Myself & 15 friends & family were welcomed and entertained for birthday celebrations held in the barn extension. Both the food, drink & especially the service were excellent with everyone thoroughly enjoying the occasion. It was a memorable event and thank you for making it so.

We booked The Plough based on recommendation for our last meal in the UK with our children before we move abroad. Whilst there are some positives on the whole it was very disappointing. We had booked a table, the staff were pleasant but service was very slow (we waited an hour after ordering for our main course and a further hour for dessert) with no apology or explanation. Also the manager Enes came to recheck our order after 45 minutes (suggesting that it had not been submitted or had been forgotten by the kitchen). A further 2 tables that ordered after us had their meals served before us. The mains when they came - the meat, potatoes and yorkshire puddings were lovely, however the veg was under cooked and under seasoned. We had to ask twice for sauce and wait 20mins for sauce and my husband found a hair in his apple sauce. The extra cauliflower cheese ordered (£7.95) was like soup - we politely sent this back and it was represented to us well after we had finished our main course by a flustered server who said 'I don't want to get involved'?! The desserts were poorly cooked and decidedly average - overpriced for what you got. The brownie was very dry, the crumble was basically apple sauce with broken up bits of shortbread on top of it and the sticky toffee pudding had a hair on it (we told the server who took it away and brought back exactly the same desert!). The manager did take the cauliflower cheese and the desserts off the bill after our daughter in law had a chat with them but they had still added 12.5% service charge. I feel this establishment is complacent due to their location and takes advantage of this rather ..........

I have read the reviews and not sure if I have been to the same place! We were unaware of the exact location so was surprised to have trouble finding somewhere to park, we arrived before our friends and shown to our table which was dirty, sticky and had food remains on it, after some fuss over getting cleaned we could take in our surroundings which were minimilist to the extreme, and could all do with a good clean. Food we felt was overpriced and though good quality was served warm at best, we were very disappointed, although an ideal place to muddy dogs and walkers as we were neither we did not fit in so will not be back.

Appalling experience. Had a table booked, was waiting to be seated when a group of 3 came up asking if there was any room for them to have food and were taken straight away to a table whilst we had to wait a further 15 minutes. Then we were taken to all I can describe is a cold shed at the back garden and given grotty paper menus, and the table was dirty. We then realised the offer that was on the website wasn’t on the menu and were just told “yeah, we don’t do that anymore” with no apology. Drinks took ages to come and in the meantime the table who didn’t even have a booking had drinks and food before we had even had our drinks. This resulted to us leaving with just paying for the drinks (we did get a slight discount which was appreciated) and ended up going to the Six Bells instead where we had an amazing meal, customer service was excellent and looked a lot nicer than the Plough Inn which quite frankly looks run down.

It seems to serve as a tourist trap for the unwary, a function it fulfils admirably, as no-one of right mind would trek all the way to Leith Hill for the food served here. My starter of gravadlax tasted of ‘fridge’ and not at all fresh. Local dentists must be rubbing their hands together in glee at the accompanying ‘bread’ as you could crack a jawbone on it. Mushroom tortellini consisted mostly of fried onion with a few pieces of (packet?) pasta and was oily and tasteless. Salmon en croute was burnt and dry. Thai curry managed to be both watery and salty - how the Hell did they manage that? We declined the offer of dessert as after two courses we’d suffered enough. Until the bill came… just short of £100 for two with a few drinks each. A cheeky 12.5% service charge added. Staff were nice, but clearly rushed off their feet. All in, woefully substandard food at exorbitant prices. Given the location, I guess they don’t need to try - and they haven’t.

I booked lunch here expecting the Christmas menu as advertised on their web site. We arrived, shown to a really small bar table and given lunch menus. I asked the staff about the christmas menu they advertised in their web site. He said he wasnt sure they were serving it today. He went away to ask. A very polite lady came back and said it was sunday menu today. I said we had booked for the Christmas menu as advertised. She said they were not serving it and was a mistake. My husband and I were very disapointed. We left! They staff were not rude. Just annoyed that they couldnt supply what they were advertising.

