We came in on a Wednesday evening a table of 7.We were greeted somewhat warmly and shown to our table promptly after signing in to track & trace. We were given menus, but had to ask for a wine list. A couple of our party wanted to pop outside for a breath of fresh air and for some reason this seemed to cause great confusion amongst the staff when it came to ordering. The food was excellent. All our starters were well received as were the mains. The venison was excellent and perfectly cooked, the halibut was aassive portion but still cooked really well. The vegetarian curry was an absolute mountain of food and the plaice was very well cooked in part of an elegant dish. The only criticism came from the deconstructed chicken and bacon pie who felt it was missing something compared to the food on previous visits. The confusion about half our party popping out for air is the only real reason I didn't award this 5 stars.on the whole a very lovely meal coming to around £250 for 7 people. Certainly not bad for the quality.

Excellent food, great value, highly recommended!!! We had squid and haddock and leek tart for starters - plenty of squid, crispy and hot, so tender... steak sandwich (melt in the mouth), pork loin and lamb rump for mains - couldn’t fault it. Homemade chips to die for and they weren’t stingy!! All in all one of the best pub meals we’ve had for ages and the pricing very reasonable... when in the area we’ll definitely be back! Staff lovely especially the lady with darker hair - so welcoming and friendly in these challenging times...

We came in on Friday evening as a table of 7 to a nice warm welcome and saw a business putting real effort into social distancing. The whole building was operating a one way system and all the tables were very spread out to allow the waiting staff to move around safely.Service was slow to start but overall was very good.It was a reasonably extensive menu with some truly lovely sounding options. We had a range of starters from salt and pepper squid to just bread and olives and the portion sizes seemed very generous. For mains we again had a range of items. The lamb looked amazing and was reported as very good, the sea bream tasted very nice but the dish was dry due to a lack of sauce. The falafel burger was a little dry but did taste nice. I had the pork and apple burger with crispy onions and chips. The patty itself was very nice, but i wasn't a big fan of the crispy onions, although i did order it so i shouldn't complain. All the portions were very generous and a number of our party failed to finish dinner and so we didn't order desserts. The wine selection was quite good despite being a reduced menu due to the current obvious supply restrictions and the beer selection was still good.On the whole it was a nice enjoyable meal and I'm sure if we holiday in the area again we will be back.Thank you.

Visited whilst in the area and having been before we knew what to expect. The food is excellent, nothing to outre or different but enough to show that they have a decent chef in the kitchen. It was Sunday so opted for a traditional roast dinner, The beef was a generous, fatty (in a good way!) piece and the Yorkshire puddings were 'marvellous'. The belly pork, pork scratchings were amazing and then the dessert.....Rhubarb bavarois was phenomenal. The staff were lovely and whilst chatting they were giving recommendations of places to visit and amongst others recommended Thorpe Perrow...(see separate review)...and for that we thank them.WELL WORTH A VISIT.

My husband and I stayed last night at The Queen's Head and had a lovely time. We were greeted very warmly on a cold, wet January evening and shown to a clean and comfortable room. (We loved the teddy on the bed.)Dinner, in the old world pub with log fires, was excellent. My husband particularly enjoyed his starter of mushroom, cream and pasta and his main of venison. I had delicious lemon sole, perfectly cooked. We had a bottle of Alsace wine to accompany the meal.Next morning we had a choice of breakfast foods freshly cooked to order- a perfect start to the day. Our host couldn't have been pleasanter and we would love to return. Thank you so much.

We love this place, it’s a gem. The food is excellent and the staff are so accommodating. Going above and beyond to please. The ambiance is perfect for a country pub. The fire is lit and fed throughout the evening and there is a constant flow of people through the doors. The chef offers an amazing diverse menu and always delivers to the highest standards - he is exceptional and I am not sure how he does it as the place is always packed. This evening I had Fresh lemon sole which was the most generous portion and delicious. Great choice of beers, wines and G&T’s.

