Very good food and great customer service.

Chip portion size seems to shrink every few months. The pickled gherkins are not pickled. This used to be one of my favourite chip shops but since trying to do more food choices the fish and chips quality have slipped.

Fantastic service. The food is fantastic. I only wish they would takeaway the large delivery charges. Apparently you have to spend £20 then it’s another £2.50 on top. Fair enough, I don’t live far from them, but I am disabled.

Nice friendly staff. Food was good. Only negative was the taste of the vinegar, not sure what it was but it had an unusual flavour.

0 stars, I had the rock because it said "fresh today", the worst piece of fish I've ever been served in my life I tasted it and spat it out smelled horrible I gave it all to the seagulls! Most of the reviews for this place are dreadful and most of the Answers from the establishment are ridiculous. There is not an easy way to reply to a reply, I think that Google need to change this. If people are going to the trouble of leaving a review they should have the facility to reply to the reply.

I always feel sad to write a one star review as it’s people’s livelihoods but….they also need to know. Having used the ‘Friar’ many times in previous visits over the years and had reasonable fish and chips this was a real disappointment. Stopped for a lunch. The fish batter was wet inside, almost slimy. The oil can’t have been hot enough or food in for long enough. The chips were pale and limp with no taste. Having eaten a range of fish and chips from brilliant to poor this is the first time we have not even finished half the food. We didn’t bother returning to complain as we had a timetable to keep to. The bottles inside the fridge on a shelf were all leaning over and not tidy. Whilst 2 portions of fish and chips was £21.98 which I don’t mind paying if it was good and enjoyable Really need to learn how to cook fish and chips properly if the current owners want to continue. Would not recommend and will not be back.

Unfortunately, the chips had not been freshly cooked & almost unpalatable. The fish was freshly cooked.

Ordered delivery for dinner, their fried popcorn chicken was amazing, chips fresh and tasty. Haddock piece was big and perfectly cooked, batter crispy just what was needed after a long day out. Living in Gerrards Cross this chippie is life saver, best one in bucks and only 30 minutes till my food came. Love it

It was a 3/4 stars for me. I’ve given 4 as pleasantly surprised. Especially after reading the reviews I was expecting the fish and chips to be a disaster. Ordered 3 portions and all three of us have said it was good. Cooked well, tasty and not overly greasy. The Panjabi folk are running the place now (not sure who was in the past but the kebab and appear to be doing well. It was a Friday and fairly busy so things were going to be fresh. Good customer service from the young chap. Well done. Shukria

Excellent fish and chips. My family and I absolutely love it, especially the chips! Will definitely stop here more often.

I think I had one bad overcooked piece of fish, genuinely I’ve only ever done fish and chips and/or sausage and chips. The fish is always consistently cooked, never overgreasy, and be warned they are huge, that fish is enough for two to three people to share, the batter is always crunchy and tasty, and the fish melts in your mouth. The chips are bug, chunky, and again never greasy and are a good texture, portions are always huge so can be overwhelming for one person. Very popular local place in town, because it’s quick easy and convenient so can get busy, but good for quick, cheap and easy eats.

Immaculate chips and sausage, nice and big. Perfect fit for my mouth, my daughter loves a bit of sausage down her goblet x

Lost for words…that’s grease and water. So fish is frozen I’d say. It was over cooked as it was crumbling and had no taste to it. £6:3ish for a medium fish I asked for a few chips n curry sauce some how they were a extra £4+ Never again I can’t believe some people rated as 5* you need to shop around more.

My wife and I recently moved into the area and as we enjoy our fish and chips, we have tried 5 fish and chip shops all within a 4 mile radius of our house. We have both separately visited the Old Town Friar in the last 6 weeks and the customer service from this shop is head and shoulders above the rest with the worst customer service. On my visit there was no greeting and the man looked liked he wanted to be anywhere but serving in the shop. When my food was boxed up it was literally thrown across the counter to me. My wife visited the shop a couple of weeks later just so we could get a second opinion, just in-case it was a one off, but I'm afraid it was just the same if not worse. Again there was no greeting, no smile and with only 3 customers in the shop, he had to keep asking all 3 what there orders were. The food to be honest wasn't that bad, but the extremely poor customer service means a 2 star rating and we will not be going back again.

I've been coming here for four years. I wasn't aware that there had been a change in management because the quality of the food is excellent, as before. The fish is always freshly cooked and excellent, and the chips have always been perfect. Their chip portions are generous, too. Service has always been polite and quick.

Hadn't been here for some time and didn't realise it had changed hands. Stopped on the way home as I knew there was noting much in house to cook.

This place has re-opened under new management.. I was glad to hear it was to re-open as it’s always a favourite in the old town.

