Met friends for lunch at 1.15. Was served by the rudest waitress who seemed very annoyed when we weren’t ready to order 2 minutes after arriving and promptly ignored us for ages. We had someone else come over eventually to take the order and waited for ages for our meal - eventually eating after 2.45! I have gestational diabetes and had a hypo waiting so long - lesson to always take a snack with me but I just didn’t expect a wait this long to eat! My husband and I both ordered the moving mountain burgers but mine with cheddar cheese and non-vegan mayo - to help pair my meal (eating with GD is a nightmare). When they arrived, one was without cheese all together and when querying whether the one with cheese was vegan cheese or cheddar cheese the surley waitress replied “I don’t know what you ordered” in an incredible unhelpful and rude way. After a couple of minutes silence just staring at us she plopped down the plates and I took a gamble on the the cheese one while the husband went without. No idea if the mayo was vegan or not so I left it. Thankfully we had a very nice waitress serve us for the rest of the meal but honestly, no one should expect to have such slow and rude service - especially when the pub was not that busy. I would not go back despite the food being ok and the location really pretty. I waitresses for many years, it’s really not that hard to muster some politeness. I’d highly recommend this server find a job that makes her less miserable.

The service here was very slow and very rude. We stopped in during a country walk but were met by a rude barmaid who barely acknowledged us and left us waiting half an hour to be served.

Lovely Sunday roast - finally somewhere where they ask you how you like your beef! Beautifully rare beef, masses of veg (including cauliflower cheese), cosy atmosphere, friendly staff. Great beer selection. Have booked to come back for steak night on Tuesday, can’t wait! A must try if you’re in the area.

We wanted to meet up again with friends in August and until then we had been going for walks around the National Trust gardens. But the weather had turned cold and wet so we thought we may try a country pub for lunch. The reviews for The Red Lion are so good on TripAdviser that we decided to go there. I booked a table a couple of weeks in advance. Due to limited seating capacity to enable social distancing we were very lucky to get a table. We were greeted by a nice friendly lady who showed us to our table which was in a separate room in the pub. Only one other table, for six, was in the same room. We had paper menus, which is the most sensible option during this crisis. The choices were good, with specials on the blackboard. We had booked our table for 12.00 o’clock and we were not hurried to leave. The food was first class and reasonably priced. We even benefitted from the Eat out to Help out offer, which was a bonus. All the staff worked very hard and with a smile and sense of humour. We would definitely go back there again.

Stopped in for lunch after a walk to black down from camping at @NightPastures campsite. The only drawback being there could have been a couple more menu options but what there was was great, all reasonably priced and good quality.I had some nachos with a Cajun chicken sandwich and fries. The fries were perfect. Chicken nicely cooked and the homemade salsa for the nachos was really tasty. My girlfriend has a jacket which was great too.Best thing about this place is the pub garden which is about so pretty. Lots of flowers, nicely space tables but close enough to keep a nice atmosphere. Really pretty and feels secluded.Great staff too who were all friendly with all of the customers. Lovely place.

We had a great time at the Red Lion this Sunday. The decor is really old worldly and lovely with big open fires and friendly staff. Between us we tried the traditional Sunday roast which was described as magnificently succulent. The best roast our friend had in ages. He spoke to the chef and said he would return. 2 of our party had the moving mountains burger. They said it had nice salsa, a good array of toppings and was delicious. I had the beetroot bourginon which was a great alternative to a Sunday roast, was very good and I would definitely have it again. Many thanks to the friendly staff and the special visit from the chef at the end! Next time we would love to see a vegan roast on the menu! Also more vegan desert options.

Told booked up but we were there for 12 --beginning of Sunday roast service-- there were tables reserved for 1pm and 1.30 pm-- we would've been finished by 12 .20! DOUBLY RIDICULOUS --I was told we could have food served to the garden but NOT Sunday Roast!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also had it not been sunny and warm, we would not have been able to sit anywhere inside (well, there WERE 3 bar stools, all taken !) as it was all taken up with reserved dining tables--as it's a PUB, surely part of it should accommodate those not eating? We left very disappointed as it was my daughter's birthday and we had eaten here on a previous visit and the food had been very good.We WON'T return to the Red Lion. We found The Mill at Shottermill--and had an excellent Sunday Roast lunch--great food--AND very friendly and accommodating at The Mill, and will go there again on our next visit.

