When we booked we hadn't realised new owners had taken over. They were welcoming, very friendly but the food so disappointing. They had limited menu because it was their first weekend; fair enough. A choice of roast chicken or roast beef. But we left half our food still on our plates. Frozen vegetables (peas, sweetcorn and baby carrots), frozen roast potatoes (although when asked if they were Aunt Bessie's, they said they were home made - I can't believe it!) and beef as tough as old boots. A pudding was included in the price of the meal but we didn't stay. We have been regulars at the Royal Oak for 10 years+ - always loved the fresh vegetables, generous portions and fabulous home cooked pub lunches. But as our kids said, their school lunches were better than this.

Our first visit was a Sunday and I had a delicious sea bass meal, thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn't mind waiting as we knew it was freshly cooked. However when we went on a Saturday evening, early, there was nothing available on the vegetation menu - so why display it - not even veggie sausages. Disappointing - the staff were obviously bored, not welcoming.

After booking a table days before and confirming our booking the day before 12 of us arrived at 12 pm. First ones in. Sat down had a drink then ordered our lunch which all but one had the Sunday roast and pudding. The beef was like shoe leather...tough..and the pork was stringy plus the meat, potatoes and Yorkshire pud was drowned in gravy and cold. The veg was lovely. We finished eating our mains at 1.30 ish and had to request someone to come and take our order for dessert after waiting an hour and some. Then had a long wait again for the puddings to arrive. The wait was really ridiculous and if it wasn't for the wonderful company we would of walked out. We left soon after eating the pudding which was 3.30pm. This is the first time I've ever had to sit for so long waiting for food. It will also be my last. On a plus note we had one lady who did not eat carbs and the pub was very accommodating to her needs.

Beware Absolutely appalling!!!! Very rude landlord and staff all bar one! Landlord was very unprofessional when he came into restaurant shouting at us because a few from our party couldn't make it but only let us know when we where there! He proceeded to say you should have phone even though as soon as we knew we told the nice member of staff that we have a few people that wouldn't be able to make it to which she replayed not a problem! We as a party of 18 including children have never felt so belittled and discussed with bad customer service! If the pub ever changes hands then we would consider using it again but until then never!!! As for one waitress she was very rude as well must be following landlord, but the other member of staff asked me what the problem was and apologised on behalf of landlord although we feel he should have made the apologies and the rude waitress!!!! The pub has a lovely garden which was being mowed while the children where trying to play not the best idea as stones can fly up out of mower and there appeared to be bricks left by children's play area which one of our children hurt themselves on! So all in all not happy at all We would avoid.

Decide to visit again, after 2 months, The Royal Oak for lunch last Tuesday with a colleague for some Fish and Chips .... We had a very warm welcome from the staff and in particular from the publican John who is always attentive to please the visitors by providing his very knowledgeable and helpful advice among the choice of his large display of Ale, Lager and cider...The 'Fish and Chips' we ordered arrived promptly, in a HOT plate (not always the cas generally in pubs..!!) with plenty of peas and a very well and properly cooked chips...Despite John obviously busy on the back of the Pub, He had taken the time to have a very friendly chat with us.which was very nice and appreciated...This constant, lovely and genuine friendly attitude from 'John' the Landlord seems to be in his DNA ... and a lots,of publicans need to get inspired....I was so impressed that a returned the following Friday with an half dozen of friends and colleagues for some 'Drinks and Chips' and it was absolutely fabulous again....and we all decided that the Royal Oak will be from now on, our Friday evening venue...Thank you to you John and your very pleasant team...

I’ve lost count of how many times I have eaten at the Royal Oak and I have never been disappointed. Everything on the menu is hand made in the kitchen and it shows. The food is of a very high standard, with fantastic choices and plenty for vegetarians, which I am not, but quite often choose for a change (The best macaroni cheese I’ve ever tasted) and on my last visit with friends (one of whom is a vegetarian) I had the jam roly poly which is made from vegetable suet as we made a point of asking. If you have to wait a while for food it’s because it’s all freshly cooked to a very high standard which definitely makes the wait worth it. John his family and staff work very hard making the pub welcoming and homely. I love this pub because the food really is excellent. Top marks from me. I will be back again & again & again.

