The Red Lantern in Monmouthshire

Ordered 4 dishes. Arrived in minutes. So tasty, me and my wife eat everything. Service was great and polite. Fair price to. 👍

From the start we were greeted by a very miserable guy on reception, had to sit and wait next to corridor to toilets - just what you want to get your appetite going. Food was generic microwave premixed stuff sole in many cheep takeaways BUT here its not even cheap, never again.

Such a shame… How can a business not have a website, Facebook or any way of seeing a menu (?).It was the first time we had ordered from here and it will be the last. I really enjoyed my meal from here and I would go as far to say it was my favourite tasting meal in all of Chepstow (out of what we have tried) but the ingredients were cheap in quality and the price was too high.I had called to order and highlighted an allergy that my wife has. They confirmed this and said they had made a note. They did not advise of any other allergens which they are supposed to do, especially if they do not have menus. When asked if they took card payment they said they only take cash. In the current climate cash is not preferable. The staff at the venue did not seem to take much notice of social distancing. The staff member had no mask or gloves on and handed the meal to my hand. This was too close for me and I would have preferred them to leave it on the counter and kept their distance. Two bites in and it was apparent that the aforementioned ingredient, to which my wife is allergic, was in the meal. This not only spoilt our night but also the whole weekend. I write this whilst my wife lies in bed suffering on what is her birthday weekend. The manager, Simon was obnoxious and the customer service was lacking. He offered to replace the one item, but I refused and so he delivered a refund for that one item. There was not much of an apology, just a shrug, and he just didn't care. I tried to explain how serious this was and I even played back a recording of the call. I told him what I would have expected from him as a manager and he said he did not answer the phone so it was not his fault. He was not interested in talking to the staff member in question and said he can't do everything. I said I would complain and he said the owner would not be interested and indeed would just tell me to 'eff off'.I have already sent a complaint to food standards. The arrogance from this Simon should be enough to deter anyone from visiting here. The lack of customer service and the fact they do not respect customers with allergies is a huge concern. The poor quality ingredients and cost for this is not acceptable. My advice… STAY CLEAR!

Ordered takeaway, preordered for delivery at 6pm and it arrived bang on time, piping hot and easily the most tasty chinese I’ve had in chepstow. Expected a very late delivery as I’ve had with other takeaways given what’s going on at the moment, but they arrived exactly when we asked, the prawn toast was delicious, generous portions of noodles and rice and the whole family could not have been more pleased. I’ve always ordered from red lantern and it’s great to see their standards have not slipped once even during difficult times, excellent and friendly service as always and amazing food. Can’t wait to order again!

Despite recent reviews complaining about cold small portions, I found the food to be very tasty portions were fine, maybe slightly smaller than other places but it was cheaper so all relative. Also being the only Chinese take away open at the moment I’m sure it is a strain on the deliveries and getting food out and delivered still piping hot is a high expectation for anywhere and delivery times for any place at the moment aren’t quick! but they were great in having my food done a lot quicker than I thought (within 25 mins on a Saturday evening) and I was happy with my food . Would recommend.

We placed an order for delivery which included BBQ spare ribs with lots of sauce. We had cold ribs, hardly any sauce and chewy and just horrible. We also included seaweed, and crispy duck which was ok. Won tons and ribs were cold and tasted stale. I did call to let them know and was offered free ribs next time...NEXT TIME! There won’t be a next time... £27 was very expensive for what we had and found the food to be less than sub standard. (not even free prawn crackers!)We have dined in the restaurant before and was very good... seems that standards have been dropped and maybe a takeaway delivery service is not the strong point. Shame.

Cold & small portions I ordered my food 4pm, was told delivery 6pm, 6:20 it’s turns up cold and small, egg fried rice very bland... never will I order from this Chinese again! Hurry up lockdown so Chang le will open back up, food is amazing from them!!

I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone with any form of dietary requirements, they are extremely unhelpful, rude and completely refuse to cater for anyone with special requirements. Apparently it’s too difficult to cook food in separate oil, they must only have one pan in their kitchen? Awful establishment, thanks for nothing.

