I had pil pil prawns to start. They (5 small) horrible tasting small prawns were of such poor quality. And they cost an eye watering £11.50. The service was painfully slow. 2 servers for the whole restaurant. I then had the 10 oz steak which was average. The steak looked like it had been bought from Tesco for about £ 3.00. Very average. For 8 of us, with no dessert and 4 of the 8 not drinking alcohol the cost was nearly £ 500. For just a touch more on cost but many times better service, quality and ambience we could have gone to Smith’s or Alec’s. We will not be rushing back.

The service was bad, we didn’t get asked how our food was. The chips where cold, mac and cheese was hard and it was just pasta with no cheese sauce. worst mac and cheese I’ve ever tasted. Bad experience and the bill was over priced for horrible food!

The staff were so very nice. The Plough was spotlessly clean and we had a perfect table, right under the Air con which was very much needed on the Sunday we visited. There were eight adults and four children in our party. Apart from one adult we all opted for the roast dinner. One had chicken roast, the rest had the roast with all the meats. We ordered 3 extra portions of roast potatoes, which had 4 in each, I might add this worked out £1 per potato! The actual meal was such a small portion we were all flabbergasted and, more so hungry. The potatoes were hard in the middle and the meats was literally a mouthful of each. We did have alcohol including two bottle of red. The kids had a scoop of ice cream which was £6 a serving. Our bill came to £407..00 plus my husband left a £20 tip for the staff who served us because we could not fault them.It was a special occasion and we did celebrate but unfortunately left feeling hungry!

Visited last night with a special friend, had a sharing platter starter then both chose separate mains. My friend had the Risotto and I had the Fillet Steak, both meals were cooked and served to perfection and tasted really good, we both agreed that it was one of the best meals for a long time. The outside eating area is comfortable and warm with a properly built canopy and perfect to keep you dry if the rain sets in as it did last night. Well done to everyone who works here to make it such an enjoyable evening. Have already re-booked for six of us in a couple of weeks time.

This was my first visit to The Plough and I was impressed with the thought that had gone into making the experience Covid safe but also the very pleasant outside space. We had booked which I would recommend under current conditions since it was really busy. We had a table on a patio area which was sheltered on 3 sides by walls and had a retractable roof. We were lucky to have beautiful weather so the roof was open. There were plenty of outside heaters so I guess it would be pleasant on a cooler evening with the roof closed. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Drinks were delivered in good time. The menu had enough choice for most people to find something they would like. I opted for salmon and cod fishcakes which were delicious. I hope to visit again soon hopefully when the weather is as good as it was on this visit.

Went with a few friends on a Thursday evening. Was hesitant about going abs eating outside as it’s been so cold! I need it if worries! It was outside dinning but like being inside! It was very well set out with heaters and we say on a proper dinner table and chairs. It was all covid secure. The food was very fresh and tasty and our servers were wonderful In what was a full venue. The menu isn’t massive but a taste of every dish. I recommend the plough bacon burger and the caramel cheese cake. Was lovely! Throughly enjoyed it and we will definitely be back!

Hi Reviewers,Well where do I start, not going to beat around the bush, we have been in the catering sector for14 years so there is a degree ofexpertise there. We ordered our main after a short break from our starters, the staff we’re at best late teens early twenties, pleasant enough but having had staff in my, Restaurants, Bars, Cafes & Juice Bars you need an experienced team member to gel the operation and keep the service balanced. Now to the point, we ordered the Lamb roast lovely I thought, wellcouldn’t be further from the truth, the lamb was so tough & stringy I could not eat it if I had crocodiles teeth, so I called the young waiter/ waitresses over to take the dish away, my brother in law did at least take the plunge and have ago but he would have still been chewing it on the walk home.My brother in law just ask the lamb to be replaced with chicken so that he could at least eat something.I, though was complete put off and could not eat now so declined they replacement option. My husband and brother in law finished there dinners as quick as poss we then ask for the bill which I might add was rather Chad Valley wrote on 70s waiter pad, faulty towers style. My husband then on the way out as we waited outside calmly approached the manager who was hiding in the shadows for the duration of the meal.He expressed his disappointment, but did this professionally and without a scene. He told the manager he was in the Catering sector, he told him he made a grave error in not offering to redeem himself by inviting us back for another main FOC to appease the situation. To his amazement the manger proceeded to tell him he had done 80 covers with no complaints, my husband replied with actually 78 with no complaints nowHe then told him you was giving a fair chance to rectify the poor service which you have declined, Iwish you luck in the future with your customers who have yet to trial your fayre and walked away.Hopefully he will reflect on the error of his ways and future customers will not suffer the same fate.

