An amazing nights sleep before spending a week on the river. A great location, with welcoming and friendly staff. We’ve been before and we will be back.

The outdoor seating has a great view of the river and cute string lights and coloured cushions on the wooden benches. We had a pork belly dish and a vegetarian butternut squash dish and absolutely loved the food and enjoyed the ambiance. I would’ve been happy to go multiple times in our visit

Lovely simple accommodation as part of a cafe/restaurant/canoe hire centre. Design conscious bedrooms with functional en-suite shower/WC facilities. Wonderful and accommodating staff. Brilliant location and relaxed vibe. Rooms 1 -4 all adjacent off a shared landing. Great for families requiring multiple rooms as you are right next to each other. Excellent food - currently being served as takeaway only - but you can grab one of the tables out back overlooking the river which is delightful. Would happily stay again.

Heaven at last - I have long heard good reports about the River Cafe and finally went there on 30th January, not to celebrate Brexit but to have lunch on the way to Hay. We shared squid in batter - Jerusalem artichoke soup and a good sandwich. The soup was terrific in taste and consistency and the squid was very good, as was the sandwich. The dining area was spacious and clean with views across the river Wye. With a couple of glasses of wine the bill was a very reasonable £30. This place is exceptional ani I can’t wait to return.

I booked all the bedrooms and the Bunkhouse for Saturday night. We had drinks in the Bunkhouse, the first two courses of dinner for 23 on one long table in the cafe, then a buffet of puddings, cheese and coffee back in the Bunkhouse. Six of the older guests stayed Friday night as well. Chef Dickie excelled himself with the food, and manager Kasie and owner Jane were endlessly flexible and helpful about everything. The service was friendly, efficient and impeccable, Breakfasts were relaxed, plentiful and excellent. The River Cafe even arranged two days of wonderful sunshine and spectacular sunsets. The Bunkouse with its log stove, slide, pingpong, sofas and luxurious bunks was an ideal venue for three generations of guests. We all had a delightful and memorable party that for some went on till 3am. Nothing seemed too much trouble for the River Cafe team, whom I can't thank enough.

As group of 3 friends we stayed one night in the River Room at the River Café at the end of November, when the Food Festival was on at Hay-on-Wye. The River Room had 4 single beds, in 2 separated rooms, the shower was very big, and the beds were really comfortable. Breakfast was really lovely, and you could choose anything you wanted from the menu, and I struggled to eat it all! Coffee (even freshly brewed cappuccino) was available, and so good that I had another. The views from the bedrooms and restaurant were fantastic, and we saw lots of wildlife. We would have liked a tv as we spent the evening in our room, but this was a minor point. I would definitely recommend the River Café, and we're likely to visit it again!

We visited The River Cafe on a very rainy day. The setting is lovely but of course would have benefited from a little sunshine as the outside seating area is on the riverside and would have been absolutely beautiful. The inside was lovely however and unlike a lot of places it didn't feel like the tables had all been cramped together. We had the soup, mussels in a cider sauce (a surprising and very tasty combination) to start and then we all had the fish and chips after. It was one of the best fish and chips I have ever had and if I was in the area, I would make a point of going back just to eat it again. The chips and batter were crispy, tartar sauce was homemade and it was just delicious. I think one of the things that I thought was especially great was that it was piping hot. A lot of fish and chips go cold quite quickly and you are left with cold fish - not here! It was piping hot all the way until the end (which took a while to get to as it was enormous). I really liked the place - it's the sort of place where you could dress up (ish) for a nice meal out, arrive soaking wet or in shorts and flip flops - whatever you look like, you will be made to feel very welcome. Definitely the place to book in advance and get a reservation though!

Having visited the River Cafe since it opened we chose this place to celebrate my mother’s birthday. Furthermore as Trip Advisor suggests there are Vegan options. Unfortunately there were and are no outright “Vegan” options available other than “wines”. Thus we ended up with olives (have to eat with fingers as no cocktail sticks), bread, seasonal vegetables and a re-hash of their Vegetarian risotto as a dinner which was a half decent recovery.

Outside seating area was beautiful, great view of the river. Breakfast was lovely, lots of options, plenty of locally sourced fruit juices. Staff were very friendly, helpful and did not stop. We had booked and came here for a family lunch x8 on a hot Saturday. Parking was iffy but OK in the end with patience. Nice table outside overlooking the river. It was busy with a larger party and other tables, so we prodded the service as we did not have unlimited time. Having said that, everything turned out well without unreasonable delays. Food quality as expected for a cafe style restaurant. Drinks (beer, wine, soft) all fine and service with a smile from an obviously younger staff on duty. All in all very good

Took the family to this cafe for lunch having heard good things about it. There only appeared to be two high chairs available (both of which we needed) and we had to wait ages for them to be brought over to us. We found menus for ourselves - not a particularly wide choice - then had to wait again for an order to be taken and the waitress insisted on taking a drinks order and then coming back for a food order. The food was very, very slow in appearing and then one part of the order appeared a good five minutes after the rest and, when it did appear, it was wrong. By this time we had two very restless small children so we ordered some ice cream. That took forever to arrive as well. Not at all impressed and really cannot recommend.

I was looking forward to my meal here, heard such good things, however the menu choices were limited, only potato on the menu was mashed(or 'creamed'), and when asked for an alternative such as boiled/chipped was told the chef was unable to do? which didn't feel very hospitable and a little curious as surely potatoes which are creamed begin as whole potatoes? The choices were narrow. So it was a little disappointing! Sorry as I really wanted to enjoy this one.