Not the easiest place to find but make the effort. Dating back to 1860 or so the original building stands with additions. Inside, it does not have the best décor BUT it is a proper pub unlike so many that have tried to go upmarket. The menu is varied and the wine list is good. After several visits, I can only praise the food cooked fresh and it is wonderful, best chips for ages, pies to die for, fish that was perfect and tender steak. Staff are friendly and good humoured. Overall, an excellent time had by all.

Only visited as it was half way between two couples. Initial impression not too good, as outside could do with painting, and tidying up car park areas etc. Inside also slightly battered but tables fine. The two young ladies running it were really nice, and very friendly. As a sign says, it is home cooked food not fast food! I had plaice, which was very good, two had roast pork and said that was good too, and one chili was fine. Fresh vegetables, good portions. Prices very fair, and 4 good meals were enjoyed, with very nice service. One gets the impression that the pub is struggling a bit (in fact, one notice inside admits that it is), but the food and service were just fine., and would have been perfectly acceptable in posher surroundings.

We have been there several times and the food is always excellent value for money, though the prices are creeping up. It has a large car park and is in a pleasantly quiet location with an old-world atmosphere; a complete absence of glitz! Mine host is could do with a course in charm - he is gruff to the point of being faintly offensive. Forget a warm welcome - we had to ask where our reserved table was and then ask for menus. He was deep in conversation with a friend and clearly reluctant to tear himself away to attend to customers! Some people think this adds to the old world charm - we found it irritating and off-putting. Later on he became much more friendly, but the poor impression was hard to erase.

It was a lovely and rare hot summers day and a cold drink and a spot of lunch in a nice pub was the order of the day. We ended up at the Royal Oak as our target destination (another review to be written) had decided to close the Kitchens at 1345 as they were having a quiet day. The pub was still really busy and though they were approaching the time for no more food orders, they were happy to take ours. They have a great choice of freshly cooked menu items. I opted for fresh cod ( and it was very fresh) and took the cold beer to sit in the sunny, and well kept garden. The meal and service was great and very reasonable. I usually lunch at The Royal Oak, when visiting my father, who lives nearby and eats there every day. we used to frequent the nearby Mill, but after a very poor experience am destined to come here instead. The interior is an uneasy mix of 'old worldly' and 'not quite finished' but at least it is not dominated with screens and blaring music. A pleasant place to eat. The menu is surprisingly lunch and although I have had the liver and bacon and ham egg and chips which are clearly all freshly produced, i do wonder whether how the more sophisticated dishes can be conjured.Anyway, this being a hot summer's day we both chose chicken and pesto tagliatelle with garlic bread (plus a pint of London Pride and a glass of Merlot) and went out into the surprisingly pleasant garden to await our fate. To be honest i would not normally order pasta when out but as it turned out it was a brilliant choice in the hot sun and it was beautifully made. Moist all the way through without any dryness. Even the garlic bread was very good.

Wow where to start with this pub I fear this may be a long review so apologies in advance. firstly if you like generic commercially run pubs like weatherspoons then this is not for you. This has personality and character and is a proper English traditional pub .After trying all of the pubs in the local area never have we been so walmly welcomed from the moment we stepped in. The pub has as much charm and charisma as the barman (Keld) who serves every person with relentless enthusiasm. PREMISIS: an old pub with low beams, Filled with traditional nick-nacs which beg to be explored, outside is a large contained garden suited for both kids and adults. After years of restaurant management I can truly say it is spotless and well maintained. FOOD: it is not a fine gastro pub nor a cheap chain serving frozen food, it just seems to be honest, home made and well priced. we ordered the baked Camembert stuffed with garlic and rosemary served with an assortment of interesting breads. We then had the pork belly which is a review in its own, a well thought out dish. A generous pork belly which had been slow cooked till tender and placed on cheese mash surrounded by a cider just on top was a circle slice of apple that had been lightly battered and fried, and worked very well. balancing on top was a long strip of cracking the whole thing was perfectly seasoned and none of the flavours overpowering. it's hard to make pork belly elegant but there it was. The portion ensured we couldn't leave the pub for a fair few hours and were happy to be stuck there and will make sure we are stuck there as often as we can. Come and join us for a pint in our new local Dane and Emma

