Wow! What an amazing place with absolutely stunning food! I had a veggie Christmas dinner and it really was to die for - massive complements to the chef! The service is fantastic and the owners are lovely and friendly. I recommend the Nicholls Arms 100% and I’ll definitely be going back with the family again in the near future

Visit The Nick you will not be disappointed. This is a grade 2 listing building with a welcoming interior featuring wood panelling and exposed stone walls, local paintings, brass and photos of the village. There is a warming wood burner in the winter months. Seating consists of leather armchairs and sofa's which are really comfortable making you want to linger and enjoy your beer and the atmosphere. There is plenty of seating in the dining area at the rear again adorned with wood panelling. The Chef's home cooked food is superb. Sunday lunch is well worth a visit. The staff are friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. There is one changing real ale on offer usually Butty Bach which is so Moorish and kept in great condition by the owner. Also nice to see and taste is Penderyn Whisky which isn't widely available. This is a proper pub with friendly staff and friendly regulars.

Decided on the spur of the moment to go out for a meal for my birthday. With the Nicholls Arms local to us it was our first choice and we were certainly not disappointed. The owner could not have been more welcoming as we were shown to our pet friendly table in the bar area. It is usually me who experiences difficulty choosing from a menu and my husband who has difficulty eating what he has chosen but I found it hard to decide as there were many things which appealed while my husband (who can find chicken "tough") chose the gammon steak and I dreaded (for absolutely no reason as it turned out) it being dished up in front of him!!!!My fears were totally unfounded as my rib eye steak was cooked to perfection and truly did melt in the mouth as did my husband's succulent and tender gammon. The hand cut chips were perfect and hot and the accompaniments on both plates (tomato, mushrooms, herb butter & onions for me and fried egg and pineapple with the gammon were also perfection). We both had peas too (perhaps a few more than we needed) but that cannot be a complaint. We actually booked to return for a Mussel night there and then as we were so impressed.Neither of us could find a fault in any form but, if I were forced to suggest an enhancement to the menu, I would suggest small eater options to perhaps the rump steak, gammon steak, fish & chips at a slightly reduced price, as there is such a push these days to avoid waste. I emptied my plate with no problem at all but my husband did struggle with the size of his gammon (despite being perfectly cooked). Needless to say our greyhound though was more than happy with the doggy bag so no complaints from her!!!The drinks and coffee were reasonably priced and the service throughout excellent. Keep up the good work.

We called in by chance for a drink when we in the area, and thought it was a nice place. We saw others going in for meals and noticed they did meals all day, and as we had planned to eat out later, we returned for food later in the afternoon. It was very quiet as the weather had turned for the worst, and they had only recently started opening on Mondays all day (this was soon after lock-down had eased) The owner was very friendly and the interior of the building very nice. We ordered the steak diane and the steak and ale pie. Both were very tasty and were cooked to perfection, and we both had the orange bread and butter pudding, which was also very nice and filling. We plan to have a look around some more of the local area and explore more of the industrial past at some time, so we look forward to a return visit, hopefully fairly soon.

Recently ate at the Nicholls arms after a recommendation from a family friend, and what a great recommendation it was! Lovely welcoming pub with a roaring log fire, absolute heaven on a cold night. Had a drink by the fire first while having a look at the menu which was nice.My wife went for the ham hock terrine to start (the homemade piccalili is amazing, they should bottle it and sell it!!!!!!) which was very good, i had the meatballs, juicy, full of flavour baled in a tomato sauce, really really good. The wife had a ribeye to follow, cooked to absolute perfection, with all the trimmings and a peppercorn sauce too, which was very good.I had the pork belly with creamed cabbage and peas and mash. Belly melted in the mouth, crispy skin with the creaminess of the cabbage and peas was beautiful. To full for dessert sadly so went back to the fire for a couple more drinks.Service by the barman was great. Friendly and pleasant to talk too and he knew his wines when asking for a recommendation. Overall a really nice night in a lovely warm welcoming pub, great service but even better food, massive thank you to the chef, he knows his stuff! Will definalty recommend and be back soon.

Garlic mushrooms on ciabatta was lovely, creamy mushrooms, perfectly seasoned on toasted ciabatta, simple but a great starter.I had the 8oz ribeye steak, cooked m/r to absolute perfection, amazing homemade chips too go with it.The wife ordered the toad in the hole with onion gravy, in her words "stunning". Proper homemade food, crispy yorkie batter, tasty sausages, and super creamy proper mash and roasted carrots. Called in this evening for a meal with a friend- ordered Steak and ale pie with chive mash potatoes & peas. Mash was okay but a bit lumpy, peas were cold and sadly most of the tough meat in the pie was very Gristly & inedible. The waitress was lovely although didn’t ask if everything was okay clearly the plate went back with a lot of food on it which makes me think this could be a regular thing. The trio of deserts were lovely and the price of the food was a little bit high considering what we had probably won’t be returning which is a shame.

This was the second time we have been to the pub and it will be the last. I can't give it a terrible rating as my mum and my son enjoyed their meals and the lady serving with the dark hair is lovely and very courteous. I didn't want a meal with chips so I asked if the chicken Thai curry was good as I love Thai food. I was told that it was popular so I thought I'd give it a try. I thought it was a bit strange as it came with a poppadom but I ordered it. I was so disappointed by what I received. The rice was not jasmine rice as you would expect with a Thai curry but basmati, I don't think there was a drop of coconut milk in the curry and it appeared really gelatinous and the chicken looked like the worst off cuts. When the lady put it in front of me she asked if I wanted mango chutney. I think they are getting their cuisines mixed up or maybe trying unsuccessfully to fuse Thai and Indian foods. I had a few mouthfuls as I was hungry but I could not eat any more than that. The ladies serving were regularly asking the other diners if everything was all right but did not approach our table until right at the end. She then asked if everything was all right and I said "no, I can't eat this", to which she said "OK" and walked off! She didn't asked what was wrong with it and just cleared our dishes. I thought maybe she had accepted that the meal was substandard and perhaps when I went to pay the bill I may have been given a discount, but no I was expected to pay for a meal I didn't eat. Rather than make a scene we paid and left but if you're reading this Nicholls Arms, that's not really the way to treat customers and now a whole lot more people know it than the few in the pub. Enjoy your £8 something you got from me because there won't be any more.

