Loved the Newton Arms and gutted to find it has permanently closed as of October 2015. I'm going to keep a close eye on the place as I understand it may re-open as a restaurant rather than a pub eatery. The one star reflects my disappointment. The Newton was 5 star every time I visited!

Was at ayr saturday 20th for the races and looked up trip advisor for somewhere to eat came upon the newton arms. Welcomed by a lovely young lady, ordered soup x 2 then steak pie and a balmoral chicken. Whilst waiting on main course table next to us got their meals - steak pie with no steak they sent it back were given a free round of drinks. We got our meals and my husband looked in his pie to find 4 or 5 tiny bits of steak. Told waitress it was tastless but we were hungry and didnt want to wait and longer. Terrible food. And to make matters worse bill atrived charging us for 2 diet cokes and 2 bottles of wine when it was 1 of each this was rectified. I thought we perhaps would have got money off for the dreadful steak pie or a free drink but nothing. Please avoid this place if in ayr its terrible

Visited the Newton Arms on a Sunday for lunch after looking at several reviews and with it also being down as the No1 restaurant in Ayr. We were the only table occupied which is not a great deal in itself but I did slightly wonder why the No1 place in the town would be completely empty on a Sunday at 1pm ?? The Nachos starter would have fed you for a week which is ridiculous for a starter that is meant to feed 1 person ! They were also pretty tastless. The other starter was Macaroni Balls and they were poor to say the least. Deep fried breadcrumb balls filled with dry macaroni drizzled in pesto were just weird and not appetising at all. The Jambalaya was actually ok but the burger was overcooked and had a horrible taste from it. I can't say that I will be visiting again anytime soon but maybe I just caught it on a bad day....

My partner and I arrived at the Newton arms on a Sunday evening at 5:30pm looking forward to a nice meal as many people had recommended it. After waiting at a table in full view of the barmaid for ten minutes, my partner went to the bar to ask about ordering food and was very rudely spoken to by the barmaid who said that the kitchen shuts at 6pm.....another half an hour away!!! There was no apology or explanation. All menus and cutlery were also still laid out on the tables. The Newton Arms website quite clearly states that the kitchen is open on a sunday until 9pm.....however this was not the case last week. Poor advertising and poor customer communication

Second visit to the Newton Arms. Greeted by warm, cheery owner who made us feel relaxed and welcome. My partner was attracted to the Newton Arms by the real ales and hand cut chips, two of his favourite things on the planet.Newton Arms does them both really well. Owner also let us try some 'real cider' which was absolutely delish. I will be back to try some more of that for sure. Partner had spicy battered chicken to start, which was lovely. We both had burgers, beef and chicken, served with the biggest basket of chips ever. Chips were crispy, with spicy cajun coating, nom nom. Partner also had a side portion of pulled pork, which he really enjoyed. Portion really generous for a side.If you like spicy, cajun type food, this place is for you!! There are plenty of other choices too. Last time I was here I had the steak and guinness pie, which was beautiful. Portion again was really generous. Best thing about today was the lovely, warm welcome and service. Also there were nice touches like home made salsa, fresh rocket on the burger rather than limp iceberg lettuce you might get elsehwere. There was home made colelslaw too served with the burgers. Owner brought us a nice jug of iced water too. These things make all the difference. Attentive and attention to detail, what a great combo!!!

Having been sent to Ayrshire with work recently a colleague and I stumbled upon this pub one evening and I returned every night for the 3 weeks I was there. The alcohol is reasonably priced and the food prices are excellent especially with the high standard to which the food is cooked and presented. I have played a lot more elsewhere and not been as satisfied. The decor is pleasant and atmosphere is great. The staff and locals are very friendly and I never once felt alone when my colleague was sent on another job .Would highly recommend this place for drinks, food and also great venue to watch sporting events.Food was delightful although unavailable on Mondays and Tuesdays but I suppose I can't begrudge the chef a couple of days off.Jambalaya was my favourite and can't wait to return to sample the rest of the menu I was only here through the week so never got to see the band's that are on of a weekend but have heard they are all excellent.