The six of us had enjoyed the quiz night as an excuse to meet up for a few cheeky beers and despite the poor customer service we mainly had good evenings. Tonight just confirmed what we feared, the usual quiz host was ousted and the place was like a ghost town, the regular crowds have gone and I am sure the taking were a fraction of what they would have normally been. The Oak needs a real shake up to sort out a boring and dated menu, get staff that are pleased to help or enough staff so that they are not rushed and don't do short sighted things that upset your regulars.

let me start by saying this on full place will never be visited again by any of my family or friend's . the owner and stuff are rude and unapologetic. My family had a meal for a birthday celebration and were subjected to disastrous service and an attitude the likes of which you would not believe. After complaining about the late food we were shocked at the loud shouting response from the kitchen. The owner and his staff shouted 'do you want it or not ' before justifying the delay by saying how stressed they were and busy and we should understand. My wife pointed out she was just recovering from cancer treatment and did not need the abuse, the owner responded I don't need this either!!. Any response to this trying to say otherwise or justify the way we're treated will be pure lies and the sign of a desperate inept rude landlord who should never be front of house! We do not complain often and this is only our 2nd bad review. We are not local and have no personal connection good or bad with the establishment. To be fair the food was good.

Having visited the royal oak only a handful of times for drinks we thought we would try out some food one sunny Sunday afternoon due to the extensive garden. Having ordered a simple meal of chicken burgers we went and sat in the sun and waited and waited...and waited...finally an hr and half later having had to chase our meals up twice it finally arrived. At a glance the meal looked reasonable but a couple of bites into the burger and it soon became apparent it was far from ok...it was severely under cooked and im not talking a little on the pink side! The centre was pure jelly...it looked as though it had just come off the supermarket shelf. Obviously mortified and with valid reasons for concerns over food poisoning the meal was taken back to the bar...the response was even more shocking than the piece of salmonella that had been served to us..a mere shrug and 'we're only human and make mistakes' did little to pacify the worry that was now turning to anger. Eventually, a begrudging apology was recieved. We at this point decided to leave and made our way to the car park where we were followed by 3 members of staff who proceeded to write down our number plate and accuse us of not paying....it was at this point I can say I saw red...retrieved my receipt as proof and let well and truly rip...it really put a spoiler on our weekend. I understand the pub over the years has been in financial jeopardy and it is very clear as to why. STAY AWAY.

We always have lovely food here and consider it good value. As everything seems to be home cooked the food can take a little while to arrive, (in comparison with the pubs that microwave everything from the freezer!) but we always plan for this and if it's an ok day the kids can have fun playing in the lovely garden. If we've taken guests here they've always commented on it being a rare "proper pub" and how nice the food is too.

This place really is a victim of its own success although it could also be benefiting from the problems at the nearby Mill Tavern. Having heard about its supposedly excellent Sunday lunches, my wife and I paid a visit. This was during August when we still had a summer.Upon entering we found a place in chaos. It was bursting at the seems and this chaos was caused in part by the lack of staff control. The people working the bar frequently deserted their posts to take out food with the result that there was extreme congestion at the bar as people waited to order both drinks and food. Because the staff kept vanishing they had no idea, when they returned, of who to serve first and this created a hostile atmosphere with queue jumping etc.Being Summer it was possible to eat outside which was just as well as there was no room inside. I can imagine there being a lot of unhappy people during the Autumn and Winter when outside eating is not possible.I ordered the Sunday roast which arrived without a Yorkshire pudding. I'd seen others that had them so they had clearly run out and just not bothered to do anything about it. I was so hungry when it arrived that I ate without complaint but the meat was almost cold and was being kept warm purely by the gravy. It was far too expensive for what it was and the menu was confusing as the ones you can pick up are the weekday ones and you are expected to know to look on the boards on the wall for what is available on Sundays. In short, they cannot handle the numbers they get. If they had half the customers they would manage better. Currently the competition is non-existent or poor so they have no incentive to improve.Avoid for the time being until they sort themselves out.

