The reason why I am writing this review is because I noticed that the fish and chips failed to please a reviewer earlier this month, so I told other members of my group about this .They ordered the fish anyway and when asked said it was very good. I ordered the barbequed Korean chicken which was good. Service good friendly staff.

This is our second time staying at The Pointer. The rooms are nice/great for the price but the food and service in the pub are knock out. Emily served us for dinner and she made our experience brilliant, she was attentive, fun and couldn’t do enough to help make our dinner feel really personal. The quality of the meat that comes from their on site butcher is incredible and the decor in the pub is lovely. We had a slight mix up with our bill when we checked out but the team handled it really well. Thank you!

Disappointing slide. We visited the pointer in the past and generally had very good experience. Yesterday we visited the pointer for dinner and had to return two calamari starters for being over cooked, and one main course when the steak was not cooked as ordered. That said some members of our party had very good experience of their food. To their credit they replaced all the items we returned and never charged us for the items. I think the problems stemmed from new staff and being busy due to the amount of covers all being booked in a narrow window of time.

Set in the hart of Brill, The Pointer offers a wide range of quality wines that pair beautifully with the menu. Oliver the host greeted us at the bar and suggested a local gin, that we very much enjoyed with his recommendation of mediterranean tonic water. He led us through to our table in the dining room, lovley decor and cosy! Food is if a high standard and the on-site butcher provides amazing cuts of meat. We enjoyed the Haunch of Venison, the option of a Carafe made the wine very affordable. The staff were attentive but not pushy, they were busy but not stressed, nor were they running around, everything seemed well managed. The hotel room was fresh, clean and comfortable with a hearty breakfast being served in the pub the following morning. Caitlin, Mandy the managers were amazing. Bartender Ailisn and waiter Jacob were both fabulous. Definitely returning!

We live nearby to Brill, and friends booked the Pointer inviting us along Friday evening 22nd Sept, and the evening was really fun with very happy staff joining in with our hopefully polite silliness, really nice beers on offer, and a food menu that was pitched just right with starters, mains and puds for everyone, but done on 2/3 pages’ish. All the courses and menu selections were really good and enjoyed by everyone, including seasonal vegetables provided, no one felt rushed along, but we all loved the VIP experience, and everything was so very clean to sit and lean on, touch and walk across, a really good local again.

Visited the pub restaurant. Nice location. Generally attentive and friendly serving staff. Average food at best. Overpriced for what it is. Then desserts came which were an embarrassment. Not only was the service for this not as friendly (head chef?!). Worst desserts I've had. Terrible baked cheesecake: Overbaked, grainy, dry, no flavour. The sticky toffee pudding was a mess of what seemed like undercooked/raw batter. Expecting more from this place considering reviews. Confirms we'll be avoiding Oakman Inns group pubs as the food atandards seem to be getting lower in the establishments I've been too.

Having wanted to visit for a while, I was quite excited to head here for my birthday meal, one of our first evening mealsi out as a family with two toddlers. Unfortunately, we should have stuck with what we knew and gone to The Pheasant. Greeting was less than warm, don't have a kid's menu if you don't want small children in your restaurant. Food was dry, husband's 'crispy' (overcooked & dry) chili beef salad was hot it was inedible and my seared tuna was so overdone, it resembled tinned tuna, sent back and didn't receive much better with worse presentation, such a waste of fish. As an aside to all that, the baby changing is only in the ladies so if you're a single man with babies, or just want to share the load, good luck! Such a letdown for such an expensive meal in such a beautiful setting.

Waitress was fab (luckily a noticeable contrast to the woman who we saw on entrance who was most unwelcoming). Food was just a boring “ok”. Lamb dinner was nothing special. We were shocked that items you would expect to find in a roast were charged as extras I.e stuffing, cauliflower cheese, pigs in blankets as £5 per potion! £5 for three small pieces of stuffing! Children complained about the chicken goujons- which tasted like fish and batter had to be removed as overcooked and hard. Had high hopes for the venue but unfortunately will not be returning.

The location only loses a star because this is the second pub in Brill and as The Pheasant gets 5* in part because of its impressive location with views across the windmill including incredible sunsets it would be an injustice to give them equal billing

We have been regular visitors to the Pointer for a few years now. We meet friends for lunch, about one a month, and have always been very happy with the excellent food and service. Besides that it’s a very pleasant place. Something has gone badly wrong with the kitchen. The food was very poor. I had smoked haddock fish cakes, normally delicious, but today tasteless. I also had a half of Pointer XT bitter, which was off. Others had toast croutons which were almost inedible. All in all we were very disappointed and will vote with our feet, at least for the time being and go elsewhere.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

If you go to the Pointer make sure you ask the price of the specials. We had a meal and ordered plaice from the specials. We didn't ask the price because we expected an inexpensive fish like plaice to be reasonably priced... It wasn't. The Pointer has a policy of not telling you the prices of specials unless you ask. It turned out that our plaice cost £45.00, which was a lot more expensive than the other two main courses combined, which we discovered when we got the bill. And it's not necessarily the cost that's the issue here. If someone wishes to pay over the odds for an inexpensive fish, that's fine, but if there is a policy of not telling customers the price, and not pointing them in the direction of the specials board which showed prices, then that's poor. We were told that this was the policy when we queried it. By comparison, we recently had dinner in one of the best and most expensive seafood restaurants in Dartmouth, where even the monkfish and seabass, two more expensive fish, cost less than £40 per dish. After we received the bill we were told we could have looked at the specials board for prices, but we were not informed about the board until we got the bill. And we entered via a door where the specials board was not visible. It's the principle that is poor here, and the policy of not telling customers the prices for specials is strange. Our error was to assume that an inexpensive fish like plaice, being served in a village pub would cost anywhere near what you'd expect to pay for a lobster or turbot.

Okay 3 stars is kind of a relative score. I had expectations of the Pointer because it has (had) a great reputation. But we had a very run of the mill experience there. The place was chilly and the staff kept leaving the door open... Food was pretty standard, menu choice had nothing exciting to offer. Couldn't really fault it, but it wasn't anything special.

Nice little pub, nice friendly atmosphere and the food was pretty good. We both had the 12oz ribeye on the bone and they were excellent. The waitress was also very friendly. Revisited in early 2023 and the experience wasn't great, the food had gone down hill unfortunately. Doubt we'll visit again.

Sunday roast. Overcooked. Dry. Potatoes dry. Ordered rare fillet steak, came medium well. Sent it back. Peppercorn sauce, lumpy and strange. Friendly service and waitress tried to recover situation but ultimately only one of the three meals was decent. Second attempt at fillet much better. And swapped out the roast as well for OK dish. Unfortunately, first impressions count and we won't be back.
