The Portreeve's Tafarn in Carmarthenshire

Had my first meal out since lockdown restrictions relaxed and it was excellent. Sat outside and highly recommend the Pork Melt,. Prompt service, delicious food, good select of beers. Well worth a visit.

Honestly, I have never been more horrified by the way I was treated at this restaurant.We sat down, orders taken, waitress's LOVELY! Cannot fault the waiting staff at all. 2 meals for £15 - bargain. £5 extra for steak (which was massive no issue there) £6 extra for salmon, this is where my story begins. We were asked how our meals were by the waitress, I advised her they were delicious however we felt that the extra £6 for the salmon was steep as the salmon was about the size of a fish finger (tasted nice but not worth the extra cost). She thanked us for the feedback.From across the room I could see her telling the Female Manager our feedback, manger then - I can only describe it as storming - stormed towards the table and aggressively said "Are you kidding me?" Certainly not the way to address a MINOR comment to a paying customer. No matter what I said I was attacked with swearing and comments like "You clearly have never worked in hospitality" (one of us owned a restaurant).She stormed away from the table and into the kitchen.After our meal we just wanted to leave. We paid IN FULL and left the waitress staff a LARGE TIP - as this was not a reflection on them.2 of us sharpish-ly left the restaurant as we were angry about the way we were spoken to by a manager. Outside we were subject to staring and finger gestures from their friends in the bar, through the window that the managers had been drinking with. The other 2 collected there things. As they were leaving, they were ESCORTED out by the male manager, told to get out and never come back. The male manager then made his way to me outside, took off his mask and began shouting in my face. I felt threatened and disgusted! We were then told to F*** OFF back to England!!! We are from Pembrokeshire - We're local and are absolutely appalled that restaurant owners in a tourist hot spot are this rude to ANYONE this way let alone potential holiday goers when our economy relies on tourism!! Shame on you!

Had takeaway Sunday lunch on 2 occasions. Both have been excellent. Fresh vegetables, generous portions, fab Yorkshires and plenty of gravy. Would highly recommend. Will deffo be back for more.

Booked in here for a birthday with the family where do we begin... from the moment you walk in your treated like family the service we had was excellent everyone was really friendly and helpful the recommendations for dishes were spot on every one of our party had something different and we were all very happy the food was delicious, really good home cooked comfort food. Wonderful evening we will definitely be going back.

I have always wanted to eat there but it was awful, the whole place smelt stale and old.Really needs a good clean, get rid of all that tat from by gone years!only 3 veggie options and 1 was off the menu, £15 paid for what was no more than a tin of tomato'sStaff polite but owner who proudly introduced herself a s such needs a big re-think sadly, such a shame as I high high expectations :(

We were recommended by our receptionist who said they did the best Sunday roast in the area and they were right. The team was friendly, made us feel very welcome and the food was excellent. Not the biggest of menus but the quantity and quality was very good. We’ll be heading back there on our next visit to Laugharne.

We were surprised by having to go to through the busy bar (high spirits there) to go to and out of the restaurant area. The staff wore masks , so maybe they were smiling underneath, but on the whole they were fairly brusque and not too bothered about covid regulations. The food was very underwhelming compared with the reviews we had read. It was pub grub: easy grills and the rest freezer to microwave or boil in a bag.

Nice meal and I have to say served really hot. I had the chicken and Penderyn pate which was nice and tasty followed by the cod in prosciutto around a Welsh rarebit, an unusual combination which worked well. The service was first class , friendly and attentive.Service was excellent.

Very friendly - clearly a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Food was standard fare, but well done and quick to arrive, so cannot fault. Worthwhile booking as they close up early. Fairly limited beer choices, but the Gower Gold hits the spot after a day cycling up and down the hills!

We had a really nice meal here, the waitresses were really friendly and the food was tasty and delivered at a good pace. The chicken curry and beef bourginough went down very well.However, this social distancing and overall management of COVID was terrible!! They did have antibacterial gel available but it was more the friendly staff that showed little training. None of the menus were being wiped before or after being used, none of the staff wore masks and were working in close proximity, as they cleared the table they were literally leaning across us causing us to have to move sharply back. Although it is awkward, a simple request for us to hand them plates to keep as much social distancing going as possible is not much to ask.As I say though, the staff were lovely but management need to have a look at the specific training for how they manage customers safely for both themselves and the customer.P.s. sausage/nuggets chips and beans should not be the only options for children in the midst of a health (as well as COVID) pandemic. Even spag Bol would help

Very friendly staff, typical pub food, but expensive for what was served. Super atmosphere x lots of friendly smiling people. Nice to see.