We were very impressed by our experience of dinner, bed and breakfast at the Plough. It is a characterful building in such beautiful countryside on Leith hill that it is hard to believe one is so near London. It is rural and peaceful. Our room was warm and comfortable, and there was a good choice on the menu for dinner. We both enjoyed our choices, and we considered the food to be well cooked and interesting, using good local ingredients. Breakfast offered an equally good range of choices on the menu, and was delicious, washed down with excellent coffee.

From the start it was obvious this is a well run establishment with engaged and engaging staff. A welcoming greeting when we arrived was followed by prompt but not over fussy service delivering menus and a great beer brewed on the premises (Leith Hill Brewery). This was Sunday lunch so I had the pork & ham terrine followed by a plentiful Sunday roast of beef and all the timings. In an age when most places seem to serve veg etc as an afterthought you could tell this was all super fresh and cooked to order. Simply one of the best Sunday roasts I have had in a pub or restaurant of any standard in a very long time.

It was a 'hit' with our group. The pub was warm and had a friendly atmosphere (including dogs). The Norfolk bronze turkey, goose fat roast potatoes with all the trimmings was excellent. Ditto the Quarter Pounder Beef Burger, Gruyere cheese, maple glazed bacon, tomatoes, pickles, burger sauce, chips. This pub is in such a beautiful location and is well presented. The roast dinners sounded and looked great. Sadly, the meat was terribly tough and potatoes were so hard (grey inside from being reheated I suggest) that the meal was actually inedible. Children's food was not at all what was ordered and when we sent it back it reappeared the same. Even when plates full of meat and potatoes were cleared, nobody bothered to ask why. Very disappointed.

Visited for lunch one busy Saturday. Initial impressions were spoiled a bit by the non-availability of cask ale (compressor failure), but it is clear that this place has been given a thorough going over and is now unrecognisable from the rather down at heels pub it used to be. Food was good but expensive (at or above London dining pub prices) and took too long to arrive. When it did hove into view it was excellent - and nearly worthy of its price point. Staff were friendly and helpful. There is a slight feeling that all has not yet bedded down properly, but all the omens suggest that, when they do, this will be an excellent pub. The location of course is first rate with fantastic walks and views on the doorstep.

We had booked for 3pm and we arrived at 3.05pm (due to the car park being full!) It then took a further half hour for us to get seated and be given a drink due to how busy it was.Menu looked really nice but at c.£18 for a main course (and the statement that they add a 12.5% "optional" gratuity) you are expecting something high quality. The croquette starters were delicious, as was the broth once it had been returned once for heating as it was only lukewarm. The Sunday lunches were really nice with a plentiful supply of meat and gorgeous roast potatoes. Charging £7.50 for a side order of cauliflower cheese you expect something pretty sensational - not a lukewarm bland cheese sauce! To their credit, they brought out a second one which was properly heated. We were going to have a dessert but having waited half an hour with no service we decided to pay the bill, where there was confusion as to their "2 courses for £23" offer - i.e. they didn't apply it to the bill.We politely declined to pay the 12.5% optional gratuity. The man behind the bar was incredibly apologetic about the uneven service today (although the waiter himself was lovely and doing his best in challenging circumstances). He also took £10 off the bill, so the end price with discount and no 12.5% enforced tip was basically what I felt it was all worth.Lovely location and nice food - some exceptional touches in the food - but the infrastructure needs a serious rethink and they need to invest in some dedicated waiting staff, rather than having bar staff ducking in and out of the bar.

Stumbled across this pub whilst in the Surrey Hills at Coldharbour. They accommodated all seven of us 4 x kids and our dog. Clean bright and friendly atmosphere with attentive staff that made everyone feel welcome. Ale brewed in the premises is first class as we settled down for a pub roast. Unfortunately the title pub roast certainly doesn’t do the food any justice. The whole family had a true culinary delight with tasty freshly prepared food on all three courses carefully presented which had flavours to match. Very reasonably priced and a treat for all the family cooked to order. Although busy which you would expect with a menu at this level, we wasn’t neglected and the staff ensured that we was well watered and happy. We shall be returning to relive the taste.

