I love going to the Rose and crown and joining in with the happy jolly conversations of the locals. Meeting jeff the miserable landlord and the strange regulars makes me realise that things aren’t quite as bad as they could be…thanks everyone! See customer service is still a number one priority🙄

The Rose and Crown in Chorleywood (note the location on the common, not the pub of the same name on the Harefield side of Rickmansworth) has long been known for excellent food, a good selection of beer, and the hospitality of the landlord and landlady. After lockdown it opened again for drinks, operating under careful but pragmatic restrictions. The restaurant at the back of the pub has been converted into a drinks area (as it used to be many years ago). Food has not been available until last week and the return is a triumph. Gone are the excellent steaks, pies, fish etc. to be replaced by a thoughtful tapas menu. We have eaten there twice since the resumption, both occasions proving excellent. Highlights included salmon ceviche (very fresh and tangy), sweet and sour spare ribs, a delightful lamb rump with a garlic dipping sauce, and octopus. Also added to the full menu is the traditional backed camembert (with the addition of roast garlic and an onion chutney, sweet potatoes fries, and pork belly. All the dishes are tasty, filling and innovative. There is also a small selection of afters, but so far I have not ventured there. We were told that the sticky toffee pudding is superb. Another advantage is that the food is a good excuse to explore Jeff’s wine list. We had an excellent Portuguese red blend. Capacity is down during the Covid-madness, so booking as advised. This will become more of an issue as word of the food gets out and the weather turns less favourable (there is some outdoor seating). One traditional touch is that punters are trusted to add a tip as they see fit, not be subjected to the ‘discretionary but dare to complain’ service charge seen in other local establishments (see my other recent review). The staff are diligent in cleaning the tables between guests and all the regulations seem to be followed. Great to have this favourite back.

Enjoyed a lovely meal with my wife and good friends. Although I have had a drink here before, it was the first time I had eaten at The Rose and Crown and it was a wonderful experience. We had a wide choice of meals, of which everybody was very happy with. I can highly recommend the liver and bacon, delicious! A good wine list, covering all budgets. Our waitress Julia was very friendly and extremely helpful, as was Holly. Compliments to the kitchen staff, thank you very much for a great meal.

After festive season, lunch with my sister and this is the nearest pub, on the common. Food and service very good...mushrooms and a very large supreme of salmon for my sister, prawn cocktail, so large my wife could not eat it all and liver and bacon and for me whitebait (plump fish, elsewhere usually thin and dried up) followed by sausage mash and onion gravy...now I have a healthy appetite but I could not eat three of these sausages. Excellent value for money...we shall return next visit.

Lovely little pub. Fantastic friendly service. It was a beautiful day so we were able to sit outside with the dogs but also dog friendly so could have eaten inside. The menu was great. Lots of choice including a long list of specials. We shared a starter and all had different mains. I went for the Steak and Ale pie which was lovely. And it came with chips... this apparently is a big things as in the past chips has not been an option. Every one of us commented on how good the food was and would happily visit again in the future. We have never seen anyone dissapointed around us when we visit, so I am puzzled to read any negative reviews. Around 20 members of our Chilterns walking group went for lunch at the Rose & Crown, attractively located on the edge of Chorleywood Common, after our walk this week. We ordered our meals before setting off, and they were ready to be served fairly promptly upon our return. All of our food was beautifully cooked and presented, and was tremendously good value at £14.50 for two courses, £17.50 for three courses, all from a very tempting range of options. Portion sizes were generous. My own selection of dishes - portobello mushrooms stuffed with blue cheese for starter, calves liver and bacon with mash for main course, and an utterly yummy sticky toffee pudding with stem ginger ice-cream for dessert - were all superb. Service, by two very pleasant young ladies, was efficient and friendly. All in all, lunch at the Rose & Crown was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. We shall definitely be looking forward to visiting there again.

Came here with my walkers group for our Christmas lunch, all 32 of us. We were a bit muddy and bedraggled after a morning of showers, but we were made very welcome as always. Serving that many people in a relatively small room was a challenge, but the staff managed it all with a smile and no complaints. The meal was excellent. The portions were as big as the food was tasty. I particularly liked my scallops starter and the inevitable Christmas Pudding dessert, which unusually was square, not round. Just been for Sunday lunch. The three meat eaters had excellent roasts and were very pleased with them. When I asked for a vegetarian option, I was told I could have the Yorks pudding and the vegetables - in other words, the Sunday roast, without the meat. When asked what the protein content was, I was told there wasn't any. Is there no nut roast on offer? No. What was worst was the attitude; no apology, no explanation and no offer to provide something specially cooked. Luckily, I eat fish. I realise it was a busy Sunday, but not to offer a vegetarian choice in this day and age seems very out of date and inflexible. We won't be going again. Very sad, as we have enjoyed taking visitors there in the past. (And I would hate to think what people with special diets might be told!)

