The Porthole at the Bayview Hotel in Coleraine

This hotel should be a 5 star, or more if possible. We had a lovely stay, staff in all areas were very friendly and polite. Room clean and spacious, dinner was amazing from start to finish, service excellent, breakfast was plentiful, great choices on menu, also fresh fruit, yoghurt cereals and everything you would expect from a 5 star. Cooked breakfast very tasty and hot. Car park out at the back plus spaces at the front on the street. We will be back again without hesitation, felt very spoilt on our stay.

Éramos 2. El restaurante está ubicado en un hotel. Fuimos a cenar así que no veíamos el mar por que no está ubicado al lado de la playa. La carta es pequeña, como en toda Irlanda, y ,bueno, es poco vistosa. Nos llamó la atención que, estando al lado del mar, sólo ofrecieran 2-3 platos de pescado. Pedimos 2 sopa de pescado. Te las sirven con su soda bread y mantequilla (con es la costumbre). Después 1 gambas rebozadas y un plato de curry pero que no recuerdo qué llevaba. Pedimos el aderezo de arroz que apenas comimos, resultaba muy soso. Te sirven las gambas con patatas fritas. Le quité el rebozado a las gambas por que no les hace falta. Bebimos 2 copas de vino blanco, 1 botella de agua y probamos el limoncelo y el arancelo que hacen en la zona. Pagamos unos 90 euros.

Nous nous sommes arrêtés dans ce restaurant (d’un hôtel) pour déjeuner en famille après la visite du château Dunluce et avant la visite de la chaussée des géants. Le restaurant dispose d’une belle vue sur la mer depuis la plupart des tables. Nous avons été bien accueillis et avons été agréablement surpris par le rapport qualité / prix bien meilleur que dans d’autres restaurants d’Ulster. Les enfants aussi ont bien mangé. Mieux vaut réserver.

Our family enjoyed several meals here during a two-night stay: Breakfast (fantastic), dinner (very good) and dessert (excellent). The bar and restaurant is very busy - clearly locals and others seek this place out. Food is served piping hot - almost too hot! - and is well-flavored. Do make reservations because it was very busy.

Went to celebrate a significant milestone birthday with family. I use a wheelchair but wasn’t given a choice of where I wanted to sit at the table or asked if I wished to transfer on to a chair. Not given choice of gin or glass. I find large balloon glasses impossible to handle. Starter was mediocre. Lukewarm tart with beetroot and goat’s cheese. Wilted rocket on top. Main served in a bowl, on top of a plate. Difficult to eat with cutlery provided. Warm evening but no air conditioning. Very uncomfortable. Service was better than meal although no one checked if we were ok or needed anything. Haven’t been there in years and it will be years before I think about returning.

Really good quality food and exceptional service though out. Good wine selection all in all a very enjoyable experience

We often come to this restaurant when we are on holiday in Portrush. Weren't quite sure about it last September however this time it was very good. A word of warning, the portions are huge so do come hungry. The ribs were almost enough on their own. Stunningly beautiful views across the bay from the restaurant, service friendly and efficient.

Overall, quite disappointing sadly. I’ll begin with the positives - the location is fantastic if you’re staying on the Causeway or visiting Giants Causeway. The views from the restaurant are stunning! The interior decor is lovely, it is nicely done inside and the atmosphere was good. The service was friendly! However, although the servers were all very nice, there was definite chaos in the kitchen… Our leak and potato soup for starter came out luke warm, borderline cold so had to be sent back to be heated. It was bland in flavour and watery, completely lacked texture. I went for the scampi for main course. It didn’t have much flavour also, it was just basic frozen scampi. I was curious about having it with stir fry veg and the salt and chilli, but in reality I found it an odd combo. Then the garlic potatoes as the side choice…they were more like wedges/chips than potatoes so inaccurately named on the menu. They weren’t fantastic. I just found myself leaving half of it in the end as it wasn’t doing much for me. Also, everyone’s sides came out separate to the mains and had to wait for them a bit too long. Really it should’ve come out all together and hot, not waiting for it while the main food cooled down. Again, another sign of kitchen chaos perhaps. This establishment scores a 3/11 Jimbo Points.

From the menu, and even how it was laid out, we were prepared for a perfectly acceptable seafood dinner at the Porthole in Portballintrae at the height of the Easter Weekend. In fact it was distinctly a cut above that - several dishes of real flair, well cooked with excellent ingredients. Service on a very busy Good Friday evening was warm and attentive. Hard it call it hidden, but it is definitely a gem.