Managed to find time to head back to the Newton Arms today for lunch with my daughter and once again I could not give it any less than 5 stars. Not overly busy for food but a good few regulars in for drinks which created a nice friendly chatty atmosphere.Young guy who was on duty was lovely and took drinks order while leaving us to look at the menu and no rush to order which was great!! Menu has changed slightly since we were there last but again it is small but sufficient.Daughter ordered the Cajun Burger and I had gone with the notion of trying something different but after having the Jambalaya last visit and how good it was I finally decided on that again :D :D Once again all food is cooked to order and yes you do have to wait but it is well worth it - everything came out hot, well cooked and well presented.Cajun Burger was served with home made cajun chips and coleslaw..... my daughter said it was the best coleslaw she had tasted! Jambalaya was every bit as good as I remembered so clean plates all round!!They are now offering 30% food discount for students on production of student card so my daughter took advantage of that so the bill for the 2 of us came to £16 - an absolute bargain!!!

My mum and I visited the Newton Arms on Saturday 10th January for a late lunch and we will definitely be back. We were firstly so impressed with the warm and cosy atmosphere inside –the weather outside was horrendous that day and we entered to such a welcoming and inviting warmth. The waiter was were very attentive and greeted us with smiles and we were seated instantly. We were also so impressed with the menu which appeared simple but also has remarkable depth. Most pubs are known for simple pub grub but this menu has something special. Turning to the food, this is the best meal we have had in a long time. The food is to die for, so tasty and presented so uniquely! The waiter was very knowledgeable about the dishes, providing recommendations when we asked (I find having to choose a very difficult task and asked lots of questions! ). Our drinks arrived very quickly (amazing wine too!) followed by our food and we didn't feel like we were going to be asked to leave the table as soon as we were finished unlike other restaurants we go to. We felt very welcome and included in what seems like a lovely down to earth pub with a great mix of regulars and first time diners. We can't wait to go back again!

After reason some of the reviews on here I though we should give it a try, even if it's not in Prestwick! I'm very glad we did, as this is by far the friendliest bar I've been to in Ayr, serving some great grub.My mate and I had the Newton Burger and the Pulled Pork sandwich, washed down with the barman (Jim?) suggestion of local Real Ale - it was a light session Ale from Ayr Brewing Co i think. While we were in, there were about 10 others at the bar and 3 or 4 tables eating - i saw the Jambalaya and pizzas, both looked pretty great. The menu is a cross between traditional and some "out there" American diner style dishes - I applaud this and would like to see some risks taken here, maybe there's a niche of customers waiting for a real American style diner in Ayr!?Anyway, cost us £20 all in, which is fantastic value for money - I am used to Prestwick prices and this place reminds me of Elliots in it's relaxed bistro style approach - without the price tag!I feel sorry for the guy who posted the 1 star review, he missed out on some great food - in my experience, January in Ayrshire usually sees many restaurants and bars suffer a slump, so we should all try local and support guys like this.Keep up the great work and I'll venture along the presswork road again soon!

Judging by the reviews and the score for this place, the food in this place must be good because the atmosphere and welcome certainly were not. Had three attempts to park in the vicinity and ended up a few blocks away and walked to this Bar. On arrival, there were no staff in attendance and only 6 customers, an elderly couple were tucking in to food, two were just talking and two singles just kept staring at us. The place smelled fusty and of old beer. After a couple of minutes of waiting we decided to leave and as we were leaving a barman came out from a back room but I cannot see how this place gets such a high review for Ayrshire. The pictures on the website are not what it looks like and two large TVs showing sport is not what I would wish for for having a quality lunch. Sorry, we did not stay.

Thought I would try The Newton Arms given its recent rise on Tripadvisor and must say I was disappointed. The service was the big let down as it was terribly slow. The serving staff were fine I should point out, but the time it took for the food to come from the kitchen was agonising. When I was in there were only two tables of two in the restaurant part of the pub so I don't understand the reason for such a delay. My starter of chicken wings was average. My main course of pulled pork and homemade 'slaw was admittedly very good and almost worth the long wait! I should add that the chips on the side were brilliant! The food was very reasonably priced. If the service had been quicker this may have been a 4 star review.

