What a gem ...the most amazing Portuguese food ..just so much of it ! The Seafood rice stupendous. And to add to the lovely experience such a great couple David and Maria ..will be making this a regular

Visited Sunday lunchtime with friends. We had not booked having been let down by another establishment in the area. We received a warm welcome and all enjoyed the varied main courses and sweets. Authentic Portuguese cuisine and well worth a visit.

Unfortunately a poor experience for my dads 70th birthday which we were all looking forward to. (Table of 5) 1 hr wait for starters and we had to keep asking for drinks service. Another 45 mins for mains. Two of the three fish dishes were really well received. One of these was bland. Two steak dishes were ordered as medium rare and came out cold and well overdone (almost dry). Sent one back as the other person was too hungry and just ate it. They re made the steak which came out medium rare but I just don’t know how they can’t cook a steak. It must have been grilled as it was grey with no charring at all. No seasoning. No taste. Just really poor steak cooking for a well regarded restaurant and very disappointing. Wasn’t asked if we were enjoying the meals during or after we had finished. Just served when they were ready.

As a Portuguese, it’s really hard to find true Portuguese food made with great quality ingredients in the U.K. Lucky, a couple of months ago I visited Maria’s Kitchen for lunch. It was life changing. The place is very welcoming, very cozy. The people are really nice and helpful. But the food. Oh my! The food is tasty, well cooked, well seasoned, well served. It’s like being in Portugal (actually, I’ve had worse Portuguese food in Portugal). The seafood rice is a piece of heaven! It’s my second time and I’ll definitely be coming back!

Freshly cooked food and an interesting menu, desserts are unique and delicious very good value for money.

We visited this pub/restaurant for a weekend get together of friends - it was spacious and light but the décor looked a bit dated. Our group felt that Maria’s Kitchen were very slow on service and not really attentive to our needs. For example, insufficient menus given out, we had to ask for them to take drink orders, ask for water for the table, ask for more cutlery after it had been used for the first course, and the final bill was not accurate. The portions were quite big, and generally we all found that the dishes were tasty but more like home cooking and average in terms of quality. There were some notable dishes, for example; the Salmon in orange sauce, good fresh veggies, a nice House dessert - tiramisuy - light & fluffy topping, and a baked custard pud that was delicious. The Sea Bass with Prawn sauce main was very good but what was expected from the description was not what came, it would have been better described as sea bass in a herby Provencal sauce with prawns. It was disappointing that although the cod special main was tasty, the side salad served with it was underwhelming and the disproportionately large helping of potatoes were so wafer thin that it was more like a plate full of crisps. The chocolate mousse was again just ok and it wouldn't have taken much effort to add a couple of mint leaves or berries to make it look more appealing. It was a shame that a Portuguese Restaurant had run out of the Portuguese custard tarts on the menu! So overall only an average dining experience – we still enjoyed ourselves but that was probably more to do with the company rather than the quality of our dining experience!

Stopped here for lunch on a long bike ride . Food intolerances made the menu a little complicated so I asked for some fish , rice and salad gluten and dairy free. Delicious meal served in good time . Defo worth another visit just for the food

I came here as was recommended… really disappointed with the staff. Specially the male boss, he is so rude, is not bothered weather the customer is happy or not. The prices seem to change as they want too.

Came with a friend as it was recommended. Really disappointed. Took too long to get a drink, and then when we did i was not offered an ice bucket for the bottle of wine so due to the temperature, this became far too warm too quickly. Restaurant was overbearingly warm; asked to open a window but apparently due to the age of the building this is impossible. Server did not know the menu - when I asked for the wine recommended on the website he did not know what this was, or which were similar to other types of grape. I had Portuguese sausage to start (similar to chorizo), but this was not pleasant being rather burnt and too large a portion. It would be better to offer smaller sizes and an option of a range. I then opted for the burger which was quite frankly disgusting. I have had better an a 2 star all inclusive. I ate 2 bites and then left it. When the waitress came she did address this and I commented on how poor it was and not what I expected. She shrugged and didn't offer any alternative or compensation.