Another of Chorleywood's typical village pubs, situated on one side of the 900 acre Common. It has a small front bar area and a slightly larger restaurant area at the rear with it's own separate bar. It serves a good range of draught beers and classic pub grub. Staff are friendly and welcoming. There's parking at the rear and some limited outside seating at the front with a great view across the Common. I was aware of this place as a good old boozer several decades ago. With a lot of wood, including panelling, small bar and no poncy seats, it still has many of a proper old pub's attributes. However, though the overall impression is unpretentious their food is quite sophisticated. The menu descriptions may look simple but the dishes revealed many more ingredients and are beautifully presented, and a good size - even scallops come in 3s+ trimmings. Jolly good 2 course lunch menu for £14.95. Wines reasonable but real ales now nearer to £4.20 a pint - at least there's a range of at least three. Service cheerful and competent. My parents (in their 70s) have been coming to this pub for years and cite it as a firm favourite. It was my second visit to The Rose and Crown-the occasion was an extended family evening meal. The back restaurant room isn't large but doesn't feel too cramped. The weather was extremely warm and the windows were open; however it felt fairly uncomfortable. The staff couldn't help this of course but it did mar the meal a bit. The second thing I noticed was how noisy it was. Because it's a popular place, and the seating area is not big the noise was amplified. We were a group of 7 and it was difficult to hold a conversation with those members further away due to the acoustics.Initially the serving staff were very attentive and friendly. However towards the end of the meal I did notice that two of the three waitresses were more intent on having a conversation at the bar area rather than serving the tables. Therefore I had to go up to request coffees and the bill. There was a good choice of food on the menus, catering for both vegetarians and meat eaters. There were also a number of specials for starter and main. When it arrived I thought the food was fine but nothing out of the ordinary. I had a feta and parma ham salad to start and a harissa lamb skewer for main course. The dessert I chose was a ginger and honey cheesecake which was very nice. The rest of my family seemed to enjoy their meals so that's good.I really want to rave about this place as my parents think it's so good. I just don't really get it. Sure, it's nice enough and the food is decent but I don't think it's anything special. Perhaps I'm just missing something...

The Rose & Crown has been a favourite of our family for many years but on a recent dinner there I was less impressed. Let me first qualify things by saying that I am a very fussy eater but in the past I have always been able to find something on the starter menu I liked, choosing from the chalk board that has now disappeared. This time there was nothing listed that I could accept. No old favourites like prawn cocktail, Palma ham and melon, and two of the dishes offered were liver-based, which unfortunately I don't like amongst my foibles.I also felt the professionalism of service had gone sharply down-hill. A shrill waitress with a seeming lack of training didn't help. On ordering my sweet I was asked if I wanted coffee, to which I replied yes but after the sweet course please. I never got my coffee. The pub was very busy and I am sure the owner was delighted, but I fear a degree of complacency needs correcting and the menu adjusted somewhat for the very conventional diner. We will give it some time before venturing there again.

We had a lovely meal here on a Friday night, lovely scallops with prawns to start and a steak for me and a nice piece of fish for my wife. Good portions. Would definitely recommend and will go again soon!

Small, overpriced and over-rated. Indifferent staff and a disinterested and aloof manager. Not at all like other TA reviews. Not going back.

We booked the Rose and Crown for a dinner with friends last night as it has a nice location and looks cute from the outside. However, we were all very pleasantly surprised at the quality, taste and presentation from such a small local pub. Food was excellent, I had a fillet steak and the quality was definitely on a par with the West End restaurants I frequent and my guests all agree it was way above average.Highly Recommended.

5 of us ate here, in bar because dog not allowed in restaurant - only two or three tables and Even restaurant q small so recommend booking. Food was really tasty, and puddings went down v well. Attentive staff. Just loses a point for the v high prices (even for the London area) and slightly cramped conditions. V popular with walkers as huge common just across road.

We visited the Rose and Crown several times over the holiday season and always experienced a warm welcome from the landlord and his wife who are backed by a great team. The pub itself is charming and situated overlooking picturesque Chorleywood Common. The food is exceptional, with portions on the generous side and the restaurant is nicely busy. I recommend the superb Barnsley Chop. Definitely recommended.

