I had been looking forward to this for the last five months and been wanting to travel on the Orient Express for many years - it was well worth the wait! My husband and I enjoyed the 5 hour journey around the Kent countryside, 5 course meal, wine and champagne. The train is simply stunning and the service was incredible. We felt as if we had stepped back in time into the 1920’s - and that’s not all - there was a murder, on the Orient Express!!! Actors came through our carriage one at a time to tell their story and we had to play detectives to try and work out “who dunnit” - brilliant fun, actors very engaging and at the end of the trip when my six year old daughter met us on the platform the actors even took her into the group for a photo. I’m booking to go on the Orient Express again - she’s become a best friend of mine!

An out of this world experience with luxury comfort in 1920's style. Food is superb and endless, staff attentive and cabins very comfortable with a personal attendant to see to your every need. This is a "once a lifetime" experience - quite literally - not being negative but I would not take this trip a second time. Main issues were the check-in (really poor first impression standing outside McDonalds and Starbucks for 45 minutes in a queue) and the tunnel transfer that others have referenced. Cabins were pretty much as expected - we knew they are small - and food was absolutely outstanding as was the service. If you want a pre-dinner drink (which most do) get to the bar early - it gets very busy with standing room only after 8pm. Only other small point - views on Day 1 pretty disappointing - in fact dinner was served whilst we stood for an hour or two in a deserted Paris Est station. Views on Day Two much better as you go through Switzerland.

We booked the Venice Grand Suite on the Orient express, which was an incredible experience in itself and, although a lot more expensive than the standard compartments, gives a huge improvement in respect of facilities and convenience. No standing in the corridor late at night queing for the loo! We had our own bathroom with full size shower, washbasin (made from Murano glass!), toilet and bidet, rather tan having to make do with a only a washbasin the the standard compartments. We had a double bed in a separate bedroom rather than the bunk beds converted from the seating used during the day. Our steward, shared between the three grand suites was on call throughout the trip and brought us complimentary Taittinger champagne whenever asked. On boarding in Calais, we enjoyed chilled champagne and the 50g tin of Petrossian Tsar Imperial caviar with a selection of breads. We chose to have dinner in the restaurant car of our choice rather than have it served in our suite which was an option. The food was fabulous, fine dining at its best and the service was impeccable. The bar car, "Car 3674") served cocktails whilst we listened to the pianist playing the grand piano until the early hours of the morning. Eating breakfast, again washed down with champagne, whilst travelling through the Swiss Alps the following morning was a magical experience. For 24 hours, we were the two most privileged and cosseted rail travellers on the planet. The whole experience will stay with us for the rest of our lives. Whilst costing significantly more than the standard compartments, the decision to book a Grand Suite and removing the issues associated with the standard compartments turned a trip that would have been amazing in itself into one which was absolutely unsurpassable. Highly recommended for your bucket list!

My husband and I have just returned from Venice on The Orient Express from Venice to London to celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary. The trip was indeed magical as expected. The three dining rooms and the bar are absolutely impeccable, the food is delicious and the chef is very accommodating to different requests. The cabins are really quite small and compact so it is important to only have hand luggage as there is not enough room space for large cases. Everything is neat and tidy and your own personal steward makes up your bunk beds for the evening whilst you have your meal. The staff are very helpful and willing to be of service at all times. It is worth going on the train just to see the fabulous woodwork, the etchings, marquetry, the quality of the craftsmanship, the furniture, the styling from the past, the gorgeous Lalique work on display. Loved it, expensive, but what an experience!

It wasn't a special anniversary, it wasn't a present - we just decided this would be something special in itself, something we should do before we were too old to enjoy it. And from the moment we boarded the British Pullman in Victoria station we were definitely having fun. Something, perhaps, to do with the superlative quality of the food? Or the lavish chairs we sat in to eat as we passed through the English countryside to Folkestone? And then, the Channel Tunnel safely and intriguingly traversed, the perfection of the Orient Express itself?

I was part of a corporate group whom brought us on board the Orient Express for lunch and day trip on the Belmond British Pullman's orient Express train. The trip came with a murder case for passengers to solve. There were about 8 (or so, pardon me I don't remember exactly) actors/actresses on board to give us clues and tell stories on their part, they took turn to each carriage so everyone got all the same information. I thought it was quite gimmicky at first but somehow I did enjoy it towards the end, at least their costumes were nice. The food was surprisingly delicious for train food. I had fish for entree and lamb for main, they were so well prepared. The service was so fine. The cabin I was on was called Vera, I had no idea it was the one once Nelson Mandela took, he was on seat no.20 which was a few seats away from mine! Inside all the cabin was just simply beautiful, it was so luxurious and elegant. The train made one circle towards the south of London, it took about 3 hours in total for the entire trip from Victoria Station. I found out about the price from their website (it was 374 plus GBP per pax), and let's be honest, I must admit that I wouldn't actively put this in my personal itinerary.

