The Old Bakery Restaurant in Lincoln

We had heard good reviews of the restaurant for a number of years, and love the ‘not for profit’ concept, so we booked a Saturday evening table for two. The restaurant was about a third full, but had a nice atmosphere. Food: Overall, the food was average, with a few good dishes throughout the meal. Starter and desserts were missing key flavours / textures to make them really stand out. Though duck main was very good, and is recommended. For the price and expectation, it did not hit the spot. Service: This was hit and miss. Wine was just placed on the table and not poured, unused cutlery and used side plates and butter knives from bread were still on the table at dessert. Service felt rushed, and we had three courses well under one hour. The experience just did not match the price tag.

Incredible restaurant. Walking distance of the Cathedral Quarter, not for profit, owned by Lincoln Catering college. Wonder4ful conservatory, plenty of room around the tables, comfortable chairs, small menu, but I could have easily had three of the choices for each course. Excellent aperitive/cocktails, good wine list, I had the Washington Red "Charles and Charles" - superb. I ate oxtail confit for my starter, Jacobs Ladder (beef short rib) for my main, and Date and whisky pudding. 5 out of 5 for everything, and the ladies serving were absolutely incredible. My three companions, has other choices and all raved about the food

It was a pleasure to return to The Old Bakery. Although it is under new management, the quality of the food was excellent. the slow -cooked beef was exceptional as was the deconstructed crumble for dessert. Interesting and good wine list. Still the best place to eat in Lincoln.

Empty restaurent on a Saturday night. The Bronze pig, just up the road, was full as we walked passed it but The Old Bakery only had 2 customers at 7.30 on a Saturday night. No atmosphere. Nice staff but they took such a long time to take our order. One of the breads was so salty our friend could not eat it. The other bread was very under salted. My starter of pate was served on a thin biscuit. There is a reason why pate is usually served with bread or toast, it just goes together. A thin biscuit is not enough to counteract the rich and in this case, salty pate. Mains were served. My friend has asked the waitress to tell the chef not to salt her fish. How I wish I had followed suit! My badly cooked lamb ( it had not been seared and was just grey meat) was so salty I found it inedible and I sent it back to the kitchen. A few moments later the waitress returned to our table with the same plate of food ! The chef had told her to inform me that the salt could not be removed and that is was a special mix which could not be adjusted. It was what it was!! What rubbish I am an ex chef and have always used separate salt and pepper it does not come premixed or portioned. The chef has completely control on how much is added and the chef at the Old bakery over salts food. The other fish dish was also over salted. My husband lamb was not quite as salty as mine but it was still salty. Having sent my food back to the kitchen for the second time I was not offered an alternative and went home hungry to peanut butter on toast. Did the chef really think I would accept his over salted food when it came back to our table the second time, such odd behaviour. While this was all going on I noticed a single diner being taken to a seat. She was there for some while but was not served anything. She then abruptly got up and flounced out of the restaurent, announcing to the (few) other diners that ‘ I hope you are having a better evening than me’ . Well, if she is reading this she will know that these 4 guests also had a bad evening.

we went here for our anniversary last night. it was completely atmosphere less. only 3 couples in all night on a Friday night ( i can remember in years gone by you used to have to book min 3 months in advance ). we ordered lamb which we were never asked how we would like it cooked. it came rare and was tough. the service was good (albeit you would expect it to be with only 6 people in there ) we stayed overnight. the room was very basic, black mould in the shower. was on the main road so very noisy. no breakfast offered but we did have a good one at stokes just behind the old bakery at the Lawns. would i go to the old bakery again? no not any time soon. it has lost its atmosphere and excellent food quality that it had in years gone by

We came last night and had a wonderful evening. A party of 11 from 4years old to 80, great service, staff were lovely and food delicious. Great space too. Many thanks to the staff for making it a special evening.

First visit since the University took over this restaurant. What a first class experience it was. Congratulations to the trainee chefs you will go far. Table service staff were excellent, polite, fun and knowledgeable. Chicken liver parfait was fantastic, Roast beef main was the best roast I’ve had in a long while. Superb flavours and perfectly cooked beef. Sublime. Squeezed in a dessert despite being fit to burst. Perfection 😊

Excellent meal at the Old Bakery last night. First time I have been since it was taken over by the college and I think they are doing a great job. Wonderful food, good wine list and friendly service. Will be back again.