Went on Friday evening. Busy. Staff attentive and pleasant. Lovely lighting in restaurant. First course ‘soup of the day’ tasty . Second course fish pie- very large serving with plenty of fish but none or little sauce . My partner had a steak which was gristly. Disappointing as have had much better there. Similar story from friends who recently visited. Who is in the kitchen? It’s a pity as decor and atmosphere excellent

Saturday lunchtime..called in for lunch. Seated quickly…staff lovely. Fish pie was fabulous!!! So tasty. We all enjoyed our food choices. Thank you Bayview Hotel for such a wonderful lunch. Definitely five stars!

Enjoyed a lovely Saturday evening at the Bayview. The hotel always has a warm festive feel. The food was excellent, crab starter followed by my favourite choice, the Red Thai chicken curry. Well priced and perfect portions. The whole team were attentive and friendly. We were particularly impressed with Tom, a young trainee who was showing great potential!

Ate at the restaurant with my mother last week and unfortunately we did not enjoy our experience at all. I ordered the salt and chilli scampi and the accompanying veggies were so salty that they were inedible. My mother ordered the bacon burger and the bacon just looked looked like undercooked marsh. Would not recommend and will not revisit.

We like this restaurant but it seems to have gone downhill. The goats cheese starter was small and I mean minute! Mains were fine but the summer fruits tart dessert was mainly large chunks of rhubarb. Very disappointing meal.

I couldn't recommend here enough. We where on a family trip for a week to the North Coast and we first ate here as a family of 7. They were taking good precautionary measures against Covid-19 with plenty of space between customers. Service was amazing...

Excellent restaurant, from taking temperature of customers prior to entry to the very attentive staff and well laid out restaurant. The menu was Good and catered for all tastes. The view out over Portballintrae harbour was stunning.

We had dinner last night in the Porthole and the food was lovely. We were impressed how the tables were a good distant apart. We had to have our temperature taken on arrival and use sanitiser for our hands. We liked that there was a foot pump to dispense the sanitiser. Staff were wearing masks or visors. We shared a starter of crab and pea pannacotta which was delicious and well presented.My husband had salt and chilli scampi with a generous portion of French fries and I had a Thai red curry. The staff were so attentive and pleasant. We were very impressed

Not even average from start to finish. There was a temperature check on the way in as part of their Covid restrictions but the place was so hot and crowded it's a wonder everyone didn't give a false reading. The service was poor, we were left waiting for a menu for 20 minutes, in the end we had to ask for them. The menu had a fairly poor selection. The food took ages to come and tasted ok but a seafood curry really ought to have more than one type of fish in it, otherwise just call it what it was, a single white fish curry and the blandest one my partner ever tasted at that. I've had better food down the local pub. And then we got the bill. We were strangers to Portballintrae and it seemed to be our only option. So sorry that we didn't try somewhere else nearby. Would neither recommend this place or return.

Our last Sunday lunch was at the Bayview in February before lockdown restrictions were imposed and eating out became impossible.It was a great relief to be able to book again and enjoy a meal out in safety. Anti-Covid measures are in place such as a one way flow through the dining room, temperature checks on arrival, sanitizing measures throughout and staff wearing PPE. This has raised our confidence considerable that we will be able to return again soon.The menu has been reduced but we enjoyed a helping of scampi and fries which was ample.

Excellent meal and service. Table of 4 booked, including one vegetarian and one vegan .. everyone extremely satisfied and catered for. Couldn’t recommend enough! Fab house red too! Can’t wait to visit again.

Such a disappointment for family meal and the Bayview has gone from mediocre to poor. Post lockdown revised menu has very odd combinations for starters like crab panna cotta ? I actually couldn’t pick a starter since none appealed. Main course bit much better than you would see in a high street cafe - burger, scampi, fish and chips .... the garlic potatoes I got as a side were hard and dry. The salt and chilli scampi soggy as opposed to crispie - non deep fires options are few. It’s over priced too - my husbands run of the mill burger and chips £17. Service good but we won’t be back. Menu needs a complete overhaul. It’s never been great but is worse post lockdown. That location doesn’t make up for poor food.

Another meal at The Bayview. This time, a big family celebration. Despite the fact the restaurant was full and very busy, we got great service. The food was delicious and served wonderfully, though I expected that having eaten here many times before. The hotel takes COVID-19 seriously, which was reassuring, and every customer is temperature checked on the way in. Likewise there are screens between some tables to maintain safe distance between customers. None of these measures felt intrusive or stressful in any way. Overall, another excellent meal. I will be back.