Fantastic food, lovely atmosphere, super friendly and efficient service. Feels like being on holiday. My favourite restaurant anywhere

Support local independent businesses. Maria’s Kitchen is a perfect example of a family who work tirelessly to serve the community delicious freshly cooked meals.

We made a reservation as we were a large group for a 50th birthday, but the staff seemed unwelcoming from the moment we arrived. The food was nice, nothing special but fairly priced. Unfortunately one of our mains arrived undercooked so had to be sent back but this was resolved quickly. The sangria was lovely! Once our meals arrived the staff didn’t check whether our meals were ok or if we wanted any more drinks throughout. We had taken a birthday cake but the staff didn’t seem happy about this (I had called ahead to check) and just handed it back at the end of the meal with the candles unlit. We would have had teas and coffees if they’d been offered but again we were not asked. Unfortunately the poor service ruined the experience for us. If you’re wanting a nice atmosphere for a birthday meal I’d look elsewhere.

We have our own Portuguese restaurant in Devon and so while visiting Warwickshire we stopped by Maria’s kitchen near Daventry to have some Portuguese food! The village where Maria’s Kitchen is very cute as is the pub where she serves her menu. We sat by the fire and had a Sagres & Sumol while ordering our food. The beer was great! We ordered to start roasted meat with pickles & chillis garlic prawns (fresh not frozen - we later found out) which were both very delicious and authentic. For mains we had Seafood Rice and Octopus with Clams - again both very tasty and well presented. The portion size was also very generous. For dessert we ordered the homemade Puddim - like Crème Caramel which was also very authentic and certainly home made. After Maria and David came and spoke with us about their restaurant and their menu and made us feel very welcome. We hope to welcome them one day to our restaurant in Devon. Até Breve

Another superb Sunday lunch a regular for us but the first time for the rest of our family. Enjoyed by everyone plates all cleared but very large meals. Will be back with rest of the family in 2 weeks for a super celebration.

What a pleasant surprise, found on Google and booked a table last minute, very accommodating. Lovely pub atmosphere, warm, welcoming and friendly with lots of regulars which is a good sign. The food was presented beautifully and tasted delicious, so nice to have this restaurant...

This is my ‘go to’ pub/restaurant. Fabulous location on the village green in a picturesque village. The atmosphere is always warm and friendly. Maria and David are wonderful hosts. Food is always fantastic and very reasonably priced too. The menu choices is excellent. It is the perfect venue for any occasion. I very highly recommend.

Dark times for the restaurant business but Maria’s kitchen step up to the plate ( literally). We love this place, but on lockdown we cannot go out to our favourite restaurant. Maria and David have offered our village a takeaway service, delivered to the door, to keep us going. As usual excellent quality authentic Portuguese cuisine. Thank you so much. X

I had a meal as a part of a Rotary Evening out with about 16 of us. The food was different with a Portuguese element. Marias Kitchen is a Restaurant within a Local Pub. Parking is limited but easy. The Meals are very good and the portion sizes above average. My Steak I can say was excellent, in fact one of the best I have had. Yes will go again. Management Many thanks.

Beautiful homemade food and flavors. I have ordered monkfish and prawn dish in rice, it had loads of fish and prawns in and just right amount of rice (as opposite to many other places where you get tons of rice and you need to search and hunt for prawns or meat). I managed to finish the whole dish, felt full and satisfied in a nice way. Will certainly return.

The food was perfect, its Portuguese menu but there is something for everyone with dishes you will recognise. I had a mixed meat skewer, each piece of meat as perfectly cooked and of an obviously cook quality.I cannot recommend this enough, its like home cooked food and to a great standard.Okay so the service wasn't fast, but and good things come to those who wait

Visited Maria's Kitchen a couple of times, and every time we go there we feel welcome. Great food, tasty soup for the kids, and lovely Portuguese deserts!

Visited as two couples. One of the best menus I have come across, something for everybody. The waiter who took our order was very helpful in explaining various options. I don’t often choose steaks nowadays owing to disappointments elsewhere, but I was very pleased with my hot stone cooked sirloin steak. Much bigger than I expected! Others chose fish dishes and were similarly impressed. Relaxed dining in ambient surroundings. Proprietor took time out to wish us good night when we left. Recommended.