We ate here 2 nights in a row and enjoyed the food and great service. All socially distanced and felt very safe, and the staff were very friendly.

We ordered 4 meals which took around 45mins to arrive. The burger was good, but the cod was solid and looked like it was ready 40 mins earlier and had been left under the heater Lamp. Should have returned it, but didn’t want to wait another 30 mins for a replacement. Other dishes ok. Certainly over priced for the quality. Would sooner cook in the caravan, but you might be ok eating here if you order the right dishes that the kitchen can cook. Too many options on menu I would say rather than concentrating on consistent quality.

We went as had passed this several times during our stay. After a long day of sight seeing and the beach we called in and asked for a table.Quickly this was sorted. The menu was locally sourced. We were not disappointed. Beautiful fresh and so tasty. We have been for a few meals in the area this was by far the best. Children’s menu wasn’t massive but we selected and adult meal which was spilt between them on separate plates. Staff were lovely and friendly with the kids and talking about themselves . Lovely setting reminded us of french travels as the cell tower rang for 8pm and the painted buildings.We would recommend this to anyone.Ps puddings looked amazing but we couldn’t fit any in.

In a pretty cobbled street 150 yards from the town centre. Friendly staff, tasty food. We sat outside (the only option available in coronavirus times) in warm evening sunshine.

Came here for our wedding anniversary and was beautiful! I had the king prawns for a starter and they were best prawns I've ever tried! My husband had the home made pate which was lush! Our mains were cooked beautifully.. Compliments to the chef! The mixed grill is recommended!.. Reasonably priced and great customer service! Thank you!

We go to Laugharne at least three times a year for about 5 nights,have always used The Portreeve restaurant every night that it is open and have been extremely satisfied.After looking at recent reviews we thought it may have declined somewhat.What a load of rubbish,dont understand the latest reviews.The food is of a very good standard always piping hot,the staff are very polite helpful and professional from the manageress to the outstanding serving staff especially Paula and lovely chef called Curry Craig.Can not wait to return to your restaurant again soon.Stephen & Clair (Tenby)

Visited for Sunday lunch, food ok good portions, but no atmosphere, no other people in the place except for staff. Not used to that at lunchtime but this is Wales not England.

Very strange surroundings, forgotten requests, cold food (the table next to us had hot food but they were friends of the owner). Such a shame, we had been really looking forward to a good Sunday lunch.

We have visited the portreeve on many occasions when in laugharne and the standard of food have always been amazing.What we didn’t know before we booked that it was under new management When we walked in there was only four other people dining which we thought strange because it’s always full when we have gone previously.The lovely same waitress as before took our order mine was the gammon my husband chicken chasseur it was The thinnest piece of gammon that I couldn’t cut it was so tough with a black tomato with chips that had seen the deep fat fryer over and over again The chicken chasseur was a glorified chicken leg with a tin of tomatoes poured over it in a soup dish absolutely disgusting we sent it back the waitress was more than embarrassed about it didn’t charge us or for the drinks that we had The owners or the chef didn’t have the decency to apologise only the waitress Will never ever go there again while these people got it

After visiting here a number of times in the past and it always being such a good atmosphere, great food and great service we was awful disappointed when we returned this weekend that the new management have ruined the place! The atmosphere have gone, the menu is awful and the food is a absolute disgrace. Myself my partner and grandparents food was all equally terrible my grandmother sent hers back straight away as she couldn’t even cut in to the gammon, the chips were from a smelly deep fat fryer that haven’t been cleaned for ages the chips were black! Not only that but my Granch found a battery, yes a battery! Floating around in his dish, we was so lucky he didn’t swallow or choke on it it could of been a lot lot worse! Especially if it was a child, the waitress who have been there with the previous management was very apologetic even though it wasn’t her fault, the chef or owners didn’t have any morals to come out and apologise. We went from there feeling ill and disgusted! Only thing that’s stayed the same there is the lovely happy waitress! Other than that it’s appalling! We come to llaugharne through the year and will never be stepping foot in that place again!

