Had a fantastic meal here on our way back from a short break in Whitby. We opted to share a Gatsby so we still had room to try the South African dessert and I have to say the food was fantastic, we absolutely loved it. The staff were very welcoming and attentive and the owner even came over to chat to us for a bit too and make sure everything was OK. It was so good, we are now trying to plan another trip to the area mostly so we can visit the pub again and try a few more of the South African dishes!

Vacationing from U.S. and excited to have senior course lunch we saw online before visiting Castle Howard. Both age 62 and told we couldn’t order senior lunch unless we were 65. Dozens of people came in after who announced they were excited to be 60 and could get senior lunch; which they were all allowed to do. Really disappointed as that course lunch looked way better than my burger…

Hadn't booked but made to feel so welcome. The service was absolutely excellent. We ordered with Jamie, think that's who ! He said he'd been there for a week. He was so nice and friendly but not too much. He seemed to cope with the pressure and the workload too. The food was amazing! Well cooked and presented. Swift delivery and swift clearing of the table. The place seemed to get very busy quickly but that didn't seem to delay any food for the other patrons. It appeared there were quite a lot of regulars which says it all. Absolutely faultless. We'd been here on holiday from Lancashire and just wish we had a lovely ,more local place like this. Thank you. Marvellous!

This is a great pub with an innovative menu, with some dishes having a South African twist: all delicious. The menu has vegetarian options and has a non-alcoholic beer option on draft (which is great and unusual for the area). The pub itself has a beautiful garden and a cosy fire in winter. The pub also allows dogs. I cannot recommend this pub more highly. The landlord is always sunny and bright and really cares about his customers. You’ll feel at home here.

Was early for an appointment and past this pub and decided to call in for a drink . We were greeted straight away and made to feel very welcome . We ordered drinks from a charming guy behind the bar and the owner told us about the seating area outside which is what we opted for. A small marquee is in the garden if weather isn’t so good and there’s is a beautiful garden and hanging baskets .. the smell of food was too much to resist and we ordered lunch ..scampi and chips and an egg mayonnaise sandwich with a side salad . Both were lovely .. The pub itself is charming , Olde Worlde with low ceilings and really quaint. Would definitely recommend for a lovely meal and friendly welcome… oh and dog friendly Def 5*

We chose to eat here after reading the reviews. We had the roast beef. The beef was overcooked and chewy, mash potatoes were tasteless Yorkshire pudding was OK, vegetables tasteless and barely cooked, the gravy was like thin brown water and again tasteless. However the 3 small roast potatoes were very tasty indeed.£13.50 was an awfully high price for such a very low standard meal.

Arranged to eat here during the Covid crisis so we were given the choice on arriving of in the marquee or in the sunshine so we chose the latter. The starter I chose was prawns with their shells which was acceptable although I did think they were shrimps as they were so small and they still had an awful lot of their eggs clinging to them which wouldn't be everyone's choice. My friend's pate with chutney was delicious. As it was Sunday we chose a beef and pork roast with vegetables. This was really good as it was presented with plenty of fresh vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and extra gravy plus sauces appropriate to our meat choice. The dessert menu looked good but we resisted the temptation! The Sauvignon blanc we drank with the meal was really good and not the tasteless white wine which you often get offered so this was a bonus. The staff were polite, pleasant and efficient, keen to act within the current Covid guidelines so really I have decided to go back with another friend as I enjoyed it so much - at a reasonable price as well!

My partner and I decided to finally go out for a meal, but still choose to stay local! We had heard that there was a new menu and chef, so a visit was a must. The meal was sensational my partner had the prawns , presentation was superb, but then the combination of flavours was perfect. I had the homemade fish cakes and the same presentation was lovely served with leeks perfect.I had the fish duo for main which consisted of sea bream and sea bass. Served on coconut rice and local fresh green veg. Again the fish was cooked to perfection and the tastes gelled perfect and was beautifully different. My partner decided to have fish combo. I was pleased he did, it was amazing again in every way. ( Don’t order it unless your hungry ).The wines had been changed also. I came out of my comfort white zone and had the Pinot rose, Very surprisingly fruity and dry, served very cold, just as I like it, My partner had the ales which he also totally enjoyed! In all excellent evening and a total bonus to have on our doorstep. The followed all the recent safety regulations, and made sure others did too, felt a lovely comfortable environment. Certainly will be going back!