We loved the previous shop so have been hoping that the fall in standard was just a blip when it opened under new management and have tried to persevere! But we've tried again today and the food really is poor. I didn't think it was possible to do bad chips but they were so floppy and unpleasant they ended up in the bin.

Just eaten a large Cod and Chips, with mushy peas and curried sauce and for £13.00 it was awful, the cod was covered in a sponge coating and the chips were more like crisps and cool. I can honestly say I have tasted much better and at half the price. I think the shop must be under new ownership as in the past it was of good quality, but worth the high price.

We were actually looking forward to the re-opening of this fish & chip shop full of anticipation as to whether there would be any changes to the menu perhaps a cheeky kebab.

Used to come to this fish and chip shop all the time when I lived in beaconsfield and it was a shame to go into there today to a completing different atmosphere, only one person in there, food on the counter that looked dry, asked for a plain sausage and it didn’t look very appetising. (See photo attached) chips were kind of cooked.

There should be a demarcation line between reviews for the take-away that closed at the end of 2018 and this new venture. The old place was great for soups and sandwiches and the fish and chips were alright to good and sometimes very good depending on the day, but very expensive with meager fish portions for the money. The high price has been commented many times here and even though I work in the Old Town I would sometimes drive to another Fish and Chip Shop in the New Town as their small cod was as big or bigger than a large cod in the Old Town.

We went here last night for fish and chips and it was absolutely disgusting. The fish was fried to a point where there was no fish left in there batter! The man behind the counter accused me of putting it in the microwave when we don’t even own one! Was a complete waste of money even our dogs didn’t eat it!

We have been here several times with the kids as I cannot fault the authentic and seriously good fish and chips. But sadly popularity has clearly led to the price being much less appealing than the quality of the food that they dish up. The boxes are a great way for you to dander across the road to the green areas outside the church and consume your dish. Price wise makes it a 2nd or 3rd option to a pizza or dastardly McDonalds.

Traditional battered fish and chips, with a wide choice of accompaniment. Meringues and heathy options, mushy peas and wallies. Efficient friendly counter service with keen back up staff.

Large cod and chips cooked to perfection. Mushy peas a great add on. Pre ordered which saved the wait time. Could not resist a couple of pickled onions. A great take out establishment and great fish and chips.

Needed to feed a family gathering at short notice and the Town Friar was nearest to hand so an order was phoned ahead. Mixture of choices - cod and haddock - but all went down well. Nothing left but cleared plates - always a good sign! Both the chips and fish had been well drained before packing so nothing was greasy; the fish batter being dry and crisp. A fish and chip meal doesn't come any better!

Very welcoming place friendly service even though I was eating salad and not fish and chips which was a shame as it all looked fresh and lovely still it was prepared fresh and yummie.

Large cod and medium haddock. Both beautifully cooked and no wait, ready and available. Perfect. Chips equally good and perfect. Only fault I have is to park is a challenge.

Best fish and chips...homemade tartar sauce. Valentine treat with champagne!!! Superb. We eat out often. Tonight is always different elsewhere...menus tend to be limited so we chose to eat fish and chips at home, with champagne. Great decision.

Regularly visit here. Fish is pretty much cooked to order, the chips are great too. Homemade coleslaw and tartare sauce are delicious. Huge menu, good choice of portion sizes.

Delicious chips, perfectly seasoned with salt and vinegar. Some small crispy bits, along with 'chippy' chips that are slightly soft, but warm and fluffy on the inside. Fish is very tasty also, they do a small portion which is perfect if you want to enjoy the fish and chips and not feel too full after. Good service, never kept waiting long. I am recently turned gluten free, so hopefully I can still order from here, even if it just one portion :)

Haddock and chips £9.95 for one. Fish tasted bitter, small amount of chips, warm not hot. I shall never return.

Needed somewhere to fill up after a day out sightseeing. Came across this place and sat at the only table inside. I had fish and chips, which was very good. My wife opted for the salmon salad, which she said it was delicious. My daughter had the chicken strips, which were also well received. Therefore, I cannot fault the food. The speed of service was fine, considering there were only 2 staff, and the lady who took our orders and served was relaxed and polite. What more could you ask for?

I don't mind spending money on food I eat out a few times a week but this fish and chip shop is just average nothing amazing but so expensive we sat in and ate we spent over £30 on prawns with no sauce for them no sweet chilli etc prawn cocktail with only about 4 prawns two chips cod savaloy and butter roll.... every sauce we wanted we was charged even though we sat in! We still ate out of the cardboard boxes it was just bit of a rip off I won't be going back my local chippy is much better and my home made prawn cocktail is ten times better.... I would give advice not to charge sitting in customers for ketchup and serve sauce with your tempura prawns like every other restraunt.....

