We have been frequent visitors over the years, and have been able to alway extol it’s virtues, the quality and standards of the food here. This trip was one down memory lane as we had been there 30 years earlier as it was our wedding anniversary. However sadly after a visit for afternoon tea the illusion of what the Mead was has gone. Afternoon tea has boomed in the region over the last few years, but it seems to have passed the Mead by. Having booked in advance we were signaled towards the front room to find a table, none available. We came back to reception and told to look in the Bar... the same story. So the receptionist ushered us to a table in the empty dining room. Oh well we thought, at least it will be peaceful. The tea was served, well In comparison with other eateries locally it was a drab and lackluster presentation. It’s very doubtful that we will ever return

Went for birthday dinner, lovely choices on a set menu. Each dish was tasty and without fault. More expensive than normal but worth it for the quality. We all enjoyed it, staff were friendly and efficient. A lot of thought had gone into the food. You do need to book as busy. Wedding going on but in a different area so didn't impact on the food or service.

Norfolk Mead is a well run boutiques style hotel with terrific and attentive staff, notably Josh and Alex, who went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our stay. They called to make sure we had a table booked at dinner, dealt with a room issue, reminded us of our spa appointment and generally were just cheery and helpful at all times of day. The dinner bombards the palate with lots of flavours and is of a high standard that you might not find in more expensive places. The breakfasts are scrummy and generous in selection. We had an excellent facial that came with head neck and shoulder massage and totally chilled for the hour.We would have given 5 stars but the minor room issue results in a deduction, although the drinks were complimentary as a result which was a pleasant surprise and I hope they quickly can sort it out.

Lovely hotel, the staff were exceptionally kind and helpful and a key part in making the stay so enjoyable. We brought our little dog and stayed in Juniper, the room was a little smaller and simpler than we had hoped. The staff showed us around a few other rooms, in fact the other rooms that allow dogs are much more spacious. The best rooms are those in the house where dogs are not allowedWe will definitely come back but next time sadly, without the dog.It is a lovely small hotel with a beautiful walled garden, great food and outstanding staff.

A roast lunch is just a roast lunch, WRONG ! there are a lot of little things which make for an excellent lunch and this place has a lot of those little things in abundance. The place itself has a very homely feel about it, just the sort of place you would want to own if you won the lottery, the menu is a delight to look through because there will be something there that you haven't had before and all this is topped off by just about the right attention to detail by the dedicated staff.

We came here on very short notice (24 hours exactly) for an afternoon tea for 9 of us. My family are very difficult to cater for and we were unsure about what we could be offered (we had vegans, vegetarians and a gluten and dairy free!!!) I’ve never been somewhere where diateries were so well catered for, everything prepared fresh for us that day, and so much of it as well!! The best afternoon tea we have ever had in Norfolk, the hotel itself is stunning and the staff are so friendly and helpful with anything you need (special thanks to Liam and Victoria) nothing is too much trouble. Thank you so much Norfolk mead as this came at a time when our family truly deserved some TLC, a memory to be remembered.

We were expecting a fantastic dining experience, having been impressed with previous visits. Sadly this time it did not live up to our expectations, it was more akin to a budget restaurant! But the price certainly was high end! Also one glass of pinot grigio cost £8.50! As this was Boxing day we were expecting a more luxurious, festive experience instead it was no different to a normal Sunday lunch apart from the cracker! I do not mind paying good money for good food but sadly left feeling ripped off and very disappointed.

This was meant as a celebration and a thank you tea. We arrived at 3 but could not sit in the lounge as the fire had been lit, the room had filled with smoke and the windows were open. We sat in the bar area - at a low table that was not ideal for afternoon tea. We were given a menu of teas but waited a long time (over 20 minutes) to be served (having already booked the afternoon tea itself). We also had to go and find somebody to organise refills etc. The tea itself was fine - finger sandwiches, fresh scones and a selection of cakes - although there was nothing outstanding and the only nod to Christmas was a mini mince pie. The mood was not improved when somebody started drilling and sawing directly overhead - repairs are repairs but surely the hotel could plan not to serve afternoon tea where they know they are taking place. The upshot is that this is one of those "1 star for ambience, 4 stars for food and drink" reviews with the benefit of the doubt as I know they can do better. At £55 for three, I think the Mead needs to try a lot harder than this if it wants repeat custom.

We opted for three courses and shared a bit of each other’s dishes, for the quality of food the price was good. The smoked pheasant was delicious, and the elderflower jelly with dessert was really good. The plates were large with good portions, and all the veggies were treated with real care. The kale was actually one of my favourite bits. All the staff were very attentive and friendly. Despite being fine dining, it was a comfortable and warm atmosphere. Beautiful ingredients put together to compliment and blend, overall a superb meal. My only faults would be that the skin on the cod dish was not crispy and so I had to dismantle my wonderfully arranged plate to take it off, and also I thought the extra money for the scallops was a 'tad' excessive, but seriously none of this would put me off ordering the same things again, it is only an observation.

