Some family members and I enjoyed afternoon tea at the Fitzwilliam Hotel restaurant today,so impressed with food especially the vegan option. We were all delighted with the level of service ,in particular Terry and James who attended our table. We have been to quite a few afternoon teas over the years in different hotels but the service and food today has been the best to date, will definitely be back

Food was good , we were really the only ones around at 730 on a Friday night - it felt like the staff kind of forgot about us and I had to go get someone to get my bill after sitting a while with empty glasses. I’m staying at the hotel and thought I would try it out ; but with so many options so close by here ; the service needs to be a bit better .

Very Disappointing. The Hotel was great, but the Restaurant, not so much. Staff very friendly and cheerful, but slow service. Over half an hour to get some bread. I had pan fried trout, which is not difficult to cook. It was the toughest, driest, chewiest, overcooked fish I have ever had. My wife’s lamb was fatty and tough. We heard some guests at the next table saying how poor it was as well. We didn’t go back.

The service was absolutely exceptional. They were extremely attentive, but not overly so. Their timing was perfect and they demonstrated that they cared a lot about our experience. They were especially attentive to food allergies in our party and I would say went above and beyond to accommodate and ensure that we were well taken care of. The food was good, we really enjoyed our meal and dessert. I would say that the food was above average for the fine dining that we have experienced in Ireland, but was not anything that I will be raving about for any period of time. Satisfying and tasty. We also ate here for breakfast as a part of our stay at the hotel. The breakfast was fine, better than some of the hotels we have stayed in, but also a bit hit and miss on some of the items. The service for breakfast was clearly on a different level from the evening dining experience, it wasn't bad, but it was not quite the same exceptional experience we had at night. They were very accommodating again for food allergies and were able to make several of the dishes to work around our needs, which was fantastic.

If this is a Michelin starred restaurant, then I don't want to eat at another. The service was slooooowww. The food was mediocre at best. My chicken was dry. My wife's trout was dry. My daughter's beef tasted like the microwaveable roast beef we get at the grocery in the states. My son's lamb was tepid. Not worth the time nor the money. I wish I had gone for fish n chips.

Our servers were very nice and polite, however the wait time for drinks and food was quite a while. We arrived at 2030, and didn't leave for two hours. I ordered the roast beef with mashed potatoes, and when the food arrived, the meat was dry, and the potatoes were lukewarm at best. Frankly, the microwavable roast beef we can buy at grocery stores in the US is better than what I had here. My mother's fish was dry, my father's chicken was dry, and my brothers lamb was dry and overcooked for his taste. His roast potatoes needed more flavor and we're hot, whereas my mashed potatoes had flavor but were lukewarm. The bread plate was the best part of the meal (in my opinion). I thought Michelin stars were supposed to be the best, but this was not.

The food is reminiscent of 1970s convention fare: bland, basic, boring, overpriced. It felt as if the chef had studied in the 1970s and never moved on from that in menu and presentation. The place was practically empty but still the host told us there would be a 20-minute wait and to go downstairs to the bar. When we said we’d wait, a table miraculously appeared (in the empty dining room). The service was lackluster, the reception area was cluttered with papers, and the menu was hard to figure out, with different choices for theatre, residents on meal plans, and everyone else. Not a good experience. If you’re a guest in the hotel, the room service menu looks better —and cheaper!

Never disappoints... Whether you have time for a leisure meal at the first-floor restaurant or opt for a pre-theatre bar meal, the Fitzwilliam maintains its high standard of service, atmosphere and top-quality food. Our most recent experience saw us greeted, as usual, by welcoming and efficient staff. We chose our food and a glass of wine each from a very comprehensive selection. My cousin & I agreed that our burger meal was the best we had experienced in a long while. A lunch in another hotel three weeks ago had left us distinctly underwhelmed in terms of quality and price.

Having received a voucher for afternoon tea, I booked the Fitzwilliam and added an extra guest. On arrival we were offered Prosecco or a cocktail, this was followed in a while by soup, and savoury items. Our afternoon tea plate arrived with the usual sandwiches, scones and treats, we had to ask were we getting tea/coffee etc - there was no offer of a menu displaying the drinks on offer. I felt very underwhelmed by the 'treat' items we received, they weren't described to us and we had to guess what some were. This isn't a venue I would recommend for afternoon tea.

As guest of the hotel we opted for the 4 course ‘resident dinner offer”. It turns out that the 4 th course is coffee or tea. We had high expectations dining at a 5* hotel but it turn out to be a disappointment. It started with a lack of staff. There were at least 2 waiters and a manager but they didn’t managed only 4 tables. Most of the time no staff was to be seen. We ordered bread and had to request for it cause the staff forget about it. Our bottle of wine was kept at the bar to be chilled, but my empty glass weren’t noticed and all the time I had to wait for the waiters. When It took that long to get my glass filled I requested the bottle to be left at the table. When the waitress brought the bottle sh didn’t pour my glass! I expected much more from a 5* hotel. When finishing our dessert we had to wait a long time to be served. On requesting the bill we were badly surprised that the veggie and the fries they offered with the main dish is £4 each. The bread is also £ 4. The food was okay but the lack of attention of the staff (I did complain at the manager) made our experience bad.

