A friend and went in for breakfast at around 11am. The waitress barked at us “what do you want?” I replied breakfast please. She barked “we’re not doing doing breakfast anymore” we stood in the door waiting for her to reply with but we can offer you other thing and offer us something else. But she just stood there giving us a evil look. So we left. Not the best imagine for Walton on the Naze.

Having moved some eight months ago to the east Essex coastal town of Frinton-on-Sea I’ve been visiting numerous local eateries trying to track down the breakfast Holy Grail. Stop the press as today it’s been located! I heard about The Potatoe (sic) Shack from another diner at Fred’s café in Frinton. This morning with my wife and daughter we walked the 2 miles, building up a healthy appetite in the process, and were warmly greeted and seated at a table of our choice, excepting for one already reserved. We sat at a window table in what is a very cosy and welcoming interior ( photographs attached ). The Shack, as it is affectionately and locally referred to, has several tables with about thirty covers and is decorated in a stylised but pleasing fashion and was soon buzzing with patrons. The Shack has a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, it has easy wheelchair access, takes credit cards, has no customer internet, allows you to bring your own alcohol ( unknown if you have to pay corkage ) and recommends booking in advance if you want their Sunday lunch. Another patron who has been local for nineteen years couldn’t speak highly enough regards the roast dinner. A photograph of the main menu is also attached but in précis it is comprehensive and you can also go off pisté and custom build to your taste. The condiments, salt & pepper, were in sachets and the sauces and mustard arrived decanted into separate ramekins. I ordered breakfast 3 ( see picture ) with the addition of black pudding and fried slice. It was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and well presented. My wife and daughter ordered more realistically and thoroughly enjoyed their food too. Will I return? Yes, yes and thrice yes. Will I supersize my order again? Time will tell? But presently I feel like Monty Python’s Mr Creosote. I cannot recommend that you visit this gem highly enough. It is also conveniently situated at the seashore end of Walton town for those bathers wanting repast.

Just popped in to escape the wind and rain whilst waiting for my relatives in the area. Thought sod it, I’ll have something to eat whilst here. The selection may be sparse to some but the ladies were happy for me to substitute an ingredient for another. I had a cheese and onion omelette with chips and a pot of decaf tea while here. The omelette was cooked to absolute perfection (my dad and uncle are chefs) and thus I’m very critical. But the young lady cooked my food amazingly and I had to let her know of this. If I ever find myself in Essex again I shall endeavour to return here for another heavenly omelette and a smile from the three lovely women running the place.

I went here with my family for lunch. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and kind to my 15 month old granddaughter, which of course made the whole meal a great experience for all of us. The food was freshly cooked and very well presented. My granddaughter tried bacon and ice cream (not together!) for the first time and both were great hits. What a great place to have a relaxing lunch at a very affordable price. We can’t praise it enough and the ‘noisy book’ to keep my granddaughter occupied while she waited for her food was much appreciated. The Potato Shack has a 5 star hygiene rating which is also very important to me when choosing somewhere to eat.

We happened to walk past on our way from the car park to the seafront and popped in for lunch. What a lucky find , it's a great little place with a good menu choice including breakfast and vegetarian options and even a gluten free curry. Our tea order arrived straight away in big mugs . The menu is all home made food and a board of filling options can be for paninis or jacket potato toppings. I liked the big choice including things like egg mayo, prawns, garlic mushrooms, Bolognese as well as the more usual cheese, beans etc. I had jacket potato with 2 toppings for £3.99. very nice indeed. My husband opted for roast dinner ( only on Sundays). Standard was £5 and the large he opted for was £7. What excellent value, a very generous portion of lamb; big dish of potatoes ( mashed, roast, Yorkshire pudding, roast parsnips) plus a big dish of veg ( cabbage, carrots and cauliflower cheese) and a large jug of gravy. My husband was very happy and said that it was probably the best roast lamb he had ever eaten, tasty, non fatty, beautifully moist. I wish we had had room for one of the traditional puddings, golden syrup or spotted dick as I bet they were good. It's a small place but excellent service, value and portion size. It set us up for a lovely walk along the seafront to Clacton. I wish it had been open on the way back so we could have gone back in for a mug of tea and the missed pudding. Don't miss it of you are in Walton on the Naze.

It was gutted by fire last year and so has been completely redecorated throughout and is nice and clean and bright. The food is fantastic and is all home cooked and fresh. This place is the best food in Walton town,I was going to say for a cafe but I don’t class it as a cafe more of a restaurant. Its home cooked food of good quality.I haven’t eaten a meal there yet but seen it come out and it is just like you would cook at home.Ive eaten breakfast there though and it’s the best in the town by far ,proper sausages not cheep ones that are pre cooked then re heated that come out completely Brown ,you know the ones most cafes serve them like it!Proper bacon, not cheap stuff but like you get from the butcher, hand cut bread most of the time if they have not ran out and no skimping on it in sandwiches. The sausage sandwiches are full of good quality sausage freshly cooked and is literally the best sausage sandwich I’ve eaten in a place for a long time and two pounds fifty .Such a quaint cosy place and freindly staff .Lots of placesnow say home cooked food but not like this .Such good value for money ,they could make more profit if they sold cheaper ingredients but they don’t because good food at an affordable price is their business. You could easily miss it but don’t or you will miss out.Ive had breakfast and lunch in all the cafes now and no real difference between them, the usual fast food,ok if you like it but go upmarket a bit for no extra cost and eat down to earth home cooking which tastes and looks better than your average high st cafe.Breakfast and lunch nowhere else for us now

Me voy a visitar? . Excelente relación calidad-precio. Pruébalo. Usted no será decepcionado.

We have been here before and had a very good meal, last time was average so for us its somewhere in between. The main reason we had to wait quite a while for our food, when it came the food was fine. They do some specials, treats etc probably the biggest drawback no loos of its own so you have to pop to public toilets just few minutes away but a bit of a pain with kids. Service friendly, omelettes, baked spuds, salads, roasts even, chips and whatever burgers etc Very small inside but pleasant, quaint but tiny.