For a special occasion we booked the British Pullman from London Victoria boarding The Orient Express at Calais heading to Verona. The train is amazing. Spotless and just how it should have been in its day. The service and food are both excellent. The cabin is comfortable during the day but at night when converted to our bunk beds it is very small and probably not the most comfortable but still a great experience. The restaurant cars, three in total, are all different and we did sit in two of them. One for dinner and one for lunch the following day. You need to look at these to appreciate them. The whole trip was an experience and the only negatives were the bar - this was too small for the number of passengers and if you had to pass through the bar to get to the restaurant then this was difficult. As we expected drinks were very expensive and don't even think about a cooked breakfast at €130 per person. An average bottle of wine will cost you €80, cocktails around €22. You can't let the prices spoil your experience but I do feel that the prices are a bit too excessive. Even a fridge magnet will set you back €20, it is very nice and good quality but still a fridge magnet. I am glad we had this experience but not sure if I would pay to do it again. Unless it was a gift!!

We have just returned from a really fabulous trip from London to Venice on the beautiful VSOE. Words cannot describe how fantastic it was from start to finish. The staff are amazing and the food absolutely delicious! While on board I celebrated my 60th birthday and was surprised with a card in our cabin, plus a birthday cake and champagne after dinner. Thank you to the superb team in the Lalique restaurant car!Yes, the cabin was small but all part of the experience. Excellent use of the tiny space and the beds were comfortable. My birthday morning was enjoyed having breakfast in our cabin while watching the lovely scenery go past. Then onto the piano bar (very crowded the previous evening but a delight to visit the following day) for a coffee and drink before a sumptuous lunch. All was over too soon and I was very sad to leave the train on arrival in Venice. Thank you to all who made it a wonderful birthday celebration. Do go if you can as it is the best experience ever!

Luckily enough to be on the train for a second trip (due to unforeseen circumstances and an aborted journey first time round). We were treated to a large cabin and a welcome drink, (I assume because of the first trip) so our trip started amazingly. We had an amazing time. We dined in each of the individual dining carriages each with their own identity. The food is amazing and the chef of 33 years walks along the carriages to obtain feedback and talk to the guests. Sleeping in the cabins is an amazing experience, yes, they are small, especially the normal single cabins, but the beds are surprisingly comfortable and the experience cannot be beaten. The motion caused us no problems. We made friends with fellow guests and the time went extremely quickly, no time to pass with reading material we had brought along to pass the time. The staff were amazing, and we had common experiences with our cabin attendant when we conversed about common countries we had visited. Transferring from Calais to Folkestone took a little longer than we had envisaged due to the crossing delays, the coach was luxurious and the English Pullman was lovely but after two days on the Orient it was lovely, but we had experienced the English Pullman in its entirety one Christmas and enjoyed it more then, this time it felt like the end of a long journey. We were lucky enough to know what to expect the second time around, definitely a bucket list trip that must be taken if you so desire, the ambience, the history, the service, the staff, the food, the views, all mesmerising. Go do, go enjoy.

This really is a once in a lifetime experience so I surprised my wife with the classic London to Venice experience of the VSOE. The London to Dover part of the trip goes by in a whirl as there the initial experience of congregating at the private VSOE lounge in London's Victoria station feeling slightly conspicuous at first being very smartly dressed but then as more of our fellow passengers started to arrive the atmosphere became more of a party with everyone in very high spirits and full of anticipation of the trip before boarding the Belmont British Pullman part of the service. For the first leg we settled in to be served a beautiful high tea needless to say with Champagne and all of the trimmings you could possibly expect. It's not until we joined the actual VSOE wagons lit service on the continental side that the experience really took grip. We were introduced to Rupert our steward in his VSOE livery who from the moment we boarded to when we disembarked made sure we had everything we needed and did so with such style and humour and was a great conversationalist full of the most amazing (but very discreetly told) stories of what he'd seen during his time on board. No sooner are you on board as the French countryside starts flashing by and it's time to wonder about and familiarise ourselves with our beautiful surroundings and accommodation all of which are as you've seen in the movies but incredible to experience in the flesh. It's also amazing how quickly you become at comfort with the surrounding and adapt to the movement and rhythm of the train. A quick wash and freshen up before hitting the bar car for a quick drink before it was time to head back to our compartment to change for diner. I'd highly recommend the second sitting for diner as it'll give you more time to relax whilst getting dressed for diner. It's not every day you dress in black tie for diner and I'm usually not a fan of doing so as it usually makes me feel very self conscious but when onboard the VSOE it only seem natural. Then just as we're nearing Paris it's time to hit the Bar car again. By this time the lights have been dimmed and the pianist is already cranking out all the classic "easy listening" and "lounge" hits Gershwin, Cole Porter, Bacharach you name 'em he'll play 'em. Time to pass the time with some of the charming people that we met whilst enjoying a Martini (shaken not stirred - goes without saying) whilst still pinching yourself that this is actually happening. Then Dinner its self. How they did it in the kitchen (which were given the briefest of glimpses of) I'll never know. But all was superb and enjoyed amongst the most beautiful of surroundings with the chandalier light shining off of the Lalique crystal panelling and surrounded in the finest marquetry work wood panelling and velvet. Pure unadultared luxury. And then to bed to was up in Austria going through the Alps....Discover the rest yourself, if you've ever fantasised about doing it, just do it, book it. It's a once in a lifetime pleasure and something that shouldn't be missed. Many thanks Rupert, you are a gentleman and credit to the VSOE. Hope to see you again one day.Enjoy!