We went here for a pre theatre meal as we had been before and enjoyed it. Don’t know what has happened but it wasn’t good this time. The place was empty but as it was early I wasn’t too worried. Menu arrived after a short wait and i was very disappointed at choices. Very limited but still wasn’t worried. We ordered steak and chicken and waited, and waited and waited. My husband had order the soup as a starter and when it finally arrived the only good thing we could say was that it was hot. No flavour at all. So on the the mains. Potions are very small what i call “mean cuisine” but steak was good as were the chips. The chicken came with some vegetables that i couldn’t identify but i know one of them was a scallion. Full length uncut coated in oil. Chicken was a bit pink but passable. The service was fairly slow for the place to be so quiet and it wasn’t what we would call cheap. Don’t think we will be back. So disappointing.

Surprisingly poor tasting food from this 5-star hotel restaurant. Would expect much better. Much better is available in lots of restaurants in Belfast for the same price or less. Potato and leek soup tasted awful, was watery and did not appear to have any potato in it. Chunky chips were like oven chips you'd make at home. The steaks were ordered medium but came out medium/rare and medium/well-done. The wine was nice - the only thing not made in house by Fitzwilliam chefs. Disappointed.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We're currently staying at the Fitzwilliam Hotel and have enjoyed our stay. Yesterday, we went to get dessert after seeing the restaurant was open until 10 and got turned away at 9:20, which was frustrating but they offered us room service without the tray charge so we weren't particularly annoyed. That room service was very good, nothing life-changing but tasty and what I'd expect for room service on average. Today we decided to go a bit earlier into the restaurant for dinner (we arrived around eight today). We got seated quickly and ordered fairly fast as well. We asked for tap water to drink and a glass of wine, which both came quickly- wine in a glass as expected and water in a large labeled bottle, which we guessed was just recycled or for decoration- as we asked for tap water. Tap water is free. Surely our waitress didn't deny us some free water to try and sneak in an extra charge, right? In hindsight, we should have asked then and there if it was tap water, but it just seemed odd that it wouldn't be when we specified multiple times. Anyway, our food took quite a while- not the worst, but fairly slow. When it arrived, the chicken looked like a perfectly hearty portion, while the vegetarian gnocchi I ordered consisted of a small pile of spinach, some peas and either edamame or lima beans- I'm not a bean expert- and five pieces of gnocchi. Five. I will repeat for you- five pieces on what was listed as an entree. I was given a small pile of vegetables and five gnocchi bites as a meal. I was kind of shocked, especially as this cost almost twenty pounds. It was very tasty and if they doubled the portion size, I would love it. I feel the need to mention here I am a fairly small teenage girl who can almost never finish a plate of restaurant food because I often feel the portions are just too big, so I do not think I'm unfairly judging the portion size here. We finished our food pretty quickly, and then decided we would ask for a dessert menu because I was still so hungry, and what can go wrong with dessert? We waited a while to collect our plates and then ordered dessert, again fairly quickly. Now began the wait. I'd say we waited at least half an hour- maybe more- for our dessert to arrive. During this time, a couple seated two seats away from us got their desserts and as soon as the waiter left began laughing hysterically. We noticed they ordered the same thing as us, and it looked comically small. The couple next to us asked them what was up (in so many words) and while still giggling they mentioned how small the portions were. They really were tiny. The chocolate ganache was a spoonful of ganache with three little chocolate things, and the "compressed pear" was maybe five shavings of pear with a spoonful of rhubarb sorbet and various garnishes on each. I will mention this couple got their desserts after we had ordered ours, and left, having finished and paid, right after we got ours- I noticed they had a different waiter than us. We finished our desserts quickly- given how small they were and how hungry I was, that made perfect sense- and then began waiting once more for our plates to be collected and for us to get the bill. After quite a while, we got our bill and noticed we were charged 5.10 for a bottle of water which we didn't order- we did ask for tap water, as I said earlier. I didn't feel comfortable complaining but once we returned to our room I got filled with such a sense of injustice that I decided to write my first TripAdvisor review. I'm not normally the type to complain about service- I sympathize with those in the service industry and I often give them the benefit of the doubt. But my mom said it was probably some of the worst service she had ever experienced, which did convince me to write up a review. We arrived at eight for dinner and managed to get out at around 10:25- two and a half hours for dinner. At most restaurants, I think our meal would have taken an hour, hour and a half max. I hope this review helps to improve service at the restaurant- and maybe add some more food to the plates, particularly those for vegetarians? We may not eat meat, but not all of us like rabbit food. Another thing I noticed- if you are vegan, don't come here. The vegetarian starter option is goat's cheese, and the gnocchi I had also had goat's cheese. I might have been wrong, but I think all the desserts also had dairy.