Went for a Friday night meal for a friends birthday. Food was very nice and the staff were lovely. Booked in advance and were shown to our table as soon as we arrived. Food was freshly cooked and service was excellent.

Well myself and 23 others visited here for a works meal out... well let’s say the food was good but the service wasn’t up to standard...Expected to food to take longer as cooked to order as we went on a Sunday evening which was Buffett night,the plates weren’t taken away and not at one time did the waitress asked if everything was ok,and I asked for a jug of water twice but never came..once again the food was definitely value for money but the waitress need a little more training,as at one time one of my friends went to bat and the waitress was sat behind it on her mobile phone,when we lots of plates that needed clearing...would go again for the food but customer service no...

Situated in a "cosy" corner of Chepstow shopping centre, accessed near to the top of Bank St. by the Lloyds Bank. The food is good, and the owners are very relaxed, seem to be quite Westernised, and are polite, like most people of far-east origin, Whether you have food delivered, walk in for a take-out or sit in the restaurant, the owners are quite willing to leave you be, if you wish, and if not, they are quite willing to enter into banter. If eating in the Restaurant they are attentive if/when required.

Ordered a takeaway from here having only just moved to Chepstow. When my partner went in to collect, he was greeted by a very rude man who he assumed was the manager. My partner happened to say he “came to collect a delivery” and the man rudely corrected him by saying “it’s not a delivery it’s food”. We were also overcharged after tallying up what we’d bought with the online menu prices. The cherry on the cake was when my partner’s “chef’s special” shredded lamb was laced with bones and inedible. Definitely do not recommend and will not be having from here again.

Last visited the red lantern 6 months ago for a family party. Went there tonight as a couple. I was immediately confronted by a bitter angry little man who was rude to me from the minute I walked in. Apparently constructive criticism is frowned upon..luckily I was in a good mood & did not punch him in the face ..shame really as the service was quick & efficient tonight & the food was good...word of advice

We have been using this great restaurant/takeaway for years now and the quality and standard always remains high.A vast choice available even for vegetarians like ourselves.Always great friendly service.Our favourite takeaway.They also open at lunchtimes,and the street is filled wirh the most delicious aroma!Spacious restaurant and ample parking.Great place to visit.

Table of 5 including a 4 year old. Food was lovely, service was a bit slow, but was so tasty. Prices were £15.99 for adults and £7.99 for children under 9 for the all you can eat. We were charged £7.99 for our 4 year old even though she only ate some chips which I thought was a little expensive for chips! Overall the food was very nice. It did take ages to be served drinks, and the overall meal could have taken less time if the service was quicker. Staff were very polite though, not like in some of the reviews I had read beforehand.

We were going to a concert and needed a meal afterward - short notice on a Saturday night. The Red Lantern agreed our booking and were courteous, helpful, clean and efficient. They looked after the five of us and served us lots of very tasty food. One of us felt the scallops could have been cooked differently - but the overall dining experience was excellent. Cost was average for a decent sit down meal for five. I'd happily go back.

Awful customer service and disgusting behaviour/attitude towards us from the manager (presumably). He had no manners and was extremely rude to us.

The food is generally good but the restaurant is understaffed so service will always be poor. We told the staff this on our last visit and they have responded by increasing their prices and reducing their buffet options. As they don’t value our custom, they have now lost it

I've been using the red lantern for years now and it's always been amazing food & service....until now!! A group of 10 family members booked in for the 'all you can eat buffet'

Went with friends having had a recommendation from a family member, although we used to visit years ago had not been for a very long time. Tried yesterday and was pleasantly surprised as the food was so tasty, service was a little slow, but we were told that this would be the case as they were full, also beer reasonably prices at £3.50 a pint.

A really good meal with plenty to choose from. Often go there with family and we all feel that it is value for money. The staff are always friendly and polite.