We stayed in London the night before so just had a short journey to Victoria for check-in, which was crowded with limited seating but once the train pulled in this was forgotten and the sheer luxury and First Class service took over!At brunch on the British Pullman, even our napkins were unfurled and placed on our laps, the food and service excellent, we had been warned about the coach journey and once we saw The VSOE waiting at Calais, the excitement took over! Shown to our stunning cabin by our very own steward, our step back in time stepped up a notch. Everything was perfect, as we dressed for dinner we had to pinch ourselves to believe we were really there!Seeing the cabin transformed, I felt a little claustrophobic at first but once we sorted ourselves out it was fine and the beds were comfy, although the noise and increased speed made sleep a challenge. The next day flew as we ate and admired the scenery - we arrived in Venice on time, transferred to the Cipriani where we toured the beautiful gardens and had a lovely meal at "Cips" over-looking the water, our room was nice but I didn't feel it matched the service on the train.Leaving the hotel via the Grand Canal was amazing, we arrived back at the station all too soon and we soon in a different cabin with a new steward but both were just as good. My partner had suffered a reaction to too much gluten and with a telephone call, all his meals had been adjusted - without prompting at each sitting. The fairytale continued back to London, where floods delayed our journey home, sadly. It was an amazing trip, we dressed in period clothes the whole time - in the evening, there is no "over-dressed" think sparkle and style. Staff are amazing on the trains, where nothing is too much trouble. The only complaint, on this not cheap trip, the waiters pushed very expensive bottles of wine in the restaurant cars - when we refused one due to medication, an alcohol-free one was strongly recommended - at huge cost! We just had to laugh at the drinks bill (better than crying) and say it was a once in a life-time trip!

An absolute must do and a grand excuse to dress up in DJ's and finery! We've had the good fortune to do a couple of lunches and dinners in the past and we never tire of them. The service and food were excellent and the carriages were beautiful. Special mentions to Michael and Danny for looking after us so well. In fact, they looked after us too well, never once letting our glasses run dry with a very pleasant selection of different champagnes from Laurent Perrier and all included in the cost of the ticket (I'm not a huge champagne drinker but I did enjoy them). If you're not keen on something on the menu, it's not a problem as the chef will conjure up a suitable and lovely alternative. The train departed Victoria at 18:50, did a huge loop past Dorking (no need to get off anywhere) and returned at around 23:30 but it felt like half an hour! There was entertainment on board with 3 lovely girls singing the old numbers such as chatanooga choo choo and boogie woogie bugle boy and wow, were they fantastic. There was even a magician on board and he was, well, magical! The only let down was the lounge when we first arrived (and we had the same criticism in Bangkok when arriviing there) as it's distinctly underwhelming and really needs sorting as this is where first impressions are made after all the excitement and anticipation and they're not great. Apart from that, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend the Orient Express to anyone looking for something special, whether for a lunch or dinner.

Trip of a lifetime, what else can I say, we were celebrating our wedding anniversary also my retirement. The whole experience exceeded our expectation. We had a wonderful time, well looked after in our carriage by Davide, he must get a mention as he was exceptional in looking after all our needs. The two days flew by as we enjoyed the luxury on board this iconic train journey. There were 3 restaurants on board and we selected 2 for our meals. As we had a wonderful evening meal we were presented with a creative desert to celebrate our wedding anniversary which was wonderful with thanks to the chef. I have only one suggestion regarding overcrowding that I do think requires attention. As there are 2 sittings for both evening meal and lunch the next day, a situation arose where the bar carriage was very full after one evening dining and people waiting for the second sitting. I can only describe it as travelling on network southern into London, the carriage was full with approximately 75 people. If we had been informed of this situation prior to the meal, we could have possibly changed our plans or asked the diners at the later sitting to come to the bar later as they were due for a meal. They had been there for 2 hours prior to their meal. I am afraid there was tension between a few of the guests that could have been avoided. I do understand that there was another bar which didn’t appear to be used that evening. I am sorry to have to identify this as an issue but I do understand the train manager does review all suggestions. It is very difficult with so many people and a restriction in space, all is required is that passengers are informed of this. Finally, may I say we had a trip of a lifetime and wouldn’t hesitate to suggest this to our friends.

