We always come back to the Royal Bengal for some of the very best Indian food in the area: they are accommodating to vegans and the spices are so well balanced that each dish is individual and delicious. And the ambience is the best: it is a very pretty and immaculately clean interior, with snowy white linen tablecloths, and the service is beyond compare.

They took us in late even though they could’ve easily gone home. They had exceptional customer service, their food was nothing short of remarkable. They offer you complimentary drinks after the meal, if you're in royston and like a good Indian meal, GO TO THE ROYAL BENGAL! thank you all, I’d rate you higher if I could, will definitely be coming back soon.

We always loved the RB before Covid, and have now returned for a curry or two since they reopened. We all enjoyed the food - as before - but now I should add that we are also very impressed with the cleanliness: all staff are masked (just in case...) and can be seen to clean tables etc between clients. They take the anti-Covid measures seriously. There’s even oodles of high quality hand wash and face masks for customers (E.g. take away clients) upon arriving. We felt perfectly safe and we would like to acknowledge the efforts of management and staff. Thanks Jay and team! Mr Mike, Susanne, Claire and Pierre.

This is a top priced curry house and used to provide food to match. I paid the extra because the food was good. last Thursday I ordered a take-away which was very poor. The have either lost their chef or are cutting costs. I would have called the meal average at best also it was single course for 2 people at 45 pounds - they should have been wearing a mask. Try another curry house in the town

Avoid. Began by our starter being taken away from the table before we had even finished, reason was that our main was ready?! Waitor or started clearing our table before we’d even finished the meal, even asked ‘are you done yet’. The restaurant hardly had anyone queuing to get in. Food was different to what was ordered and when raised with the waitor a forced apology was all we were given. Generally shocking as this place used to be great. Would not recommend. Plenty of other Indian restaurants in the town that have some level of basic customer service training. Clearly changed ownership, and quite funny to see the awards displayed on the wall, the last one being nearly 10 years ago!! Says it all!!

I visit this restaurant once a month with friends. The food here is great. The owner seems to be very well known locally and he seems outgoing and friendly. The staff are attentive but don't hover which is great. But the main reason for this review is to mention the food. As there is a group of us the dishes ordered vary. They are all plentiful and cooked to perfection. Side dishes are also well sized. I think the prices are reasonable too. I can thoroughly recommend this place. If you are reading this because you're unsure to visit or not take yourself there. You won't regret it.

Pre-booked the evening before, a table for five; myself, my Nan, my partner & two children (aged 9years & 6years old).Myself & my Nan’s Birthday’s are two days apart, so I thought that we would treat her to a curry, as she quite enjoys them. We were running quite late as certain roads in our area were closed due to relaying the roads. I phoned & updated them that we would be late, which they were very understanding. We were seated quickly & our drink orders taken quickly too. Also, asked if we would like popadoms & how many. They were shortly brought out before receiving our drinks which arrived directly after. Myself & my partner decided to have Starters. I chose Prawn Purée & my partner chose Chicken Tikka Starter. Then, for our Mains, my children chose; Chicken Tikka Masala with Plain Rice & Lamb Tikka Masala with Rice. My Nan had Chicken Tikka Biryani which traditionally comes with a vegetable curry. My partner had Chicken Tikka Garlic Rogan with Pilau Rice & I had Chicken Tikka Balti with Mushroom Rice. We always have a fantastic meal here, whether it’s an eat in meal or a takeaway. The staff are friendly, very child friendly too. Polite, attentive, well manned, well dressed. Overall, a fantastic meal!

My partner and I visited this restaurant last night having had a lovely takeaway previously, what a disappointing and shocking experience. Firstly there was a table of approx.10 nearby who were so loud we could hardly hear each other, I commented on the noise level to a waiter who replied 'yeah they'll probably just get louder if I say something...' OK not a great response but will let it go (maybe it's a one off and I don't want to spoil anyone's fun). Next the food... the chicken biryani was lovely, my partner had Chicken tikka Jalfry, the chicken was hard and the dish was tasteless, not what one would expect had it been cooked in a tandoor. The final straw was when I witnessed a waiter serving the large group their food and he actually ATE a chip from the food he was serving, I was absolutely disgusted that he thought this was acceptable behaviour, if this is happening in view of the customers what on earth is happening to the food served behind the scenes??!! I have worked in the service industry all my working life and would not tolerate this service from any of my staff, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