We stayed two nights in the Hawthorn room and had dinner both evenings plus one lunch. I also visited the treatment rooms. The room was lovely with a very large comfortable bed, and a sitting area with a sort of open plan bathroom - large shower with overhead and hand held options and a wash basin in the same space (also a door to a separate toilet). Big fluffy towels, robes, slippers and lovely shower gel etc made it very comfortable and welcoming. French doors lead on to a terrace with chairs and a table that looks over the walled garden. A cafetière and fresh coffee are provided, with little bottles of fresh milk available from a fridge in the corridor. All lovely touches which would have been even more perfect with more than sachet of coffee, or an alternative supply of the instant variety for those of us with high caffeine demands. All the food we had was very good and beautifully presented with some great wines to chose from. Breakfasts had a lovely buffet which concentrated on quality rather than excessive choice. The cooked breakfasts are clearly made to order and both the herby mushrooms with poached egg and the kipper were delicious. Lunch time sandwiches in the walled garden were perfect for a light bite before embarking on dinner. Canapés were offered in the garden before going through to the dining room for dinner, which was another delicious meal.Staff throughout our stay were all lovely without exception. They were friendly, helpful and efficient and really gave the impression they enjoyed working at the hotel. I also had a facial and pedicure. The treatment rooms are beautiful and the whole experience was one of relaxation and pampering. The grounds of the hotel go down to the river Bure and contain a small lake, which made a nice place to stroll in the early evening. All in all, one of the best all round experiences of relaxed luxury we've had - would thoroughly recommend it.

Three of us chose the chicken roast and my husband chose the pork. The meal was very nice but perhaps my expectations were high because of the reviews on trip adviser. The restaurant is quite small only about 10 or 11 tables.I would recommend this Hotel for a meal but it is rather expensive for what you get.A tip would be to buy some of the lovely soap which is from their spa - very nice - and its in the ladies so you can try before you buy.

We had the choice of sitting in the lounge or the restaurant, we opted for the lounge as it was a more relaxed setting. The hotel was lovely, however the afternoon tea itself was disappointing. We were just offered a choice of tea or coffee, with no tea menu. The tea was not loose, which I expect as standard with an afternoon tea. The sandwiches were fine; salmon, egg and ham, again nothing different. There was one scone each which was plain with no fruit, and the jam was so watery we couldn't spread it. The cake selection was the best bit, a mini meringue, chocolate brownie and lemon drizzle. I have had afternoon tea in quite a few different places and would say this was average for £15pp. However the spa treatments were lovely, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The only problem was the rooms are quite close to the bar, which meant I could hear a child screaming throughout the massage. I brought it to the attention of the masseuse and she offered to close he door to the bar. Unfortunately this didn't help a great deal, but there was no more she could do. She helped as soon as I mentioned it.

I think around 140 people sat down for a meal in the new dining room, that is just set apart from the main building. The service was excellent, the tables of ten were served one after the other, the food was of a very high standard, everyone said it was one of the best club meals ever.Sadly some minor gripes, a combination of hard flooring, bare stone walls and low ceilings, whilst giving the building a very pleasing experience, meant the noise was really loud and many older members struggled to converse. Perhaps some softer furnishings/wall drapes might help. Also because of the number of people the car parking was poor with many struggling back to their cars in the dark after the meal. However for most readers travelling in smaller groups, the noise and car parking won't apply.I will have to go back in the daytime to view more, but by all accounts this is a very very good destination

My first trip to the Norfolk Mead and it won't be the last. Great setting, courteous and attentive staff, relaxed atmosphere and terrific food. All 3 courses were beautifully presented and totally delicious. Ingredients were fresh and tasty and expertly prepared. We were able to take our time and enjoy the meal without being rushed or made to feel like it was time to move on. The opportunity to combine a lovely meal or afternoon tea with a spa treatment is a treat we will definitely book in the future.

From the beginning of our stay to the end, we cannot praise the hotel and its staff enough - everyone was very attentive and the quality of the food was absolutely excellent - everything was cooked to perfection with style and grace, not to mention flavour! From canapés at the wedding reception, through to dinner and breakfast, the standard was superb (the full English breakfast was definitely to be recommended...... We could go on and on........) Presentation was elegant and a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds - highly recommended.

From Breakfast to Lunch to Evening meal, the food AND service in the restaurant was attentive and first class. I can honestly say that the Beef on the Friday evening was one of the finest and flavourful meals I've ever had.Everything that was put in front of me not only looked gorgeous but tasted amazing too!! Well done James and Anna and to the rest of your staff, you have succeeded in making The Norfolk Mead Restaurant a 'must go to' for any food connoisseur.