The Orient Express experience was wonderful with a couple of bad experiences. We had to wait for at least an hour standing on platform 2, as there were no seats in the very small waiting room. Surely the numbers of passengers was known beforehand and considering the high cost of the trip Simpson could have arranged somewhere to sit and wait. Also the bar carriage was woefully inadequate. We attempted to get an after drink but were dismayed to find that the carriage resembled a rugby scrum. Apart from the high cost of the trip it was disappointing to say the least. We felt that profit was more important than the wellbeing of customers. Having said that our carriage attendant Rupert was exceptional, he could not have done more to make our trip memorable.

Wow! what can I say our 40th anniversary celebration will always hold lovely memories of a glamorous by-gone age. Every time I walked down the carriage corridors I expected to bump into Poirot. My review will be concise as I could go on and on so here goes-Victoria Plaza Hotel-check in was at this hotel and went very smoothly, the light refreshments offered were gratefully received as some guests had been travelling a long time, nice touch Bellmond!British Pullman to Folkstone ( and return)-each carriage quintessentially English the holiday starts here with brunch being served, loved it!Eurotunnel on a coach- as expected can't be any different but the glass of bubbly offered helped.VSOE-boarded at Calais ville cabins compact, bunk beds comfy so if it was good enough for Agatha Christie its good enough for us!Toilets-one per carriage, not a problem for the amount of time on the train.Carriage Stewards-attentive to your needs but discreet. To Tibault & Michael thank you!Dining-from a small kitchen galley they serve delicious cuisine and the waiters know if you cannot eat certain foods gives the whole experience a personal touch, how do they do it?Lounge bar-for about 15 minutes when the 1st dinner sitting ends and the 2nd starts its very over crowded but hey it gets you talking to your fellow guests when you bump into them, its fun!Bellmond Cipriani Hotel Venice-how spacious and opulent the rooms were if it was good enough for a certain American movie star its good enough for us fabulous!Porter service-Ran very smoothly and efficiently from London to Venice return our luggage was waiting for us when we arrived back at Victoria, well done Bellmond!Cost-If you wish to experience this adventure for whatever the reason accept that it will be expensive, enjoy!

Make no mistake, this is old school glamour and luxury. You will feel pampered from start to finish and is a wonderful insight to old money, as well as incredibly different way to travel. It makes travel an experience in itself. The trains are something to behold, really cleverly done and the service.... Another level. Nothing, and I mean nothing is too much trouble. Your cabin manager - Paulo in our case - will make your trip, but all the staff have the time to help, and do so with a willingness that's a credit to them all. You can really feel how much they love the train and what is stands for. Scenery through Italy and up through Alps Austria is incredible. A privilege to take in this way. Be aware this entire experience is a food and drink extravaganza. You are going to be overwhelmed by the standards and frequency of meals, a real foodie and gastronomic few days. Now I did say old school luxury - which does mean sleeping is tough. You'll be comfortable okay, but it's noisy as the trains speeds up through the night.Only slight negative is the disembarking that's required at Calais, and using coaches through tunnel to get to Folkestone before boarding the Pullman. If you think you left Venice at 11am and made it to Paris for 8am following morning, but then is takes until 6pm to get from Pais to London - it's a clunky part of journey that can't be helped due to nature of the British disconnected network system - not there fault but would make me think about doing Paris to Venice in opposite direction so I did not need bother with that part..All in all excellence personified.

We travelled on the VSOE in June 2016 from London to Venice and I can honestly say the experience was wonderful. The journey actually comprises two trains – the British Pullman in the UK and the Orient Express itself from France to Italy (via Switzerland) From first boarding in London to sadly leaving in Venice the service was excellent, not over powering but attentive and polite. The food could grace any Michelin restaurant (and I’ve eaten in several) and when you remember it is all made fresh on a train it is even more impressive. The British train comprises a series of Pullman carriages arranged as dining cars, each uniquely decorated and you are served brunch and Bellinis as you head to the Chunnel. A quick transfer to luxury coaches to cross the Channel and then we boarded the Orient Express. This train is a series of coaches comprised of individual compartments. In addition there are three restaurant cars and a bar car. The journey was perfect, the meals wonderful and the service impeccable. Everyone dressed for the occasion (Black Tie for evening meal) and I could honestly not fault it. The bar car can be busy at times but if you choose to eat at the later time you will find the bar is quiet both before and after dinner. The compartment was comfortable during the day and when converted to bunks they proved surprisingly good for a nights sleep. We arrived in Venice far too soon for my liking (although right on time as per schedule) I could have stayed on the train for a whole lot longer. If you are even thinking about doing it - just do it. Thanks to all the staff of the VSOE and particularly Arnaud our steward for making our trip so perfect.