Had to give this place a try after it shot up the popularity charts on tripadvisor over the last year. The overwhelmingly positive reviews weren't wrong. Newton Arms is a traditional old pub thats had a good lick of paint and fresh decor. There's a nice little beer 'garden' at the back for sunny days. The staff are warm and welcoming and there's some decent talent in the kitchen. The menu features old pub favourites alongside excellent pizza, nachos and some of the best chips I've ever tasted. So good to find an eaterie that doesn't charge a fortune for drink. Don't change guys and gals. You're doing it right!PS they show sport on the big screens, so if you're after a quiet meal try and avoid dining when popular matches being shown.

Had seen the reviews on here and decided to give The Newton Arms a try for lunch with my mother and daughter. From the minute we walked in the door we were treated like regulars and made to feel so welcome.Menus brought quickly and deals and dishes all explained. Plenty of variety on the menu without being overwhelming - they have obviously chosen to do several dishes to perfection instead of having a menu the size of a book and having to compromise on their quality.Ordered Jambalaya, Chilli and Mini Fish and Chips and what can I say other than the food was amazing!!!Jambalaya was packed full of haddock, chicken and chorizo and topped with 4 plump, juicy and cooked to perfection prawns. The Chilli was one of the nicest I have ever tasted and had just the right amount of heat. Fish and chips looked fantastic and the fish was coated in a light crispy batter and served with homemade (yeeyyyyyyyy) chips!!Daughter ordered the red velvet cake with ice cream - when the "slab" of cake arrived I thought she had no chance of finishing it - I was wrong...... not a crumb left!!!I would have no hesitation at all of recommending this establishment to anyone and I will certainly be returning in the very near future.Fantastic service and amazingly good food for a VERY reasonable price - Thank you!!!

Having just arrived in Ayr as a stop-off en route further north we went for a walk in drizzle that quickly turned into a real downpour. We came across the Newton Arms and were made extremely welcome despite being very wet, and the very helpful staff even gave us towels to help dry us off. Our dog was also welcomed, having a great fuss made of him and given a bowl of water. After a drink, we decided to stay for a meal and had delicious pizzas followed by puddings. A great experience over-all and thank you for your kind attention.

Stopped off in Ayr for a bit of food and a few drinks yesterday and have to say we were very impressed. There were four of us and the pub was already busy as it was Saturday evening yet the bar man was still able to give us more than enough attention and looked after us very well. The food arrived in great time after ordering and it was brilliant. We had ordered two pizzas, two burgers and a couple of sides and they all arrived together and beautifully presented. The pizzas were a particular highlight. We have eaten in some amazing pizza restaurants over the years and these were up there with the best! I had a 'Cluckin Hell' which was absolutely perfect. The company I was with thoroughly enjoyed their food too. The two pizzas, two burgers (which came with chips and coleslaw), a side of chips, a side of southern fried chicken, a bottle of wine, a pint and a can of juice came to £50, which we were shocked at as we thought it would have been a lot more! Will definitely be going back and the funny wee bar guy definitely earned his tip! Jimmy or Timmy was his name I think!

I visited here last week with 2 friends for a drink and a bite to eat after it being recommended by my sister. The food (I had the pizza) was lovely and the pub itself has undergone a massive change. It's definately a lovely wee pub now. Unfortunately our visit was let down by the rude barmaid. She barely looked at us let alone smiled or made us feel welcome. That could be because we interrupted her outside having a smoke (the smell clinged to her) So we rushed our meal and left. But that aside, it's a great pub. I'll be back but will check the staff first!

Great for watching the football with various screens throughout the bar. I will definitely be back when next in Ayr.