Found this lovely restaurant on our holiday and been in there today for Sunday lunch with my Husband, Daughter, Baby Son and two Dogs.Excellent service, extremely friendly, food was excellent good portions and nice and hot.Dog Friendly couldn't fault it, Waitresses were lovely .Carla

We went here twice and had starter and Lambshanks first time and Chicken Chasseur and Dessert for second meal. Both wonderful, felt full after 2 courses. Service friendly and good.

Call in the portreeve for Sunday lunch. We all had beef and it was cooked to perfection. The meat was tender and the vegetables were nicely cooked. Staff were friendly and polite and could not do enough for you. Will definitely be returning on our next visit to laugharne. Highly recommended.

I visited yesterday with my sister and we had a lovely Sunday lunch. I had the roast beef and my sister had the vegetarian Glamorgan crumble. Everything was beautifully cooked and the bread and butter pudding is particularly recommended. The staff are friendly and helpful

Very disappointing, will be not returning, ordered the chicken could not taste the lemon or tarragon at all, the chicken over cooked and the roast potatoes burnt, vegetables bland, and not presented well,

We came here on a recommendation from a local. Well all I can say is what a load of pants. Firstly drinks order was wrong and then when it was right one of the drinks was flat. Then when it was replaced (a soda and lime) it just tasted of soda.

We visited The Portreeves for the first time under the new management. Having eaten here many times before, we were apprehensive about whether the high standards of food and service had been maintained. There were some new choices on the menu but we were very pleased to find that the food was of the same high quality that is synonymous with The Portreeves. Maintaining the quality has, no doubt, been helped by retaining some of the key staff, including the same chef. We ordered the beef bourgignon and broad bean & mint risotto, both dishes were delicious and we look forward to our next visit.

Shocking lunch. Burnt potatoes,mushy veg, yorkshire pudding soggy,sent it back and walked out, will not return.

I asked for a bottle of corona beer, but they said as they were retiring, they had none. The food was very average, although the mussels were the correct size and taste.

Quirky, unexpected and marvellous! This little place offers eccentric but efficient service, gloriously delicious food and an atmosphere guaranteed to cheer. We ate in the evening, turning up without a reservation and enjoy a lovely meal in a quirky yet comfortable setting.

We had a good meal here - lovely fresh food including mussels, tuna, steak, olives.

We had a beautiful meal here, staff very friendly and welcoming. They even went out of their way to ensure our grumpy dog was comfortable. Would recommend, meal was first class.

Tucked away in the town this former bus garage is a must to find, but be quick because the energetic landlord is retiring shortly, and what a loss that will be to the area. The town is loosing one of its genuine personalities.

The owner of this pub is a Llanelli version of John Cooper Clarke. Great music playing. Lovely food and service. A very memorable experience.

My partner and I are here last week and had a wonderful meal. The food was the best I’ve had for quite some time! Lovely, relaxed and attentive staff/owners. Relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. First time we had visited but made to feel like we were valued regulars. Just a lovely experience all round. Will definitely be going back.

Had the pleasure of eating at this restaurant 11th of August. The food was exquisite,and Stan really is the man! Have never had so much fun as well as good food in a restaurant. Seriously cannot recommend it highly enough. The staff were so friendly, and after leaving the restaurant the lady we payed the bill to came running out after us as we had overpaid by £20 as there must have been a note stuck to another one!!! We will definitely be back, the food is of a very high quality and very reasonably priced.Thank you Stan and staff for a lovely evening and fabulous memories.

Ate here for a treat on the last night of a great week. And it was a treat. The 'home' sauce on the mussels was so tasty, and the mussels sweet. Grilled fish and lamb for mains..not together! We really enjoyed our choices. Decent wine and a playlist in the background that took me back to my youth. A great evening!

Hospitable “Stan and his purple wife” are perfect hosts. The greatest care was taken over my onion intolerance and their company was fascinating.

We came for the Laugharne festival and to be honest was very disappointed but the Portreeve certainly wasn’t.

Friendly staff, amazing atmosphere and even better food! Sixth year staying in the area never been before, but will be back! Will be booking for Sunday lunch for next year.