Visited this pub on the last night of our holiday. A nonchalant pub that hides at the back a high quality restaurant with an outstanding menu that uses local produce cooked to perfection. I had baked squid as a starter (don’t get the smaller mains as starters they are huge) that melted in my mouth. The main consisted of roast chicken breast stuffed with blue Wensleydale cheese with fondant potato fresh seasonal vegetables in a leek onion and cream sauce OUTSTANDING and yes I left room for a small pud in the form of creme brûlée with homemade ginger ice cream. A couple of glasses of a nice fruity New Zealand white and I was in heaven. My question is why is this not in a good food guide somewhere. CAN NOT RECOMMEND THIS HIGHLY ENOUGH. Go ahead and treat yourself, supplied by high quality serving staff that always have a smile.

We were staying on a small campsite in the village and booked a table for the Friday night. Very impressed by the selection of beers, all Yorkshire based breweries, and a couple of unusual ones at that. Staff were charming and helpful. Our meals were good - the fish and chips was superb. My wife had the braised venison, and unfortunately found it a little salty. We mentioned this to a waitress, and the restaurant manager came over and asked us if we would like another main course. As my wife had eaten about half of it and had enjoyed her starter we said no thank you. We also had an excellent treacle and stout pudding for dessert. When we came to pay the bill we found they had adjusted it to take into consideration our comments about the main course. So impressed by this type of customer service, which is lacking in so many places. Would we go back again - definately!!!!!!

In the past five weeks we have eaten here three times - and cannot fault the service or the food or value ! Our first time here was and evening visit as a group of eight friends, and there were delicious choices of food for everyone. The fantastic thing about the Queens head is the extremely reasonable 2 courses for £15 , 3 courses for £19........ and amazingly they were extremely generous portions, not a small amount for a smaller price ! The service was prompt and friendly, and the restaurant has a wonderful view across the Dales.

We had a booking and arrived 8 minutes ahead of time. We were given our table and then ignored and had to ask for a menu after some time. The order was eventually taken but well over 30 minutes later we had not received our starter even though food was constantly going out to other tables. We asked the waitress about ours and were told we had arrived late! She was apparently going on the time the order was taken. An hour after our arrival we were served our starter which was very undercooked. This was followed by the fish and chips but the plate was swimming with water, presumably from the peas not being drained properly. and so the batter on the fish was very soggy underneath. Extremely disappointed.

Been to the Queens Head a few times in the past when have been in the area.always enjoyed our meals and had some favourite dishes. This time our past favourites not on the menu any more...but the biggest issue was the time we had to wait. You wouldn't mind that if when you went in the staff would tell you honestly that if they were very busy and you would most likely be waiting an hour to eat ! Then at least you could accept this and decide if you wanted to wait....we got our meal 1 hour and 10 mins after walking in!,Other people were waiting as long in front of us...the meals we chose were nice, but due to the long wait we cut our meals to a main course only..the owner ( I think) was very apologetic...not sure what the main cause of the delays were, but we may now give the dining a miss when around in the future, pity really as past meals were excellent.

We arrived at the Queens Head and I found a table, while Ade waited at the bar for far too long. Although both the staff were serving on entry, one of the staff finished serving another customer, then just walked away, while the other staff member appeared to be busy working out her tip from a prior customer. We felt ignored by the young staff, but asked for a menu to order food. We waited again, to order and had nearly finished our drinks before we asked a young staff member clearing another table, if we could order. The owner appeared and took our order. We mentioned our wait and she said the kitchen had been busy. The food arrived and it was very very nice, thankfully worth the long wait. They did say sorry (for the wait on ordering the food) on two occasions but it was a shame, as the rest of the evening was lovely.

After having seen some excellent reviews and staying nearby in Leyburn we booked for a Saturday night. Walked into the pub and felt immediately as if it was a local welcoming place with a full bar of people eating.Did not have to wait long for table in formal dining room at the rear.Cannot fault the food nor the service. However if I were to book again (and I will next time in area) I think I would ask to be seated in the bar area, where there was a good atmosphere. I just felt the rear dining room to be a little too quiet for my liking to the extent it felt like you were in a library. That's maybe just a personal thing for me, but I like a place to be not lively but at least not too quiet. I can imagnie it would be a great room to hold a formal event and would suit a party booking, but not a couple.Food 100%Service 100%Ambience 40% sorry!