With my love of Chinese food, whenever I am in a new town I look for a good one. In Chepstow I was not disappointed. The Red Lantern, in Bank Street, is relatively small and when we went we found that the place was full on a Sunday evening and it would have been much better had we made an advance booking. The Manager explained that there would be a delay; however we were taken to a table, served our drinks and Prawn crackers. The reason for the delay was readily apparent with a group occupying almost the whole room of the main dining area with about 25 people. They had already ordered and we would just have to wait. I am very glad we did, as when the food arrived we had 5 dishes and a rice dish for the three of us and all were very good. The menu is large and various with set menus for 2, 3 or more people, plus an extended a la carte to choose from. I shall not try and say which was the best but all we had was better than the average, and for a full menu there is a site on Google, not from Red Lantern, as I was unable to find one. However if you search enough, and it took me quite a while to find, there is one giving the full menu, very interesting. They also offer on Friday and Sunday evenings, all you can eat at a set price, if you book in advance.

The owner or manager needs to take a course in hospitality. Restaurant is empty (completely empty) and I was told he was fully booked in the most impolite manner.

We have visited the red Lantern many times and have never been disappointed. The variety of food on offer is fascinating and the quality is top rate. The staff are unfailingly helpful and good humoured. The food is freshly prepared and there is no long periods of waiting for it to arrive. We thoroughly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

We come here often... Buffet nights and takeaways .... My daughter decided she wanted her bday meal here.... We booked for 6 and a baby turned up with 7 and two babies... We were sat down and nothing was too much trouble ... Lovely food lovely service... Didn't eat everything so containers were provided ... One of my fave chineses!!!

Have been coming here for both sit down and take away meals for many years. The food is good and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Fantastic hot fresh food, lovely waitress called Fran, all perfect as per usual ⭐️ Arrived a little late,8 pm table was shown to our table straight away and was not rushed and didn't leave till just after 11 pm

The Friday and Sunday evening "all you can eat" deal is excellent value for money. I always book this restaurant for my friends between Christmas and New Year. The food is always lovely and the service friendly, but unobtrusive. I would highly recommend this for either takeaway or sit in meals.

Took the misses there as she was moaning she was hungry . Wanted to book in for 7 . But was recommended to come a bit earlier as they had a big party booked in 7ish . And they didn't want to us waiting a long time . We stuffed ourselves silly . And had various dishes that were all good . Think their chopsticks are broken though as they wouldn't work for me !! Would go back again if I'm in the area .

Carol and I love Chinese cuisine. We had a super eat as much as you like meal last month at the Red Lantern. The prawn dishes were exceptionally good especially the sweet and sour prawns.....mmmmm yummy. We have since also had home delivery of their meals.

Food was terrible. Probably one of the worst Chinese food I have ever had. The Chow Mein was a disgrace, literally Noodles with plain chicken sitting on top. Egg Fried rice was over cooked and mushy. Was disgusting. I would advice to never order from here. The Staff were also rude and took 10 them 10 mins to give me my food which was just sitting under the counter in a box.

Very disappointing take away for four cost £57.00 paid extra for seafood which was not worth it wont be going there again!

After seeking the menu online we ordered food over the phone. Once the food arrived we were charged £8 more than the cost online. When I called to query this I was met with a very rude and arrogant attitude, they acknowledged that the website was out of date and incorrect but told me that it was valentines so they suggest that we get over it and make the most of valentines. When I challenged the rude response and poor customer service I was told that we have what we ordered irrelevant of the difference in cost and they recommend we just don't call again! We were not offered any money back nor any apology just rude arrogant insult. To say I was not only disappointed with the service would be a lie as once we opened the food, parts were cold, parts were missing (which were never delivered) and fish in a chicken rice?? Definitely a huge disappointment and somewhere we will never be using again

We ordered a takeaway for my birthday and it was really lovely best Chinese in town, we did order satay chicken and we got garlic chicken instead,but that said it was still very tasty and I will order again. The best Chinese in town

Another excellent, value for money, all you can eat buffet meal. We've had quite a few and all just as good as the first. Very friendly atmosphere too.