I’d just like to commend Anna and the team for what is surely the best breakfast in Belfast. Everything is locally sourced and presented in a way that the various nearby hotels could learn much from naming no names. I live in Belfast but my colleague stays in hotels regularly on Great Victoria Street due to his job - and the Fitzwilliam is most definitely the best for breakfast by a country mile. Anna explained to us how important local ingredients are to the hotel’s ethos and this should be applauded - it definitely shows. They also accept walk in guests for breakfast which is definitely worth broadcasting- served till 11 on a Saturday and Sunday.Top marks all round

Booked the Restaurant at the Fitzwilliam Hotel for the first time to have a meal before our Friday night at the Grand Opera House to see Oliver! The quality of the menu and presentation of the dishes was outstanding fine dining, but all for a very good value price of 3 courses for only £21 per person. The staff were very friendly and attentive, especially with my dad who has difficult mobility. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the dishes arrived quickly but with perfect execution. I would recommend the Fitzwilliam to anyone looking for a great meal before a nite out in Belfast, you won't get better quality, better service or better value anywhere else :)Many thanks again to the hard-working staff! :)

Opted for the pre theatre menu, 2 courses and 1 glass of wine came to close to £30, not a problem if the food was amazing, but there was nothing special about it, the salmon starter had very crunchy, what seemed like gravel on it, and the beef was very chewy in places, as was the stringy veg.I ate with only 1 other couple in the entire restaurant, so when they finished their meal there was no atmosphere, staff were very friendly though, but not enough to bring me back for another try anytime soon. There are other options in Belfast, some of the pub options would have been a better choice for something tastier and better value, if looking something fine dining there are also better places in Belfast.

Went for the pre theatre menu- the salmon gravlax was very good, and the prawns too. The mains really stood out: the beef and dauphinois potatoes was amazing, as as the pork belly and black pudding mash (not fatty at all). We opted for the dessert of rhubarb crumble too, which was lovely. The only point to nick-pick was the water order: the waiter kept on bringing little bottles of still water rather than a bigger bottle, slightly pointless because we had to order two little bottles. Intimate and pleasant ambience.

Nice looking restaurant with some nice service but...........The food was good but the service was spotty at best. When room temperature white wine arrived it was not necessary to receive a lecture on the proper temperature of white wine. He was clueless. Not one server knew who had ordered what. Sad !

very disappointing food. went for a pre opera with a friend. we both had the soufflé which was really anything like what a soufflé should be: it was stoggy and indigestible.Second course was not much better: her belly of pork was simply FAT and nothing else, my chicken was at least edible.Desserrt: lemon drizzle extremely stoggy.Never again. the only nice things in the menu were the three tiny slices of pickled veggies with the starter and the lemon sorbet. Avoid!

My recent visit found a vast improvement in both service and food after a bad experience in March which I reviewed.(Truly Memorable - for all the wrong reasons.)On this occasion the service was outstanding and there was nothing at all to fault. On a Tuesday night the restaurant was less busy than on my March visit and there seemed to be more staff who were particularly attentive and obviously knew their job and did it. Courses appeared without any delay and the food not only looked very attractive but tasted pretty good too. Portion sizes were good and I can certainly recommend the cheese souffle starter. If the Fitzwilliam keeps up this good service and quality of food diners will be happy to eat there. I certainly would

Visited the Fitzwilliam to sample the pre theatre menu and we were not disappointed. We both ordered the daube of beef and it was just delicious. It had been carefully slowcooked, served with dauphinois potato, spring greens and onion sauce - mouthwatering. We followed it with tiramisu. The meal was good value for a hotel of this standard. Service was great. We will return.

I foned up the same morning I wanted to take mum out a surprise afternoon tea and after checking with the kitchen they said this would not be a problem. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and attentive. My brother dropped in for a catch up and to help us with the feast in front of us - they brought him an extra plate and cup! All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon and would recommend to all. The only small complaint I would have is that if you are paying by card you are not given the option to add a tip (I had no cash so felt like a real scrooge!)

Seven of us went here on Sat for a pre Mothers day afternoon tea the food was delicious as was the cocktails lol but the service was disappointing we ordered cocktails and prosecco when we arrived as this was included in our price, the food arrived shortly after but no sign of anyone to take an order for tea we had to wait until a waiter was passing to ask for the tea he told us seeing we had our cocktails he didn't think we would want our tea right away I thought that strange as I don't normally eat sandwiches scones and pastries with a cocktail! We also had to wait on someone passing to get fresh cream & jam for our scones, to top it off we had to wait on someone passing to ask for more tea! As I said the food was delicious and I'm hoping this was a one off.