I used to get my fish and chips here. However I have since switched to smiles in the new town. Although the meals are nice I find Smiles are open most of Saturday and are more accessible timing wise. The Old Town Friar are good but need to open more to fit in with customers who are not local. E

The fish and chips here are good value. Top tip - much of the fish is cooked freshly to order and takes a few minutes so if you're hungry then it's worth asking what's ready.

I popped in here last week after having missed the bus to Wooburn so I thought I would have a wander around Beaconsfield Old Town. I do love fish and chips and wasn't disappointed with The Old Town Friar. I asked for a child portion and they obliged as that is enough for me, I think if I had paid a little extra I could have got a drink and a toy but I was happy with what I had bought. Staff were friendly and the place was clean. I sat outside to eat. It wasn't long until they had to start to close up for the afternoon, they let me sit there until the last moment. I could have sat there for much longer as the weather was lovely. I will be back when next in the area.

A little more pricey than your average fish and chip shop, but worth it! Staff are very friendly, the portions are generous, the menu is extensive and everything tastes great.

The fish is a little pricey but it is fresh and doesn't have that typical twang that you often get when buying fish at a fish shop. The service was good and you have the ability to eat inside or out as the vendor supplies a couple of small tables. The opening hours are not always ideal for me and I find myself going to smiles in the new town but when open and I can get here this is a good location.

Friendly staff in a spotlessly clean venue with very good food - well worth a visit. There aren't many places for a sandwich type lunch in the Old Town which make this place all the more useful.

Was looking for somewhere to have a light lunch and discovered this place. We had fabulous sandiches - I had a brie, bacon and salad baguette, which was great. The coffee was good too and the service was exceptional.

My first visit the the haddock and chips were excellent. The owner stated the haddock was fresh not frozen like other fish. The haddock was amazing. Having been treated to such high standards I decided to go out of my way to visit again. I live in Slough so was a bit of a drive. I must have passed at least 5 other fish and chip shops. I knew it would be worth it and I would eat in my car so it wouldn't get cold by the time I got home. So I went on Sat evening 02-04-16. It was raining so the shop was empty. The time was about 8.35pm. I ordered haddock and chips and was served with food from display cabinet. I was charged £8. My car was just out side so decided to eat in it. As soon as I started to eat the food I knew this had been cooked a while ago and had been sitting around. The fish and chips were warm not hot. As I grudgly ate my food a member of staff came outside and took in the sign board. And closed the shop windows. That's when I realised why my food was cold. Unknowingly I had come in just before they closed. It is a practice ( which I hate ) that nearly all fast food outlets cook various item on the menu just before they close so the can start cleaning machines etc etc so the staff can go home on time. Having spent £8 and been served the standard of food I was given I really wish I had arrived about 15 mins later to find the shop closed . Customers pay the price asked by food outlets and expect food of a certain standard that reflect s that price . The customer should not suffer for the staffs eagerness to get home. It would be better to switch of machines and tell customers that food is sold out then to serve below the shops certain standard food. I would still recommend this shop but would advise to avoid near closing times. The staff member was polite and shop was clean.

As always the fish and chips were excellent. The homemade coleslaw and tartare sauce is amazing and the mixed salad was v good too. Thoroughly recommend the Old Town Friar.

My husband just bought one pack of large chips and a piece of haddock, supposedly large but was a small size; he paid £15! What a rip off! I think I'll stick to Smiles in Beaconsfield.

Have now had a take away 3 times and never falls short of excellent. Fish cake, fish and chips unbelievably good. Ok it is small and slightly pricier than your average run of the mill chip pie. This however is in a different class!Biscuits, cakes etc just fantastic. Don't knock small good quality businesses like this- support them and let them flourish. This place is fantastic! Go visit it and see for yourself.

This is primarily a takeaway - and a popular one so be prepared to queue and note that it closes at 8.30pm. Food is consistently good, fish batter always light and crisp and the chips well cooked. They also serve great home made cookies, filled baguettes made fresh on the premises with unusual fillings like pulled pork and coleslaw, pots of salad with prawns, lime and coriander. Everything cooked and prepared fresh, so you may have to wait but it's worth it. Go back three times or more and you are greeted like an old friend.

This is a takeaway fish and chip shop with a few tables to eat inside. As such you have plastic cutlery and paper plates and have to pay for the ketchup If you are sitting inside. Excellent quality food and friendly service. Prices are higher but not excessive and this is old Beaconsfield!In addition to fish a wide range of salads,baguettes, sandwiches and ice creams are available.So great choices for takeaway customers.

