We happened upon The Red Lion in Thornby after exploring Northamptonshire by car!The food was outstanding. My partner had the steak, ale and Stilton pie with hand cut chips and seasonal green veg! It was the best pie both of us has ever tasted and the filling was so well seasoned! I had the chicken schnitzel with romanesco sauce. Another fantastic dish! For dessert we both had the bannoffee tart which was out of this world!! We will definitely be coming back! Lovely atmosphere in the pub as well.

Been here a number of times. It never disappoints. Great village pub. Full of locals drinking and eating the great, unpretentious but excellently cooked food. Great service. Travelled from Stafford for my Sunday lunch and would do it again. Wish it was my 'Local'

We came off the A14 after Google maps recommended it. It's a great little find. Not at all pub grub. We arrived at 2 minutes to 2pm and good finished at 2. They accepted is. We ordered two Bouillabaisse and it was excellent. The Rouille was delicious and authentic, fish perfectly cooking and had samphire, mussels etc in a lovely broth. Really well prepared and presented and the service was friendly and efficient. Excellent

We had a lovely meal here, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly yet professional. The food is excellent with an imaginative menu using local ingredients that are beautifully cooked and prepared. It isn’t a gastro pub so retains the feel of a village local. Highly recommended.

My wife and I were on a pilgrimage to Thornby to visit the village where my mother's mother's family lived in the first half of the nineteenth century. The pub and the church were the two musts for the visit. The Red Lion was really friendly, with great service and the food was way better than I would have expected from a small village pub. My wife raved about her parsnip and apple soup - excellent preparation, presentation and taste. I had no more than a simple burger but that was well presented with really tasty homemade coleslaw. All good value for money. Proud to have traced my roots back to Thornby and to have been made to feel welcome.

The most impressive thing about The Red Lion at Thornby was just how outstanding their service is.We visited earlier today and were both quickly seated.I ordered a couple of pints of BG sips, an outstanding pale ale whilst my wife ordered a pint of coke.We skipped straight to the main dish and I ordered a steak which came with chips and a few tomatoes and peppercorn sauce which although was a little underwhelming, was cleared and enjoyed. My wife ordered the burger meal which she enjoyed but due to an accident the waitress removed the cost of the burger meal. This is a lovely little pub with accommodation at the side and a beautiful little " hidden away " garden to the side of the car park.We were fairly happy with our visit and the waitress ( we believe is American) is an absolute credit to her job as well as the Red lion.Visited 18th May 2021.Please support our excellent pubs.

Booked here for lunch after looking at the reviews and was not disappointed. I had the beef cheek bon bons to start, which were amazingly tender and so full of beef flavour. Followed by the pork and black pudding wellington. I cannot recommend this enough, tender pork loin with so much flavour from the bacon and black pudding. Kale and carrots cooked and seasoned perfectly, with the best dauphinois I’ve eaten outside of France. Strawberry mille feuille, was a perfect light end to the meal with compliments of basil and elderflower. Staff were fantastic and it was a very safe environment. If you have the chance, definitely drop in!

As with most pubs, the Red Lion has only recently re-opened and had made great efforts to protect their customers with one way traffic and table service. The staff and owners were very welcoming and clearly on top of their game. The real ales were very well kept and presented. It is the food however that sets this pub apart from most.Gastro-pub us a very overworked cliche and not always earned but this term understates the quality and skill if the food on offer.I had the monkfish with braised leeks and a potato fondant, with delicious sauces to complement the firm, tasty fish. The desert a strawberry fuille? was quite superb and the general standard of the menu was clearly a furlong ahead of the usual pub fare.A thoroughly pleasant experience that I hope to repeat.

A most delightful pub / diner with near perfect ambiance. Ten out of ten for for every thing except the fish pie, which the menu described as containing prawns, smoked haddock, hake and cod.......but what a disappointment. Firstly it was too hot to eat out of the dish ( micro wave ), so I transferred the contents to my plate expecting to find whole prawns and good flakes of the other fish. But no !!.... the prawns and the other fish had been cut up into unrecognisable small pieces and surrounded by a weak milky liquid.

