The Old Plough Inn in Newark and Sherwood

My first visit to the Old Plough Inn and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The home cooked food was fantastic and all the staff and owners were so friendly and attentive, couldn’t fault any of it. The atmosphere was lovely and it’s such a beautiful pub. Highly recommend and will definitely be going back!

My husband and I visited the Old Plough Inn at the weekend and what a beautiful place it is! From the minute we walked in the staff could not have been more helpful and attentive. Were were not kept waiting to be seated and our drinks were bought as soon as ordered so we could have a drink whilst perusing the menu!! The food was absolutely delicious; you could tell it was freshly home cooked and the family atmosphere was lovely! We would not hesitate in going back and will definitely be returning very soon! Thank you so much :)

Bit disappointed in our meal at The Plough last night Highlights: Cod prawn and salmon mornay was tasty; lamb and turkey were good and sticky toffee pudding also nothing to complain about. Low points: starters were small and quite pricey; food was slow to come out even though they weren’t that busy, and servers were constantly at the table interrupting conversations to ask if we wanted more drinks, clear glasses, check everything was ok; apples undercooked and bitter in the crumble and the crème brûlée was the worst I’ve ever tasted ( strange orange colour, odd texture , little flavour and far too sweet)

We visited last night for a meal on our mini break to the area. I have to say I WILL most definitely be returning! We had the most perfect experience here, the food was really very good and plentiful, the staff very attentive, nothing was too much trouble at all. I would highly recommend the Steak and Guinness pie from the menu... Very nice. It's been a while since we have had a meal out as good as this was, 5 stars but would happily give more if there was an option Thank you to all staff at the Old Plough Inn, Egmonton.

Arrived for pre arranged booking, with no where to wait, asked to wait outside. 45 minutes later( after several reminders we were there) on a sunny but cold afternoon invited to a table . Food served after another 45 minutes from a then limited menu.

We came here for the first time as a family party of 7 for an evening meal to celebrate my wife’s recent birthday. Atmosphere and decor is cosy but classy. Staff were welcoming and attentive. Service was quick. Good choice of real ales and other drinks. Menu has just the right amount of choice and range of dishes in my opinion - something for everyone! We all had starters, mains and puddings and we all agreed that the food was outstandingly good. I had one of the best sirloin steaks ever, with a fantastic Stilton sauce. The presentation of the dishes was also to a high standard. We will definitely be returning and I highly recommend it. Thanks for a lovely evening!

Me and my partner came for his birthday tonight, wow is all I can say! The decor is lush, the staff were lovely, always checking everything was OK. The calamari was so nice, we both opted for pie and this was so filling. Along came our deserts - choc brownie and ice cream, and sticky toffee pudding, these were amazing! There's a huge gin menu too, I cant understand the negative review, its clear that they are typical moaners as there's not one nice thing to say in their review. Try this place for yourself, you won't regret it :)

Nice setting. Went for Sunday lunch to celebrate mum's birthday. Positives - waiting staff are young adults and very polite and attentive. Nice wine glasses and nice wine served at the correct temperature .Negatives - food is bland. Tables are too small. We were crammed in a table for 6 people with 4 adults and 2 older children.

Warm welcome, extraordinary food, amazing hosts! From the minute we stepped into this tastefully decorated old inn we knew we had made the right choice. Outstanding menu and food. A birthday celebration for the three of us was made extra special by a genuinely attentive team of staff and family owners. The venue was perfect, cosy without being too close to other diners, and comfortable furnishing and impeccable loos. We had travelled some distance so were glad to be able to book ahead and received a lovely welcome despite arriving earlier than our booking. We will definitely be back and highly recommend this lovely family-run venue.

Warmly welcomed, sat down in a lovely warm cosy room. The staff are exceptionally efficient and nothing is any trouble. The food choice was plenty and was well presented, even an extra jug of gravy and cauliflower cheese to add to the already well portioned meals. This is a great place to eat as a couple or with family and friends. Booking is recommended as It was full, however the service never falted even though busy. The manger is lovely and the staff clearly enjoy working for her. Will definitely be returning soon. Thanks for looking after us. delicious

We visited in the afternoon with our neighbours, the decor was clean, there were some nice little antiques around which added to the conversation, the staff were very pleasant, & most importantly the food was delicious, we have over the years, found some very nice eateries, and this was worthy of a return visit.