Stopped at this restaurant/cafe for coffee and scones. Beautifully decorated and clean, with amazing views out to the ocean. Staff were friendly and helpful. Coffee and scones tasted great and were reasonably priced. Social distancing was maintained (temperature checked upon entry to building). Would definitely recommend.

First outing since 'lockdown'. The restaurant was set up to comply with guidance and legislation. However, everything was done without any drama and the staff went out of their way to make the customer feel relaxed and welcome. The measures were applied unobtrusively. Not a terribly exciting menu by the Porthole's standard, but that didn't matter. It was great to be out again. Full marks.

Just enjoyed a beautiful stay in the hotel with my wife for a BIG birthday of mine. Our room was excellent having been met by very pleasant reception staff.4 friends joined us for dinner and Paul met and looked after us. The dining staff were very pleasant and attentive and we all had a delightful meal with duck, scampi, steak and a fish pie ordered and all enjoyed by everyone. I have used and enjoyed this hotel for many years and will continue to do so. Well done everyone.

Amazing food , great service and all this overlooking the bay . We had the scampi and sirloin mains with chips , garlic chips and onion rings . The food was perfectly cooked and seasoned with great flavours , restaurant is big in size and open plan with great views of the ocean . Top notch

My husband and I stayed in the Bayview for our Wedding Anniversary recently and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Our room was upgraded and after a beautiful meal there was a box of chocolates and card waiting for us in our room. We had a wonderful anniversary

We were just driving by on our way to the Giant's Causeway and saw this place. Granted, it was January and it was a cloudy day. Still, we got a table by the window and the views were just spectacular. The service was excellent and I just can't say enough about the food!! My husband had fish & chips. I can't remember what I ordered, but it had some kind of delicious sauce on it!! This was truly a memorable dining experience and so glad we stopped in. I HIGHLY recommend!

We called in for a lunch but hadn’t booked. The restaurant was very busy on a Saturday afternoon but the waitress was very friendly and we got a table beside the window. It was such a lovely dining experience from start to finish. All of the staff were extremely friendly. I had the seafood chowder and the mini wheaten loaf was delicious and seemed to be straight out of the oven. The wine was first class. Overall a beautiful place to dine even on a wet and windy afternoon. What a view....what a place to eat!!

We live a hundred yards from the Bayview Hotel and would drop in and out for a drink now and again. Two weeks ago we decided to do 'lunch'.... What a good idea!We had a the Crab starter (shared) which was light and tasty to start. Karen had the fish pie which was the best......I had the Steak which was done to perfection and just a brilliant meal. Hever Lee pints great....Overall a great relaxing afternoon.Trevor thanks again....staff brilliant and where else would you get it!Anyone who finds fault here , sorry where else is as good!

I went to the Bayview restaurant with my parents for dinner.

Just up on the north coast for an xmas break and called into this place for brunch only to be told we have run out of coffee. Too much trouble for them to make some coffee. Not friendly at all. Wont be back this way and reccomend you look elsewhere for a bite on a sunday morning.

This sea front venue has been renovated to a very high standard, expanding the seating to view the panoramic view of the bay. Service and food to a high standard. Worthy of a visit just to sample the atmosphere or a meal. Highly recommend . Good atmosphere. Decorated for Christmas so a festive feel. Well done to Trevor the manager and staff

I used to come here after playing golf with my father in law on his home course of Royal Portrush. That was over 20 years ago. The Bayview was an old-fashioned place with a formal dining room and limited views of the scenery outside. Having returned, it’s hard to believe that it is the same place! Heavy walls at the front have been tastefully removed leaving an exquisite dining room with large windows showing all that is great about Portballintrae. The bar area also benefits from the windows as the light extend into it too. The food was very nice and looking online at the rooms, they have had the same attention to detail as the public areas have in this grand / lovingly updated hotel.

When I think of Ireland, using the term "Irish Cuisine" seems like an oxymoron. This place had a great menu of interestingly prepared food. I had the carmelized onion and goat cheese tartlet. It was wonderful!! Nice view of the bay, too.

During my stay at the Bayview I had breakfasts and dinners at the Porthole. The food is excellent, service good, prices quite reasonable.

Princess treated me to a lovely birthday meal in the Porthole Restaurant. We had a table by the window with the most amazing view out over the bay in Portballantrae.The meal was excellent, beautifully presented and pleasant helpful staff. I had salmon while Princess had the steak, both were cooked to perfection and delicious deserts to follow. All in all a great experience of dining out and can highly recommend The Porthole restaurant to anyone wanting a meal out or for a special occasion. We have booked a couple of days in the Bay View for an anniversary in the new year.