Recommended this pub by the owner of the Friar's Head in nearby Akebar which was under renovation at the time. That was my good fortune. The landlady of the Queens Head was absolutely delightful and made us feel very welcomed. The menu was very tempting so we ordered a variety of dishes and shared. Fabulous food and swift service. We'll definitely return. Makes a great break during a nice ride in the countryside. Good facilities, clean, warm, and excellent service. Just the sort of friendly bar you want on a day out.

We visited twice in the space of a week, partly because w enjoyed it do much the first time and partly because we couldn't believe he lunchtime special could be consistently so good for the price. It was !! Beautiful traditional pub, excellent lunchtime service and a quality and portion of food that you hope to find in many country pubs but sadly don't get all the time. The 2 courses for £11 is a steal.....can't stop going on about the quality for the price !The haddock goujons as a starter are what many inferior places would call fish and chips as a portion....delightfully white and perfectly cooked fresh fish , almost fillets in size, first time in batter , second in breadcrumbs , both perfect. Belly pork for main melted in your mouth , the tuna perfectly cooked and pink and no scrimping on fillet size again. If you find room for pud , plum crumble in season and not disappointing. It's our local now !! Ought to try on a night but with such lunchtime value why bother .Keep up the good work .

Eat here twice while spending a week walking in the Dales. The food on both occasions was of a high standard. The specials, mainly fish, could not be faulted. The staff too were helpful, very pleasant and welcoming. With the second visit the pub was full and the staff were very good in keeping you informed as to the wait time and not taking orders until the kitchen could manage it. More importantly orders were taken from waiting customers on a first come basis. The beer was excellent too!

If you like large portions this is the place to go! I had a starter of black pudding and kidneys which was excellent. The piece of black pudding measured 41/2 x 21/2 x 1/2 inch! This was followed by a very good pork belly slice on black pudding...the same size. I enjoyed both courses but could not face a pudding. My wife had a smoked haddock dish with a sauce. She didn't like the sauce as there was too much of it and it overpowered the fish.Service was excellent.

Wide ranging menu and nicely served. We've dined here several times over the past couple of years and the food has always been good and nicely presented, although the service was a bit on the slow side on one of the evenings we visited. Also the vegetables were rather undercooked on one evening but these are small niggles as overall it is a good pub with a large restaurant which I would recommend.

This is just the most charming pub....it's a country inn dating from the 1700s...it's a traditional, cozy welcoming pub that serves some good local Yorkshire beer on tap as well as a good selection of wines by the glass..There are fabulous views from the back overlooking the woods and dales making it a tranquil location to relax, unwind and enjoy a meal....this is not your average pub fare...the food is really good and relies on lots of local in season produce to create relish plates of food....asparagus featured strongly on the menu (it was in season!) and was served simply with a soft poached egg and home made hollandaise cause...pork loin was just wonderful as was the lobster...highly recommended if you are in the Leyburn area of lower Wensleydale....

We (mum and I) visited here as for my aunt and uncles 70th birthday afternoon tea. What a beautiful find! The drive up is through some of the most beautiful countryside I've ever seen and the area is just stunning. We pulled up along side this tiny pub and thought it was very picturesque. Oh though, what a treat was in store for us. The pub looked like one of those tiny English countryside pubs that's dark and small and cosy inside and we weren't wrong. Well, not technically. As you first go in it's small with loads of cosy nooks and tables - the mind you can just settle into for the day. But that's not where we were having our lunch. We were invited to go through to the lounge. Along another little corridor through to the most amazing room! Sets of leather sofas, traditional fireplace and a bookcase full of engrossing books - I think I found heaven. But that's not the best part. At the other end of the lounge are enough tables to seat around 50 people that lead through to the veranda and one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen. This place is perfect in any season. I so see myself next to the roaring fire in winter with a book or on the veranda on a summers day. The food is just amazing. Homemade vegetable soup, roast beef, fresh vegetables, cheesecake with raspberry sorbet - all just amazing. We only went over for a meal but reading the reviews I think you can stay over?? I'd love to do that and show my husband this little pub that I fell in love with.