Had our (little) business Christmas meal here, while we had bought a few takeaways (always good the way) this was out first visit in many years. And what a treat it was too, the lovely staff (both management and our charming waitress) could not have been better. Looking forward to paying a visit again, and once again thanks to all who made out visit so special !

By far my favourite Chinese restaurant in the area. Are here plenty of times and I have never had a bad meal here. On Friday they have an all you can eat not sure on the set price but is fantastic price for what you get and the food quality does not suffer. It gets super busy so you need to book in advance and the service can be a little slow but it's expected with the volume of people they get in.

I come down from Scotland once or twice a year on business and I always visit The Red Lantern.Food is excellent and I've always had excellent service whenever I've visited. Been coming here for nearly 11 years, here's to another 11!

Spent an evening here. The food and wine were lovely. The place is really nicely decorated and clean, and the people who served us were very friendly and helpful. Really enjoyed our visit and will definitely return.

Visited the Red Lantern tonight. There was only us and one other couple in yet the service was very was. The guy who seated us was too busy rushing off to do something else to take our drinks order. The coke came out flat and the orange juice i asked for was watery. The food was ok but quite small portions for the price. The chicken was quite hard. The food had clearly been re heated. Wouldnt visit again. The waiter was rude

Manager is exceptionally rude to staff it ruined our experience as it was so uncomfortable the watch the way he spoke to girls who can't be any more than 16. Food was OK, will not be returning.

Had a take away from here very disappointing food was dreadful it has to be the worst Chinese food I have ever my wife hasn't been well since.

Ate here with family and friends - 8 of us in total. The menu was extensive with a great variety to choose from. Service was really friendly, attentive and patient as we all kept changing our minds due to the amount of choice. The meals were superb and well presented. Meal size was good and plentiful.Highly recommended and now also use the takeaway regularly given the quality of the food. Never disappointed.Highly recommend.

We visit every few weeks and the buffet never fails to impress. An excellent range of dishes offered with large portions.£13.95 per person which is excellent value for money especially if you add aromatic duck to your meal.The buffet is cooked freshly which makes it better than many places where it has been sitting around for a long time.Staff are friendly and attentive.

Excellent takeaway from here. Set meal B for two was great...loads of it. Came with large portion of mixed starters, crispy duck with six pancakes and all trimmings, and plenty of main courses. Even with two large appetites we couldn't finish it. Would highly recommend.

As a party of eight we had an excellent meal at the Red Lantern. The mixed selection of starters was delightful and the main meal dishes were extremely tasty and good value.The service was attentive and could not be faulted. An excellent meal all round on Chinese New Year Weekend.This was our third visit to this restaurant in the past year and each has been extremely good.

The service was pretty good, it was fast and reliable. The food was of a good standard, we had a set menu. The aromatic duck was a little dry, but the prawns we had at the end we're very nice, packed full of flavor. The staff were really nice, we had our little niece with us who can sometimes be a handful but the staff were very tolerant and even gave her a lolly !

Not an awful lot I can say about here except for the quick turnaround of the food when the order was eventually taken.We visited on a Saturday evening. There was a a good few members of staff who all seemed to be standing around. It took 25 minutes for us to place an order even though several staff walked by our table. When our food arrived it was ok but to make matter worse it took another 20 mins for the table to be cleared and our bill to arrive.Wouldn't visit again.

Six family members met here from many miles away for my sons birthday. If you can please all of your family all of the time and all at one meal you have really achieved the impossible. It really was a great time enjoyed by all ages from a 10 year old to a 75 year old. All had different starters, different mains, different deserts, different drinks. A vast menu, amazing service, nobody waited, all food eaten and thoroughly enjoyed, I think you can guess we will be going again.

Went here for a family birthday. The food was nice and was great value for the all you can eat offer. Service was also good. A small place but well run. My only gripe would be that the food was too much like takeaway food. I could've just ate the same at home.

We're never disappointed when we eat here or get a takeaway from here. The staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. Returned (yet again) on Friday night with friends and had the buffet which we always recommend to anyone and everyone and now my friends know why. The food is always delicious and so flavoursome so we will continue telling everyone we know about what a great place this is.