Have stayed and eaten here many times. This time, I was staying in the area and had dinner on Sunday evening. The quality is superb; the food is delicious and there’s a very varied menu. I had a trio of pork with champ (mashed potatoes with spring onion - or scallions as they’re called locally). It was amazingly good. The ambience, service, and view is all great. Highly recommended.

The recently renovated restaurant has a lovely location and wonderful view over the harbour and bay. It is very tastefully furnished.

I would just love this place to polish up on their food and service. Prices don't bother me when the service is good and food memorable but something just isn't working. I live within walking distance and have seen the standards in the restaurant drop so much. 3 years ago I could not have found fault. Attentive staff and great food. This last time on my birthday we thought let's give it another go. Unfortunately it didn't work. Shown to table, not offered drink service, meal thrown down on table (actually thought plate had cracked) presentation and food well below price and 4* service. It wasn't busy so that's no excuse. Very disappointing.

Les restaurants d'Irlande du Nord ne se singularisent pas toujours par leur raffinement. The Porthole surprend donc agréablement avec des mets soignés et une recherche certaine dans la présentation. il est recommandé de réserver car l'endroit est populaire. Service de qualité.

A lovely spot close to Giant’s Causeway and Dunluce castle. Quite an excellent lunch with family, with a very nice bay view. Good food, nicely presented, right prices (lower than usual) and very clean place (perfect restrooms too). Very kind people serving.

Disappointing dinner - braised beef dry, triple cooked chips barely cooked once, coffee undrinkable, service pedestrian - not sure if it was an off night or an over rated restaurant or both.

Called in here with friends for a drink after a day at the Open at Royal Portrush. Understandably, we were thirsty! But it’s one of those bars which is completely and irritatingly surrounded by high barstools, all of them occupied by drinkers who were as usual very reluctant to make any room for those trying to attract the attention of the bar staff.

Decided to visit for lunch after hearing about the recent renovations. In fairness much brighter than before and views over the bay are magnificent. Ordered sandwiches for lunch. Was expecting something more than limp medium sliced pan loaf (and cheap bread at that) and Tesco value tortilla chips. Also why the small green side salad if you don't get a knife or fork or napkin? How are you supposed to eat it? A total ripoff at £6.50. Won't be back

Managed to book a table near window overlooking bay and watched boats with red sails , practicing for regatta, as sun set over a silver sea( well nearly it was pretty cloudy )

Recently stayed closed to the Bayview and dined twice . Our first meal was on a very busy Saturday evening and we had no complaints about food or service. I must say that the complete refurbishment of the bar area is very welcome and makes everywhere much brighter. Our second visit on a quieter mid week was not as smooth as the first. We ordered a bottle of wine and it was promptly served to our table without being opened or no offer of tasting. Hardly 4 star service. The main meal was supposed to contain a salad entry but this turned out to be 9 dry lettuce leaves. Again lacking 4 star status.

First visit to the 'new' Bayview for an evening meal in the Porthole Restaurant. The food & service was great.

This was a nice place for lunch. We got broth and prawn salad. Was really nice, and the staff were very helpful indeed. The wheaten bread was homemade, and very filling, which came with plenty of prawns (although a little more marie rose sauce be nice). But really good otherwise. Looking over the sea, and decent parking too! Takes bit of stress away! Will go back.

We stayed at the Bay View for three nights and ate in the Porthole restaurant on one night. This was by far the one with the most picturesque setting. To watch the sunset from the huge windows was stunning. The décor is quite eclectic, The dining area is both comfortable and relaxing. There wasn't a terrific choice for vegetarians, but what there was, was very nice.Prices comparable to other establishments.Would eat here again.

First visit to the newly refurbished Bayview Hotel/Restaurant, of which the Restaurant/Bar is now called "The Porthole"

Yesterday I had the BBQ spare ribs for lunch. They were delicious and an absolute 'meat fest' and came with fries and corn on the cob. I love pulled pork and these fitted the bill nicely.

Me and my mum came across the Porthole restaurant by chance. It looked to be a hive of activity and very popular. The restaurant was full so we had to sit in what was called the bar area but we were still able to get a great table with a beaut view and still felt part of the action. Good choice on the menu. We got the chilli penne pasta which was very very spicy hot but when we got into it, it was lovely. Very good quality chicken. The dish came with 'garlic bread' which was rock hard and had very little garlic flavour. Staff were nice and helpful. Great atmosphere. Mum didn't like the view of smokers at the front door. We will be back though!