I'd never had jambalaya before last Friday. Stopped by for some lunch and oh man I've been missing out! The bar has been set high on this one. Delicious. Honestly cannot rate it high enough. I really want to try and make it myself now but just know it'll be crap in comparison. Starter was excellent too - southern fried chicken with chipotle mayo and some sort of jalapeno jelly. Highly recommended. I'll be back.

Visited on a recent family trip to Ayr and what a good choice it was.Food was excellent - well presented, filling and great value. Children's menus can often be an afterthought - but no so here. Our wee girl's dish was simple, but tasty and looked good. The Newton Arms is the sort of place that would be great for a night out for those that like their pubs modern, but homely. The new owners deserved credit for what they have done so far - long may it continue and would be delighted to return next time we are in town. Take a chance when you are in Ayr. Well worth a look.

The place was pretty empty when we arrived for dinner on a Thursday evening apart from one other table and some drunks so the ambience was lacking. A window was being replaced so there was dust and a damp smell which was off-putting. There was football on the telly so we sat where we couldn't see it.I feel that this place is trying to be all things to all people and satisfying none. If it wants to be a gastropub, ditch the telly and get the food standards up to match the drinks. Also replace the light bulbs that aren't working and dim the lights a bit.We had an Itison voucher for two mains and two large glasses of wine which was great value. The red wine was lovely and this place has one of the best stocked gantries I have ever seen. Someone clearly knows their booze and their wine. However, the food was disappointing. I think there's an inexperienced hand in the kitchen. I had the chicken wrapped in bacon with a cheese and leek sauce. The chicken itself was okay but the sauce looked and tasted as if someone had just warmed some cream and poured it over it - it was runny and the leek was hard to find - just some tiny flecks and there was no cheese - maybe it had run out - it wasn't what I would call a sauce. Some of the frozen chips were undercooked though there were plenty of them.Based on the other reviews my experience may not have been typical but I had a bought a couple of vouchers and ended up not using them because of it. Instead we ate at nearby Fillipo's Bistro and it was fabulous. (There was football on the telly here too!)

As a resident of Ayr I remember the bad old days of the Newton arms, what it used to be like, but now under new management and it certainly has been given a really good makeover,it is bright and really well decorated, staff are friendly and attentive, price of the drink is still reasonable,I have not ate in the pub yet but friends have and said it was very good,so will give it a shot soon.imy wife and I went in for a drink one Friday about 7pm, as I said it was pleasant and nice surroundings but the down side was some of the past customers are still slipping in,it was a table of 3 men and 2 women at a table near us and I can tell you the language was pretty bad and even worse loud so most of the patrons could hear it,it was so bad a few people left including us as it was not such a relaxed atmosphere then, just weed out these folks and it won't be long before decent, nice folk will be happy to visit this place regularly....so I say to the new owners keep it up you have certainly made a difference to the place already, well done

Came here over the weekend and expected a bit more after the five star reviews. The service was very good- friendly and welcoming, though it was quiet. The soup was a little strange- sweet potato tasted overly lemony to the point of sourness, though it was edible and we ate it. The mains were fine- good chips, great beef on the pie though the crust was a disappointment. I usually like my pie surrounded in pastry rather than with one stuck on top. It was a shame as this place has potential. The details need looking at- margarine served with good bread instead of butter, the pie crust etc. The rest is already there. Very welcoming and reasonably priced.

We had breakfast this morning and the coffee and bacon roll is always the best in Ayr. Cooked breakfast my husband had looked dry and good and not greasy at all. The only down side is the facilities - there has been a smell for many years but it is getting to the stage that it is unbearable. This wonderful eatery must to much better. The lovely people serving and tending to your every need are great and the ambiance in the room is always clean and lovely, it is a shame that the facilities are spoiling the visit.

Ate at this restaurant on a quite Friday afternoon with colleagues from work. Restaurant was lovely with great views of the golf course. Food was really nice and very good portions but maybe a little expensive for myself. Waiting staff were very poor… they didn’t know about gluten free food or drinks, they dropped the onion rings on the table and totally forgot one of the orders which we they had come back and take after we highlighted it. Staff let the place down.
