Outstanding real ale pub - award winning. Fantastic choice of quality beers. Service is great and staff knowledgeable. Plenty of seats in a quirky arrangement. Music on certain nights. Really special pub - worth a visit.

Loverly little pub with a good choice of drinks.

Excellent beers, all very friendly despite being invaded by a host of liberal democrats. Still doing Yorkshire Tapas of pork pies and pickled eggs.

A great pub with a number of different rooms, when I bushed a roaring fire warned up the front bar. Great range of cask ale and a busy, friendly atmosphere. I'll definitely visit again next time I'm in York.

Cannot find fault with York CAMRA pub of the year 2023. A lovely pub in one of the quieter City areas within the walls. Love the layout and decor. A front bar room with a real fire and a much larger rear area with a good rear beer courtyard to boot.I know I have been before with Jorvic, not sure about Paulicarus. Five real ales. A new brewery for me, Yorkshire Dales. Had an excellent pint of Drover's Arms dark mild 3.9%. Also in CAMRA 2024 Good Beer Guide.

Always a different and interesting selection of beers, good whiskeys, and warm atmosphere.

Becoming a regular. Son loves it here. Atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Beer is good with choices. Prices are fair. They have entertainment occasionally. The fire is a winner. Staff are friendly and happy to make the night.

Popped in for a pint before we went for a Chinese across the road. I have lived in York for 34 years and never been in here. What a great place, nice and welcoming and a great pint, I shall definitely be returning. My new favourite pub in York.

Fantastic pub with a very warm and friendly atmosphere. Great location and the pub itself has a choice of various seating areas which make for a very pleasant experience. The staff are friendly and helpful. Can't wait to return soon.

Stopped in for a pint a few weeks back after walking the wall around the city, and we were delightfully surprised at the simple charm of this place. Unassuming, no pretence, no music or tv, just a charming, beautifully preserved Victorian-era (I think) pub, where strangers could say hello. Oh, and some fantastic real ale, too. I visited 13 different pubs on this most recent trip to England, and this one was my favourite.

A lovely little pup serving a cracking range of beers. We met some friendly locals, which the layout of the bar really lends itself to. Staff are tip-top too

Visited on a busy Friday after work for drinks, pretty full so we stood on the pavement. Lovely vibe and beer was hand pulled and great!!

Nice little pub! I would just personally prefer a better choice of lager, however the staff are lovely and they had a pianist on the night we were there. We were pleasantly surprised how much we enjoyed it.

Visited on a Friday night, with my son and a couple of his friends from Uni. We all had a great time. Excellent beers, great pianist and a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. My Uber driver, on the way back to my hotel, said it was probably one of the best pubs in York. I think he was spot on.

Welcoming pub, with good selection of real ales. Landlord friendly, and accomodating. Beer garden and real fire. A hidden gem.. Dog friendly too.

My favourite beer garden in York, such a quaint and relaxing little court yard. Beer selection a touch limited but still of a much higher caliber then your average pub. Regular love musicians, pianists, had bands etc.

We popped into The Phoenix Inn before going to a concert at the Barbican York. This is a landmark pub for those who know York. As usual the pub was busy but we managed to get a seat. There was a varied selection of ales which were was first class my wife had a sauviuon blanc which was nice. Prices were reasonable. The pub is 'traditional' it needs a bit of a freshening up and the toilets while clean need updating. You will get a nice welcome here and reasonable priced drinks.

Did a quick online search during my stay in York. Camra pub of the year, 2023 - Phoenix. So we went. Exactly as advertised - freehouse, wide range of beer, good company, no juke box or slot machine, people *actually talking to each other*. Spent a lovely evening. Recommended.

A very traditional "local" near the medieval wall to the south of the ancient and amazing city of York. Check for live music nights and enjoy the selection of beers, wine and spirits in quaint as surroundings.

Nice pint of Saltaire and a bar billiards table tucked around the back. We will be back

I'm in this pub way too often but its hard to stay away! The live music is wonderful and the selection of drinks unrivalled. The different cask rotations keep it interesting and each and every member of staff are attentive and great to be around. I would recommend this pub to anyone.

Great traditional pub, always a good welcome and great beer. Love the beer garden in the summer, overlooking the city walls, and snug rooms for the winter. Seems to have a good music scene though we always go early so can’t comment on that.

Very nice pub a little way out from the center of town. Good beers. Usually has a gluten free on ale on tap. Great for one of my coeliac friends. Staff all seem nice.

Lovely pub with a courtyard at the back of the pub with a view of the wall that runs through the whole of York. When we were there there was live music and nice weather so we were able to enjoy the concert in the courtyard

The Phoenix is a brilliant place to drink and socialise. It is a drinking pub - in a good old fashioned way - cool, great beers, beautifully maintained interior. Been going in since I was 18 and 40 years later its still the business. More spacious and less crowded than the Bluebell in Fossgate with easier access.