I have noticed that some reviews refer to day trips, some to trips on the UK train to places other than Folkestone and some on the VSOE to European destinations. These experiences are not necessarily comparable - especially the catering. This review is about a trip to Venice from London Victoria - pity Trip Advisor doesn't have an entry just for this. We had a fantastic trip but there were a few niggles. This is unashamedly a long review but I have included things I would have liked to have read before traveling. The check in arrangements at Victoria were a little tedious because the room they have on Platform 1/2 is not big enough to hold all the passengers and their carry on luggage so we queued outside getting colder and colder (even though it was April snow was forecast that morning) until we managed to creep inside the door. The three check in staff were very efficient and polite but clearly swamped by the volume of passengers, all of whom seemed to have a specific problem or query to resolve. Come on VSOE this simply isn't good enough for the start of a luxury trip - especially considering the high cost of tickets. The welcome on board was warm and felt genuine and the steward in our sumptuously decorated carriage had a wonderfully cheeky sense of humour immediately serving a glass of champagne. The seating was in pairs in loose armchairs at fixed tables, so plenty of room between passengers. The train takes a very circuitous route to Folkestone to allow time for the 'Brunch' and goes very slowly most of the time so as not to get anything spilled. We had been warned by friends who had been on the trip to expect high volumes of high quality food and drink and yes the quality was there but since we had only a light meal the evening before and no Breakfast that morning in anticipation we did feel the quantity could have been higher to tide you over to the evening meal on the Wagons Lits train in France. Otherwise the journey to Folkestone was faultless. We then were transferred onto road coaches to the channel tunnel shuttle train. The coaches were comfortable and we were plied with Prosecco and snacks but traveling through the tunnel in a coach in a container was not particularly enjoyable. Such a pity that the VSOE train carriages are not fitted with appropriate equipment to allow them to travel through the tunnel. The transfer to the French train at Calais was smooth and we were met at the train by the catering staff lined up on the platform with each carriage steward waiting at the carriage door to show you to your cabin. The cabins are very lavishly decorated with marquetry in the polished wood and etched mirror and include a curved cupboard containing a reasonable sized handbasin, shaver point, mirror, towels, soap and a hidden waste bin. There was also a complimentary pack of high quality facial care products. There is a rack for luggage which doesn't get in the way of the conversion to bunks. The seats are very soft and comfortable but we did find the bolsters did not aid comfort and actually got in the way - so we removed them to benefit from the full depth of the seats. The service from the steward was attentive polite and prompt and was always on hand in the carriage to provide help, advice and directions to the restaurant cars and lounges. Each carriage has a single WC furnished in keeping with the period of the carriages and finely decorated in polished wood with a stone floor and sturdy Victorian sanitaryware. All working well and clean. There are no showers (as you would in a train and especially one of such age) but I had heard that VSOE were considering installing them in the future. The cabin is somewhat small for changing into evening wear so my wife and I took it in turns. I had toyed with the idea of settling on a smart suit but was glad I changed my mind and went for black tie dinner suit. By far the majority of gents did the same and it made the evening more special. The steward asked if we would like a table on our own (two seat table) for dinner or would be happy to share with another couple (4 seat table). We chose the latter. We were able to lock the door before moving to our allocated dining car - fantastically decorated with Lalique glass plaques on the walls. The meal itself was top notch but does not include alcoholic drinks - which have to be purchased separately. The wine list was extensive and I did wonder where they stored it all! There was a 'healthy' option for each item on the menu meaning they cut down on fat and sugar but essentially was otherwise the same as the ingredients listed. Nice touch. After the meal there was no pressure from the staff to vacate the table for the second sitting (mainly passengers joining at Paris) but after a long chat with the couple sharing our table we tried moving to the lounge for drinks, but we were beaten to it by many others so there was no room to sit and barely enough room to stand. Therefore, if you want to have an after dinner drink then head off to the lounge as soon as you finish your meal.On returning to our cabin the steward had pulled the seat back up to form the top bunk and added a ladder. The bunks were surprisingly comfortable but understandably constrained by the carriage dimensions to just over 6' long so very tall passengers might find it cramped. Having gone a stately speed whilst we were eating we soon found the train was on a minor line taking a winding route down to Switzerland at quite a speed. For some unknown reason the driver was driving seemingly close to the speed limit for the line and then after a couple of hours halting for an hour in some sidings. I could not hear any passing traffic so can only guess why he was in such a rush. Just dropping off to sleep and off we go again. Suffice to say we didn't get much sleep. I would have though passenger comfort would dictate taking the same stately progress we had made during our two meals. What's going on here VSOE?Breakfast in our cabin whilst traveling through the Swiss Alps was very memorable and lunch in the dining car was just as good as the previous evening's meal. Afternoon in the lounge drinking coffee and having snacks was only marred by some passengers sitting down in tatty jeans. VSOE does ask that jeans are excluded for the trip but some people just can't help themselves! Somewhat spoilt the 'special' nature of the trilp for that stretch.Arrival in Venice late afternoon was magical (and a lot warmer than freezing London) and the staff very attentive at ensuring everyone got off safely and into the water taxis. We had a deal that included two nights in the Cipriani which was a phenomenal way to end this special trip. All in all we are glad we made the trip, would recommend it to anyone but, having done it, wouldn't rush back.

