The Peasant in Islington

We got married here 5 years ago, and friends often and randomly mention how much fun they had. I hope it opens again soon. The food was great, the service was great. Our wedding anniversary won't be the same without a trip up the northern line to visit.

Excellent when open to the public. Suffers from a conveyor belt of weddings at weekends, in which case head south to The Sekforde or Slaughtered Lamb. Mid week head north to the Dame Alice Owen.

Sunday lunch was good food with a couple of drinks each for 4 people with the £20 service charge sat in the bar area came to £45 per head for a main course and 3 drinks each . It’s Enough but good food

Been a damn good local for as long as I have lived in Clerkenwell - 22 years. Very sad to learn it has closed.

Excellent Sunday lunch. Huge portions at very reasonable prices. Not a venue, however, for a quiet meal à deux. It is very noisy with lots of big groups and children running around.

Relaxed atmosphere with friends and family to celebrate my birthday. Food was outstanding

The reviews don’t lie, great Sunday roasts! Child friendly, dog friendly and attentive staff. I’d definitely go back. Forgot to take a photo of the meal but this was the Sunday menu in January.

I have had a few Christmas dinners at this pub. Always great service with friendly and helpful staff. It is a great place, give it a visit.

Booked two weeks in advance arrived 18:30 on a Sunday to be told 5 of the main menu items were 'gone'. The chap serving after was good, the lady who delivered the 'there is no food left' why? 'because it was popular at lunch time could not have been less interested. There was no atmosphere and we were the last people there after an hour. If they are only open for late lunch not dinner they should say so. Disappointing.

This is a hidden gem and has great food and drinks. The service was fabulous.

The Sunday roast is incredible! Highly recommend it! The staff were friendly and accommodating when we turned up earlier to our booking. Lovely pub overall, nicely decorated.

Fantastic food, really friendly and accommodating staff.

We went to the Peasant for a Sunday roast supper. Main course was ok but not hot; potatoes were tough. My pudding - creme brulee - was curdled and I didn't eat it. Staff rather inattentive - and it wasn't particularly busy. It's a shame - this used to be a very good pub and eatery and the building is splendid.

Fantastic local pub with great Sunday roast. The Monday-Sunday menu is also excellent or just pop for a pint or two in a proper neighbourhood pub. The food, beer, service and space are all quality and no pretence.

Revisited our old favourite gastropub after 20 years and were happy to find it as good as ever.

Order the beef burger! If you like a really tasty, juicy dirty burger, then this is the by far the best one in the area.

After months of searching for the perfect wedding venue, we came across The Peasant, and we instantly new we'd found somewhere with all the attributes we were looking for in a venue. But what made the difference was the professionalism of Nick the manager, who guided us through the process of organising our big day, every step of the way. We felt so reassured going into our wedding, that it helped us relax and enjoy every minute of our day. They dressed the room way beyond our expectations, it looked absolutely stunning. The food and service were amazing. All our guests were telling us for weeks after, how delicious the meal was. We wouldn't change a thing, it was the perfect venue, which made for the perfect day. A big thank you to Nick and all the staff at The Peasant.

I got married at the Peasant and will definitely do so again if/when this marriage fails. The food was incredible, the pub is well set up for weddings with a light upstairs for food and a great downstairs for drinks and dancing. Nick is great at organising weddings at the Peasant so you effectively get a wedding planner thrown in. Great beers on offer too. Would definitely recommend getting hitched here!

whenever I visit London I come here. great music. nice interior (so much space, very light and open). the food is just amazing - can defo recommend the fish&chips - and the personnel is very friendly.

There was so much confusion as to how long we had the table for, the booking and 2 waitresses said different times, we had ordered deserts and a bottle of wine when we were told we had to leave, luckily they had a no show but they acted as if this was our fault.

Really nice place. Enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch. Large Yorkshire's and awesome gravy! Meat portions on the small side but delicious all the same. Ham hock terrine for starters with piccalilli (which normally I don't particularly like but this had a wicked sweetness which was bloody lovely). Overall a great meal and the staff were really nice too.

This is a pub that we used to frequent for Sunday Roast in our neighborhood. We have since left London and recently came back to have their Sunday Roast. The food has gotten even better through the years, my husband had tears in his eyes while eating it because the food is amazing as always and the ambiance is just perfect. Any items on the Sunday Roast menu is good, whatever meat you get (i.e. pork belly, chicken, and beef) would go really with their potatos, carrots, cauliflower, red cabbage, and Yorkshire pudding. Do yourself a favor, put a bit of everything on your fork/spoon with the sauce and eat it all in one bite, everything taste wonderful together. Eating at the Peasant every Sunday is like having American Thanksgiving over and over again. Don't forget to get their Sticky Toffee Pudding at the end, it's super nice.

A good Sunday roast and friendly staff. The portions were large! High quality meat and sides. There are vegetarian and vegan options and staff were great about allergies and preferences. Recommend it if you're in the area.

Our server from Ireland was extraordinary. He was super kind and attentive. The roast itself was subpar at best. It was quite dry and there wasn’t much of it if you ordered the lamb or beef. The lamb and beef were both too tough. They were also very dry and overall not worth eating. The pork was fine. The side dishes were exceptional though. The Yorkshire pudding was super crispy and fluffy and sopped up the sauce very well. The cauliflower and cheese was an interesting combo that worked very well. As a person who doesn’t like cauliflower that was delicious. The pickled cabbage on the side added a nice sourness that contrasted very well with the salty sauce. The best thing we had by far was the sticky toffee pudding. The thicker sauce mixed with the ice cream was amazing. We ordered an extra scoop of ice cream. The sweetness of the pudding mixed with the hot sauce and the contrast of the cold ice cream. It was an amazing blend. They did a great job with the sticky toffee pudding.