We met friends here for meal and drinks. Good varied menu with vegetarian options we had starters of pigeon breast, garlic mushrooms, baked Camembert and soup. Followed by Duck, chicken stuffed with chorizo and a mushroom and brie Wellington. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. The owner and staff were very accommodating as we needed wheelchair access and overall we had a very pleasant evening. Planning to return again soon.

This is four years in a row we have visited this restaurant. We stay near Sherwood Forest and always have a meal here (we travel from Essex). The food is fantastic, the service is genuine I fully recommend this to anyone staying in the area. If you are really brave, order the sea platter for 2, must pre order , but what a banquet and you will not be disappointed. The regular menu is more than adequate though and we always leave with a full belly, can't praise this place enough.

Very expensive for the meals we had. Only Approx 4 prawns in starter and chips were luke warm with main. Mentioned chips to staff and got no apology. Will not go again. This was the second time we have had a meal there and can say we weren't happy with either time. Once again far too expensive for the quality of food.

We have been visiting the plough for years. Me and my husband love the food. I always have the steak and my husband has the lamb and we have the cod bites to start. Always amazing food, great flavour everything cooked brilliantly.

Been to the Old Plough Inn several times and have always enjoyed the food, unfortunately this last visit was poor for me. My husband has the veggie tomato curry, which he nearly always has , l had the cheese and onion quiche served with new potatoes and veg, the quiche was tasteless, the new potatoes were ordinary ones chopped up, none of the three veg had been seasoned. The TV chefs are always going on to season well. I ate half of mine as l had not eaten since lunchtime, that meal took vegetarian food back 20 years. My husband incidentally enjoyed his curry, wish I had ordered it .

Four friends travelled from Lincoln for birthday meal. The decor of the pub is lovely and fresh and tables are not to crammed in together so you don’t feel on top of each other. The food was fantastic, very tasty and well presented and ample portions. There was a good choice for the one vegetarian in the group. The choice of beers and wines was great. But what made a lovely evening even better was the exceptional and very attentive service we received from the young staff serving at the bar and waiting at table. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they engaged in conversation and all seemed to enjoy their work and take pride in their role at The Old Plough. Well done to the whole team. I do not review on Trip Advisor very often and when I do, it’s because somewhere has really impressed me. I think too many people use it to moan and not enough to share good feedback. I went with a friend for lunch here and absolutely loved it. From decor to atmosphere, service to food quality - everything was spot on! Will definitely go back again - we’ll done to all involved in the running of this fab establishment!

We have driven by here many times and decided to stop in one late afternoon. When we walked in, we noted there was no bar area, just tables set for food everywhere. Some people were sitting at tables near the bar drinking. We were asked if we wanted a meal, and were shown to a table. The menu had a vegetarian dishes, but no vegan ones, which I try to stick to if I can. I see on their tripadvisor page that they are available. I don’t believe in asking for a special dish, if they are available, put it on the menu! Better yet, get rid of the vegetarian dishes and just make everything vegan. All supermarkets have vegan cheese, cream and other things. Very simple really.

My Husband and I looked on line and saw the Seafood Platter for 2. You have to book a week in advance to enable the Chef to get the best fish but it really is an absolute treat. It is 3 tiers high and had every sort of magnificent delight you could possibly think of. You need to have a good appetite and make sure you arrive hungry it is huge but absolutely stunning and flavoursome. If you love seafood as we do, then just book it, I promise you will be amazed!!

We live 10 minutes away, so this place is pretty much on our doorstep. Having heard a number of recent good reviews about the Plough, we decided to give it a try tonight to celebrate our belated Valentine's day.

Myself and hubby visited tonight.. Was amazing from homemade pate starter to the fillet and rib eye steaks .. Cooked to perfection! Compliments to the chef.. Lovely to see small team working together very friendly.. Will definitely return. 😁

Have been down to the plough today and had a lovely meal. The landlord and lady had arranged for our favourite seafood to be delivered and offered to us as a course this evening even though it was not on the main menu (they knew it was my birthday).