We booked a family room here (2 adults and a 4 year old) as we were visiting the Forbidden Garden and didn't fancy the long drive home afterwards. As it was a last minute booking it was a case of 'what was available' rather than choosing a place but we fell really lucky with this place. Our family room (Warren) was fantastic, warm, clean, spacious with a separate living area to relax in and huge bathroom. The food was marvellous, the evening meal was delicious and even though the children's menu listed 'fish fingers' it was lovely to see proper pieces of fish, cut and shaped into finger shapes instead of the usual Birds Eye type normally associated with children's menu's. Breakfast in a B&B tend to be a quick in and out affair but not here. It was treated like any other meal, not rushed, well presented and very tasty. The service was impeccable from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. We didn't have to ask for anything, all the staff knew who we were and which room we staying in. It's little things like that that make certain places stand out for me and this place ticked all of the boxes. We didn't want to leave in the morning as it was a gloriously sunny day and there were fantastic views over the dales from the outside decking area. A great place to stay and we will definitely be staying here again next time we visit the area.

My wife and I stayed here in September for one night. Our very spacious and comfortable room was behind the pub overlooking the lovely remote valley. The owner could not have been more welcoming. We ate in the pleasant pub dining room that night and the food and service was first class as was our breakfast the next morning. The price of the room and food was very reasonable, particularly the decent wine list!I would thoroughly recommend the Queen's Head.

You hear about places like this that time has forgotten and you just drove past on the way to a better place but if you have, you have missed a little hidden time machine. This is a quite country pub with a old fashioned feel. Yes the restaurant reminds me of a Gordon Ramsey kitchen nightmare on LSD but move on from the decoration of salmon pink and sofas and when you sit to eat you forget the decor and fall in love with place. With sharing platters, game meats and fish to choose from its a menu of delight. The chef clearly knows what he is doing and the service is polite and attentive. Overall 5 this is a time machine that needs more people to come and enjoy it. Well done to all once they come update the decor or don't maybe that's its charm.

We visited with friends one weekday evening. The food was fantastic. We had the mushrooms to start. Wow, so tasty and an enormous portion. My hobby has a fab steak and all of us enjoyed our meals, some of the best we have ever had in a pub.The only thing I would say is that we were the only people eating in the restaurant so it did lack atmosphere. It was very bright too so did not give a good ambience. Think it may have been a good idea to offer us seating in the main bar area which was cosy due to it being a quiet evening. The service was really friendly and food outstanding, so have given a 5 stars as my comments on ambience can be easily rectified.

As the place filled up around us we considered the early diner menu.I had black pudding and lambs kidneys and the other half had mushrooms in wensleydale blue cheese sauce - both starters and both beautifully cooked. We then had sea bass and pork loin again stunning dishes. The pub also has a good selection of real ales and extensive wine list.We couldn't recommend this enough and we'll worth wandering off the beaten track for

We were very disappointed when we had lunch here today. Nothing wrong with the food, in fact it was good, but my friend who hates bog standard vegetables asked if he could have chips or salad instead of the veg’s. We were gobsmacked when the waiter said ‘NO’ and if we wanted a substitute we would have to pay the extra. We have been going to this pub for years and years and all the previous owners have been very accommodating as most places are!! I would have understood if we asked for something out the ordinary or more expensive, but how hard is it to swap veg for chips or salad when both are on the menu! And there were only two other people in the place,!! We weren't even offered an explanation of apology-just a short and stern ‘NO’ So, come on Queens Head give your customers what ‘they’ want to eat as a side dish, without charging them extra on top of what they already have to pay for sides they DON'T want! We both decided that that was our last visit to The Queens Head. Its a shame really but there are better accommodating places to eat where the food is great!

We would have looked elsewhere without booking and causing hassle to the management if they were a more transparent about the dog issue?

Planned to break up a 3 hour journey with a lunch time pit-stop and decided on this country pub by its "mostly" favourable reviews and we can only say that based on our meals please ignore any negative comments printed by what I can only say must be some very hard to please customers. The service was faultless ,the fish & chips cooked to perfection and even when I asked if it was possible to have "the best gravy in Yorkshire as a previous tripper had posted " there was no response other than of course! and by the way it really was lovely gravy. The pub was exactly what I was looking for in a country inn and was full of a mixture of locals and passing trade by the time we were leaving. The barman was full of local knowledge and more than happy to advise. The toilets were spotless and stocked with "The Bath House " toiletries which tells its own tale as to this pubs standards.I would not hesitate for a second to recommend this pub !!!!!