We stayed here for a week of our 2-week staycation in England exploring countryside with which we were unfamiliar and visiting glorious NT gardens and properties. We actually booked The Plough back in January 2021 mainly to give us something to anticipate after (hopefully) emerging from lockdown. The welcome we received and friendliness throughout was just what we were looking for. The room, although small was comfortable and the bathroom excellent. However, the food was way above what we would expect from a country inn. Even the basic fare at breakfast was subtly more tasty than your average 4* hotel. (Possibly due to experience in London rosette establishments)They do need to work on their housekeeping management (this is why they only received 4 stars). Finally a great venue to explore the Surrey hills, south London and even the south coast.

Six of us went to dinner last Saturday. Having cycled past it many times over the past 12 months I expected decent pub grub as it was always popular. It exceeded my expectations. The dinner options were varied and way beyond the usual pub food variety and quality. It was more like gastropub standard and the service levels were exceptionally high. The icing on the cake for me was the beer they brew on site. Very good and went well with my arancini followed by some amazing jack daniels ribs with broccoli. All the desserts are made by a local person and they are amazing. I don’t often have dessert but the six of us shared a large platter.

I thought this place was just a pit-stop for cyclists but it turns the sit-down food is pretty good too. It’s all home-made on the premises (no boil in the bag meals) as is some of the beer – there’s a small brewery out the back as well as a nice garden. We had the scotch egg to start which was absolutely delicious, especially the spicy tomato chutney it came with. Mains are your usual pub grub (burgers, pie, fish and chips etc) but really good quality, although perhaps they should put a curry on too. I had the Old Spot sausages and mash with very tasty bone marrow gravy. There’s some veggie options too which looked good but I didn’t try them. By this stage I was struggling to make room for pudding which was a shame as the desserts are knock-out. Staff were super-friendly and efficient. Apparently they do roast lunch on a Sunday which I’ll be back to try out!

The staff were friendly and helpful. Our booking was assessed by no fewer than two different people. We were led to the garden after asking to sit inside. We went back in. Then out. Then in. Finally, a great table in the bar but with a draught that not even the great local beer could cancel. We ordered. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. The food came after an hour and was delicious and hot. But seriously, one hour? Even on a bank holiday this was too much. So the mandatory 12.5% service charge felt too much as well. Particularly with their already high prices. Not sure we will go back..... But perhaps that's their custom? One-time visitors. They have the location, the demand. Why try harder? Worth thinking about. As I said the food was great. And the staff are friendly, but not very efficient.

Lovely location at the foot of Leith Hill. Large outdoor eating area. Waited at least 45 minutes - from when our order was taken - for fish & chips and a hamburger which should have been ready in 15 minutes. Excellent though when it finally arrived. One of our group who is Polish spoke afterwards to an off-duty waitress who also turned out to be Polish. She confessed that the kitchen was short-staffed.Clearly this is a result of Brexit. Good places like this will have to pay more to hire and retain overworked and currently underpaid staff.Would have been worth 4 stars but for the slow service.