Six of us went for lunch today and even though the place was fully booked we received very good treatment from the off. We were ushered into a lounge for pre-lunch drinks as the bar was reportedly full. In no time we had our drinks orders taken and delivered (no real ale - what a bore!) and our lunch orders were taken soon after. With just about the right wait we were then ushered to our table and the starters were served - all delicious and well presented, followed by the main courses - equally mostly delicious and well presented EXCEPT that my wife, who was only having one course, had made the obvious mistake of ordering roast shoulder of pork. This arrived in the form of a large piece of fatty pork, looking like a left over from the carvery, plumped on top of a large pile of potatoes and veg - all luke warm to cold. We all commented on the unappealing and appetite-killing size and look of the dish whilst the waitress was serving us all but she feigned deafness and walked away. My wife then attempted to eat the dish in order not to create a fuss. Such a shame as the staff were mainly a delight and the service was impeccable. It is difficult to comprehend how such a rogue dish could have been included amongst what were very well cooked and presented offerings. The sweets were no better than OK and the wine, a New Zealand Pinot Noir, was pretty naff and went unfinished! As five of us were satisfied I am still giving this place a high rating but it could be improved.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Norfolk Mead Hotel. We found it on SecretEscapes with a superb special DB&B offer. Regardless of the discount we were enjoying, the service from all the staff, from our welcome at Reception through evening dinner and over breakfast was utterly superb. This is a very friendly and special country hotel with the best customer service we have experienced for a very long time. The food served at dinner and breakfast were of the very highest standard indeed and beautifully presented. If you are planning a visit to Norfolk do not miss this lovely place.

We booked for a Valentines breakfast thinking the Norfolk Mead would be a lovely place to start our day. We arrived at the hotel and had to search for a member of staff, we were then asked to wait as they were just cleaning the table but we're not asked to take a seat while they were doing so. We were offered tea or coffee, it arrived with no milk and we had to ask for the milk.We ordered our breakfast, we both went for the full English....however I wouldn't say it was very full. One sausage, two bits of bacon, an egg, a tomato and a mushroom and about a teaspoon of beans (which I found a hair in). We were told we could use the buffet and help our self to toast and juice etc, I was surprised that the full English didn't come with toast on the side. The toaster took around 5 minutes to get slightly golden and my breakfast was getting cold. I was also surprised to find that there was no butter available to have with the toast. We also found the atmosphere very strange, no music and left on our own so we couldn't even ask for butter. We then decided to leave and asked for the bill, the member of staff who served us even said "oh sorry I haven't been able to see you much this morning, it's been busy" I was surprised to see the bill....£30!!! for two "full English breakfasts" and a pot of coffee. No prices were available online or on the menu, understandably the hotel has a lot of clients come visit from London, but Coltishall is not London and definitely cannot charge those prices for a tiny meal. Even the couple behind us said "we'll this fry up isn't quite like what we have back home in London" For a 4* hotel I think the service and food was poor! considering premier inn even offer toast and butter with their fry up! We were told to come back for dinner and try the evening menu.....we have decided that won't be happening as we may have to take out a small mortgage to ensure we are full!! (And no I am not a large person who likes to eat, I am a 27year old 9st female) It is a great shame as we were looking forward to a nice morning meal in a nice setting, I have left feeling very annoyed that I have spent £30 on not much at all, unfortunately we won't be coming back.

We had an over night stopover at this hotel and it was amazing. Lovely quiet surroundings, beautiful room with all the facilities that you would need, food was excellent and I was even tempted to eat a full English breakfast, which I would not normally have. The food was too good to not eat it. Food was as good as Michelin starred restaurants that I have dined at. Not over-faced by quantity but quality is good and portions sufficient to leave you full at the end of the meal. Wine with our evening meal was very good value and very drinkable. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. A lovely romantic place to come and would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I were staying over night here and had the good fortune to sample the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast.Dinner was wonderful, wine was very good without breaking the bank. Staff were great. 1 minor criticism, there are too many tables crammed into the dining room, which means that everyone's conversation was overheard, so made the experience marginally uncomfortable. It's a minor point, as I do understand the necessity to maximise cover.Breakfast was really good too. We just had porridge and boiled eggs but the quality was of the highest standard

The service was fantastic but the food was mixed. I am vegetarian and struggle at the best of times with variety when eating out but at £30 for a set 3 course I expected more. My main was a medley of veg which when compared to my colleagues large steaks I failed to see where my money had been spent.

For two courses it is £25 and £30 pp. A little bit on the pricey side but the food is all local fresh ingredients which you can taste the difference! It is obvious that the chefs here take pride in their food and the presentation. Both mine and my partner's meals were cooked to perfection, right portion sizes and very tasty. The staff are very attentive (nothings too much trouble) but not over bearing. The table is presented nice with a pot of proper rock salt and there is balsamic vinegar for the freshly made rosemary and cheese bread (delicious!).Very enjoyable meal, thank you.