After strolling around a tired and gloomy looking Hay on Wye we thought we would brighten our day with a spot of lunch. Sadly we remained dispirited. I chose the (£14) Moroccan Tagine. On arrival it did not look promising with some pearl barley on one side of the plate and a pile of "Tagine" mixture on the other. It looked as though it had just been tipped out of a jar. The overall taste was of heat and nothing else. Poor and overpriced. My wife had the "Lunch Box" which was a fussed over ploughmans lunch and once again at £12 not good value. Disappointed to say the least.

Went with my partner and elderly friend before Christmas. Warm welcome and lovely service. We requested a chair with a back for our friend who is not so mobile and hence we were offered a table in the middle of the restaurant with requested chair rather than a bench. The food was delicious, beautiful fish and chips with a superb batter, unfortunately no mushy peas!! The steak sandwich was delicious and a generous portion. It was all fab apart from two minor issues, a) aforementioned mushies and b) sitting at the central table felt a little as though we were in a goldfish bowl, our conversations were being listened to by nosy neighbours. Not anyone’s fault, just closely positioned tables offering a slight invasion of privacy.

Some time later we heard the smoke alarm going off in the kitchen area!! 3/4 minutes later the meal arrived, THREE only chicken nuggets of which one was burnt a dark brown and a very twisted shape,, told the waitrees ( who was very polite) to inform the chef and that I would be ashamed to send that out to a customer, even if it was for a child,,response was a drink on the house, which we declined. My Ceasar salad left a lot to be desired, very limp and far to much lettuce , and overdosed with the dressing,

The Staff were super friendly, service was spot on and the chef clearly knows what they are doing as we had the most amazing food. The breakfast was lovely, first morning I had the English Breakfast which was great and more filling than what it looked (big plates). Second morning I had Salmon and poached egg- I have to say that was even better than the English. We decided to also have dinner there Saturday night since the menu exceeded the expectation of a "Cafe"!! everyone really enjoyed their main course and didn't have anything else since it was very filling. I chose a Cesar salad with Fried Chicken which was very good. The value was great also. I would love to go back when the weather is a bit warmer to eat outside by the river. My wife and I stayed for a long weekend one very hot summer . The cafe had a beautiful position on the river but is quite close to the road . The river cafe serves well prepared and presented food . My wife being given the largest vegetarian breakfast we have ever seen beautifully cooked too. The rooms are pleasant the ones overlooking the river are a little more special. Unfortunately the rooms on the front of the cafe are roadside and opposite a campsite . We were unfortunate enough to have noisy drunken guests at the campsite that made a nights sleep difficult . This problem could easily be solved with air con so on warmer nights you can close the windows . That being said I think we were very unlucky that weekend to get those kind of campers . The cafe is a very nice place to stay and discover this beautiful area . The food is excellent at the cafe if you choose too dine with them for dinner . We found all the staff to be friendly the cook that takes care of breakfast wonderful . I would recommend the river cafe for a stay the river rooms would be my first choice .

The tone of the way we were spoken to happened more than once and has lead me to write this review. I don't recommend this place at all. There are much nicer places in Hay on Wye, Brecon and even Glasbury where people are happy to have you visit and make you feel welcome.

Visiting Glasbury we just wanted a sandwich and a beer at lunchtime, no booking. Swift service, excellent sandwiches and good local beers. Can understand why it's so busy with locals and visitors alike. Hope to be back soon!

Always good food here. Service was excellent and polite and the food superb. Tonight the weather was great so sat out by the river on the excellent balcony area

Visited here today prior to canoeing down the river Wye. The food was excellent and the service was exceptional! Nothing was too much trouble for the young ladies who served us - pleasant, well mannered and very accommodating not only to ourselves but all those around us too! Would highly recommend!

A good location next to the river in Glasbury with lots of outside seating and lovely views out over the river.

We have been visiting the River Cafe regularly over the past three years. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The food is always excellent. We have never ever had a bad meal there and I think we have tried everything off the changing menus. It is one of our favourite places and we hope to continue visiting for many years to come. Thank you to all the friendly staff and particularly thank you to the amazing chef.

It’s about 5 years since we last came and it’s still a really great place. Top class quality food in a stunning setting. A must visit if you are in the area.

Food very mediocre. The service was awful. We were never asked if our food was ok.and the staff who were young girls disappeared. There was nobody around. Very disappointed with my first and only visit. Won’t be returning.

Best Sunday roast dinner I’ve tasted in a very long time ,looked good ,Welsh Lamb and Beef was tender and tasted FANTASTIC ,with lovely traditional vegetables cooked to perfection, what I would describe as real old fashion farm house cooking at it’s best. A credit to kitchen staff and waitresses and to local farmers and suppliers.

Most of the fish & chip shops in Newtown are good.. but I wouldn't go anywhere else but Genie's. Best fish by a mile and chips to match - everything is cooked fresh and portions are just right.

Eat at short notice with family including small children. Amazingly welcoming and brilliant with the children. The food was excellent with superb service and there was a really good choice particularly as some of us are vegetarian. Very good value for money and good beer too.

A pleasant meal with excellent service but very quiet, i suppose thats usually to be expected in January. Probably the nicest salmon we've had with a scrumptious cheese cake to follow and lovely white wine too. Waiter had a good sense of humour and kept us entertained on a quiet night and said "don't forget us on Tripadvisor" so here it is! Quickly cooked and delivered to our table with genuine warmth and a smile. Better than our first visit last summer but we don't like to make a fuss as it seemed full of holiday makers and a little short on waiting staff we hope you enjoyed your after work pint Johnny, Dean and Jenny x

We visited here recently unexpected, we were first to arrive at approximately 5:45. They open at 6,so went in and asked if they would be able to accommodate 2 adults and a toddler (we even said we can sit outside, so the restaurant could be used for other guests).