Having seen on their website that they have won several awards for their food, though, I decided we should give it a go, and we were so glad we did. The inside is divided into a very nice dining area and, up a few steps, a pleasantly old-fashioned bar area; there is a large garden, with a play-area for kids, at the back, although that didn't appeal greatly on a soggy November day! There is a fairly extensive 'standard' menu, plus a blackboard crammed full of specials, both based on local produce; unusually for a pub, there is also a decent choice of appealing-looking vegetarian options - it's really not difficult, so why don't more pubs do this? We had a couple of tasty and extremely generously-filled baguettes - so generously filled that I couldn't finish mine - which were reasonably priced at around £5-£6 each. The beer was apparently very good, too, although I can't tell you at first-hand as I was driving and so had to stick to soft drinks. The landlord was as welcoming and helpful as anyone could ask.Given all the above, it's not surprising that the place was fairly busy: I would imagine that advance booking is needed at busy times, although we found a spare table with no difficulty on a Saturday lunchtime. It's a shame this place is well out of my usual way, as I would be very pleased to go back at any time.

I visit this pub every other month and I really love the landlord, he is a real character. I am getting really fed up of the menu though, it seems to have been the same for at least two years apart from there is less choice. The pub needs a bit of energy put into the place, this pub is in a great location to serve the local community, it has a fantastic garden space and has a lovely old feel to the bar area but it needs a facelift and remarketing to get people going there. I visited on a Friday night and it was very quiet, act before its too late please we don't want to loose another pub! I think it is a bit overpriced too.

My family brought me here for Mothers Day. There were 12 of us and the pub was packed, but the service was brilliant. The staff were friendly and good fun and the food was fantastic, top restaurant quality. The menu was limited, but there was still a good choice and despite it being so busy, the service was very quick. We will most certainly be back!

Used to be an alright pub back in the day.. Now it's an over priced pub/restaurant. Had to wait 10 mins at the bar for service on a Friday afternoon. When I say service I mean for someone to actually appear behind the bar.

Went to the Royal Oak for the first time last week, we really enjoyed it & the landlord is a great character & very helpful with our elderly Mum who couldn't make up her mind what to have, the food was very good, apparently the meat comes from a butchers in Grayshott which is renown for being a great butchers. We enjoyed it so much we are going back tonight

I only popped in on the of chance and ended up spending hours!.This is a really lovely traditional English pub, with everything you could possibly want.Friendly staff, a roaring fire, great food and a good selection of wines and beers, all at competitive prices. Plus its extremely family friendly with a lovely garden with swing sets and loads of space for kids to have a play and run around.I can not recommend it highly enough, and have since been back numerous times both with the family and with the girls to enjoy the ambiance a few glasses of Merlot.

Really don't understand how this pub won a best eatery award. Food took forever to come - seriously long time even for "fresh cooked" which I doubt as all I heard was the constant "ping" of a microwave going off. My starter was pipping hot on the edge but stone cold inside. My chilli and nacho chips was better, but certainly nothing to write home about and tbh I can make better in my own kitchen - without the microwave. Dessert was a joke. Shop bought cake with tin cream (I know as I had an identical slice of cake from Waitrose a few days before). Oh and the server was a cross, glum chap who had stains all down the front of his trousers. Enough said - AVOID!