I popped in on my way home last week as I fancied a bag of chips with my supper. To my shock, a large bag of chips ( which was a decent portion, but not huge) was £2.90. I would expect to pay £2.90 for chips or fries in a restaurant , but not a bog standard bag of chips from a chippie. Nice chips though, but £2.90 is just not a reasonable price in my opinion.

I only noticed this chippy because of their sign by the road! I had fish cake a sausage was a great dinner would definately go back. Slightly pricey but worth it! :)

we stopped here on the way to london and had excellent fish and ships. Hake and chips cost around £10 which was quite expensive. there is a table for eating at. the most impressive thing here is the reange of gourmet salads which were also on the menu. a little unexpected for a chip shop.

My work colleagues and I often buy delicious and healthy soups, salads and baguettes for lunch only working around the corner. The food is always freshly made to order using high quality ingredients and there is always an extra touch of seasoning, seeds on salads and fresh bread with soup. We are greeted with a smile, the shop is always clean and welcoming, the overall experience very pleasing! see you soon, thanks!

Popped into this fish and chip shop with my mother to treater for glorious fish and chips very much disappointed with chips and a fishcake and chips I had. ChipsDidn't Boyles there won't crisping full of grease no flavour soggy make me feel that bill afterwards commanded Greece in the standard of the fishcake potatoes dried I can sit in there for too long The fish my mother had was quite nice it was a small fish and chips but it seems really expensive for The baton officials that greasy wasn't very good as well very expensive one it was not good value whatsoever was greatly disappointing that down by this fish and chip shop Time I visited about one 13.15 subjects should be fresh and tastings good I pass for other fish and chip shops to go to this one again was wasting my time visit and entries my mother for a meal Adrian

I must say these were the worst fish and chips I've ever had soggy chips with no flavour the smallest piece of fish I have ever seen for the rip off price of £7 for a takeaway no excuses the lady serving there has worked there years so she knew they were rubbish

I happen to be in Beaconsfield this evening and wanted something quick and tasty to eat.Drove past the this place once and decided to turn around and pop in as it's been ages since I've had fish and chips.From the outside it looks great, nicely decorated, clean and welcoming. The menu is quite large, full of thinks like salmon and prawns which is different but adds to the variety.I ordered a large haddock and chips, with a side order of mushy peas. Contrary to some of the reviews here, the chips are great, they're quite large, grease free and mine were freshly made as I had to wait 5-6 mins for my order. The fish equally was well cooked and also not too greasy either. All-in-all a lovely quick and filling supper which hit the spot. I can highly recommend this place and I will definitely be going again.

Ate chips there tonight, soggy and not cooked well, no flavour. Shop looked tidy etc BUT have you tried the chips at 'Godfreys' High St, Harpenden?? they are so much better it is hard to describe how good they are. Wouldn't go to Old Town friar again.

The Old Town Friar is miles more than just a chippy. There is an extremely varied menu with wholesome, freshly made soups and salads with delicious walnut oil dressing and wonderful, moreish cookies and lemon meringue ice cream. The staff are really lovely and welcoming. It is so clean and polished you feel confident that they all take a pride in hygiene and cleanliness. However, above all this you want to know what the fish and chips are like: freshly cut potatoes on shop premises, fresh fish, high quality oil and freshly fried make for a lush flavour. This are the many reasons why I love going to the OTF every week.

The Old Town Friar is exceptional.....wonderful fish and chips but plenty of other food on offer too. Amazing salads, sandwiches and baguettes and their home made soup and cakes are superb. Spotlessly clean and the lady who serves most weekday lunchtimes always greets her customers with a smile and is very friendly and efficient. Definitely worth a visit if you live or work in Beaconsfield or are just visiting!

Both the fish and the chips were freshly cooked and tasty but the best things about The Old Town Friar are the ambience and attitude and this was all because of the woman behind the counter. It's worth mentioning that the shop looks really clean, not something we can say about all takeaways.

Hands down, the best fish and chips in the area - we drive from Bourne End, past others, to get there. Fish is delicious, service is fast and friendly, the place is spotless. They always have amazing specials on, their coleslaw is the best I have ever had ... I could go on ...I"ve never been at lunchtime as I work too far away but my husband used to go and I bellieve they do a wide range of fresh, fabulous rolls and salads then. They also have lovely tempting cakes and cookies on the counter.All round, a top place to go!

I really like The Old Town Friar, I go there to get my lunch most days, they do sandwiches, baguettes, salads, toasted sandwiches, jacket potatoes and the usual fish and chip shop food. Really friendly staff and the food is always really nice. Oh and they do the best chips I have ever tasted!!!!