Our first visit to this wonderful restaurant. Sunday lunch with the family. What a fantastic repast we had. The service was excellent with very polite and friendly staff. Our lunch was so tasty. We were served with a bread taster which was amazing. One starter was ordered which was the cured mackerel - loved by all who tried it. Then came the mains....Mum and I had the lamb which was cooked to perfection with a wonderful selection of vegetables and a Yorkshire pud to die for. My son and his partner had the beef - again a wonderful tasty meal. My other son had the salmon which was fantastic. To finish off the desserts were ordered there were 3 had the Pistachio and olive cake - oh my!! it was fabulous. A Dark Chocolate Pave was ordered by my son - it was delicious. We had a wonderful time and would like to thank the Chefs, for their hard work on a hot day, who prepared us a wonderful Sunday lunch experience. Will definitely be going again. Well done to all concerned.

Excellent service, with very polite and helpful staff. The chicken liver parfait was lovely and smooth with extremely tasty blue cheese on a tasty gingerbread sable. The beef was excellently tender with a light horseradish sauce within the Roscoff onion. Always a delight going there and advised a couple at looking at the menu to book a table.

Sunday lunch, we were served by James who was excellent. He went to lengths to make sure that everyone was comfortable. He could see that my good lady was struggling with the temperature and moved us to a cooler room that was perfect. The food was amazing, a chicken liver parfait was full of flavor. The roast beef was melt in the mouth and packed full of interesting tastes and we all finished with a beautiful egg custard tarts. Highly recommended, the whole team from welcoming on arrival, creating beautiful food to saying goodbye, we will definitely be back.

The service and the food were faultless. Everything was cooked to perfection. The parfait for starter, beautifully presented and tasted divine. The lamb was so tender served with such a delicious gravy and the custard tart was out of this world. Great wine selection. Thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely be back.

Visited the Old Bakery on a Saturday lunch. Excellent service and decent quality starters and desserts. For main I ordered Pork Loin which unfortunately came as Belly Pork which was pretty much a slab of fat in a nice sauce. It was disappointing not just in how terrible it was but in that the restaurant had tried to deceive and failed. I was refunded two soft drinks as compensation and ate alone as the rest of the party had finished having changed dish. Please also be aware it’s fiercely hot in the conservatory on a summers day and there were no blinds.

We had been regulars when Ivano and his wife were in charge and cooking. The college has taken over and since Ivano has returned to Italy it is used as a training restaurant for catering students. We came last Christmas and were desperately disappointed at the quality of the cooking and at £90 each was definitely not value for money. However, we thought we would give them time to get used to training under a chef and working under pressure. We thought Sunday lunch would be a test of cooking skills. The service was welcoming and we were seated in the conservatory. The room was unbearably hot the blinds had been removed and the sun's heat was amplified by the immense amount of glass. The menu is limited but it shouldn't be a problem if beautifully cooked. Of the 3 starters on offer 2 contained beetroot, which is fine if you like beetroot but lacked imagination the third was ham terrine with piccalilli which was quite nice. I chose the leg of lamb for my main meal Andy husband pork loin. The lamb came in a thick slab and was overcooked. Lamb should be cut thinly and pink inside, it was so difficult to cut we had to ask for a steak knife. The roast potatoes were not freshly cooked and tasted as if they were cooked the night before and warmed up. The vegetables were under cooked. My husbands pork was fine but not enough of it. The same complaint was for the potatoes. Dessert was cheese board and biscuits, Ivano made his own chutney. I had lemon posset with meringue and raspberries and a biscuit which tasted stale,the meringue was hard but the posset really quite good. Altogether not a good meal,if these students want to get on in the cut throat world of catering, they really must try harder.

I have wanted to visit this restaurant for years and finally got to go. It wasn’t as special as I thought it would be. The restaurant itself is nice and there is a nice atmosphere with good music. We waited quite a while for drinks but the food was quick to come. Our waiter was young and not very confident, perhaps he is new as he seemed a bit nervous but he was pleasant enough. My starter was amazing I chose the aubergine beignets and it was unlike anything i have had before, the flavours were amazing. For main I had chestnut gnocchi to try something different but it was far too creamy and lacked seasoning. My partner had the duck breast starter with bbq marshmallow which was really interesting and fun, for main he had the beef which was nice but a bit over cooked. I would go back to see what interesting flavour combinations they try next, but it was a bit expensive for what it was.