A cosy pub with authentic Portugese food (and traditional British grub for the culinarily challenged)

We, Daventry Ramblers had lunch here on Saturday at the end of a particularly muddy walk. The welcome was fantastic despite the fact that they were hosting a wedding at the same time as our visit. Very soon after being seated in the conservatory, very warm and cozy due to the log burner, food came out. It was all magnificent. I had some excellent shell on Prawns and a bowl of chips. Just perfect. Quite a feat that it all was served quickly what with the wedding in the next room.

Pub was slightly quiet - thursday evening with a few locals drinking and and three tables eating. The locals were very friendly. Foodwise starter of prawns in garlic was very good but really enjoyed the pork scallops main dish with homecooked chips and salad. My wife had the mixed skewers which were also very good. Super Bock beer was excellent along with the bottles of port that that david the owner went upstairs to get and open. Really good meal out.

We booked a table of 10 of us for an afternoon catching up with family and chose here as a nice change from Sunday roast. Table was ready, food was brilliant, staff were engaging and we ended up staying for the best part of four hours in the end. Have used a few times now and will definitely look to use again. Piping hot, tasty, traditional Portuguese food. All of our group very much enjoyed their meals, starters and deserts. A few bottles of wine and some drinks made for a great relaxed afternoon.

I visited with 2 colleagues the other Tuesday evening mixing business with a very pleasurably meal and they were impressed, David and team were as brilliant as normal nothing to much trouble, food excellent!!! Starters 10/10 mains the same and all in all with the drinks great value It all made for a fantastic evening!!

Always authentic, high quality Portuguese cuisine. David and Maria are incredibly welcoming and the food consistently good. Yes you may have to wait a while while the food is prepared from scratch but I promise you it will be worth the wait. We always have a plate of tapas to share and some good red wine while the seafood rice is cooking!

Pleased to say that our 2nd and 3rd visit did not disappoint. The steak was lovely, perfectly cooked, and the kitchen was very accommodating to a starter as a main with chips. The salmon and orange was also surprisingly good, plenty of salmon.

We have spent many happy holidays in Portugal so to have an authentic Portuguese restaurant on the doorstep is an absolute bonus. The food is well presented, delicious and the genuine article. Squid is a family favourite, the rice dish is also yummy. If I could find any faults I would say that the service is slow and it’s rather expensive but I will be going back ASAP.

Just had lunch at the old Romer Arms, now Maria's Kitchen. We used to visit Maria when the restaurant was in Daventry, and the food and the service is even better now they are at the Romer. Good quality, plentiful Portuguese cooking.

Went for an evening meal but ended up walking out after being totally ignored. Had to get our menues. People who arrived at the same time as us, sitting at the nexttable , got menues brought to their table, drinks and food orders taken , whilst we got totally ignored. Nobody came to clear our table from the previous customers, so we sat with dirty plates next to us. Very poor...so we left.

After a nice long walk around the stunning countryside called in for a lunch time drink. Saw the menu decided to have a meal, result. Exceptional quality,fresh, great value. Nice garden, spotless interior, will go back. Highly recommend.

Grilled sardines on a Monday night, not a bad idea. Just unsure about the welcoming (not rude bit non existent). A bit dark in there.

Absolutely lovely food, and plenty of it. I thoroughly enjoyed my prawn omelet, chips and salad, which I chose from an extensive menu. Not having been before, I shall certainly go again and if you are in the area, this is a special place to visit. Maria came and saw us afterwards, and we all said how much we had enjoyed the meal.

I went there to try real authentic portuguese food for dinner, and it was a great surprise, everything was well prepared and cooked in a normal traditional portuguese style and food. It got very busy and a lot of people are there to eat the nice food. The portions are great and the starters are very good as well, especially the tapas and the bread. Ideal as well for occasions. The potato chips are really good.

