Only given 4 stars because the cafe is expensive. Friday and Saturday evening live music, and more. There's a piano in the cafe tho it can't be used when dining space needed - it's played in the evenings at w/ends etc.

Stopped off here for lunch whilst on the Orkney coach tour. It was the closest eaterie we could find to the bus station as we were on a time limit. The wife went away to see the cathedral and left me to lunch. I had a blackcurrant and water and managed to get a seat although it was very busy. I ordered a soup and a cheese and onion toastie. The soup had a homemade flavour and came out piping hot just as I like it. I only had time to eat half my toastie as the wife returned to tell me it was time to go back for our bus. I ate the other half on the way back to the bus. It had a generous filling and was still warm. Would recommend the reel to anyone and would go there again.

We ordered the nachos as there was very little to choose from. Apparently you can only have 1x nachos for 2 people at a time. When they came out they were gross! The service was poor at best, and no one clears your plates or says anything to you as you leave, let alone checking your meal was ok. There have to be better places to eat, choose anywhere.

We heard that the Orkney Accordion and Fiddle Club was meeting at The Reel for a practice session that was open to the public. We slipped in when the doors opened at 7:30 PM and even got one of only a handful of tables. The barmaid was charming and made us some nice coffees. And then the music started! The Orkney Accordion and Fiddle Club has been meeting since the 1970s, a wide range of ages, from young teenagers to wizened old men. They are led by a fiddle master with a wonderful beard and smiling eyes. And then the launched into their first tune, a reel, and the place was transported back in time. They played beautifully, simply, and from the heart. Waltzes followed reels, and were followed by other tunes. And they weren't all old tunes. The master commented that the next one was written to commemorate the terrorist attacks of 9/11 -- it was a lament in a mostly minor key, and was obviously written more recently, yet it, too, had its roots in traditional Orcadian music. It was a great evening, and not somewhere you might know about. But find out what club is practicing at The Reel and go have the total musical experience the soul craves.

Had a large coffee that I personally found was on the weak side and will ask for an extra shot next time. It was busy (lunch time) and it can be hard to find a table that isn’t cramped by other users pushing their chairs back as the tables are fixed to the floor and leaves you little room in between. Amongst all the food and coffee shops in Orkney this one offers a bit more, tradition and some ‘reel’ home cooking. Firstly, food is nearly all made on the premises. The scones came out of the oven as we waited and were delicious. If you go in certain evenings you can catch some reel Orcadian music. It’s also home to the a traditional Scottish music school. We popped in one evening for the Slow session (apparently a night for those who are not super experienced to learn). On Wednesday the local experts come out to play and you can have a drink at the bar and enjoy the music (well worth a stop as a tourist). They have a list on the tables of the different music nights etc. Lunch offers many sandwich, soup, baked potato etc options but they also try to use local ingredients like Orkney cheddar where possible. It may not be the cheapest on the street but you sometimes have to pay a little for the time, effort and expertise of those making the scones and cakes!