On a trip to Leicester, my wife and I decided to come off the A14 to look for lunch. We took a wrong turning, and the first pub we came to was the Red Lion in Thornby. 8 of us has booked the week before for a sit down meal at 1430hrs. Our table was occupied at 1430 hrs, by the time we actually got seated it was approximately 1450hrs. We did not realise the only menu in operation was the Sunday Lunch menu. The vegetarian options was one plus a veggie burger (Sunday Lunch?), however there was no veggie burgers after we had ordered. The fish dish was not available which left fish and chips (for Sunday lunch?). We were offered an alternative vegetarion option of the roast with vegetables and veggie gravy, the young girl then said the roasties were cooked in beef fat. There was 2 main courses, beef or Pork, several ordered both, then after ordering again there was no beef. We ordered wine which after 20 minutes had not arrived, we had to ask for it. Eventually we had our food. When the bill came there were a lot of items with no details just a value. We then asked why we had been charged for a roast beef which no one had. We were advised this was for the vegetarian meal, ( which was veggies only)? The roasts could not be had so were replaced with dauphinoise potatoes, this was the reason why were were charged £12.50 which was the price of the roast beef which was more expensive than the roast pork, even so you do not pay the same price for vegetables as a full roast dinner. It was sorted, the food was delicious which was a shame because everything else was shambolic, so we will not be going again, 8 unhappy customers???

This was a family get together, one couple local and two couples from out of the area. We arrived on time and the reserved table was awaiting us in a very pleasant area with a log fire burning. Drinks arrived fairly quickly as did the menus. Three of us chose starters, all different from the short but varied menu, and we had five different lunches. After the starters had arrived and been eaten, there was a long wait before the main courses arrived, but all the food was clearly fresh cooked and very good. They brought extra drinks to order- we did not need to visit the bar. Three of us had desserts for which there was also a slightly longer wait than might be expected, but again quality was served. The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and it was a very pleasant way to spend most of the afternoon. The bill was very reasonable for the food and drinks we had and we would recommend the place as long as you are not in a hurry!

This was our first visit. On arriving for lunch at 12.30 on a Wednesday the car park was already full. Certainly we were glad that we had booked a table. The table service was good even in the bar which we understandably needed to sit in as we had a dog with us. We asked to share a pate and toast starter between two. We were only given one plate which was fine but the starter was disappointing. 3 half triangles of toast which were significantly burnt. We tried eating it but the burnt taste overrode the taste of the pate. We asked for more toast which also turned up partially burnt!

We ordered the Steak and Stilton pie, the pork chop with blackpudding mash and a kids sausage and chips. We had to wait about 25 minutes but it was worth it, the food was freshly cooked, the pie was very deep and very golden. We visit the Red Lion as a couple, together with friends or occasionally separately with a friend about once a month or so. This most recent visit was with two friends early on a Friday evening. The pub was busy (it always is) and we were shown to a table by a window in the Dining area. We liked the look of the puddings so didn't have a starter and ordered mains and puddings. Drinks came quickly and we waited a reasonable time for our main courses. I ordered a brisket of beef dish, my friend fish and our husbands a pan roasted chicken meal each. My plate had dried out, the purée was almost dried onto the plate and the beef whilst tasty appeared to have dried out on the outside because of being kept warm , perhaps. I was disappointed as the food is usually very good. My husband was underwhelmed by his chicken too. For dessert 3 of us had the Rhubarb Trifle which came very nicely presented in mini kilner pots, sadly the rhubarb was a bit too tart and set which spoiled the usual sweet and slightly runny consistency of an English trifle. Service was good but the food disappointing after many satisfying visits. Perhaps the chef was on an evening off but my husband has already said he wants to go to some other pubs for meals now as he felt the standards had slipped.

I booked this restaurant for a Friday evening two weeks earlier for 3 people. The booking was taken by Joe.The dining room is a lovely, traditional old pub room and the table are of a good size and well spaced. The service was excellent, Joe, Graham and Charlotte were very pleasant and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The menu is short for each course but it is one of those menus where you are spoiled for choice for there was nothing that we would not have chosen. The pricing is very reasonable, the quality of the produce superb and we will certainly be eating there again.Well done to the owners and their great staff.