Absolutely fantastic food (I had bunny chow with salmon and mussels, others had a burger, sea bass and half a chicken which he said was the best chicken he had ever eaten and he's not a one to offer praise readily!) We drove past and saw ‘dog friendly’ which was enough for us to stop. We were met by the landlord who was very friendly and took us through the C19 procedures efficiently and without ‘overkill’. We were offered a choice of tables. The roaring fire was welcoming as was the choice of decent beers. The food menu was good - the Bunny Chow (not a bunny thankfully) was delicious and made a change from the usual pub fayre. The C19 was very good but not at all intrusive and made the pub feel ‘normal’. The landlady was really nice and had a chat with us. Toilets were immaculate. We had three dogs and this was no problem. A fantastic experience and the best we’ve had since March. Highly recommended, thank you. If we lived closer, I’d move in!

We came here for dinner - it was during the Eat Out to Help Out scheme. We were happy and confident with the restaurant's CV-19 procedures. You ring the doorbell on arrival and wait for someone to come get you. We were taken to the bar where we ordered our drinks and meal.We headed outside where all the other guests were, and we stayed at our table until we were finished. It was quiet and the other guests looked like they were on to desserts, or finishing up. There were five other tables besides ours.Despite this our order took 30 minutes to come out, now 8.30pm, and unfortunately the steak was terrible. It was chewy, and it had to be cut into small pieces to manage it. I didn't eat it all, and let the waitress know that the steak was terrible and chewy. The chips were nice. She didn't know what to say, and told me 'I'm glad the chips were ok'. She brought us the bill because we decline dessert. I was extremely annoyed when I heard her telling another customer (after we had paid) that she had removed the steak from their bill!!! It clearly wasn't just our steak that was terrible, it was not worth the £18 it is charged at even if we did get a discount. The owners were friendly as were the staff, and the garden was a nice space to eat but I would not recommend this place in a town that claims to be the food capital of North Yorkshire, there are lots of other places that can manage an edible steak.

Hard to top this place. We had a lovely day out at Eden Camp - and could probably have spent most of our holiday there! We looked online for a place for dinner afterwards - and the Royal Oak popped up.What a delightful and friendly place. The welcome all guests received was like visiting one of the family, and that was including the welcome for our dog, who the host kindly gave a treat to when we arrived :-)Dinner was just lovely - really nicely spaced-out tables, so the feeling was snug and cosy, yet tables were far apart so you had plenty of space, but not too-far apart, so the place kept its nice feeling with "hubbub" noise rather than music - which is in my mind always the tell-tale sign of a lovely place. The bill for 6 of us was reasonable at just over £100 including drinks - but the food quality was really lovely, and so despite it being a lot, it felt like good value. There's plenty of free parking nearby, and such a scrupulously clean place!! Hand sanitiser on arrival, and everything was spotless - although it looks like it was probably spotless already - even before the Pandemic! What else - oh yes! There's GREAT choice for vegetarians, (half our party are vegetarians), which is a rarity in Yorkshire, and made the visit even better :-)If you are looking for a memorable treat-dinner, then this is a great place to go, and I completely recommend it!

We turned up at 11.55, and our table was booked for 12pm. We rang the door bell as we were instructed and were told that they were not ready for us and the front door was then closed. When we got in we were not shown to the table and told that we were on the large table in the window. (Not a Great Start.) They brought the Menus to the table and took our drinks order, all was going ok. Until the food arrived!!! We ordered A chicken Salad and a Salmon salad, Fish and Chips and two children's Meals, and the Small scampi. The Fish and chips and the kids meals were ok , but I have to say the Salads were in a small type breakfast bowl and were in excess of £12. He felt this was acceptable but quite clearly he does not eat out a lot and is unaware of what other pubs and restaurants are serving in the area. He then went on to say that a lot of OAP's eat at the Pub and he has had no complaints. Well know you Customers!!! OAP's might be happy with the portion size but we were certainly not and we will never be visiting again which is a shame but there are better places in the town. My advise to the owners is to visit some of them and may be have a re think on what they are doing with the food and may be brush up on their hospitality skills which again were very poor. Finally they knocked the the price of the two salads off the bill which was the right thing for them to do but that will not make me want to ever return. .