I am not a negative review kind of girl, would rather not leave a review at all. My husband absolutely loved his main of lamb, I think I simply made the wrong choice - my fish was cooked lovely but everything that went with it I found a bit bland. It also took nearly 50 mins to arrive. But I'm guessing Something went wrong in the kitchen with our order because other people were served in a timely manner. The reason I'm giving it five stars is because it is such a beautiful little pub, they are trying very hard and the lemon cheesecake I had to finish was to die for. I also think it's important to support places that have real chefs doing real food. So we will definitely be returning at some point to try something else.

Had a meal there recently with my partner's parent. The pub decor is excellent, the beer is extremely with a nice choice of ales. The menu provides a good mix of steaks and pub classics. This is good food very well cooked. I can definitely recommend their sticky toffee pudding.

We have visited The Plough numerous times as we live locally. Our last visit was disappointing. Although the pub was busy the service was very slow. The seafood cocktails and mushroom starters were delicious. The whale sized fish and chips lived up to its name. However the fish pie was a massive let down. There was a very deep layer of cheese topped mashed potato with a couple of scallops under the cheese. The filling was quite short on fish and the sauce had a wall paper paste stodginess, far too thick and gloopy to be enjoyed. In the end I picked out the fish and left the rest. The whole balance of the dish was wrong, far too much potato and sauce and not enough fish, and it was a very expensive mistake at £17. Sadly we will not be going back.

Was told about The Old Plough at Egmanto,n by a couple who said they like good quality traditional food , We spoke to a young lady named Millie , friendly &very; polite , we booked a table , when we arrived , we was seated & served by Millie , this young lady was amazing , smart , on the ball looking after every customer that was in the restaurant ,the pub as a nice atmosphere , super decor , very clean , proper cotton napkins , & excellent food we had the chicken & the gammon , a good selection on the menu , good value , the portions are of good size &served; hot, presentation spot on ,,, the lemon mousse cheesecake is delicious ! But there is many to choose ,, we will be back & thankyou to Millie ,what a little star ,,,,

I went there for a meal with my husband last Saturday night. Having lived in Tuxford for a few years, we were surprised not to have visited previously but I am so glad we have now! I can honestly say that the fillet steak was the best that I have ever tasted. My husband had the ribeye which was enormous and very well cooked. The service throughout was excellent- they were having problems with the internet and card connections following a power cut and were so apologetic, but always polite. We will definitely be returning!

A huge selection to choose from but went for the slow cooked silverside of beef roast dinner. Beef melted in the mouth and Yorkshire pudding delicious. Service staff very attentive.

We have been several times and always had a good feeling about the service and the food at a reasonable price.

We booked a table to be sure we could get a seat with it being a friday teatime and it was my birthday. Good job we did! it was only 6.30p.m and most of the tables were taken. When ordering my curry I was surprised to be asked 'how hot do you like it?', that was a first! Obviously they put the customer first, want them to enjoy their meal and we all have different taste.The food was very good quality and well presented, prices were average.The staff were obviously very well trained, were very pleasant and helpful. We couldn't fault anything about our visit, I would highly recommend giving them a try!

Had a lovely lunch with my sister and sister in law this week. The Plough is a beautiful pub with lovely flower displays outside. Inside the dining area is very impressive and has a cosy feel, service was efficient and the menu was so good we were spoilt for choice. The food was exquisite!!!

My wife and I called in with our 6 year daughter for lunch half way through a circular walk from Laxton. Really friendly service and top class food. Definitely planning to return!

My Husband and I came here for Sunday lunch to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We have been here a number of times as we like it so much.The dinner was lovely, as always, and we particularly like the homemade meat stuffing. The Staff are always attentive and welcoming. We can honestly say this is the best Sunday roast lunch for miles.

Lovely roast beef and the trimmings, my husband had the lamb, again lovely. Beautiful sunny day and a great lunch to go with it. (Wish I had room for desert - they sounded amazing). Love what they have done with the front seating area - so pretty.

Been to the Old Plough a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the meal. Friends booked us in for my husbands birthday and it didn't disappoint. Very cosy and pleasant surroundings, decorated to a high standard. Good choice on the menu and we all enjoyed our food.

Another fabulous lunch at the Old Plough. As on previous visits the food was excellent, a very good choice on the menu, appealing to all tastes. One of our party asked if she could have something not on the menu and the chef went the extra mile to accommodate her request, which was really appreciated. The staff are so welcoming and pleasant you feel as though you're being treated as a friend rather than just another customer. Can't praise highly enough! We will certainly return, just wish we lived a little bit nearer!!