We were booked for a Sunday lunch post dog walk for 3.30pm. The heavens opened during our walk delaying our ramble so we phoned ahead to say we would arrive at 4pm. Not a problem we were told. We arrived extremely wet and cold. There was quite a fuss moving chairs so we didnt sit on the velvet ones and then quite a fuss hanging coats and drying off. During this period it was not mentioned that the kitchen was closing so time was ticking on. We then ordered a drink. After the drinks arrived we asked if we could order our lunch. We were told by a junior member of staff that the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes so she would have to check. The manager then came over and said that unfortunately the kitchen we closed. He said he had a note firmly placed in the kitchen saying we would arrive at 345pm which was not true. Has the manager made it clear on our arrival that we were not able to order food after all or that we needed to press on and make our order we would have done so or left the pub. He allowed us to get changed, dry off and order our drinks before then declaring it was closed and the chef was going home. We felt this was really poor communication and it was noted by the other customers sat around us who agreed it was not good. We asked for our drinks to be refunded which he refused. We were then offered some left over pork for lunch which was declined. Shortly before finishing our drinks a junior member of staff was sent over and apologised that she had taken our message and indeed it had said 4pm arrival and that it was her fault and she was really sorry. The manager didn't come over with her and own the mistake with the young lady. On the whole I found the manager rude. we asked for a towel on arrival which was not possible either. Understandable on that front I guess. We noted on exit that the kitchen actually closes (advertised on website) at 530pm. WE felt that it should have been made clear when we arrived that lunch was finished and that when the manager had realised that they had made a mistake on the phone after all that he should have come over. in the end he did refund the drinks but never came over to see us again. I wouldn't return to this pub. I found the whole experience really odd. Lucy, West Susex

Came for lunch and it wasn't terrible, but I certainly wouldn't be rushing back or recommending it. The food was fine, but it was a limited menu (only one vegetarian option - a vegan burger that was clearly not homemade, served with a sad slice of tomato and lettuce in a bun) and very expensive - £19.41 for the burger and a ginger beer! The staff also seemed rather rushed off their feet although it wasn't busy, and although they weren't rude they weren't particularly welcoming. Several of the staff also weren't wearing their masks properly - covering only their mouths not their nose - and this didn't give me much confidence in their covid-protocol. If you're in the area or going for a walk it'll do, but I certainly wouldn't drive out there for it.

Ok, so it's a nice location & a nice venue. We were seated outside & our drinks order was taken fairly quickly. So far so good. We then waited & waited for someone to take our food order. Eventually we intercepted someone who said they would come back but didn't! Finally we caught someone else and our order was taken. By the time our food finally arrived we had been sitting there for about 80mins.. Now onto the meals. My daughter's burger was fine but the 2 haddock & chips meals were disappointing. Very small pieces of fish in a less than appetising yellow batter.. definitely not the chunky fish in crispy golden batter we were anticipating! They did knock off the built in 12.5% service charge when we came to pay, but all in all, not the best experience. Maybe it was an off day , who knows but we wouldn't hurry back.

Mr TSH and myself have not been here for a while since it's a bit off the beaten track - oh my what an omission.Delicious starter of potted shrimps, garlicky and juicy served on sourdough toast. Noms.Followed by a massive slab of roast beef, perfectly cooked veggies and herby roast potatoes. What's in the gravy? They could bottle that and sell as is.No room for pudding as we were absolutely stuffed, but those around us looked well made and nicely presented.OMG bring your appetite after a stiff walk. It will be needed. We will be back.

Popped in on a Leith Hill walk with my dogs. Made to feel very welcome and the dogs (water bowl was kindly provided)!! Had a coffee and a couple of starters. Delicious smoked trout salad with new potatoes and amazing pulled pork croquettes!!Will definitely be back for a meal. It is an an excellent stopping/re-charging point for walks, running and cycling in the surrounding area.

I’m usually a fan of this pub and the food is always delicious. The service today was disappointing. It would have been nice to have been greeted with a warm smile and be made to feel welcome. Nobody seemed to have any enthusiasm for what they were doing. Nobody was rude but we just felt like we were an inconvenience and they didn’t even seem overly busy. We asked for condiments and weren’t given enough for all of us so we politely requested more which didn’t come then asked again but by the time they came, we’d almost finished eating. One of our sides were left off of our 2 main adult dishes and we were initially only shown adult menus when we had children with us. After asking, the waitress said she’d see if there was a children’s menu which there was. As I said before, the food is great and we really enjoyed the meal. I usually visit in the evenings and meet friends for dinner and the service pre lockdown has been good. Hopefully my next visit will be better.

