chicken Milanese and I had the duck. Perfectly done and very tasty. The atmosphere, varied seating options and space were all wonderful! We will certainly be back.

Went to a wedding reception in May 2023 and was very impressed with the service and food. Went back today for our anniversary as were not disappointed. Food and service was top class. Busy for a Tuesday but if you get it right people will want to come. Will be back for certain. The Royal Oak is a traditional inn beautifully presented in excellent surroundings. Go; you will be impressed.

A classic old English eatery and watering hole with some tasteful retro and modern elements. The menu however is bang up to date, with beautifully plate presentation, and as tasty as it looks. For a price only slightly above what an average pub lunch costs these days, you're getting outstanding locally sourced food freshly prepared to a very high standard. Definitely worth making a trip of!

We found this pub a while ago after a recommendation last year but when we went they had a wedding reception so no food to our disappointment, But we returned yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. On a beautiful sunny day we sat outside in the generous sized garden for a late Sunday afternoon lunch, I had fish and chips and my partner had rhe roast both were lovely presented and delicious, the halloumi fries we had as a starter were the best we had ever had. We went with friends and they had a roast and the burger and both were very impressed with the quality, size and value for money. Their children had the cheese and tomato pasta which again was very generous and nicely presented for the 6quid charged for it. The pub itself is beautiful and the staff are all very friendly and helpful, as we ordered some chunky chips which came out as skinny fries and when we said the waitress just said that's fine and changed them no questions asked. The service was quick aswell so all in all a very good meal out will defiantly be returning on many more occasions I am sure 👍

Outstanding food. Only pub restaurant I’ve ever been in where it is safe to order vegetarian food. Bean burger is worth a trip from London, in my opinion.

Lovely pub, I was visiting as part of a Land Rover owners meet, so I only had a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich (very nice!). Friendly staff, nice surroundings, big car park.

Wonderful pub dining experience...for dad's 80th....all mains delicious forgot to snap, they cater for allergies gluten and dairy free, most friendly and helpful hospitality lady from the Ukraine (sadly forgot her name😬) Shared a tasty cheeseboard with dad...Best one I've had in a while....daughters puds were lemon and raspberry roulade and vegan sticky pear pudding...both definite thumbs up, will certainly recommend and visit on a warmer day 🌞did I mention the wood burner...very cosy 😋

Fabulous food and dog friendly! As well as a few “pub staples” (such as fish and chips, burger and a pie) the rest of menu is focused on high quality British and European dishes. Very enjoyable!

Food is spectacular. Friendly service, a really caring attitude towards the comfort of their guests. Currently there is a heated marquee in the garden that makes for a great Christmas party venue.

Unfriendly owner. Bad energy and not a good role model for the rest of the staff - won’t be coming back to this pub

We would like to thank all the team at the Royal Oak for all their hard work producing and serving the most amazing tasty food, which was all delivered hot and beautifully presented to the tables, no mean feat when catering for 60 people sitting down to a three course wedding breakfast! The canapés were superb, the staff very friendly and attentive, they couldn’t do enough for us! There were so many compliments from all our guests . You truly made our daughter and son-in-laws wedding reception an amazing and memorable occasion, it could not have been more perfect and all in the most beautiful setting. Once again our thanks to you all. Alison & Peter.

Called in on the way back home from Goodwood Rivival "hoping" to get some food at 8pm....... Got an absolutely beautiful Sunday Roast Gravey 10/10 Roasters 10/10 Veg and meat still tasty and hot. Very nice place with friendly staff. I do believe it is dog friendly also. Happy Day's 😀 😜

Great food but the service was a bit slow and it wasn't very busy. The beer and wine is expensive.

The pub is situated outside of Midhurst town but is well worth the walk. Some seasons the tent outside turns from a summer open tent to a closed teepee with a fire. Also has a massive open space with tables and benches for the beer garden. Service is great staff are friendly. Menu has a range of different styles of food. After a few times of going throughout the year would like to see the menu change a little. Still recommend to go!

Good food. Polite staff. I visited on Sunday lunchtime and found it to be quite noisy from large groups, making conversation quite difficult.

Came for lunch on Saturday with my fiancé and grandmother. The staff all looked pretty young which can be a sign of trouble ahead (poorly managed & they ran off anyone with experience). However, our waitress was delightful & professional. The food was exceptional, and arrived in good time. My fiancé days his pint was excellent too. Overall, we were all very happy with our meals and would certainly come again. If you're looking for a country pub with great food that's a bit more exciting than the standard fare I would highly recommend.

We've been here twice now, both visits have had the same thing in common, extremely slow service. It's a fantastic location though, with a huge garden and the pub itself is a good place to relax, so a good place to slow down, but don't expect anything to be on time.

Feels like I walked in on misery hour, won't be going back. Very disappointed. Food was still coming out the kitchen but they were not prepared to do even a sandwich. I was in there bang on 2.30. Manager was even sitting there and she really did not care. Took my custom elsewhere. Finish a contract 5 minutes away on Friday and guess what, we will take our custom from our wrap meal elsewhere too. If you try for your customers, you'd be amazed about the return.

Good food & service, very friendly

Unfortunately we had a 'very average' meal. When the food arrived it came out tepid, salty and not as fresh as it could have been. We ended up leaving a large amount on our plates and left hungry. We expected a better standard of food from such a high quality establishment.

Nicest pub food in a 15 mile radius - we’ve tried them all. Lovely inside / outside seating year round in a stylish tent or outside picnic style tables with beautiful views of the South Downs. Also on the route to goodwood. This is the place to go.

Parking off a busy road can be tricky, good variety of beers etc, cheerful staff. Size of bowl/plate of chips is disappointing.

The food was great the waitress also very pleasant (when present)! However we went for a meal on Mother’s Day a table of 10 5 adults and 5 children aged from 8 months to 10 years old. When booking we made it clear that we would have our children and asked for a table maybe our the way (so we wouldn’t disturb others) for anyone that has eaten here we were at the table secluded to the left as you walk in. About 45 minutes after we arrived the kids had eaten and we were all eating so the kids were getting bored so decided to play with each other, a women who I presume was the manger of sort approached us with what I can only describe as a face like a slapped *** telling (not asking) that are kids need to be quiet or take them outside. Now I agree the 2 year old may have been having a tantrum (always uncomfortable enough in public) but to be spoken to in the manor she did made me feel really unwelcome. So after dwelling on it for a minute I approached her and explained I didn’t appreciate the way she delivered the complaint and that her customer service was poor on this front, her reply with the same face as mentioned above “sorry if you feel that way” , I reminded her that this I presume is a child friendly environment as you have children menus etc to which she told me to stop raising my voice! Unless the one Amstel I had went to my head, I was polite and simply making her aware she had made us fell uncomfortable. After returning to my table without any reassurance that it was a request to keep our children quite and not a demand no waitress/waiter attended our table for a good 30 minutes to take an order so we were left to wait whilst trying to keep our children quite feeling very uncomfortable! I’d really have loved to give a better review but this singular person completely ruined our afternoon

Good food, friendly service, large car park.

This is such a lovely pub, it's great to have The Royal Oak so local to us. The food is always great and the atmosphere is superb. A real comfortable and welcoming place. The biggest asset has to be the waiting staff. They are always friendly and chatty and really helpful. Our daughter is included in the chat with them which impresses us because so many pubs have staff who do not interact.