Opted for a take out this time. Great service. Food packed in a box so really easy to manage an order for 4 to the car. 10 min drive to friends and the food was still piping hot. Great portion sizes and the food was great. Recommend the lettuce wraps and crispy beef with chilli - but then again everything was great

Just got back from a meal with my husband and family for my brother's birthday and was served by a man (presumably the manager) from the start he was very abrupt and rude and made us feel like we were being an inconvenience, he huffed and puffed every time we asked a question and had a face that would turn milk sour, at the end of the meal I asked him could I change my mind and instead of a coffee have a jasmine tea and he sighed loudly and repeated the whole drinks menu as if I'd changed the whole thing! I cannot convey just how rude he was and I will never eat there again. I feel very sorry for the other lady and the young waitress who were both lovely, I only gave one star as it is impossible to give 0.

Last minute booking on a Saturday night after a day at the Bristol Balloon Festival. This wasn't a buffet night, so we ordered from the menu.Large choice of menu with the usual favourites and a few different dishes. Food was very good. Service was great. Attentive without being intrusive.

A good chinese, a buffet on some Sundays. Good size portions. Friendly staff. I like the takeaway from here, but the atmosphere is nothing special for eat in.

Ordered drinks and starters on 'all you can eat' buffet which was delivered in good time. Wine arrived at table unopened with no offer to taste or pour! Waited 30 mins for next course and 45 mins waiting to order main. Highlighted to bar staff we had been waiting and were promised someone would be with us soon. Left as no sign of service. Still paid £26! Understaffed with inexperienced, unattentive youngsters! Wont be back in a hurry!

My wife and I called and made a booking for a table of 2, which was available.We arrived and was met with by a kind host who took us to our table. Very friendly and helpful team indeed.We ordered drinks and they were brought out rapidly, the prawn crackers were a great addition to the table on arrival also!I must add that the restaurant was very cold, the food was hot and very tasty, too much for us so we took some home, and was happily "doggy bagged" up for us.We had Crispy beef (chilli)Chicken with Cashew nutsSoft fried noodles with BeansproutsIt was very nice and tasty. We would go back but probably for their Buffet nights which we have been to before and are fantastic, I would gladly return for a buffet night, but for a meal off their menu... This was by far the worst Chinese restaurant we have eaten in this year. On entering the 'restaurant' the floor was sticky (always a bad sign of cleanliness). The starter costing £12 looked like it had been warmed up from an Iceland freeze meal. The main course of egg fried rice and tofu in black bean sauce was tepid and the rice was under cooked. The male toilets stank and the hand dryer looked dirty.Terrible food, awful service and no atmosphere... my advice would be go to the chippy up the road.

Visited my son over the bank holiday weekend. We decided on a take away, so popped into The Red Lantern. We were politely informed the kitchen was busy and agreed to wait. Our order arrived before the estimated time. We enjoyed what we ordered, my only comment was that the dishes needed a little more seasoning and the noodles a little over-cooked, but I am being critical, we still enjoyed what we had and would probably try again, when I next visit.

Please do not believe the negative reviews, it is just not true. Service was great, food was very nice and reasonably priced and the décor/experience was great. This is in a great location in Chepstow and not a commercial restaurant. This is a Chinese restaurant which has made our experience in Wales one of the highlights.

I had booked a table for a Saturday evening! There were 2 of us. We arrived and were seated, we ordered some drinks, the restaurant was quite busy, the waiter came over and took our order; we ordered some starters and a main each along with some vermicelli noodles to share. Our starters arrived, I began to tuck into mine of stuffed lettuce wraps and the filling tasted burnt! My friend had sesame prawn toast and said it tasted rubbery like it had been cooked and reheated. We didn't at this point mention anything to the waiter, we were then waiting about 40 minutes for our main, the waiter then came out and said they didn't have any noodles left!!! No sorry just very to the point attitude! I then ordered egg fried rice to replace, the rice then came out as boiled and only 1 main meal, the waiter told us to enjoy our meal. At this point my friend was very disgruntled and asked the waiter where the other main meal was!? The waiter then admitted he had lost his ticket and didn't know what I had ordered, by this reply we complained only for the waiter to shout at us 'Did we want a microphone to inform the whole world' I was absolutely disgusted by the attitude of this waiter and the whole experience! I have spent thousands on this establishment in takeaways and meals and this is how the repay me! NEVER AGAIN!