Can't comment on the food as our family including my severely disabled dad were told to leave after an utterly pointless argument with the waiter. In all my time going to restaurants I've never come across a waiter so discourteous, dishonest and willing to argue with customers. I won't publicly name him here but he knows who he is. I'll call him "the waiter". I called in the morning to reserve a table outside for the afternoon for 6 people and dog. Hot summer's day, 32 degrees and sunny - just bear that in mind. The waiter informed me that they do not reserve outside tables, but that we could just turn up and take what's available. When we arrived there were 3 vacant tables, 2 in the shade, and one with disappearing shade that would have left half the table in the sun during the meal. Far from taking what's available, the waiter offered us the table with partial shade. I asked why we couldn't have one of the other tables, and he said these were already reserved. Pointing out this contradicted with what he told me over the phone, the waiter quickly moved the goalposts: apparently you can reserve outside tables, but we needed to have done this at some unspecified time in advance. I kept my counsel and politely asked if the table could at least be moved a little so that we'd spend less time in the sun. The waiter replied "no, the table can't be moved". Ok, it must be bolted down I thought. I then go back and consult the family and we agree seating arrangements. Me and the wife would take the sun. On arriving at the table, I could see it was an easily moveable lightweight object that required minimal effort to move. Not seeing how this could be a problem we moved it about a foot towards the shade. A foot. It was like I had disturbed a hornets nest. I was immediately confronted by the waiter who said if we wanted the table moved we should have asked staff to do it for us - an option he never gave of course. The waiter argued like his life depended on it, raising his voice to the visible embarassment of other diners. Instead of accepting his communication left a bit to be desired, he preferred to shift the blame on the customer and talk down to me like a naughty schoolboy and lecture me about how expensive the table was. I questioned why he was spending so much energy arguing with a customer when any reasonable waiter would have offered to move the table a few inches - especially on a sweltering hot day. No concession to decency or respect forthcoming, I asked for his name and said I'd be writing a negative review. I also asked for the manager who let me be clear did not exactly cover himself in glory either. I'm not sure what story the waiter told him but the manager was combative and not willing to concede the situation could have been handled differently. He simply repeated the mantra about how expensive the table was. When my wife then questioned why the waiter had been so argumentative the manager lost any facade of being helpful and said "you know what, I'm going to ask you to leave" and disappeared before I could take his name. Shocking. I do hope the owners take this review in the right spirit and not try and shift the blame on the customer. Your waiter needs a lot of training in customer relations, or he should seriously question whether this type of job is for him. Dishonesty, disrespectfulness and a bad temper have no place in the hospitality sector. As for the manager, he should learn to strip away his bias and actually listen to what his customers are telling him. We were really looking forward to our first meal out after Covid lockdown, and it turned into one of the worst restaurant experiences any of us can remember.

Food was OK - but not great - the man who served us didn't seem to care and was quite curt -we felt the platters for 2 were sparse and one chciken skewer for 2 people didn't hit the spot. They were too busy to make custard. We sent the desert back as it was dry but had no apology - it appeared the regulars were having special treatment we have been here several times before but on this occasion felt we have been let down.

