We were lucky to get into the Bothy without prebooking for lunch on our way north last Thursday, welcomed with a smile and it was no hassle to organise a table for us which was obviously already a busy lunchtime, the food that was served up was nothing short of superb, carry out of cakes in hand for later we left with a huge smile that set us up for the rest of the day, soo much more than a lunch experience !!! We stopped off here for a cup of tea on a road trip today. A wonderful experience. The café is beautifully presented with tasteful decor and also offers some craft items for sale. The staff ( a mother and daughter team I think) were very personable and chatty. All the food is home made and the cakes and pastries are just superb. The choice of toasties was also unusual and inventive. Mine was roast beef, horseradish, rocket and cheddar. Delish! My wife also loved her soup. Covid measures were very strictly observed and well signed. They have a “traffic light system” to control entry which employs a slate painted red on one side, green on the other. A real gem, and easily the nicest café we’ve visited over the course of a 2 week holiday.

I would like to start by saying that the food would have gained a five star review were it not for the upsetting disregard for safety measures against covid. There was hand sanitizer and clearly a cleaning regime but that was it. The very pleasant staff members were not wearing masks and there was no attempt at social distancing with customers. The vast majority of customers were not wearing masks when circulating and there were no signs to ask them to do so. I understand a small number of people cannot wear masks, however, this was excessive. When it got busy and the weather worsened, the staff shut the door, leaving no ventilation and allowed people to queue inside without masks next to our table. As said at the start of this review, although the food was wonderful, the experience was tainted by feeling upset at a disregard for required covid measures.

We stopped for brunch here at the start of our NC 500 adventure. The staff were organised, and the interior and exterior were set up to manage the vagaries of Covid-19 functioning, with a rustic setting. There was a good choice on the menu. Visited a few days ago. Lovely little place really nicely decorated and adorned with bits and pieces to buy. We were surprised that the staff were not wearing masks or visors at all, and no one else coming in seemed to be either. The food is lovely and good quality although over priced for what you get. £8.50 for a bagel! Overall it came to over £80 for lunch for 4 adults and 2 kids which seems an awful lot to me!!! Surprised they weren’t doing the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme too!

It was a very wet day this morning when feeling a bit dull about heading back home after our NC500 trip, we came across the most amazing hidden gem! When arriving myself and partner were unsure if we’d be able to sit in due to COVID restrictions but the river bothy did not disappoint they are managing things very well. I had the most delicious avocado and mushrooms on scrumptious crusty bread, beautifully presented and my partner had the ‘big breakfast’ which was definitely the biggest we’ve ever seen! Again scrumptious and not one complaint to make, the portion sizes and cost is brilliant and I can assure you that you will not leave hungry! The cakes were mesmerising and we couldn’t resist buying a few to take out, the biscoff cake, strawberry tarts and cabana slice were to die for. The selection of different cakes and bakes was brilliant and the gift shop was great too! Staff were very welcoming and helpful, would highly recommend and will definitely be back if we are up north again.

Visited the River Bothy yesterday just after 2pm on a family day out just looking to get a hot drink and a cake.On arriving at the doorway we were very abruptly intercepted by a woman instantly announcing that they were closed despite signage saying that they were open until 4pm, she then announced that we could get takeaway only but to wait at the door until she said we could come in. At no time did she greet us or welcome us to the establishment or make us feel remotely welcome. We then waited for a good 10 minutes whilst the 3 staff served a family of 4 until it was our turn. We bought 4 cakes at a cost of £14 and made our own tea on Berriedale beach sitting at a bench. The cakes were really disappointing and not very fresh, the Banoffee pie was a bought pastry base with a layer of caramel, banana flavouring and then filled with sugary cream, not a piece of banana in sight, the Victoria Sponge was dry, over sugared and again not very fresh, the Custard Cream was just underwhelming and the Mars and Rice Krispie slice was again dry and not at all freshly made.Shocking experience and dreadful value for money, will not return here on future trips out from Inverness, rubbish!

We hadn't booked when we stopped in for lunch one wet Monday in November, so found all the tables already taken, but we were shown through the back to a table with high stools against the gable wall with views out over the gardens. We ordered the specials (a vegetable soup and a crab sandwich), plus a couple of hot drinks. Despite being pretty well full we hardly had time to take in our surroundings or look at the items on sale, before our order was set at out table. Absolutely no complaints about the food either...really tasty, decent portions, and hot (well, the soup was anyway, not the crab sandwich). We noticed an amazing selection of home made cakes and sweets too, at the counter where we settled the bill, but we had no room.A really cosy place, great atmosphere, and we'll definately be back.

My partner ordered a baguette with smoked salmon. When it arrived, there was no bread on top of the sandwich. The baguette was the end of the bread and was no more than 3 inches long. I'm not exaggerating! My partner paid £9 for this. Thoughly over priced! My sandwich was supposed to consist of sour dough. That's what was described in the menu. Instead, I was given 2 bog standard slices of processed bread. No explanation given by staff. I paid £6.90 for my sandwich, which was of poor quality and way overpriced. Both my partner and I felt like we had been ripped off!Not worth a visit and shall not be returning!

Plenty of parking is available for working off a few calories by crossing the main road down a marked footpath (past the 'no vehicles' sign) through the white gates across a wobbly footbridge to a spectacular beach! Very quick and friendly service in a nice atmosphere. We could not fault the place. we will be going back.

We couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to stop on our trip to the Orkney Islands. The setting is wonderful, the decor modern & tasteful, the staff uber friendly & the food absolutely delicious. It was such a good find that we made sure we stopped at The River Bothy on our way back from the Orkneys!

The River Bothy is a fantastic stop for breakfast, lunch or just coffee and cakes. The warm welcome from the fabulous staff is just the start. The food is the best quality and the baking is to die for. The bothy was a laundry on the estate and many of the original pieces have been kept and if you have any interest the staff are more than willing to guide you with a little history of this unique building.

Despite the North Coast 500 now being a 'thing' rather than just a road, we still find cafes/coffee shops a bit thin on the ground and not always up to our, admittedly 'spoilt metropolitan taste'. However, we spotted this place (only just, the road signs are tiny) and were so glad we did. Very friendly staff, delicious food (too much choice of cake!), excellent coffee. Oh and a chance for a wee bit of (quality) shopping! Perfect.

This is a lovely quirky little tearoom/shop situated just off the A9 at Berriedale. There was a good range of hot and cold light meals on the menu plus a special's board. Service was quick and very friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Home baking was also on view and it looked delicious.

Me and my partner visited the shop at the beginning of walk when up on our honeymoon. After our walk, we thought we deserved some tea and cake so we went back.

We’re frequent travellers to the far north and have seen the river bothy sign many times and after our first visit I wish we hadn’t left it so long. Being gluten free can often lead to being treated like an inconvenience but this couldn’t have been further from the truth at the river bothy. The staff were all so welcoming and the food was fantastic. The best gf toasties we’ve ever had! We can’t wait to visit on our next trip up.

Stopped for coffee and breakfast after camping a few miles along the A9. Great service with good strong coffee and a fantastic cooked breakfast. Selection of cakes was amazing and made choosing which one to takeaway very difficult.