Visited 14 th April for what had hoped would be a lovley birthday meal. As is usually a excellent experience but unfortunately was terrible, ordered bread too start which tasty but extremely hard so a visit too the dentist too place a filling is now in order. one of us had fish bites and fish and chips waited over half a hour for main meals despite being quiet. Another table had arrived so waited a while too be table checked as only one member of staff on and don’t want too take the meal too the bar hence eating part of the meal the fish was wet and soggy so on checking mentioned that it was which was offered too be changed so I asked too have cod bites instead as they were better and had tried one. So sent the whole meal back COD bites came out and a portion of chips and were a lot better but on paying them bill it was mentioned that the fish had been left on the bill? Not that it was a bout the price difference but queried and was told quite rudely that I had eaten some of the chips so I had too pay for the chips. For reasons as above very bad service I was sat without a meal and had eaten some of the meal on waiting too be table checked in the first place and also I had eaten some chips not knowing that the fish was going too be sent back. !

This meal was booked one week before for eleven at 8pm didn't get starters until 9pm and main

Visited with friends on a midweek lunchtime. Good sized car park, lovely rural village. Place looks on the small size but when you investigate the inside it can seat 70!

Lovely atmosphere. Large menu, something to suit all tastes. Big specials board, Lots of unusual choises. The Chefs Seafood Platter was amazing Highly recommended.

Last minute decision to celebrate my husband's birthday by having lunch out. Where to go? We were very lucky to choose The Old Plough Inn at Egmanton. Delightful surroundings, attentive hostess and the food. Did I mention the food! We had beautifully tasting food for our main courses, melt in the mouth lamb rump and fillet steak. Too full to have a dessert but we promised to be back to sample the sticky toffee pudding. Thank you from us both.

Visited the restaurant at lunchtime on the Saturday before mother’s day for a meal with my Mum. We did pre-book, and our table was ready when we arrived. The menu choice was very good, and we went for the seafood selection, soup and bread and oils for starters. All were very good, especially the seafood. For mains we had the steak and ale pie, the salmon and fish and chips. The steak and ale pie was one of the best I have had- a thick pastry top over a dish packed full with steak and gravy, served with chips and peas. The salmon fillet was a good size and enjoyed by my wife. Mum had the fish and chips, and even though she only ordered the standard size fish (there is also a choice of whale size), it was enormous and thoroughly enjoyed! The chips were made fresh from real potatoes as opposed to deep fried oven chips, which was a pleasant surprise too. After starters and main courses, none of us had room for dessert!

Came here for Mother’s Day Lunch. Food was excellent, staff very friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Cosy and nice and warm too. Very busy but food was served within 15 minutes which was fab. Food lovely & hot. Overall 10/10. Would definitely recommend!

All I can say, seriously beautiful food made by someone who cares... Lovely relaxed service too. So nice what the owners have done, attention to detail with everything, place was immaculate. A must visit if near the area. 10/10.

Egmanton is just a few minutes off the A1 and well worth the short detour. There is a car park behind the pub and a very welcoming central bar area -light and airy but warm with a word burning stove which was most welcome the cold day we arrived. There are 2 restaurant rooms with enough privacy to be cosy. Ive never seen so many dried hops in one place - they festoon all the beams but add a softness.

We called in for lunch with elderly parents, lady there was very helpful, food was very good and we throughly enjoyed the food. I think this is worth a visit. The menu is varied with a good selection. Lovely surroundings. Excellent.

A friend insisted on taking us and 2 others back to the old plough for a meal. 3 omnivores and us 2 vegans. We were a little unsure as last time the vegan offering was not very good. With that in mind we spoke with Lisa and John the owners to see what they would offer this time. After the ‘tell us what you’d like and we’ll try to do it for you’ part of the chat (never a good thing to say to old vegans unless you know your seitan from your aqua faba, and your tempeh from your tofu), it turned out that the butter pastry and eggy nut roast could be done for us without butter and egg after all (who’d have believed it?!) so we had a very tasty nut roast Wellington with Sunday veg followed by the wonderfully rich chocolate pot. Absolutely delicious and we were full for the rest of the day. So, fellow vegans, talk in advance to the owners and request the veganised Wellington. A special mention for the serving staff who were all attentive and made mention of the vegan nature (or otherwise) of everything brought to the table. Hope to return soon.