Sunday Roast, the ploughs Sunday roast has always been amazing, even after lockdown they have managed to maintain brilliant service while taking precautions and also fabulous food. The staff were so efficient, energetic and friendly. We really felt welcomed. The garden had been made bigger with sun shades and the tables spread out more, but the atmosphere was still the same. I definitely recommend this restaurant for brilliant food and service. The chicken roast I would highly suggest as it is so succulent! And the lemon tart is a perfect light dessert after!

Great setting and atmosphere, however food very poor quality.Attended yesterday with a party of 14 people kids, OAP's and adults. The vegetable soup was extremely poor and did not resemble any kind of vegetable soup i have ever eaten in my 48 years of life and although i was very hungry was not consumed by me. The roast beef was that tough it could not be chewed or even cut with the blunt cutlery provided. I did try to make a very simple complaint about the beef (i let the soup issue slide) and was promptly told by the waiter "I asked you if everything was ok with the food and you said yes". I pointed out that all 5 people that have the beef did not eat it and the question of the food quality was asked immediately after the plates were put in front of us (so yes they looked good at that point.)Would not recommend.

Reading the reviews, I was so looking forward to this. BUT, my starter was simply amazing, (moules), so I was just drooling waiting for my Sunday roast .☹️ could not have been more disappointed , the parsnips were killed, roast potato was old and tasteless , I’m pretty sure the Yorkshire is bought in, and the drinks are so over priced it’s a joke. Sorry guys but for £166 you need to do a lot better.

As a family we have enjoyed several meals here although little variation to the menu. One bad experience at end June 2019 has put me off and it is unlikely that I will return. If they think £7.50 (challenged) for a simple white wine spritzer is reasonable then they would do well to benchmark since much more lavish local establishments charge far less for the same. .NAB

With over 170,000 readers a week and being in the top 2% in London on Tripadvisor I feel as though I recognise a good venue for lunch. And, in fairness, this is a good venue. Service great and food excellent. They let themselves down badly in only one aspect of the whole experience! That was that they advertise wine vintages incorrectly and as such overcharge for what they sell. I asked for confirmation that they had exactly what they advertised and was told that they did not but had something similar. I accepted that and told the waiter that I wanted what they had but it was NOT as expensive as the one advertised and offered them a slightly reduced price which was rejected, clearly

Service was prompt and professional and the food was nice (roast lamb, roast pork and roast beef, plus a burger). Our visitors really enjoyed the main course, and we followed it up with sticky toffee pudding and apple and peach crumble. The afternoon was topped off with a look at Mountnessing windmill and a stroll along some local footpaths in the sunshine. A perfect Sunday afternoon.

We travelled north of the river to attend an event at the Brentwood Centre and found this restaurant on Trip Advisor. It was ranked around 9th in the area, but it’s proximity to our ultimate destination was a plus. We were the first customers of the evening, so it was empty when we arrived. This made us a little apprehensive, but we need not have been concerned. We were made to feel very welcome, drinks were served promptly and our food order taken. The menu was varied, there was the option of a couple of daily specials and the waiter was knowledgeable about the menu. Prosecco was sold by the glass (it was very good, so I had two). I started with mussels and my partner opted for the stuffed portobello mushrooms. Both were superb. For main I had calves liver and bacon, my only criticism is that the liver was not as tender as calves liver usually is, but it is a very small criticism as it was still well cooked and tasted delicious. My partner chose the lamb shank that fell from the bone and was as tender as expected. For finale I had the pear cheesecake and my partner the crumble. All the food was served hot, there was a decent gap between courses without waiting to long and the staff were attentive without being obsequious. By the time we left, the restaurant was filling up. If this is the 9th best restaurant in Brentwood, I need to visit the other 8. At under £100 for 3 courses with drinks and coffee for 2, we will definitely be back