This perfectly fitted my requirements, a reasonably priced, cosy pub as a base for walking around the Surrey hills. Fantastic trails in the area, made all the better by returning to such a pub. Gluten free fish-n-chips is a rarity at the best of times; truly great GF fish-n-chips is even rarer, so we took the opportunity for one last time pre-lockdown 2.0 to get upto the Plough @Coldharbor and give theirs a go. Wow, just wow. Easily the very best GF FnC I’ve ever had and quite possibly the best FnC I’ve ever had in a restaurant. I’m going to ignore the mushy peas though but you can’t win ‘em all. And Winter is Coming - what a pint of beer that is! Come on lockdown - hurry up and get yourself done so we can get up there again. Great job Plough Inn people

This is a great location for starting and ending a walk in the Surrey Hills involving a climb up Leith Hill to admire the views. First warning is the car park is very small and fills up on a good walking weather day, it is then almost impossible to park elsewhere in this tiny hamlet. I had good memories of a Sunday lunch in this pub 20 years ago but sadly this did not live up to it. I thought a mid-week lunch that was not in half term week might not be too busy but with good walking weather it was rammed full. Our mistake was perhaps to book a late lunch at 1:30pm, because after we were shown to our table and served drinks, we were told the kitchen was too busy to take our food order and we would have to wait. We were given some bread and olives, and watched everyone around us eat for 45 minutes before they took our order. It was then nearly an hour before our food came, with very little service in between. By the time our mains courses arrived the rest of the restaurant had pretty much emptied out so busyness could not be an excuse for all of the main courses being seriously overcooked . I did enjoy a starter of venison pate with wild mushrooms and the unusually pale local ale was good. My quail main course was tasty but very dry from over-cooking and my wife sent back her fish and chips it was so over-cooked. We did not have time left to consider dessert, when we finally left the staff did acknowledge the poor service by taking off the fish and chips and discounting the bill 10%. Unfortunately it rather spoilt what could have been a lovely day out so I don't imagine we will be returning.

Had a lovely walk around Leith hill and ended up at the plough for lunch. We had pre booked but there had been a mix up with bookings and we had been rung in the morning and were told we may have to sit outside but in the end we were able to sit in the barn (plus we were able to sit an hour before our original time too which was great). Lovely and cosy with a fire too. The roast dinners were delicious and bountiful, great Yorkshire’s and loved that they came with cauliflower cheese too! We left feeling very satisfied and would definitely return if we were in the area. Service was prompt and the bill was very reasonable too.

Had the smoked haddock fritters as a starter which were delicious and my husband had the duck salad which he adored. Had the partridge as a main which I’ve never tried before and loved. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Staff weren’t overly attentive. Also had breakfast the following morning which was decent. 5 tables occupied and the one member of staff seemed like she couldn’t cope and service was slow

Good selection of local and commercial beers and a good house wine.Food was nice, my wife had a steak which she enjoyed. My fish and chip was ok - need more peas. Was a lovely visit on the few occasions we could get away as a couple

A super evening in this lovely old pub. I am giving it full marks as the welcome was so warm and the three young staff who looked after us deserve special mention. They could not have been nicer, making sure that everything was not only efficient but fun too. If I’m honest the food was not the best pub grub ever but it was fresh, well cooked and plenty for the three of us, despite having shared two starters and small portions of fish and chips we were unable to order a pudding; too full. Our third companion had a burger which was cooked to perfection and probably the best choice of the meal but sadly her appetite couldn’t do it justice. As it was a birthday celebration the lovely young staff brought out a slice of chocolate cake with a candle and sang to us which was completely unplanned and a most unexpected lovely touch. I have seen some less than glowing reports but our experience would definitely have us return to try some other options from the menu. The Covid situation seemed well catered for with clear designated areas for social distancing and plenty of hand sanitiser available upon entering the bar and in various other locations.

We've had dinner at Smith and Western twice in the last two weeks and, on both occasions, we had great meals with super service. The first time we were served by Philippa and the second time by Sam.