Fish was a good size and beautifully battered, steak was cooked as requested and good quality. Chips and sides were spot on.Staff are very friendly and we both really enjoyed our meals and will certainly be back again with family and visiting friends.

We had booked but the three of us arrived a bit late, on a Friday afternoon, treat for my mum. However, this extremely atmospheric pub-restaurant could not have been more accommodating. It's as historical as the current website advertises, despite the change of hands in late 2015. The interior of the bar/lounge shows it off in all its splendour. Superb setting! Lovely wood-burning fire, topped up whilst we were there. At the 'front of the house', there was a choice of seating from a table, to lounging chairs, to corner pieces. Lovely photos on the walls, and tankards, Toby jugs and whatnot from history to look at.When it comes to the dining, I know that this place used to have its reputation with the previous owners, but I had never been here in that era, shamefully. However, our restaurant experience on this occasion was 'gold star'. We were served drinks, seated and given menus to choose from completely at our ease. We perused the very varied main menu (meat-fish-veggie) and eventually settled on Beef Pie, Nicholls Chicken and Hake. When we were then seen through the restaurant, which is as equally authentic as the rest of the place, it was wonderfully ambient. Rest assured, all three of us were more than satisfied with our choices. We all agreed how flavourful and rich our meat/fish had been. I must also say that whilst 'chips and peas' might seem the standard accompaniment for pub dining, the portions of said sides often leave one wanting, but here that was definitely not the case. All three of us relished our respective courses.I will definitely be returning here again and again. It's a lovely, cosy pub that serves lovely pub food, and it deserves to have the footfall and atmosphere and custom that would have once made it the lynch-pin of the area. "Mr and Mrs" (who I assume were Mr behind the bar and Mrs doing the restaurant bit) are really, really friendly and welcoming, and I really hope that they can keep this going. I certainly want to go back again as soon as I can!

My friends & I used to go here regularly for Sunday lunch but it has recently changed hands and when we went for Sunday lunch about 3 weeks ago it wasn't as good. The food wasn't very hot, one meal went back with a request to microwave it please. We commented on this stating that the food could have been hotter but unfortunately our complaint wasn't met very sympathetically!!

We also had our own room which was nice. Overall a great little local with nice food and nice staff. Would definitely return.

Each xmas 8 of us in the family meet up for Sunday lunch just before xmas.Plenty of room to park and a nice warm welcome on entering.Sat next to a log fire waiting to be called onto the restaurant.Caled in at 2 oclock right on the time booked.Plenty of room for the eight of us around the table,.Had the soup as first course which was delicious, all starters were excellent.Had chicken as the main course plenty of veg and delicious gravy,Dave the landlord also brought out additional roast potatoes, had icecream and coffee to finish.Overall we all agreed the food was excellent, delicious, and hot and served by very friendly efficient staff.Cost ud all in with drinks £36 per couple, we all put in £40 as it was well worth it.The only downside was Dave said he had just sold the pub and this may be his last Sunday as he and his wife are retiring, we wish them a long and happy retirement.Whoever takes over has a very high standard to aim for.

Lovely old traditional pub full of character, comfortable lounge with a log fire, nice settees and chairs in a relaxed setting, we visited on a Saturday night with two friends. On arriving we were greeted with a warm welcome by the owner, the dinning room is charming with lots of interesting nick knacks, excellent choice on the menu, we took a while to decide what to choose as they all appealed, the fish was very good, also the chicken with stilton, all meals were well presented and tasty, especially the real chips. The only thing that prevented me giving it a five star, was that our four meals were served with hard peas and some limp lettice leaves, however we would return again.

Great bar area, comfortable with a friendly atmosphere. Good selection of real ales and a place I could visit for a relaxing drink in very pleasant surroundings. We visited to eat in the evening in the rear restaurant rooms, which were again cosy. Food order starters and main were taken in bar area and we were called through when food was ready.Food was average pub grub and was a bit disappointed that it did not turn out to be any better.Bar service in restaurant was hard work trying to get bar staff attention, as was ordering desert which was a challenge in itself. A pleasant enough evening, would certainly return for a few drinks in the bar but not rush back for the food.

We have been to this pub for evening drinks a few times and loved it. The whole atmosphere is perfect. No music blaring, no loud youths, a log burner, low beam ceilings and Chesterfield sofa. We visited last week for a few bevvies and got talking to the owners. They were really welcoming and lovely. We then decided to book in today for Sunday dinner as we've not had one since Christmas. They have two sittings, we were booked in for 2pm (definately worth booking as it gets very busy). We ordered drinks whilst we were waiting as we arrived early but we didn't have to wait long. We were shown to our table. There are two dining rooms, one with is for families with small noisy children and the other for grown ups who can do without screaming children ruining their dinner. I had the roast lamb and my partner had the beef. It arrived promptly and was the most tender meat we've ever had. Simply delicious. They had starters to choose from also but we felt the roast would be enough, although we did manage to find room for a dessert.I highly recommend this pub. It's small, quaint and cwtchy. Like sitting in your ideal living room. Will definitely be having more roast dinners there. I can't wait :)