Was there on a Friday on a lunch date. The menu was on a piece of paper and asked the waiter what was the special (twice) he said it's all on the list. I asked for a steak, sorry no steaks. Considering this is lunchtime and steak is probably the easiest of foods to prepare and cook; I was disappointed. We settled for Tenpura Prawns followed by Crab Cakes and chips, simple enough. The so called Tenpura Prawns were in fact, NOT Tenpura, having lived in Japan for many years I do know the difference. Tenpura flour was NOT used as the batter was lumpy; however the prwans were large and good. Served with chilli sauce instead of Tentsuyu sauce if it was genuine Tenpura. The so called main course of Crab Cakes; they lacked crab and lacked any seasoning and was served with a lot of greenery instead of probably a little dressed salad which would have made a difference.. I asked why the chips were not fried a second time, result, a blank look. They were flowery on the inside and soft on the outside. The one item I did enjoy was the coffee, well, you couldn't really mess that up could you. In the kitchen I would say it was a cook as opposed to a chef. A PLACE THAT CALLS ITSELF A RESTAURANT AND IS UNABLE TO SERVE A STEAK IS SIMPLY A CAFE and an establishment like this; is a cafe.

The menu contains very basic food that even the most fussy eater would be happy with, including fish and chips and burger and chips. I had not seen scampi on a menu for some time and gave me memories of the 1970s.. The waitress was friendly and welcoming and the decoration is inviting. Although the food was nothing special l enjoyed my visit and be happy to recommend the Plough.

We went here after having a bad experience months ago thinking we would give it another go but we're extremely disappointed. Staff very friendly but not sure what is up with the food. It was like being in a cheap cafe down in southend. Nothing home cooked and everything fried from frozen. Bill came to almost £200 for 7 of us - shocked.

Food choice and quality was excellent. Good size portions. Interesting draft beers on offer. Service was friendly, quick and very good. decor could be improved on as some areas in the restaurant were boring and a little sad.

Upon arrival the staff were fully attentive to al needs and catered perfectly to me and all of my friends. The wait for our food was short meaning no waiting around which suited us perfectly. When the food came it was excellent even when one of my friends had to request a special gluten free dish. Overall the experience was perfect and would recommend to anyone. Whilst we were there they were couples and larger parties so it seems to be suited to all events.

Sunday lunch, mid August. We met up with our friends inside the restaurant and I had a good read of the menu displayed by the front door on my way in so I already knew what I was going to order, As we hadn't seen them for over 12 months we immediately launched into a good old catch up and were still chatting when our waiter arrived to take our order. It was then I noticed that my choice wasn't on the menu I was holding. When I mentioned it the waiter explained the display menu wasn't for our lunch sitting- weird!

A late invite that ended up as a great evening out. We visit here as often as possible and Idris and his team have never let us down. However, tonight was exceptional. The company for dinner always helps, but the food was outstanding. Despite us all being regular visitors we all agreed that this was the best ever. If you are visiting Brentwood, don't waste your time on the High Street. Grab a cab and head here for a quality evening out. Looking forward to our next visit as always.

We visited as a big group on a Sunday, booked in advance. Waited a very long time for the food and one of us got our starters 20 minutes before a single other person at the table. They also don't offer anything like soya milk or dairy alternatives for your tea/ coffee which I thought was a bit odd. The waitress looked at us like we were crazy. Standard pub grub really in my opinion.

Found that the portions were on the small side - especially the steaks, but perhaps we should have asked the steak sizes before we ordered! They were served with tinned mushrooms (!) and oven chips (again a small portion). As this meal was £21 plus, we did not feel it represented value for money. The service was not particularly good, i.e. A bit slow, although the staff were pleasant. The air conditioning was a bit fierce and unpleasant at times (too cold if you were seated underneath it)The restaurant was full and therefore, for some reason, incredibly noisy - it was difficult for us to hear each other across the table - felt like we were having to shout at times. The decor was good and the seats comfortable.I would not go back to this restaurant again

Expected to be able to have a nice family Sunday lunch and catch up, instead the noise from a group of people at one of the other tables was indescribable! The group even spoilt someone else's birthday cake surprise! Now we wouldn't have thought anything of it and put it down to one rowdy rude group of people...except the waiter smiled and said it's like this every Sunday! Shame, the food was nice it's just the ringing in my ears (I kid you not) that I can do without.