Great food and services (as always) so it never disappoints when we dine there. We look forward to returning.

Great local pub with very tasty food and menu. Much better than you would expect in a pub. Everything on offer from trad fish and chips, beef Wellington, burgers, pasta etc. Will definitely come back. Also has an original mural on the wall going back way in its time I reckon. Popular with office workers and locals.

I booked a table for myself, my parents and my sister during our trip in London (we are French) and it was a delight !!! The food was excellent (refined and tasty), as was the service !

Couldn’t have felt more like we were in the way. There was almost nobody else there, which was understandable given how early the staff started putting the chairs on the tables and spraying cleaning material around - almost a full hour before closing time. We were harried to order and eat before 8:30 because the kitchen was closing early - not surprising given the lack of people, but there was a strong sense of chicken and egg about that! I hope they turn this around, the food is good and the building is very pleasant.

I have dined at the peasant many times and on the last two occasions the food has not been up to expectations. Not only has the food been warm instead of hot but the portions are considerably smaller(two roast potatoes). My chicken was dry and my friends beef was extremely tough. I will been looking elsewhere for my Sunday roast. The staff as usual were pleasant and accommodating.

Disappointing. The food on the menu offered awas not the same as that shown on the website and an identical dish was £2.50 more than on the website. The pub lacked any atmosphere and although the food was ok - it was just "ok". 2 vegetarian options were both focused on butternut squash - tough if you don't like that particular ingredient.

A great British pub for a meal!

Vegetarian and vegan options, roast dinner portions are huge and delicious!

Disappointingly the food was very average. 2 of our party had sausage and mash with an onion”jus” which was actually a dark thick gravy. Both vegetarian options had butternut squash as the main ingredient which wasn’t helpful if you don’t like it. Would not return.

Had a wonderful Fathers day lunch, and although the Peasant was really busy, we didn't feel at all rushed. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was excellent, especially the bar staff.

Best not to eat there during the week. All the reviews say that they do a great Sunday lunch so I should probably not have chanced it on a week day. The food was beyond awful. A jerk chicken burger for £15.50 was a pan fried chicken breast in a bun. It was an insult to call it jerk chicken. Some of the items listed on the menu were not in the burger. The chips it came with were fine but there were only 3 small onion rings. Probably the most expensive burger I’ve had in a long time given the quality. Also for a pub in Islington I can’t believe that they only have 2 types of tonic: ordinary tonic or slimline. Won’t be going back in a hurry.

We had a good time and a lovely meal. The staff were really nice and helpful.

The Peasant is a lovely old pub with a fabulous history. The food is delicious and well cooked but way too big on the portion front to the extent it's quite off putting. The pork belly slice was the perfect amount but the Yorkshire pudding almost took over the plate and had to sit on top of the meal as the 3 huge roast potatoes filled the other half. The cheese board was enough for 4 people. All the staff are wonderful and love the glass jars of wild flowers on the table.

Service was top notch as always but the food could have been hotter, that’s really my only grumble, we had a super lunch.

A lovely traditional corner pub in Clerkenwell with windows all around the venue offering lots of daylight and panoramic views. I loved the picture framed walls and glass panelling on the internal doors. We had a pleasant experience, the service was attentive, fast and friendly, the venue had plenty of space and not crowded. We were recommended by a friend and have seen great Instagram images. The menu looked great on paper which made us book, we asked for a Children’s menu and they didn’t have one on paper but offered smaller portions of fish and chips or roast beef, they weren’t flexible on children’s roast chicken which meant we had to pay more and which meant there was wastage of food hence the low score on value. The portions were generous and the plate looked great! The Yorkshire pudding was large as our heads, which the children loved.

A great pub for Sunday lunch - laid back, friendly and easy on the wallet. The food was comforting and well put together. Staff were lovely.

Shane and I were looking for lunch, and the menu outside suggested a good array of classy dishes no dearer than some other nearby pubs. Light streamed through the big windows creating a welcoming ambiance, and we got menus from the friendly waitress as soon as we sat down. She scored extra points from me by turning down the loud nondescript music without hesitation when asked. I chose pork belly with mash and greens from the main courses, and Shane went for the bangers and mash. We weren't in a heavy drinking mood so I can't comment on their range of beers and wines. All the dishes were expertly cooked and presented, and my dish only £15, including veg. The desserts looked great, but we were were too full, so I had just an excellent double espresso. I must come back often( although I didn't ask if the evening menu is more pricey)

Brilliant Sunday roast! We had the pork, the beef and the lamb and everything was excellent. Enormous Yorkshire puddings were our special highlight. Service was very attentive and drinks were good too. Fully recommend

This place came recommended to me for a great Sunday roast so maybe my expectations were a bit high. The potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, gravy and red cabbage were good, the other vegetables unfortunately undercooked and we tried the beef and the pork roasts: the beef was average (I didn't want to finish it) and the pork so extremely fatty I couldn't eat it - but my partner ate whatever meat could be found among the fat and said it was alright. The fish and chips on the next table looked incredible though, so maybe we were a bit unlucky.

Thanks for a great time, Food Excellent staff fabulous. My only problem was we were sat by an emergency exit, which someone used several times. It was freezing, please stop staff or customers using it .

The best roast in London, such a lovely pub... we love it

A very nice cosy little pub. Well known for it's Sunday roast (which is most excellent). Good selection of beers and ales on tap, friendly staff that are very welcoming which overall creates a lovely atmosphere. Overall a great place to visit for either a pint after work, dinner or a Sunday roast dinner.

The place seems like, there were no Ales from cask and the food was good, but not exceptional as we were expecting from the other reviews