I attended a dinner arranged for my twin sons' fortieth birthday. There were thirty two guests in total and a section of the restaurant had been reserved for our exclusive use. At first all went well. We were received in the bar where the waiter who had been assigned to our group was attentive and efficient: drink orders were taken immediately and drinks arrived promptly. The 'musak' in the bar was too loud but this was only a minor detail. The meal had been timed for 8:00 pm but we were not called to the restaurant until 8:40 pm and it all went downhill from there. On arrival in the restaurant I asked if there was anywhere to hang coats and was told not to worry as the staff would come and take the coats to hang them up. No. They didn't. I asked a different staff member the same thing about 30 minutes later and was told he would come and take my coat and hang it in the large cupboard they had for this purpose. No. He didn't either, so everyone was left with coats hanging on the back of their chairs, which didn't add much elegance to the room. The menu, sitting on each place setting when we arrived was, to all intents and purposes, the same as the pre-theatre menu, and was three courses of starter, mains and dessert with tea or coffee to follow. There was a choice of three items under each heading. Starters and desserts were obviously chosen so that they could be cooked in advance and simply placed on plates when ordered. We waited. We continued to wait. Staff walked up and down to two other sections of the restaurant. We continued to wait. No one approached to ask if we would like a drink. One guest at our table left it twice to ask for a wine list and - nothing happened. Eventually after one of the more senior waitresses was approached wine lists finally appeared and drink orders were taken. As a driver I had only water to drink. (Bear this in mind for later developments). One of my sons, sitting opposite me, ordered a bottle of white wine. An ice bucket was brought to the end of the table, the bottle of wine was plonked, unopened, on the table and the waitress walked away. We waited again. After about another half an hour the starters finally appeared. I had ordered trout and all four square inches of it arrived on a beautifully decorated plate. While I was more than underwhelmed by the amount of food, I was even more underwhelmed by the fact that it was still raw in the middle and had to be sent back. While profuse apologies were given, nothing was offered in its place and I asked if I could have ham hock instead. This was brought quite quickly, although by this stage it was 9:40 pm a full hour and forty minutes after the meal was supposed to have started. After another wait a trickle of main courses began to appear. One guest at our table had almost finished his meal by the time others were served. My order of chicken didn't arrive although everyone else in our section of the restaurant was served. I was asked twice what I was waiting for, the waitresses in question went off and didn't return. Everyone else had almost finished their meal and still I waited. Eventually, at 10:10 pm, two hours after the meal was supposed to have started, I decided that enough was enough and left the table in search of staff who, at this stage, had all disappeared. I met the more senior waitress on my way to the kitchen.and asked if I was ever going to be fed. She was the recipient of my opinion of the restaurant and I told her I would never visit the the hotel again or recommend the restaurant to anyone. At this point the 'manager' came out of the kitchen to assure me that he would bring my meal immediately and that there was no need to raise my voice. This was because the confrontation was taking place where other diners could hear. If I had raised my voice I would have been heard across the street!! No apology for the long delay. He was then told that my starter of trout had arrived raw and had to be sent back.My chicken arrived within a few minutes but fine dining it was not. Again the plate looked beautiful but the chicken had obviously been cooked earlier and reheated, as it was dry and tasteless. The green vegetable had mushy heads and hard inedible stalks and the meal portion was very small.Believe it or not I was one of the first served dessert. I wonder why? My lemon drizzle cake was a a large slice of cake soaked in syrup with one blackberry and one raspberry and a small scoop of sorbet. While it was pleasant enough there was no flavour of lemon from the cake. The last straw was the bill. The meal was priced at £30 per head. As a driver, I had drunk nothing but water although others at the tables had ordered bottles of wine, beer etc. The staff had been told, when arrangements for the meal were being made, that drinks ordered at the tables were to be paid for by those ordering them. No payments had been taken and the result was a collective bill. The organiser was told that as the service had been poor, (probably as a result of my complaint), that a 50% discount was being given and the resultant bill was £40 per head. Rather than create a second scene I paid £30 for a very poor meal and contributed £10 to all those who had ordered alcohol. Not fair - but again the fault of the staff. I have eaten meals in restaurants all over Europe, the Middle East and parts of the Far East and Africa but have rarely experienced such poor service or mediocre food.I think that much of the problem was caused by untrained staff who didn't really know what they should have been doing, a lack of any sort of system, and a kitchen more concerned with the appearance of the food than the quality. Quote from the Hotel website: "This is all about flavour and redefines casual dining. The result is, well, astonishing."It certainly did redefine casual dining and the result was indeed astonishing. It was so astonishing that I'll never darken the doors of that particular restaurant again.