Poor customer relationship, poor attention to food management, poor treatment of genuine customer complaints. Apparently, according to management OAP’s who regularly visit, are happy to pay £12.95 for a sparrows meal. For someone who has been in catering for 30 years, he has certainly a lot to learn from the competition in the area and far beyond! Hopefully they will not learn and new landlords will be in soon!

Looked like a decent range of beers that sadly, I couldn't sample as I was driving but maybe next time. Very friendly service impressed both my partner and I. We have been visiting the North Yorks Moors and were looking for somewhere to meet family for lunch on New Year’s Day. In addition to finding somewhere open and serving food, we also had to find somewhere that would let us bring our dog, as our holiday cottage did not allow us to leave him unattended. The Royal Oak Pub & Kitchen not only fit the brief, it provided a warm welcome and tasty food. We were greeted with a smile and put in the “Dog House”, a dining area where our dog could settle under the table. He was fussed over by staff and definitely appreciated the treats. Although we were the first customers seated, the area quickly filled up. The pub is quite snug, so I would advise booking a table.Between us, we had the fish and chips, the vegetarian burger and the Bunny Chow, a South African specialty. This is a lovely little pub just a mile or so outside Malton, it’s quant, attractive, nicely decorated, warm, clean and cosy. A really nice find. The owner and staff are incredibly, incredibly welcoming and fun, some great cask ales behind the bar and some really nice coffee from a really proper machine. If I had gone for a weekday lunch I would have given 4 stars, I had homemade burger which was really nice and definitely homemade, although would probably go for a softer bun. The other meals were also nice, what you would expect from a good lunchtime cafe. The prices at £7 - £9 are incredibly good value - probably too good - with a little work on presentations and garnish i think worth far more. The reason for 3 is that we went on a Saturday evening. The problem with this is that by the time you have sorted out baby sitters, taxi etc and headed out for a rare night out to a destination place like this (i.e. not in the centre of the town), I think you need something a bit more in terms of the menu, I don’t think they have got the evening offer here right especially with so many gastro pubs around to choose from. As I result, I think there was only 2 other diners so atmosphere was a bit flat for a Saturday night and we were gone at 9.45. As I say, great place, welcoming and friendly staff, but just not got the offer right as a place to travel out to on a winter evening and the place is not maximising it’s income potential as the menu and prices do not match the venue. If the owner reads this, please don’t take this as a negative, we had a nice time and really like the pub, hope this helps you as I think you have got most of it right. Perhaps try dinner at the grapes at Slingsby as a comparison as I we had tried to go there this night but they were full and I think this is the kind of evening offer you need especially in Malton as the food capital.

Dropped in here recently. Very decent pub grub. Well kept beers and a very warm welcome. Everything a pub should offer. Had a good value burger and a steak sandwich and a couple of pints. Landlord was very welcoming and engaging. Worth dropping in if you're in the area.

We came here last week for a family celebration. We received a very warm reception and the owners were extremely pleasant. Our meal was of good quality, although the tomato soup was more of a vegetable soup, rather than tomato. The main meals were good, but the crumble rather disappointing.

Our friends took us here for lunch because they came last week and loved it and we now love it too. We had the 3 course pensioners lunch at £8.00. I had soup the 4oz steak chips with garden peas and finished with the apple and cinnamon crumble with custard. The food was excellent, beautifully presented and good value. The restaurant is spotless with local pictures on the walls. The couple running the pub were friendly and very welcoming. Definitely recommend and cannot wait to come again.