10 of us from our golf group went for our festive food and drinks. We had the all you can eat friday menu and it was fantastic value. We were really well looked after by the lovely Emma, and will be making it a regular stop on our social calendar.

It started off good, nice table and a good selection on the menu, that's where it ended! After over an hour waiting for our starters, it arrived at our table stone cold. When we complained, they brought out a tea light warmer to warm it up!! At this point we decided to leave and just pay for the drinks we had and join the queue of other people also leaving who were having a similar experience. When paying for the drinks, they tried to charge for drinks we had not even had!! They were very unconcerned about our complaint and even had the cheek to say " please call again" not likely!! Ruined our entire evening. Avoid at all cost

Had booked the table a week ago for a birthday celebration (forgetting it was Chinese New Year). There were 6 of us (4 adults and 2 daughters) and when we arrived at 6.45pm we could see it was busy but by no means packed.On the plus side we were shown to our table quickly, complimentary prawn crackers were brought out and our drinks order delivered without delay. Food orders were taken reasonably soon after. After that things went down hill badly.We had asked for all food to come out at the same time but it started to arrive in dribs and drabs. The mixed hors d'oeuvres (for 2) and other starters were limited and looked as though they had been prepared some considerable time earlier. The first main coarse (Beef in black pepper sauce) brought out was wrong (not sizzling) so taken back. The half (looked more like a quarter) crispy duck was delivered less the cucumber bits and the sauce (and they never arrived) - so that main was spoilt. [We ordered more drinks at this point - which were quickly delivered]. The sweet and sour chicken meal also never turned up (or the chips). When the correct 1st meal arrived the accompanying chicken fried rice didn't and also failed to materialise at all. After that nobody came to check if everything was fine! So we finished what we had and then one of us went to speak to the manager about the experience. To be fair to him, he accepted that it wasn't acceptable and reduced the bill by more than half of what it would have been.So all in all 'disappointing'. Won't be rushing back anytime soon.

We were looking for somewhere to eat in Chepstow, we like Chinese so tried here. Staff were friendly enough and the food was ok, nothing special but we were happy with what we had.

Went here on Saturday night and can't say enough good things about it.The food was fantastic as was the service the whole dinning experience was definitely something to rave about will eat here again next time we ars in chepstow

Have take aways from here all the time. You also get a little taster of dishes that you wouldn't think of having. Very good at making what you ask for. They do a nice lemon chicken but I wanted to try orange chicken and they made it for me. Very nice it was too.

In short, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. Even with a confusing offer we still managed to have a pleasant meal. However, the confusion meant that there was a misunderstanding with whether we had finished. This clearly didn't please our waiter who then decided the best way to handle that situation was to out right have a go at us, along the lines of "You told me you didn't want anything else and let me tidy away...now I'll have to relay the table". The tone he took would probably have got me fired from the job where I have to deal with customers daily. This led to the most awkward 5 minutes where we decided we didn't feel welcome enough to eat more and so paid the bill, during which time the birthday girl was almost in tears. Ultimately overlooking any good memories that the night had formed. In one word; disgusting.

My Favorite take away in Chepstow. Lush food and always service with a smile. Have not found a better Chinese any where around yet :-)

Bad Chinese restaurants do exist but thankfully are few and far between - this is not one of them. Friendly staff. Excellent food and generous proportions compared to many I have eaten in. IMHO Only thing that stops it from getting an excellent is the slightly tired décor and the 'grey' hand towels offered at the end of the meal. They need binning and some new ones investing in :-) But I'm not going to knock it that much for these small details. I am sure anyone would enjoy the quality of the food here.