Just love the quirky nature of this restaurant which is a treat for all the senses. Not least of these is the food which is excellent in terms of quantity and quality and choice. Very friendly and welcoming staff add to a very enjoyable evening meal. Recommended.

The staff were really friendly and good and our mussles were excellent. However the main courses were bland and disappointing. The vegetables were also plain, boring and fogettable. There wasn't anything bad enough to complain about and maybe we were just unlucky but we did not want to return.

We were staying in Laugharne for a week, and ended up eating at The Portreeve's Tavern on 3 evenings. Why - because of the quality of the food, plus the excellent service. The daily specials included many different fish options, but I would recommend the Sea Bass. Another evening I tried the Surf and Turf - not my usual choice, but turned out to be my favourite meal with a mixture of Rump Steak, King Prawns and Scampi.

A great find, we rang to book a table to be told they couldn’t do anything at the time we wanted but 5 minutes later rang back to say they had managed to find a table which we were very impressed by. It was a busy night but the food was great, the staff were very friendly and its dog friendly, we will be returning again next time visiting that area. A very extensive menu with so many great dishes it was difficult to choose what to have all sounded nice.

Quite by chance having found that our chosen restaurant in Tenby had some issue and was closed we fell across this restaurant and we enjoyed the whole experience so much that we booked again for the following night which we enjoyed as much. Very friendly staff in the family run restaurant and particularly the owner who is somewhat of a character!

My husband and myself always go to the Portreeve when we stay in Laugharne the staff are friendly and the food is outstanding as always, we’ve recommended friends to try there who have and they praise it highly as well. Would recommend trying it as it’s a 100% fantastic place to dine

Always have our Sunday dinner here when on our weeks holiday, even book before we come as usually fully booked. Always lovely food and great staff. We highly recommend a visit here, have never been disappointed with food or service.

We have visited this restaurant for carvery. It's amazing. Beautiful food. Never had frozen veg as one review has claimed.

We stayed in the village for the week and on the last night for a treat went for a meal, and we are glad we chose Portreeve, the host was so nice and welcoming and quite an entertaining guy, going to everyone and making sure all was good for everyone and having a good chat with people.

What a restaurant and even better service,especially if you want to be treated like a third class citizen,my wife and her mum and dad were unfortunate enough to attempt to have a meal at this restaurant,we asked what the menu was and was told it was a carvery with soup to start,as we had eaten earlier we was that hungry and my wife’s parents suggested we had there soup,good idea we’ll that’s what we thought.

To celebrate Father’s Day, we booked a table at this popular little tavern in the lovely village of Laugharne. We have been before and the team there, did not disappoint. Stan the host was on top form and my son thought he was amazing. There was an issue with another customer who was rude and was asked to leave. We carried on, it was all handled well.

Used to come here years ago when run by the previous owners. First visit under this ownership. Meal ok but when you spend £16 or £17.00 on a plate of food you do expect fresh vegatables, not supermarket frozen carrots. I think that's poor.

Stumbled across this hidden gem (behind the clock tower). We were looking for Sunday lunch. Not normally a fan of a carvery lunch but this was exceptional. Every part was like home cooking. The choice of 3 meets was delicious.

We went for dinner on a Sunday night after a day travelling. There were not many restaurants open so our choice was limited. We were shown to a table in an area that had a few diners but it all looked a bit tired! Our waitress was friendly and brought drinks quite promptly. We chose the lamb shanks and my husband had the special of the day which was a chicken breast with mushroom tarragon sauce. Everything was ok but not great. The veges were a bit limp and the chicken a bit dry.

We had a fantastic evening at the Portreeve Tafarn. Wonderful hosts and gorgeous food. Highly recommend this hidden gem! The steak was the best I’ve eaten in years! Delicious Brecon gin as well! We all thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and would love to come back next time we visit!

Excellent food lots of choice and very friendly staff. Reasonable prices for food. Also do a nice pint of Brains bitter.

We visited The Portreeve last weekend for Sunday lunch. The restaurant was full of character and the staff were all really friendly. The carvery lunch was great with a choice of 3 meats and loads of veg and accompaniments. Chocolate fudge cake had to be taken home with us as we were too full to eat it at the time!