How sad that a place like this which once offered a warm welcome, good service and good food has lost the plot completely.Ordering was torture and the order was checked twice by other members of staff. When our main course arrived there was no room for everything on the table and the two waiters were truculent and difficult about where they placed everything and gave the impression it was our fault. With very poor grace they left dirty serving trolley beside us to accommodate a single naan. One member of our party ordered a second drink and once again the service was surly and unpleasant.Worse was to come when we asked to take the leftovers home and were told that if we took more than two containers we would be charged 50p per tray. The degree of truculence increased measurably and the whole manner of the waiter was nothing short of hostile, he threw empty dishes and cutlery on the table and glared at members of our party. It has been customary in this establishment for complementary drinks to be served this did not happen and a box of Quality Street was shoved at us in the most ignorant way imaginable. It is to be noted that the proprietor was absent and that his staff are clearly letting him down when he is not there. The staff should note too that the proprietor is known to us and will be informed directly, it disappoints us to write this report of a most unpleasant experience.

We had pre booked for 7.30pm. Arrived a few minutes before. We were kept waiting for a few minutes without any real explanation as to why. The staff were muttering away to each other, but not us. We were told if you can wait half an hour, we can put you on this table. (People were still seated there and eating!). Or we can put you on this table, but you must be gone by nine. Given the restaurant was 80% empty I wasn't really sure what was going on. The waiter just kept saying "I'm trying to get you a nice table". We were eventually sat at a table, which we could hardly fit around, so we moved to another table. Which again was so a very tight fit. The chairs are built as booths and are fixed. The gap between the table and the chair back is way to small. The 4 of us squeezed in, and put up with it. There was no real room to move, and when the food arrived the plates were touching out clothes. The whole thing felt like a child's table. You are probably thinking we are 4 huge people, but we are not. The food was average Indian. The service was quick thankfully, as we really wanted to get out of the seats. £125 for 4 people to be squeezed in to a stupidly small table, to eat fairly average food and come away feeling like we were an inconvenience to the staff by turning up. They have a few good tables, where the chairs move, and they clearly know that have a problem, so why not remodel a little so people are comfortable. Rather that cram as many in as possible. We left, went to the pub over the road, where we could feel comfortable. We won't be going again.

We live local and have enjoyed many visits to this great Restaurant but for some reason we have not been recently until on returning from Holiday we decided to pop in for a meal. We had not booked on arrival it was busy for a Monday Evening but they did get us a table straight away. Food & Service was excellent as always delivers both really well. A very enjoyable evening.

Cards on the table, I worked in this restaurant when it was the 'British Raj' about 35 years ago.It was my birthday, so I thought I'd look in and see what it's like now. I have visited since I worked there, but not since the place changed hands. It's s small restaurant, in an L shape which previous knowledge tells me is because it goes round the back of the shop beside it. Also within the elbow of the 'L' are the toilets, which makes them convenient to everyone. The decor is painted cream walls, which look clean but a bit austere. There is a certain flexibility in seating, but I'd estimate room for no more than about 60 people. It was 8pm on a Wednesday evening, so we hadn't bothered to book. The manager seemed a bit put out with that, but given that there were about 10 people already eating there was room for us. We were shown to a table for 4 which seemed a bit undersized, this seemed to be standard however, the L shape is not ideal for a restaurant, and they need space for people to get past.We ordered drinks. My daughters ordered cokes, I had a Cobra and my partner a whisky and coke. The cokes which were produced were flat, and my partner was given a severely limited choice of whiskies (Jack Daniels or Grouse. Since she likes neither she went with Southern Comfort). We sent the coke back and got an equally poor coke and a strange tasting ginger ale instead. We gave up. The food, however, was very nice. It would be helpful if the menu explained a bit more, and I think absolute newbies to curry would struggle, but there is the usual mix and brief descriptions of hotness. Most of it is generic, whereas I look for things I haven't tried before, so I went for the chicken tawa, which was nice. The family liked the taste of what they had selected as well, and the portions were generous. On the whole,I'd recommend this restaurant for the food, however I felt the service was merely adequate and the drinks poor.