Absolute gem of a place with exquisite food and great friendship and hospitality. My wife and I, and sometimes other family members, often make the 110 miles round trip to eat, and it's well worth the effort to sample the culinary delights provided by Maria, David and their family.

We were fans of Maria’s when it was in a little shop in Daventry and were delighted when it moved to Newnham and we are thrilled to see it going from strength to strength.

Restaurante português no meio da Inglaterra, pequeno e aconchegante com pratos deliciosos, vale a pena conhecer !!!!

I went or a meal last Thursday with three other people and we had an excellent evening.

Visited on Saturday evening. Called and booked at short notice and despite being very busy the owner was very accommodating and squeezed us in. Really pleased he did. Starters were nice, good portion size but not so big they filled you up before the main. The mains were excellent. I had a mixed meat skewer which consisted of beef, pork & chicken with peppers, tomorrow & onion. All cooked perfectly and served with home cooked chips. What more could a guy want (a beer I here you say?!)....the draught beer was clear, smooth and refreshing and accompanied the meal perfectly. My Mrs chose salmon in orange sauce with potatoes and veg. She’s diary and wheat intolerant but the owner was helpful throughout and assured us neither ingredients would be used. Cooked superbly, well presented with two decent size salmon fillets. Finished off with coffee and then sked if it was possible to make up a caipirinha which lad behind the bar was happy to do.

Our Portuguese friends took us here to enjoy a geniune Portuguese meal, I have to say the food was very good and the service was excelent. My wife has Coeliacs and therefore cannot eat wheat or Wheat products. The server checked ingrediant and even brought the packet for my wife to check herself when he wasn't sure. Both my wifi and I ordered Chorizo for starters and to be honest it was a big portion and we could have shared one between us. My wife ordered the Salmon in Orange sauce which she really enjoyed. I ordered the mixed meat skewers which was served with sald and chips. The skewer was beef, chicken, red and yellow peppers, onion and tomatoes, I would recommend. For dessert I ordered the biscuit cake which again was very enjoyable. To drink I had a Super Bock and my wife had a very nice Sangria. This may have been our first visit but I don't think it will be our last as we are both already looking forward to another visit and the opportunity to try another Portuguese dish.

Maria’s Kitchen was always great when in Daventry but the ambiance and surroundings of the Romer Arms is so much nicer. We were warmly welcomed and the service was very friendly. The menu is wonderfully varied, mainly fish or meat. We are always drawn to the fish and never disappointed. The squid with clams and gorgeous cubes potatoes was delicious - important to order some bread to wipe up the delicious sauce. We have previously had the delicious seafood rice, very highly recommended. We will be back very soon.

I eat at this place on a regular basis. The food is great, freshly cooked, and the family who own and run the place are lovely people. Authentic Portuguese food and great fusion of Portuguese cafe bar and British pub.

My husband and I go to Maria's Kitchen regularly and we have brought many friends with us, who also loved it. We find the food really tasty and the portions are well served. If you appreciate Portuguese food, that's the place to go to. It's hard to find a place outside Portugal that meets our expectations but we are lucky enough to have Maria's kitchen nearby.

First visit on recommendation by friends. Portuguese cuisine and extensive menu to choose from. I chose sardines as a starter followed by monk fish prawns and rice. Main course not what I expected but it was really good, filling and tasty. Definitely worth another visit to try the other dishes! Very reasonably priced too!

David and Maria coped admirably with a large party for a special Birthday celebration. Every main course dish was thoroughly enjoyed and not a scrap left despite generous portions. Oh and the custard tarts !!! A fabulous evening all round. Many thanks... don’t hesitate ..just book ahead. Particularly at weekends this little gem is proving very popular.

We were visiting family local to the village and David managed to fit us all in even though they were really busy on a Saturday night. The fish & chips, steak, and pork and mushrooms were really lovely, and the complimentary port a lovely touch. Very reasonable, proper home cooked food. Thank you David and Maria.

Saw pub when cycling past on a number of occasions. Went for a drink and we liked the atmosphere and the great choice on the menu. Back a couple of weeks later and had a very good tasty and sensibly priced meal.