A lovely cosy well appointed pub/restaurant. Easy parking, dog friendly, and very friendly and obliging hosts. We met a friend for lunch, after travelling a few hours to reach our meet up, it was lovely to find open fires and a friendly atmosphere. The hubby's Shepherds Pie, was particularly tasty, the two fish dishes also excellent, and my jam roly poly was lovely.

We only dropped in for a drink but ended up staying for a meal as we loved the place so much - this is the kind of pub that seems to have become very rare - cosy, friendly, warm (so many pubs seem really cold), well decorated, plenty of tables for those who only want a drink but with excellent food at an amazing price! It was Fish Friday so we both had the fish and chips for £7!!! It came extremely quickly, was beautifully presented and was absolutely delicious! I could have eaten a bowl of the crushed peas just on their own! The staff are the friendliest you will ever meet and nothing was too much trouble. There is only one problem with this pub - it's half an hour from where we live, otherwise I think we would be in every night

Two business acquaintances joined me for a working lunch at this excellent pub and kitchen. A warm welcome, good fun with the staff, excellent food and as good as it gets for a business lunch. Highly recommend and I have marked on favourites to call again. I’m not sure about the implications of the senior citizens menu being provided, but I forgive

Called in for lunch on our way to Camp Eden and we are glad that we did. It is a proper pub, comfortable and traditional inside with a lovely beer garden at the rear. We had ham sandwiches with large glasses of wine and everything was spot on. Landlord Steve and his wife Amanda could not have been nicer - they were genuinely pleasant and hospitable. Wish we lived nearer but we will certainly pay a return visit when we are next in Malton.

Visited Castle Howard and stopped off for Lunch. Bar person very personable and helpful. The food was excellent especially the lunch special I had, which was the Steak Pie. My cousin had the pate which she enjoyed. A bonus was the Theakstons bitter on tap.

The pub is traditional and the staff were friendly and welcoming. We ordered starters and a main course. The starter was tasty and nicely presented. However the main of scampi and chips was not as good. The chips were supposed to be "hand cut" but were not. They were tasteless and not well cooked. It was a shame because otherwise we enjoyed our visit.

Last visited this pub 32yrs ago and it has changed considerably from a little bar just inside the door on the right with an eating area at the back it now has a small bar at the back and a larger eating area where the bar used to be it was fully booked although most of the tables were unoccupied we decided to eat out in the beer garden where there were plenty of table we ordered scampi and chips and peas and our grand daughter ordered chicken nuggets chips and peas the food was of good quality although the nuggets were more chicken fillets so were a little too much for her but the chips and peas went down a treat as did our scampi and chips etc the meal was reasonably priced and served quite quickly staff were pleasant and helpful and attentive i would recommend this pub to visitors to the area last time we visited we both ended up being roped into playing darts for the pub team but there was no dartboard to be seen this time sadly

Delicious dinner, generous portions at a great price. Nice selection of Gins and Beer. Lovely Beer Garden in back and the only Ladies Room with real hand towels! Relaxed and comfortable country decor with friendly staff. Ample parking but if not, park across the road, there’s a public park there with no charge for parking. Try the Rhubarb and Ginger Gin with Sausages and Mash, followed by sticky toffee pudding. We ate around 6pm on a Saturday evening. If you are staying in York and have a car, a nice day trip is Castle Howard, followed by a short drive over to the Lavender Fields and then on to Malton for dinner. Malton is an authentic Yorkshire farming town with a livestock market on a Friday. The drive back to York is about 40 minutes and capping the day off at the Royal Oak was perfection.

This is the most amazing pub meal we have had anywhere, for a very long time. Very warm welcome from the new team who not only seem to enjoy the meals they offer, but see food as a passion. The starter was so good, I ordered a second one ... Efficient service, without being rushed. We've already booked to go back there! Even those of the party who had (delicious) sausage and mash, were offered a spoon for the gravy (not declined)!! Very pretty garden at the back and advertise as 'Dog Friendly'. A place I would highly recommend for all the family.