Cards on the table, I worked at this restaurant 35 years ago, when it was the British Raj and under different management. The restaurant is small, I'd estimate it at about 60 covers, and is in an odd 'L' shape, like a long corridor from the front to the kitchen. From previous experience, I know this is because it consists of the High Street property and properties on the next street over (Upper King Street). The walls have lost the floche wallpaper and now are plain cream paint, which gives the place a clean, slightly 'antiseptic' feel.We have been to the restaurant since it changed management, but it was some time ago, and may have been before the current management. It was my birthday, so I fancied trying the Bengal. Being a Wednesday evening we hadn't booked, which seemed to put them out, however after a short wait we were shown to a table for four (my partner, our daughters and I) which however seemed a little small for our comfort. I understand that space is at a premium in what is effectively a long corridor with a corner in it, but it seemed a little claustrophobic to me, and again it seemed to put out the staff when I moved the table slightly away from the wall.My only criticism would be the drinks. My pint of Cobra was fine, however my partner wanted a whisky and coke, and was offered a choice of JD or grouse, neither of which she likes. She eventually went for Southern Comfort. My daughters had a coke each, which was flat and watery. We sent them back and asked for a ginger ale for my eldest instead. The replacement coke was no better, and the ginger ale was again flat and watery. When I go to an Indian restaurant, I look for the unusual. The menu consists of three A4 pages, but to be fair there is a lot to choose from, there just isn't much explanation of what things are. A working knowledge of Indian meals would certainly be an advantage. Most of the offerings are the generic variety, however my family tell me their selections were tasty and well executed. I went for a chicken tawa, which was (unusually, as stated above) described as a Punjabi dish. It was tasty and well presented, although I had to cut it up since I was eating it with chapatis. It was tasty enough that I ate too much and regretted it later, but that is in no way the fault of the restaurant. They didn't have any problem with us taking my daughters remaining prawn curry and remaining bindi and mushroom bajhee home with us.I'm puzzled why there was such a problem with the soft drinks, otherwise the meal and the service was fine. The total bill for 4 meals including drinks was about £80, which seems good value to me.

Best Indian in Royston. Its only quite a small restaurant so is sometimes worth booking if going at prime time. The staff are very friendly and you get a free drink at the end of the meal. Love the food, never had a bad meal here and the service is pretty quick. Definitely recommend and will no doubt be going back very soon.

We called in on the off chance at 7.00pm on a Friday evening. The restaurant is quite small and as one might expect, it was fully booked. We were about to leave when the owner/manager informed us that there was one table available but only until 8.00pm. As this visit was only for food, and not an occasion we agreed that if they could serve it, we could eat it in that time scale.Well, both parties were as good as their word. The meal was served up promptly and was first class. We have one favourite Indian restaurant closer to home but this was just as good, if not better. It's a bit of a trek for us but next time we are passing we will make sure to book.

We had a really nice meal here, our waiter was very attentive & advised us on potential dishes to order. Didn't get the same good vibe from the other waiters though. We hadn't booked & the manager/owner wasn't that impressed but as it was pm, we were given a table, the restaurant started filling up around 8 am, which was the time we were told the table would be needed from. Almost enough time to finish our courses but not coffee after. Food averaged out at £20 each & we did have a lot of food.If we visited Royston again, we would go back.

I used to visit this place years ago, moved away and now back in the area I tried it again. Although it has changed hands, it is still the best Indian food in Royston. The decor has changed to more a modern (but bland) type but the service is still great and the staff were very helpful and nice. The manager was a bit unfriendly but he was having to deal with a drunk man waiting for a take away so I can fully understand why he came across as unfriendly, the poor man was having to remain professional in the face of abuse! Very much enjoyed our evening here and will be returning soon

The best Indian ( actually Bangladesh) food in the area. The food is consistently good and fresh. The food is well balanced with both well known dishes as well as some lest well known. The staff here are just good. They work hard and provide a good level of staff satisfaction. The same quality is maintained in their take away. By far the best in Royston and surrounding areas as far as Bassingbourne and Baldock.

After moving out of the area 3 years ago I returned with my partner for a meal last night, the food was excellent and the service was good too, my partner was bowled over at the standard and quality of our food saying it was the best she had ever had, I tend to agree as at approaching fifty have frequented many establishments so making the hour journey was well worth it. Small interior so would recommend booking if you want a quiet table, we were sat next to a party of eleven of different ages who were the loudest Northerners I have ever heard south of the Wash!In short great food reasonably priced with good service, what more could you want when going out for an indian meal, well done staff.Mac & Donna