The restaurant staff were, without exception, very attentive and helpful. The food was first-class and it is an ideal venue to celebrate a special occasion. We would definitely return, particularly for a special occasion. Only two small niggles. The man who 'greeted' us on arrival could have been more friendly - we found him rather unwelcoming. There was also a bulb missing in one of the lamps in our room. Otherwise it was hard to fault.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Being an avid TripAdvisor user, I sought out the reviews of fellow contributors to locate a great restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary whilst in the Norfolk Broads area. I came across the reviews for the Norfolk Mead hotel and was greatly impressed by the comments left by previous guests. After a little perusal of the hotel website I made a dinner reservation for 12th November. The hotel is tucked away from the village down a narrow lane heading towards the river, unfortunately with this being November it was dark when we arrived so did not get to see much of the surroundings. However, what we could see promised to be a very wonderful setting, and the building itself looks magnificent. Having read a news article regarding the hotel previously I was aware that it had only been taken over a the start of 2013 but the new owners had immediately set to work with local workmen to update the building. The entrance leads into a modern looking yet informal reception area which a few chairs around for waiting guests. There is access from here into the lounge, bar and dining area.We were guided to the bar area at the rear of the building which again was very tastefully decorated and a comfortable area to wait and peruse the dining menu. The bar was well stocked and provided some variety, something sadly overlooked in many hotel's, I believe I counted at least 10 variants of Whiskey. The menu was a veritable feast of wonderful choices, I'm usually very quick to select my choice of courses but on this occasion it took much longer as there were so many items I would have liked to explore. With the whole emphasis on the hotel being the guest experience it was nice to see that all efforts were made to have everything ready prior to being lead to the dining area, this included leaving guests in comfort in the bar rather than left sitting for an extended period in the dining area. This hotel takes great store in providing quality food, so although you may have a slight wait for your meal it does mean that you will be having something very fresh and of the highest quality. The dining room is commensurate with the size of the hotel, it was very tastefully decorated and an enjoyable atmosphere in which to dine. It was very satisfying to see that many of the diners were not guests of the hotel and had actively sought out this location based on its reputation. So, the important part.....The food at Norfolk Mead is amazing, between our party of three we tried a number of differing starters, mains and desserts, and each and every one was well presented and caused the trotting out of the old cliche of looking to good to eat. Once you did take that step the taste of freshly prepared, local produce immediately became apparent. A succulent pigeon breast to begin with, followed by the most amazing beef wellington I have ever seen (this was so full of the best, perfectly cooked beef you can imagine, and defied the laws of physics with how much was contained within its pastry prison.) left me with a very satisfied feeling and questioning my ability to actually manage a dessert. Could I really miss out on the delights being offered ?My astonishing lack of will power clearly ensured that I would not !The dessert selections we a fitting end to this wonderful dining experience and I would have to say this would be one of the best dining experiences we have encountered and would recommend taking the time to seek out his little oasis of culinary pleasure.Comment has been made previously on the cost of dining at Norfolk Mead, I found it to be very comparable with other establishments I have visited offering this quality and have in fact paid more for a lower quality experience. Both the menu and wine list area within reasonable expectations. And a final word about the staff. What a credit to the hotel.Although being quite young and early in their careers in was extremely pleasant to see a group of people who understand what customer service is really about. They gave the impression of being fully committed to their role and took great pride in what they were seeking to achieve. From the second we entered the hotel it was clear that the ethos was to ensure we had the best experience that could be provided. The Norfolk Mead hotel is somewhere you should take note of, and if the opportunity ever arises for you to sample the dining experience then jump in with both feet. You will not be disappointed.

We visited here on a Saturday night for a 72nd birthday meal. Not knowing the area we relied on trip advisor reviews to select a restaurant for a special occasion. We were not disappointed.I called on the same day as the booking and they were able to fit us in for 8.30pm. On arrival they had our booking but for two people instead on three, they politely addressed the matter and said they would take us to the bar whilst they prepared our table. We sat in the snug part of the bar which was beautifully decorated. We had glasses of Prosecco which was very nice and given the menu.To start I had the pigeon which was delicious, followed by the duck which was equally very nice. I also tried the squid which was lovely and fresh and also the lamb main which was again fantastic. For dessert I had a trio of chocolates and my family had lemon tart and assiette of desserts which were again all faultless.Wine menu was extensive with a variety of wines. The cheapest was about £17.The staff were excellent, polite and friendly, which I think really made the personal experience. The dinner menu was £25 for two courses or £30 for three, which for the quality of the food, ambience, service and decor was exceptional value.I would really recommend this restaurant.