8 of us went for dinner at The Red Lion on 27 September to celebrate a very special persons 81 birthday. We were given a private room just off the main bar. The table was beautifully laid with a tablecloth, flowers and candles. We were personally greeted by the owner and chef, Julian and his lovely wife Adele. We had a selection of main courses, including fish and chips, scampi and my favourite, rack of lamb with garlic mash - divine! Without exception, every plate was finished and everybody was really happy with their food. We also had extremely generous cheese boards, and a cheese board with melted Camembert. Delicious! Several puddings were chosen and everyone cleared their plates. We were superbly looked after by Sue and Donna. All of us are coming back for a Sunday lunch in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait! My husband and I suddenly finding ourself without kids, booked for supper at The Red Lion which is on the green in Fernhurst. There is a good choice of food but both of us were drawn to the locally sourced rump of lamb with garlic mash, steamed tender stem broccoli and a rosemary jus. OMG, it was soooooo delicious. The mash was perfect with just the right amount of garlic, (ie you won’t cover your mouth the next day if you meet a friend!), the broccoli was cooked to perfection, just the right amount of “bite”, (just how we like it), there was also herb butter on the beautifully cooked and tender lamb - I could have eaten another serving, it was that good... ! But that would have been greedy and I was full anyway, I can’t wait to go back and eat there again. Should also mention that the pub is next to Fernhurst cricket club and the pub was full of local people including the cricket club folk. Everyone was so friendly, this is a “proper” village pub, the staff are lovely especially Donna and Sue who were there tonight. They both made us feel that nothing was too much to ask for even though the pub was full of people. They made us feel special because we were so well looked after. Even though the pub was busy, they were both so friendly and attentive. Also, a very nice touch was that the owner, Julian actually took the time to come out and ask us if everything was ok, believe me it was! Gosh, since Julian has come back to run The Red Lion in Fernhurst, this pub has been transformed into somewhere you know will have great food, a great atmosphere and a friendly front of house. It’s so lovely to see it so busy now. Sadly it did lose its way a bit before, especially re quality of the food, but over recent weeks things have significantly improved since the new ownership. We had the Goats cheese salad yesterday and honeycomb cheesecake for pudding which was just divine. Julian was also a great host, flicking between managing the kitchen and checking on his guests - which I just love in a pub. Sue, the new lad (sorry I don’t know his name) and Keera (I think that’s her name?) were very friendly too, and the food was beautifully presented. Sitting outside in their pretty pub garden in the sunshine was an absolute joy. See you again very soon.

The steak, medium rare, was perfectly cooked, with roasted tomatoes, peas and delicious chips, which I assume were triple cooked. They don’t brag. Popped in for lunch and relieved to see that they were still serving food at 2.30. Good beer, great service and great food.

Having read the disappointing reviews on Tripadvisor for the Red Lion we were excited to hear that the pub is now under new management and Julian and his team are doing a fantastic job restoring the reputation and quality that this pub has always been known for. The warm and welcoming atmosphere is back, the food is delicious and reasonably priced I would urge anybody that has posted a disappointing experience in the Red Lion to go back you won't be disappointed! Well done guys.

We have eaten here many times and it never disappoints. Today we went as a group of 16 and, even though the pub was packed, we have great service. The roasts are amazing.

I booked for a group of 8 for a late lunch. We were allocated a table in a separate area which was great. It gave us some privacy and extra space too. The menu has several options for starters mains and dessert and it is a fixed priced for whether you choose to have main course only course £14.95 of two courses £19.95 or three courses a bit more but not sure what this was as no one ordered it. I thought the cost of scampi and chips , fish and chips and a burger and chips for £14.95 was too high. None came with a decent salad only a salad garnish of romaine lettuce which was left se who ordered those mains. The roast options were better value coming with either ordinary roast potatoes or garlic roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding and the meat of your choice. The roast option came with a selection of vegetables. This was very disappointing as they were only steamed and the cauliflower was undercooked and very hard. This meal could have been improved with roasted vegetables parsnips peppers cauliflower cheese or spiced red cabbage.

Being local and having had good experiences on four occasions over the past two years I booked a week ahead for Sunday lunch for four people. Very limited menu and admittedly it was very busy but either a pub can cope or not!

We had lunch here with elderly parents. The pub is welcoming and obviously popular especially with dog walkers . Our food was all very good, and good value for money too. Our two course lunch for four with tip came to £80. For main course we had the fish and chips, the salmon fillet and the pie(pork sage and mushroom) which was delicious but my goodness was it a generous portion! Ideal for hungry walkers ! My elderly mother took half of hers home - all parcelled up for her without a murmur. We were all too full for anything other than ice-cream for dessert , also generous in size. The waitress was very pleasant and helpful. We will return.

We turned up at 2pm on Sunday for lunch. Stood in a queue for 20 mins with only one pair at the bar messing about with their order. A group of walkers in front of us desperate to lay and leave the pub and myself and family behind. Young short girl running around serving food and rushed. I asked her “excuse me, I know you’re busy” to ask her to clear the messy table we had just sat at and she snapped rudely “I am not doing anything!!!” - I looked and my wife and said, “we are leaving this pub”. The food has gone down hill but this pure rudeness by this young women sent us on our feet where we are now sitting in a nice place ‘The White Horse’ in Haslemere which is run nice and the staff are friendly. Never will I go back to the Red Lion, which is a shame as the building is nice and it’s a nice village.

Two good friends travelled a distance to see me and wanted to go somewhere for lunch. I hadn't eaten at the Red Lion for some time as I had heard it had gone downhill but thought I would give it a try. However it was very disappointing for the price. My meal was actually awful and I couldn't eat the main part of the dish which was a pasta loaf and the vegetables were soggy and tasteless.Normally I would complain or send it back but didn't want to make a fuss as my friends were with me.The lady serving the food disappeared for a long time and the lady from behind the bar had to come and take our empty plates, serve the drinks and find the desert menu which, incidentally, was the smallest desert menu I had ever come across. I love my deserts so made a small request to change my desert slightly but the message from the kitchen was no, I had to have it as per the menu. The staff are very friendly but the service is all a bit chaotic . We paid the bill which was high for the standard of food and as we were leaving we were called back by the bar staff and said they had under charged us. However it turned out that someone elses bottle of wine had been added to our bill by mistake. I would not eat there again.

We arrived for Sunday lunch. Service was friendly and prompt and the menu was wide enough to ensure we could each order something we liked. The food, when it was served, was certainly above average and I would rate it above the Wheatsheef, above the Mill but below the Prince of Wales. At the end, none of us said that was a great meal and we must come back here again. The feeling was one of it being a little above average.

A very attractive pub in a lovely setting. The food has gone downhill recently and unfortunately the landlord is a racist who makes it clear people of colour are not welcome..