Went out with friends early on a Friday night. We ordered cod mornay, seafood stew with rice and a chicken and mushroom dish. Mine (the seafood) was delicious - and plenty of it for £14.95. The portion sizes were good and the menu extensive. We had three mains, two rounds of blackcurrant and sodas, two puddings and a coffee and it was around £53. Not bad we thought.

This little gem is hidden behind the facade of an old pub, sadly disfigured by a drooping Sky Sport banner. Negative comments end here!

Friends live less than 200 yards away and knowing we visit Portugal every year they said we should give it a try. Great idea. It was busy on the Friday we visited. It's a family-run eatery, the five-some originating in the east of Portugal. The menu has something for everyone and we were not disappointed. The caldo verde went down a treat as did my squid and my wife's garlic king prawns. Yummy. The mains were excellent too. My clams and octopus with garlic potatoes was a handsome dish, the salt cod equally so and indeed the other two mains. My biscuit cake, a Portuguese tiramisu, tasted superb and complimentary Port too. The coffee is Camelo (the best) and the house wines authentic and very palatable. Two bottles of wine, four each of starters and mains and a couple of puds and a bill of £114. What a bargain! If only there were less than 230 miles between our house and Maria's.

Another outstanding meal at Maria’s- took some friends that love everything Portuguese. Every dish authentic and of high quality. And cooked to order so beautifully fresh. David encouraged us to to practice our Portuguese which was great fun.

We went Friday having been with Portuguese friends when they were based on Daventry town centre.we were one of two couples in there after reading trip advisors reports about waiting for folder were prepared for the wait..starter of calamares and Tuna seafood pate both were excellent main course did take a short time to arrive but both were not and freshly cooked, taste large portions. Would have liked a sweet but too full. Baring in mind local Portuguese use this indicates good is authentic!! Would recommend and price good to.

We went to Maria's for a birthday meal. It was our first try of Portuguese food. We were very impressed. It is authentic, generous portions and served by a very cheerful and friendly landlord (David). We went back again two days later and were completely satisfied. David and Maria have added a new dimension to dining in the area. Thoroughly recommended.

Used to visit when called Maria's Café in Daventry, lovely family feel, not like a pub, we arrived at 6pm on a Saturday, not booked there was a big party on but to be fair, the service was great, you would not have know except for the Happy Birthday singing!! Big portions I had piri piri chicken was asked how hot I like it, went for medium, it was lush, 3 x chicken breast will big salad and lots of chips, my hubby had mixed kebab with chips and salad. we loved it and will be back, recommend the Portuguese Beer

Came here for lunch today expecting a standard pub. Good portion size, clearly high quality ingredients used, great flavor. I highly recommend and will definitely come back soon.

Friends recommended this Portuguese restaurant. We went on a Saturday lunchtime when it wasn't busy. We had to wait for ordering our drinks and our orders for food were taken 30 minutes after our arrival. The food arrived 30 minutes later. The quantities were generous but two of our party were disappointed with the quality of their food particularly the vegetables. My main dish of monkfish was not as expected and far too rich in rice.I was looking forward to our visit but left disappointed overall.

Visited on a village festival day. Had the monkfish and rice stew for two. Taking into account that service was more geared up to the village event, a few observations; cutlery brought after the meal was served; stew was was very tasty albeit slightly salty but bubbling hot when brought to the table. Overall a lovely venue, friendly and accommodating staff, tasty food. Will go again to try something else traditionally Portuguese.

Maria’s Kitchen has been recommended by everyone I know who has eaten there, and now I know what they’ve all been raving about.

Car parking is find what you can as no car park in this small picturesque village. Excellent beers blut dont expect sophistication with other drinks. Unhurried choice and serving based on Portuguese food and preparation. Great wine and all at affordable sensible prices.

Another lovely evening spent at Maria’s- I always have the seafood rice which is overflowing with big clams, mussels , huge prawns and a crabs claw in a delicious Portuguese fish stock. My husband loves the squid and prawn skewers served with salad and chips. Custard tarts with cinnamon to finish up with a small glass of Portuguese port. Another stunning meal. Thanks David and Maria.