We popped in one lunchtime last week and were pleased to find they were doing a weekday lunch special for £5.50 a head. We weren't sure what to expect but the main courses and husband's starter (soup) were excellent, really tasty and piping hot. The veggie spring rolls were a bit small and lacking in filling but were ok. Service fast and friendly. We'll be going back!

We visited The Red lantern for the first time a few weeks ago when the do an all you can eat buffet from the menu. The service was second to none, they let you eat without being hassled, We chose a variety of food to start with from the menu and it was excellent tasty and moorish. We then picked a second selection, which half was not as ordered, the waitress explained that the chef did not understand english, this only added to the great night and the food was excellent. Highly Recommend.

Simon and Alice have always made us feel like valued customers at the Red Lantern and last night was no exception. We were served with beer and J2O and a dish of prawn crackers as we chatted in the bar waiting to make up our minds from the takeaway menu. Simon allowed us to stray from the menu (not for the first time) and cooked Duck Fried Rice with plum sauce. We also ordered Chicken Fried Rice with curry sauce, Crispy Chilli Beef and Chicken Peppercorn. It was cooked to perfection and rest assured we will keep on popping in for more :-) .

My husband and i went for a meal there on Saturday 4th May, we used to live in chepstow and go there alot when the woos owned it.Well,the manager, Simon, is so rude and the way he spoke to those lovely young girls, was disgusting! The food was average, the young girls worked so hard, i heard a lad sitting behind us, not to tip them as the boss and Simon take half!! I work for the tax Revenue and I will be passing the info on!!When we visit in the summer, we will be having a family meal of 30 people, we were going to the Red lantern, now we will book somewhere else..So 1 out of 5 is all we are scoring them.......

I went into this restaurant a few weeks back, after going a few years ago and enjoying the experience we decided to relive the feeling. HOWEVER we were left feeling disappointed. Firstly the food was salty and the curry left the whole family feeling rather ill, this was not the case a few years ago when we would indulge in the delectable food. The service we received at the start of the night from the young girls was of high standard and we were enjoying their chattiness and how happy they seemed THEN we overheard the manager talking to the young girls of whom looked no older than 17, he spoke to them in a rather rude manner which come across as downgrading and patronizing. The girls were left looking very upset and angered at the comments, this was disgusting and I have never seen staff spoke to so disgustingly. I was left feeling appalled. I will never return to the Red Lantern which is a real shame, a let down I must say.

I've been in Chepstow for 16yrs and this was always our weekend take away haunt. Even our visitors would comment on the lovely food and it was the only chinese we would use in the area. How times change, I feel the place has become a bit unloved and the chefs not as great as they once were. The food now smacks of complacency, the quality inconsistent and in some cases the portion sizes reduced. Our favourite of crispy chilli beef used to feed 2 easily and tasted fresh and crisp, now it fills half the carton and is chewy and swimming in an artificial tasting sauce. The ribs in the mixed hors douvres are of poor quality with little meat and take up 50% of the portion, leaving you wanting more of the lovely chilli chicken and spring rolls, it just doesn't feel like value for money. We keep going back in hope but our last dish of pork was again lacking in flavour other than lots of ginger and the pork of such poor quality that it was mostly fat and gristle, it was truly disgusting. We have started using another chinese across from the book shop in the town and the food there is much better, still not as great as the Red Latern all those years ago but far superior to what it is today.

I was happy with both the food and the staff who were charming. Given that this is a small town restaurant I would consider visiting again.

Went in a party of 11, pre-booked so it was not a surprise when we turned up. Service was slow to say the least, hour and a half for our mains to come out! Food was average at best, roast pork in beansprouts tasted very salty. A lot of food left over and not an offer for it to be boxed up, had to ask specifically. After all this it took over half an hour for the bill to come, and when you can see staff behind the bar doing nothing it's extremely frustrating. WILL NOT RETURN!

Excellent informed service ,tasty well cooked food and friendly staff .Lovely lady on front desk .The best Chinese food in Chepstow .Enjoyable and tasty vegetarian food .they cook amazing soft tofu and broccoli in garlic perfecto.High recommended,