Cannot fault the Red Lion. The food and service on a busy Mothers Day was second to none. The special menu had a great choice. Everything was excellent. We will definitely visit again even though we are not local

Prima hier gegeten, kwaliteit is uitstekend en m.n. de " Steak and Ale Pie" zag er zeer goed uit. Risotto was zeer smakelijk, groentes waren vers.

We have just been for supper this evening with friends, for my husband's birthday and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The bar is cosy, warm and welcoming, with a lovely fire and the fact that it is full of locals creates a good ambience. Our table in the restaurant was quite close to the bar area, which was buzzing and we enjoyed the lively atmosphere. Don't be put off by the rather "tired" furniture because the food is great! The menu is interesting, with a good balance of meat, fish and vegetarian options. My husband chose the scallops with curried Dahl, onion Bhaji and coriander, followed by the battered fish of the day - haddock. The scallops were a delicious and unusual combination and the haddock was beautifully cooked and substantial! I chose the goats cheese mousse, which was beautifully light and tasty, followed by the wild mushroom risotto - superb! No room for puds! The "front of house" and, in fact, all the staff were friendly, efficient and could not be faulted. We came away thoroughly satisfied!

The chef obviously loves what he's doing and cares what goes on your plate. Pork loin was succulent and crackling perfect. Yorkshires we're so good would love to know exact measurements as these we're perfect too. Great fresh apple sauce. The only slight thing that let the meal down was the potatoes. They were crispy but I prefer them to be fluffier on the inside and the veg was a bit simple. The desert of ginger cake, rhubarb, creme anglais and (made on site I think) ice cream was Michelin star quality. A great little pub that's suitable for all.

Thought we would book for New Year's Day as recommended by friends. Restaurant was quite busy and the bar even busier but the service was good. The usual roasts were on the menu plus other options;food was good but expensive compared to other local eateries and our table was in the walk way of the servers going back and forward.

We had lunch here today and the freshly cooked food was superb. The staff was very friendly and proficient and everywhere was spotlessly clean. There was a good menu and I would certainly recommend the steak ale and Stilton pie. This is a really good inn.

Our regular group of friends met for an evening meal. Both the food and service were excellent. The meal was definitely home cooked and the menu was interesting with a good choice of dishes.

Visited on a very busy Friday night. When we arrived the car park was full which is a good sign.Inside every table was in use we were quickly shown to our table by a friendly waitress. Menu caters for every taste and changes monthly. Food was superb hot well cooked and restaurant style food rather than pub food.Service was slightly slow but restaurant was very busy and had a lovely atmosphere with people laughing and chatting away. Will return again sooner rather than later as thoroughly enjoyable evening.

What a lunch and what a great atmosphere. We took a wrong turn with the car and ended up here by mistake. Very authentic and the burger was very good. And not expensive.

What a find! The starters looked so exciting and enticing, I had two of them. First: Scallops & pigs cheek, charred chicory, parsley & walnut pesto, apple puree. This was so superb I suggested they offered it as a mains as well. Then I had the chicken terrine with a fabulous chutney and sourdough. I shall be back to try more. Suggest you book.

We met up with friends here because it was a perfect location. It is a country pub in a small village serving very good food by wonderful people. 2 of our number had their steak and stilton pie and it was a very generous portion and tasted superb. Home cooked of course. 2 of us had their cod and chips which were fresh and again a very generous portion and well cooked. Service was by a charming young lady, and the landlord was serving drinks. All in all a most pleasant experience and hope to be back.

Having had a busy day in Hampshire and having to return to Nottinghamshire late in the day via Northampton, the four of us were more than ready for an evening meal and after stopping off at 4 other pubs without any success we were very happy to find this one at this rural location (very near the A14 and hence M1, M6, etc.) and be made most welcome. We ordered a variety of main courses and were very impressed with what was presented and found the quality excellent and the quantity more than enough for some of us ! [The steak pie was particularly impressive]True to say if/when we are back in this area we will be happy to return again.