We have eaten here a few times whilst on holiday and returned again for another lovely meal, friendly staff and very pleasant place to eat

Having been to Laugharne a few times we had driven past ‘the Portreeve’ without seeing it tucked away; on this occasion it had been recommended so we parked (free) down by the sea and walked up. So pleased that we did as the staff were delightful, happy surroundings and a delicious meal reasonably priced.

Having had an appalling experience in Browns we were initially relieved to find that they served food and let us bring our dog in. They turned our evening around and were very accommodating when we'd made a mistake with an order. Completely flexible, accommodating, attentive and friendly. Food was also good value and tasty. Thank you.

My wife, my mother in law and I stayed in Laugharne (pronounced 'Larne') last week and whilst there aren't masses of things to do in Laugharne itself, a simply 'must do' trip is to the brilliant Portreeves of Laugharne Restaurant.

Popped in on the off chance, was made most welcome by the waitress Paula who made me feel at home. Excellent, swift and friendly service. Had the trout, very tasty. All in all, an excellent experience. Would recommend.

Went to The Portreeve Tavern a couple of years ago and gave it 5* then, so had no hesitation going back again during this visit to Laugharne. We were not disappointed. Even in the off season, the restaurant was busy, but the service good, quick and attentive.

We always eat here when we come to Laugharne for two reasons, the wonderful food and Stan. Today we had pate and the garlic mushrooms to start and the fillet steak and tiger prawns for main. Beautifully cooked as always and with wonderful conversation. Highly recommended. A must if you’re in the locality.

Stayed at Browns Hotel but decided to eat at The Portreeve and so glad we did. Stan and the Girls are amazing, made us feel so welcome. Bit of a character is our Stan. Food is very good, and good value. We are back in Browns soon and will also be returning to the Portreeve.

We’ve been to the Portreeve’s before but not for a good while. Now I’m wondering why it’s not more often!! Anyway, it was fab - we had duck a l’orange and the barramundi from the Captain’s Table board. Both were absolutely great and we cleared our plates for the first time in ages.

We have been here a number of times and the food has been amazing every time. Our son and daughter-in-law had their wedding meal here also and we had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Last time we had a meal here it was superb you could not fault it. But last time we came to Laugharne it was fully booked. So this time we were in Laugharne we were really looking forward to a superb meal again, but we were sadly disappointed. There was no atmosphere on a Friday night there was only 2 other families dining. The garlic cheese bread was lovely. But then we ordered 3 mixed grills last time the meat was succulent and of very good quality. Sadly this time the meat was full of fat. My son ordered a dessert which looked lovely but he said the fruit on the top was sour. Liked the 60’s music though. So 2 stars for the music and the garlic cheese bread. Sadly we won’t be returning next time

The food is fresh, locally sourced, cooked to perfection and there's plenty of it. With beef, turkey and pork all our family of 5 had their favourites. The staff/owners are very friendly and welcoming and the decor and ambience are just right. They have a full a la carte Monday to Saturday we will be back without the children for an evening meal soon.

We dined here last week and enjoyed the ambiance, service and food. The steak I ate was one of the best I have ever eaten and it was local, as was the fish the others ate. We really enjoyed our evening.

A lovely place for a carvery. The quality of the meat was outstanding. The pork was locally reared. The turkey moist and cooked to perfection. Would have liked more choice of veg but the roast potatoes were wonderful!

We couldn’t have chosen a nicer place to eat. With 2 vegetarians 1 gluten and dairy free we were a tricky bunch. Helpful,friendly and beautiful food. Would definitely go back again and recommend to anyone.

Our party of 6 dined here on Saturday evening and the food was outstanding but the service was even better! Nothing was too much trouble for these kind ladies, they fully accommodated our dairy and gluten free needs and were so friendly.

Been going to this restaurant over the years, whenever we are in the area. As always the service is very good, and the food is excellent. Staff always make you feel very welcome and are very accommodating lovely restaurant.

Welcoming staff and very chatty chef. Soup tasty and carvery plentiful. Vegetables too cooked for me, but gravy excellent. Eclectic mix of items on display. Overall a good meal, wine prices reasonable and wine good. Would visit again.

We have been coming to Laugharne for 23 years and always go to Portreeves at least twice every time. Always friendly. Always fabulous food.