We decided to do something special for our 25 wedding anniversary, and took the return trip to Venice on the VSOE. What an experience we had - we were treated like royalty from start to finish, and had the best time ever. The food on the train is exceptional and would happily grace any Michelin starred restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, and the attention to detail was quite extraordinary. It was without doubt the trip of a lifetime, and one that will live long in the memory. My tip would be to do the return journey if you can - going only one way would have been too short and it would have felt like it was over too soon......its expensive, but I doubt we will do it again so well worth it.

From the checking in at Platform 2 on Victoria Station, London to boarding the train and sitting in the carriage named Cygnus (all the carriages have different names) to the journey through the Kent countryside and back again was a complete joy. The staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble, the tea was delicious, the ambience and the other passengers on board were specially nice. We decided to try a new experience of the Orient to Venice. We stayed over in London the night before and arrived at Victoria station platform 2! There was a queue to register but once there, our bags were taken (be warned you won't see your hand luggage til France) and we were informed which carriages we were on in the English and French side. The waiting area was full so we lingered on the platform. Once in our carriage (Ibis) everything was sumptuous! Beautiful place settings and we were encouraged to visit other carriages for the full effect. Lovely food and excellent service! We then arrived to a band playing to be trf'd to France via the channel tunnel. There were no delays and everything ran smoothly. We got on the Orient again in France and shown to our cabin. It was small but we were expecting that and the layout was very clever. We had a lovely evening meal and pre-drinks in the piano bar. Make sure you get your timings right as the piano bar gets VERY busy! We stopped in Paris and that's when a new driver got on! We went back to our cabin which had been amended to bunk beds ( top bunk accessed by a ladder, not for the faint hearted!) expecting a good nights sleep. This was not the case! We were awake all night as the train hurtled along at a terrifying speed around corners. I honestly thought we were going to de-rail! Such a shame as in England the speed was very sedate. This spoilt the experience for us, a member of staff even said they had a racing driver in charge tonight and it was ridiculous, we agree! Overall beautiful food and surroundings but we wouldn't go again due to the awful night time experience. Those who did appear to sleep had spent a good time at the bar previously and maybe this was our downfall as we didn't. Indeed a brandy would've been welcomed!!

From the moment we checked in at platform 4 St Lucia Station Venice we knew it was going to live up to our expectations. The service and quality of the food was impeccable. The train is beautifully presented and a pleasure to travel on. The staff are friendly but always very courteous and professional. The journey went smoothly until we encountered Network Rail at Folkestone (points failure) which made us reach London Victoria about 45 mins later than scheduled but I think the way Belmond staff dealt with the situation by keeping everyone informed and laying on hot drinks meant that most passengers accepted it and enjoyed the afternoon tea trip to Victoria when the train eventually arrived. We went to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and it didn't disappoint.

A special trip to celebrate a 50th birthday, four of us travelled from London Victoria to Venice on Sunday 3rd October. Arrived in plenty of time, handed out cases in and went for a coffee and tea, lady serving was was rather curt and inappropriate ( the only blot on the weekend). The rest of the trip was amazing, just sit back and be pampered. It was everything we hoped and more. Brunch on the way to folkestone was delicious and the coach transfer smooth if a little overlong due to the train not being ready for us. A small issue quickly forgotten. Then we boarded the real thing. A beautiful train fit for kings and we were made to feel like royalty. Don't think about going, just do it. You won't regret it. 99% satisfied, only the refreshment at Victoria station was below expectations. All in all a trip of a lifetime!

Left the waiting lounge to watch as the train slowly appeared, bagpipes were being played and impeccably dressed staff unlocked the clear partitions to greet & direct you to your carriage. 8 ppl to this carriage. Each carriage had a server who ensured your comfort throughout the evening. Dinner: canapés, starter, mains, puddings, cheeses, mince pies etc if you like particular dining I would recommend requesting a menu. Really impressed with the fact that we could offset the cost of our half bottle of complimentary wine against the price of a bottle of champagne instead. Entertainment: a magician & a singing guitar playing duo. It's was so comfortable we forgot we were on a train! It was also quite fun to be waved to by the locals on the way! Firework display at 12 whilst still aboard. Only recommendation: A professional photographer on the platform to take pictures of guests as the journey is definetly an experience to capture. Quite simply the experience from start to finish was excellent; sitting in the fabulously decorated and individual carriages eating the most delicious food I have every tasted on a train, whilst being served fine wines and being entertained and challenged by a Murder Mystery... What is there not to like?!The service we received from all of the staff was exemplary. We could not believe the standard of food we were being served, given that we were on a train; hot, delicious and well presented. The wines accompanying each course were fabulous. The actors playing their parts in the Murder Mystery (part of this particular event) were devilishly entertaining and engaging. There was nothing at all not to recommend this experience except that every other train journey you take will just feel hideous by comparison.