Visited The Plough for a late afternoon meal. Had heard some good things about it, so was looking forward to it. Had the beer battered fish and chips and to be honest I've had much better. Fish was ok, but chips were pretty tasteless and slightly under cooked. Tartar sauce was also not particularly nice and tasted like it was out of a jar, when most decent places appear to make their own these days. All in all not great and pretty pricey compared to other local pubs serving similar food. Drinks also expensive.

You can not turn back the clock, we used to go to this pub 45 years ago, all has now changed, it is now a smart restaurant. We were visiting family who still live in the area and they had booked a table for Sunday lunch ( 8 of us) and had a very agreeable meal. They were very busy but the staff were polite and attentive, the food was delivered quickly and everyone was pleased with their meal.Sticky toffee pudding was Amazing!!!!!!

My very fussy (22 weeks pregnant!) wife & I had a lovely meal there on the spur of the moment and were very impressed. The choice of dishes wasn't overpowering or overpriced and the service was very good. For a gastro Essex experience it was very reasonably priced in a lovely contemporary setting & great ambience.Orphee & Russ

Booked a table last minute on a Sunday for some late lunch/early dinner. No problem getting a table for 4. Service was lovely and made sure we had a comfortable table due to me being pregnant - really nice touch. Really reasonable prices I'd say for a nice pub. £13-£15 for a Sunday roast, and it was lovely. Huge Yorkshire pudding and little jugs of gravy. We all managed to fit in dessert - can highly recommend the Apple Crumble with Crème Anglais - absolutely delicious! All in all, a lovely meal and worth a visit. Would definitely return!

We recently went here for Sunday lunch to celebrate a birthday. We were welcomed by a member of staff and from then on it was a great experience. The food was excellent and the service matched it. Four of our party had a roast and said it was lovely - me I tried a fish dish which was great. The service was first class and the puddings just the same. Thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

We visited with 10 friends to celebrate my wife's birthday. Early January is an odd time to eat out, so we had no trouble booking for 10, and the restaurant wasn't full. The service was pleasant and efficient. Foodwise, as well as the usual roast offering, the restaurant also offers a fairly healthy list of alternative main course dishes. Starters and desserts are pretty much mainstream. The chaps all had the same thing - the Big Meal - consisting of a bit of each roast. In our case it was pork beef and lamb. It was indeed quite large and I failed to manage a dessert afterwards. But he bottom line is that we had a great time, enjoyed everything and there was nothing to detract from our enjoyment of the day. Recommended. Will return.

Had a Sunday roast at this venue, all fresh vegetables, home made Yorkshire pudding I found that the vegetables wasn't seasoned, personally I don't like to add salt to my dinner but today I had to to add salt to give it taste, even the roast potatoes were bland, probably maris pipers which are not the best for roast potatoes, good size dinner

Visited for the first time on a very busy Saturday evening this interesting restaurant in a very attractive small town just of the high street. Its a modern bar/restaurant with an area outside for eating too with free parking. The staff are very friendly and the service was attentive the whole evening. The Asian menu offers main meals or tapas with the best of ingredients used.

What a great venue, we were here for a birthday celebration and the place was perfect; it was a buffet style celebration with a proper party atmosphere, the food was delicious, the staff were friendly, engaging and welcoming and the night (7pm til midnight) went really smoothly with no-one waiting too long to be served. To top it off a silver charm, with huge sentimental value, was lost during the evening, 'The Kitchen' was contacted the next morning, they had found it and held on to it - so a massive thank you for that. Highly recommend the Brentwood Kitchen if you have special event to celebrate.