Popped in several times recently, when visiting in-laws in C/wood, last time on Christmas Day. A walk across the Common, then a pint (or two!) of a well-kept London Pride an excellent Sunday afternoon tonic. Friendly, helpful service, lots of 'buzzy' chatter going on. Highly recommended

We were staying overnight at a nearby B&B and booked an evening meal here several weeks ago. Although we had been recommended another local pub for an evening meal I’d checked out TA and decided to try the Rose and Crown instead. It felt like the right decision when I spoke to the landlady on the phone, as she was so friendly, and it was.The pub is in between attractive houses on a pleasant part of the common and it feels like a comfortable home when you walk in through the front door. The landlord and staff were welcoming and friendly, and there was a pleasant background of chat and banter from the locals. Great choice of perfectly-kept real ales – most of which were sensibly session strength. The dining room behind the bar was stylish but still homely and, although small, neighbouring tables weren’t too close. The food was somewhere between between pub grub and gastro, although the menu seemed to be aimed more at the gastro end. No complaints but have had better at the prices, but have also had worse. Having said that, we agreed that the mashed and roast potatoes were amongst the best we’d ever had!The Rose and Crown is one of those pubs I occasionally come across that I really wish was my local. Homely and friendly atmosphere, with good beers and food.

I went for lunch with my extended family, The lunch menu is vast. As well as the standard menu, they also have a selection of roasts (lamb, prok & beef) as well as a special menu. I started with a Spicey Prawns on Toast, which was nothing like I expected. The sauce had a depth of flavour that I had not expected. This was truly an amzing starter that the title does not do justice to. Try it - you will be delighted!I also had the roast lamb, which was delicious. Not over cooked like many places, but soft. pink & tender.Washed down with some Chablis & a nice Fleurie, it was an absolute champion of a lunch. It's quite a schlep to get there from my home town of Godalming - but great to go to when visiting relatives. It was not the first time I have been here for a meal, and certainly will not be the last!

I was taken here last night for my birthday treat by my daughter, what a fabulous surprise. On entering the bar we were greeted with a very welcoming landlord and a roaring log fir, great selection of real ales which we just had to try !Then into the small but lovely restaraunt,.We were greeted by a very charming waitress who gave us the menus and ran through the daily specials with us.The food was to die for, definitely not pub grub, more like a Michelin * establishment, the service was excellent, a really great waitress who did know her job, such a change thesedaysA comprehensive, well chosen and sensibley priced wine list as well, having 2/3 of my favorite wines was a bonusThe fixed 3 course set menu is outstanding value for money at just £17.50, crumbs, most places charge that for a main course !A real gem of a pub, wish it was my local !

Great pub scene but limited space - friendly clientele and staff, great in the summer not sure how it would be in the winter. Restaurant food is very traditional but they don't do chips (Roast, New, Boiled, Mash, dauphinoise potatoes) and no rice which is bizarre when they have a curry on the menu. The quality and flavours are good just need to choose carefully.

Best pub in the world. Great little place with a great atmosphere in the bar. The owners are fantastic. The hidden gem is the amazing food in the restaurant and served in the bar. No pub grub here, this is proper bistro style food. A must visit and of course amazing views across the common.

We wanted a pub for lunch with two families, circumspect rang en route to check they had space, and we were very clear we had children with us and how many , We were placed in small dining room (having offered to sit outside)....no problem. Nevertheless despite normal happy albeit chatty four children under 5 and a baby we were asked to keep the noise down within 10 mins and made to feel very uncomfortable in favour of the other guests. Discussed this with the landlord at the end as we felt we should have been warned children unwelcome. The boundaries were very blurred and poorly managed. Only to be told "in my day we would never have let children scream like that". What a ridiculous over reaction as not one screen between them, just vibrant happy banter. When challenged on why he had not just said we don't have children in this pub...his response was "I can't tell people only well behaved children ". Landlord is very unpersonable and hostile. Waiting staff friendly but don't even attempt to go with children.

There really is no point in complaining to the landlord if you are less than satisfied with your meal or service as he isn't interested. When a friend complained that the sausages were burnt he was told 'no that's how people like them cooked'. On another occasion a customer suggested to him that it was unhygienic to stroke his dog while serving to which he was told 'well f--k off if you don't like it' !! Hilarious. The location on the common is great and we still pop in occasionally (only for a drink) if we're out walking and just ignore his wrath and lack of customer service skills. Be warned!!