First let me say that the food and service on this day trip to Sandringham was very good. I booked a table for 2, months in advance with the specific request that we had window seats facing each other. When we boarded we had been allocated the only table in the carriage where we were sitting alongside one another with my seat sticking out into the corridor! On top of this the heating was totally inadequate with my wife having to wear my jacket throughout the evening meal. It didn't help to be told this was a known problem in that carriage (Phoenix)! My wife had previously enjoyed a wonderful day on the Orient Express, either we were very unlucky or their standards have slipped well below what is expected. My husband and I spent a wonderful day on the British pullman, it was an absolutely perfect and indulgent experience, amazing food, beautiful vintage carriages and faultless staff. Our stewards, Thomas, Rachel and Roy made us feel like we were royalty. (This was a comment made by all the other passengers we spoke to.) Their service was first class, efficient, polite ,friendly and very professional. We spent a very pleasurable 6 hours, watching the world go by, set back in time, in our gorgeous carriage, Lucile, relaxing in huge comfortable seats, indulging in a delicious 5 course meal consisting of terrine, pea soup, hake wrapped in Parma ham, raspberry and hibiscus jelly, coffee and petit fours. 2 glasses of champagne and a lovely bottle of wine were also part of the price. (The wine list is fantastic,) the house wines at £26 a bottle are well selected and reasonably priced. There are many more higher priced wines should you want to really splash out, but personally I felt the house wines were exceptional. We arrived in hove to a fabulous jazz band, we left the train with a glass of champagne in our hand and was treated to a brilliant performance before heading back on the train to return to London. We wandered through the train on our journey back, seeing each different but very beautiful carriage. Alan, another warm and friendly steward gave us lots of information on the history of the carriages, and took us to see the Art Deco carriage and pointed out the beautiful tiled floor of Perseus and medusa in one of the bathrooms. All of the staff, Samantha at check in, all of the staff and stewards onboard and the amazing chefs were so friendly and professional. They are all very passionate about their jobs. As were the managers who checked we were enjoying our journey, and that we were being looked after efficiently. Which we were! There are some lovely souvenirs to buy to remember your experience on the iconic and beautiful orient express. This is an experience which is well worth the cost, and I am already planning our next trip on this beautiful classic train.

We enjoyed our trip to Venice (out from London Victoria on the Pullman, Orient Express from Calais). The service and food were exceptional, as was Rupert, our cabin steward. The bunks were more comfortable than expected. The whole experience (gorgeous views, lazing around, and being so well looked after) was wonderful. On the downside, there is not a lot of choice of menu (they will give salad instead of a starter, or sorbet/ice cream instead of dessert, but if the main course is not to your taste the a la carte options are limited, and in the 40-50 Euro region). The wine is ferociously expensive, and not included in the trip price. Be aware that the cabins are TINY! We are both slim, and I am short, but we were late to dinner because we had to take it in turns to do things while the other sat down out of the way! And once the seat is changed to bunks, with a ladder up, it is impossible to do anything except go to bed! Toilets are at each end of a long carriage, and there are no bathrooms, just a wash basin in the cabin cupboard. We got little sleep (the train rocketed along, jolting wildly from side to side, and every so often conneted to overhead cables which made loud noises). Others slept very well, though. The train stopped in a siding from approx 5.30am to 7.30 the first morning, so there was nothing to see from the window, and you are not meant to use the loo when the train is stationary, which was a bit of an issue at that time of day! Good overall, but wouldn't do it again.

This was a surprise Birthday treat from my husband for me and it certainly was wonderful.Taken back in time on The Orient Express in Gwen our carraige the staff were all super efficient , polite and very attentive and friendly. The meal was 5 courses all truely delicious with an excellent choice of wines etc. We disembarked for 45 mins to celebrate the new year in the platform with fireworks then headed home back onboard enjoying a delicious dessert , coffee etc. The decor was lovely with very comfortable arm chairs and we were given several souveneirs of our trip to take home. What a magical experience and one I will always cherish.

My daughter won a trip on the Orient Express for two people and very graciously gave it to her Dad and me and we were both over the moon.It really didn't disappoint and certainly met my expectations. The food was definitely 5 star and the service exceptional. Our menu consisted of:Cured Salmon Gravadlax with Smoked Salmon and Broccoli Parfait, Mixed leaf Salad and Horseradish Cream;Garden Pea Soup served with a minted Creme Fraiche;Roast Gressingham Duck Breast with Pancetta, Shallot and tarragon Cafe au Lait, Baby New Potatoes and Seasonal VegetablesSelection of Cheeses from the British Isles with Homemade ChutneyToffee Apple Cheesecake with Salted Toasted pecans CrumbleRainforest Alliance CoffeeWe paid an extra £47 for a selection of wines to accompany each course of the meal and although it might seem a bit extravagant we believe it was well worth it.Also......... oysters at Whitstable!! (I don't like them but a lot of fellow passengers did!!)