New operator is trying to make a go of it - staff friendly and work hard. Decor needs an update. Food is OK, could be better. Wine limited, again could be better. Could be good destination place, plenty of parking space.

I have eaten here in the past and found it ok, so returned for a birthday dinner. The other party's food was "okay", but tinned spray cream on a banoffi pie was not what you'd expect for £5.50.My starter of cheesy garlic bread came without cheese, the owner admitted he'd forgotten to write it down. When they added the cheese the edges of the bread were burnt. My main of sirloin steak cooked medium had me wondering how it had been cooked. Grilled, fryed? I really don't know, but just before it came out I heard a microwave ping (we were the only diners receiving food at this time), and I windered, could it be microwaved? Was very rubbery. Chips were crisp buthard on the inside. I had asked for peppercorn sauce, it didn't come. Owner admitted he'd forgotten to write it down. A minute later a tiny pot of a gloopy sauce with lots of hard black grinding peppercorns arrived. So poor service and food. No excuse for the service, for the first 20 minutes we were the only people on the premises. Not really any excuse for the food either. Will not return.

This pub is off the beaten track and isn't a destination. It is a very traditional pub which attracts locals. The menu is exactly what you would expect from a traditional English pub, nothing more or less. We ordered a portion of potato skins to share, whilst I had the steak and ale pie and my fiancée the ham, egg and chips. The potato skins we just that, crispy skins topped with bacon and cheese, not the soggy affairs half way to a baked spud served most places. The steak and ale pie was very well flavoured and served with a good range of vegetables. Unfortunately the new potatoes were slightly undercooked, but otherwise a very enjoyable plate of food. The ham, egg and chips consisted a couple of nice slices of ham, a pair of eggs with the yolks still runny and a crisp portion of proper chips. The meal was enjoyable and was what you hope to be served when you order the dishes. The menu is what you expect with nothing to surprise you. Unfortunately the layout of the pub will probably stop it ever quite achieving a cosy feel.

We have visited the Royal Oak many times over the past few years because it's a beautiful olf building with a lovely garden and the food has always been consistently good and not at all expensive. Neither of us are drinkers so can't comment on the ales or wines but it's our favourite venue for both lunches and suppers. The menu is quite extensive and varied. We haven't eaten our way through all the main courses but everything we've had there has been absolutely delicious. The chips are actually crispy and the plates of 5 or 6 vegetables are really good. You may have to wait a while because everything is cooked from fresh but it really is worth it.The pub is small so booking is recommended for evening meals and even lunctimes can be busy (it's a popular place because it's so good). And wear warm boots in the winter. There are real log fires in the cold weather but the main door does let in the draughts so just wrap up warm and go and enjoy great service and great food.

We stayed overnight and had a three course dinner in the evening. The food was lovely just wish we were giving the option to dine outside as it was so hot in the restaurant. We didn’t realise it was an option until we had finished our meal and headed outside.

Aerodrome Cafelocation-iconClaypit Lane Goodwood Aerodrome, The Goodwood Motor Circuit, Chichester PO18 0NU EnglandBritish

This is a lovely spot in the middle of Goodwood. With a nice view of the planes came here for breakfast with a friend staff not really friendly ordered the most expensive breakfast sausage was a good quality. Apart from that it was the same as a breakfast should get a cheap backstreet café Mushrooms won’t cook properly you get a teaspoon of beans in a little pot literally a teaspoon bacon was so thin and tiny tomato not cooked. They bulk it up with two slices of white toast with cheap margarine and the toast wasn’t even butter to the edges, so all the edges were dry , nobody came over to check everything was okay. Nobody said goodbye thank you for your custom. Nothing considering Goodwood is such a big concern the people on the table next to us got up and left after eating. The go cleared the table but never sprayed it and cleaned it, so you could see crumbs all over it. There was a Servià on the floor and then a fresh couple came and sat at the table which was dirty Quite poor standards for Goodwood I don’t think I would eat here again. I can get a breakfast in a garden centre, cheaper and better quality and cooked better