Visited Friday evening with my daughter. Had prebooked the Tasting menu. Without exception everything that passed our lips was a delight and we will be returning. It is obvious that the dishes are created and served with such care and passion. Flavours compliment each other and the overall experience is one of unadulterated pleasure. The restaurant offers a wine matching service but we didn't opt for this.

very expensive for this level of cooking - meat was way too salty - wine not poured from bottle at the table —and served much too quickly - service was ok but ill informed - bread and butter covers was poor and cheaply seasoned - 111 pounds for a glass of wine each and two mains - sadly lacking in the quality which we expected

Visited a couple of years ago when the food was first class. What has gone wrong.. steak too rare, dry Turkey escolapes, poorly cooked veg, tasteless gravy (or should that be jus), only just warm soup, unrecognisable bread butter pud. Ludicrously high prices for mediocre food. Living off former reputation?

Booked a table for Lunch before visiting family in Lincoln. We both chose 2 courses from the a la cate menu but from walking in the door to leaving was a super fast 45 minutes(surprised they allowed us to take our coats off). Also we ordered a glass of Malbec each (£15) but bizarrely the nice glasses on the table were removed and the wine was brought in those naff tulip glasses. Respectfully suggest a discrete message is added to the wine list. “NICE WINE GLASSES WITH EVERY FULL BOTTLE ORDERED.Eagerly anticipated meal but left mildly disappointed. Shame.

Again another really lovely family a la Carte meal Saturday lunch. 6 of us in total and we can all say that every mouthful was exceptional, nothing to complain about from walking in to going home .Warm welcoming staff, relaxing quaint setting, and a lovely wine to boot.Thank you

We stayed and had the special offer of 5 course tasting menu and bed and breakfast. The room was lovely only little but so well put together and had lovely touches such as a cookie on arrival. Water in the rooms, tea and coffee, toiletries. Also an area as you go in with extra tea, coffee milk etc as well as a iron, which we used during our stay. The breakfast was gorgeous and the team were really friendly. The tasting menu was nice and again the staff were really friendly and welcoming. Overall you cannot fault this place and the deal, we had a great time

We had the taster menu with the wine flights and they didn’t disappoint. We had a great experience and Tracy explained in great details about the wines, which were absolutely superb and all were thoroughly enjoyable. The wine flight is highly recommended

Visited to try the Taster Menu on 27.12.19. and we both thought the whole experience was great. Superb food, delicious wines and excellent service from knowledgeable staff in a lovely calm, friendly atmosphere. Not in the least pretentious and very reasonably priced too. Cannot wait to come back.

We had a great evening at the Old Bakery. Its a lovely restaurant. We were in the conservatory at the back which was great. The food was great, the staff were fabulous and the wines were best of all - amazing. Some out of the ordinary wines which worked amazingly with the food. The staff member who described the wines was excellent - so knowledgeable and interesting. Her explanations really brought the wines to life. I can honestly say they were best wine accompaniments I have ever had.

My wife had been give a Groupon voucher as a gift, so we visited the restaurant for a three course lunch, which was from their al a carte menu. They were helpful at advising my wife concerning gluten-free options on their menu.

After visiting this restaurant on a previous occasion in the summer we had a negative experience, I can only say this visit was the complete opposite!

This was our second visit to the Old Bakery making use of the excellent value for money deal of the five course taster menu, overnight stay and breakfast.

Went to The Old Bakery with friends for Saturday lunch. Were met and seated promptly. Staff friendly and attentive. Reasonable choice of starters and mains, plus wines.

Difficult to find something without making a reservation a few days upfront. Luckily they had still a table available. Nice to have dinner. Limited choice but enough for every body.

We visited as a group of 6 yesterday evening. They catered for my gluten free request and brought a large jug of tap water to the table and the wines selected were fine. So far so good. The rest of the evening however was such a disappointment The majority of the dishes on the tasting menu were either bland or extremely salty. My understanding of a tasting menu is that it gives the chef an oppurtunity to showcase their expertise, hence being bemused as the dishes served appeared to be an experiment in how much lack of skill and effort can be made whilst charging a not inconsiderable fee.

Myself and my wife stayed here, the staff were very welcoming and helpful and the room was well presented. In the evening we had a 3 course meal which was fantastic. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Had a super meal here last night. Went for the taster menu, service was great with staff very attentive, atmosphere perfect! Not the cheapest but worth every penny! Would highly recommend for those special evenings! X