This was a special event with Raymond Blanc doing the cooking so it was quite expensive at over £400 per head. The pre-dinner cocktails went down a treat with 12 spices. The carriages are stunning right down to the tiniest detail and lovingly restored and looked after. The staff are relaxed, friendly, attentive and helped make the evening memorable, especially Roy. The food in comparison isn't up to normal Le Manoir standards and I can understand that -the kitchens are tiny so the first 3 courses are served cold - I was looking forward to something hot on a cold November evening it was delicious but lacked that 'wow' factor until it came to the most sublime beef main course that melted in the mouth. You do get to meet Raymond and are treated to a complimentary cookbook of his and some excellent extras. It has always been on our wish list and appreciate how hard everyone works- its part of the whole experience of a bygone era. It didn't matter where we were travelling to as it was dark so Surrey looks the same as everywhere else but impressed we were back in Victoria bang on schedule and that's something not a lot of other rail companies can boast these days. We were in 'Audrey' carriage - beautiful 1920's panelling and detail - but then they all are! Bravo to everyone involved and especially to Raymond who looked pooped by the end of it all!

We went on the Orient Express on 26th June 2013 to celebrate our Silver wedding Anniversary. Our journey was from London Victoria to Chesterfield in Derbyshire a with a trip to Chatsworth House included. The whole day was amazing. the brunch on the outward journey was superb, it was served over the course of a few hours so you didn't end up feeling overfull. The service was first class and the staff could not do enough for us.After spending a lovely afternoon in Chatsworth house we boarded the train for the return journey which takes four hours. We were welcomed aboard with a glass of champagne and canapes and went on to enjoy a fantastic 6 course meal. Once again the food was outstanding and served throughout the return journey. We could not fault it.The atmosphere in the 1930's built carriage was romantic and luxurious. We would recommend this for any special occasion and something that we will remember forever.

As I am reviewing this as a restaurant I have to say that food wise this is hands down the biggest rip off I have ever experienced. At £310 a head you can eat at most 3 star places. I had been looking forward to this for months after my colleague had suggested it as a good way of entertaining a group of clients. Things got off to a promising start with the stuffed fig but then went quickly downhill. The guinea fowl terrine was completely bland, it could have come out of a tin. The soup was even more tasteless. Then the salmon came along and it had been cooked to the point of bone dry. It was almost inedible. There is no excuse for this. I've had a fantastic dining experience on the Melbourne Tram and had a similar menu cooked for over a hundred at a christman lunch. Things did pick up with the cheese. I think the waitress either had taken a shine to my companiion or had overheard him remarking on what a rip off it was, as he got served nearly half the cheese board. Dessert came and went in a bit of a blur as the "free" house wine had taken a hold by now. The service felt mechanical throughout. Certainly didnt get the impression many of the staff enjoyed or felt enthused by their job.OK, this is more than just a meal but once you had actually got on the carriage and got accustomed to the unusaul seating arrangement then the actual journey is pretty non descript. i feel they could do more with this to make it an actual experience or signiicantly upgrade the quality of the food. The seating is set up as four sets of two seats facing one another. The staff wouldnt let us change seats due to the dietary requirements, which is fair enough, but its not the best arrangement to entertain clients. There are many more things in London and the south east to spend £310 a head on.

Overall this is a rather special way to spend an afternoon especially when someone else pays the £310 cost. The food was good, not excellent but the service from Roy, Thomas, Mitchell and the team was brilliant. The murder mystery helped pass the time even if the story was thin and we didn't get to meet all the cast.As a special event I'm sure most people (especially of a certain age) will love it.

We originally went on the New Years eve trip - having done the same a previous year - and found ourselves this time highly disappointed. The champagne was swopped for sparkling wine, disappointing food, no entertainment to see the New Year in and arrived back into the station majorly early. We felt that for the money paid we had been short changed. Having said that, we wrote and complained and were offered a complimentary day trip - The Golden Age of Travel - to show that the finese was there and that they could do things right. We had a lovely day - with the food being much better and fantastic service - but still some how felt that it has lost its wow factor. The scenery was disappointing and really felt that it needs a bit of music or entertainment on the train especially for the cost of the trip. Would we go again - probably not.

The famous Orient Express runs a fantastic programme of special trips to/from London's Victoria Station [see orient-express.com or phone UK 0203 117 1585].A jolly welcome is awaiting at the platform edge and the friendly, efficient crew show one to the appointed comfortable seats. A glass of Champagne sets the tone very nicely. As the train [often-but-not-always an historic steam engine] gently pulls away to cover the chosen route [my occasion was a tour of Surrey and Sussex], the meal service begins. Standard of food and availability of fine wines is the very best that may be imagined; far exceeding any other mobile catering. This is an ideal way to mark any special occasion. I highly recommend it.
