The New Bengal in Gosport

Sadly my takeaway was very burnt and chicken was dry.bin job!,victim of it own success,over an hour wait for food. disappointed

Since living in Gosport my partner and I have found a few restaurants and take-aways we both enjoy but nothing compares to New Bengal. Everything from the moment you walk in the door to leaving is perfect. The waiters here are very kind and all have a great sense of humour. And the food is always incredible. We always get a starter and a main. Some of the dishes here I've never seen in other Indian restaurants and are delicious. If you are going to visit on a weekend it's always best to book a table well in advance. It's always busy here and if you call on the day the phone will always be engaged (because of how good their reputation is.

It's been a while since we visited this little Indian Restaurant and I believe it is now under new management. However, the service and food is as good as I remember it from previous visits. Attentive waiters, quick service, fabulous food, reasonably priced. What more can you ask for? Plus it's always busy which, to me, is a sign of a good reputation. Keep up the good work guys!!

Superb food and very generous portions. It was very easy to order online and it was ready for us to collect on time. We will definitely be back.

Returned after several months and realised what a mistake I made . Food just delicious, just the right balance of spices and heat . Attentive staff , and judging how busy it was it remains the town’s favourite curry house.

When my friends and I had completed our meal, the reason that they were so busy and we had to wait for a table was more than obvious. The food and service were both flawless!! And the price very sensible. There are reasons I sometimes visit Gosport that guarantee I'll be eating here again when I do.

Just back from eating in this restaurant. The choice is extensive and different. Whilst serving the traditional curries Madras, Vindaloo, etc. It also offers a completely new recipe I had the chicken naga murgh, hot and favoursome. My group thought their dishes were excellent. The staff are polite and attentive. Very busy place , although I recommend you book in advance as it was very busy.

Found the food to be very bland and overall an average 3, although I did consider awarding this a 2 based on food alone. Nice waiters however will not be returning.

Food was amazing - one staff member very polite and helpful - but rest of staff quite curt and abrupt couldn' wait to get rid of us - it felt like a fast food cafe and a poor one at that. I feel they should not book you in if they cannot give you a decent service. Sad to see a much loved curry house get like this

Great indian food! We ordered a lot of different dishes and everything was just delicious! High quality food and a really friendly service!

We were warmly welcomed, which was the best bit of the experience and shown to a table, First impressions, that evening, were that the restaurant was clean. The music was very loud and the phone, even louder. Having selected a main course and drinks, each, we were offered papadoms, and some extras for the mains, which were agreed. Two minutes after the arrival of the papadoms and accompaniments (why put spoonables to one side and the papadoms between us?) , the waiter came and said, 'your main course is ready, would you like it now?' It would have been clear that we were only a quarter-way through the starter.. We asked for a five-minute delay, which was literally that, when he asked again. OK, then .. The mains arrived, looked nice. Mine was meant to be king prawns in a cashew and coconut sauce. The sauce was sweet and there was no evidence of cashews, in any form. The accompanying lemon rice was tepid and had many pieces of chopped lemon in it. I like lemon zest, but not pith, I don't think anyone enjoys the pith - so I put all the chunks, but one, to the side of my plate. The peshwari naan was delicious. The bottled beer was as expected. Clearing the table, the waiter spilt some rice in the table and a tablemat, but did not return to clear up the spill. Not good. We decided not to order anything else and had long since, decided not to return. An evening that started so promisingly, fell flat. This used to be a very good restaurant. Not any more.

Ordered online, a great choice of food. Delivery was prompt. Not eaten from here before and we were not disappointed, absolutely outstanding food, probably the best indian I've eaten for a long while. Now high on our list to eat at the restaurant.

The thing with The New Bengal is consistent flavour and quality ingredients. The Kitchen and preparation areas are spotless. The screens between tables effective. Staff are very polite, which cannot always be said about customers. It is well known as the Best Bengali Restaurant in the sailing world hence you have the frequent visitors like Robin Knox Johnson, plus many celebs. and other customers who are celebs in their own right. Sonny and his team treat all the same.

Fantastic place, lots of social distancing to make customer feel safe. Food was excellent, hot plates, friendly and polite staff. Second time we have been, will be coming again for sure. Can highly recommend the chicken dhansak.

Emptied the Restaurant so as to deal with Carry out food only. The meals are as good as before so really worth the travel. Had a little trouble booking as the World and his wife rang so constantly engaged.

Wonderful takeaway from this restaurant near to the Royal Clarence Marina. Being ex Brummies we are always looking for comparisons to the Indian meals of our youth in Sparkbrook!!! This did not disappoint - well done - wish you were near where we live in Chichester - never mind we will always come to you when we are staying on our boat at the marina.

We had a fabulous meal delivered to us last night for my husband's birthday and it was superb. Very friendly and helpful when I rang even exchanging a couple of dishes on the thali for other ones and sending complimentary poppadoms and a beer! We have eaten here many times and it’s our favourite restaurant. As it was a special occasion last night we tried the takeaway service. Easy to order on the phone. The whole meal was gorgeous. We had starters,bread as well as the mainmeal so there is enough left for us to have it again tonight! Can’t wait. Thankyou so much

Been coming here since my navy days in the early 90s (although not as often as I would like)Both the food and service are excellent but would advise booking before as it does get very busy (don’t remember a night where it wasn’t)So if you have a love of good Indian cuisine this is def the place to go in Gosport

Fairly small indian restaurant, fast service, good food, some nice speciality dishes. Fairly standard drinks menu, but Bangla beer is a welcome addition as you don`t always see this.

Thanks again New Bengal Team. Once in a while I treat myslef to a cheeky Indian. This place has a service which is 2nd to none. Even as a take away customer, they hold the door open for you when you leave (it's the small touches), treat you like a sit in customer and can't do enough for you.As for the food. Exceptional as always. The chicken is phenomenal, the flavour is full and the portion sizes are more than ample. Naan bread was delicious and papadums were so moreish.Thanks again guys. 5/5 once again.

Every time I have eaten here the restaurant has been full - even at 6.30pm on a Tuesday. The staff are friendly and the food is great. I decided to try something different tonight and would highly recommend the spicy prawn and green mango curry (‘Raja jhinga manga’). Parents throughly enjoyed prawn and chicken tandooris and the atmosphere was buzzing.

Been going here since 1962, Restaurant went quiet for a few years when the Navy bases closed in the 1990's but now, its so busy you have to book. You sit there and look up and people are queuing about 6 at a time, Sunny or Mac try to accommodate, or they pop off for a drink having booked then return. Because this place is so good with people travelling miles when you speak to them, the regulars now have to book unheard of til about 3 years ago. Do not turn up on the off chance of getting a table.

Never been disappointed at the new bengal. We have visited as a couple, with friends and in large groups. Small restuarant but warm and comfirtable and welcoming.

I come down from Berkshire to see my Mother-in-law and we always go to The New Bengal. The food is excellent, and the staff could not be any nicer. Very professional, always polite and the restaurant is always clean.

We've only been here once, but I can honestly say friendly and exscellent service, reasonable prices, I can tell a good curry place by how they cook their dhansak, which is my favourite dish, it was bloody lovely! Will visit again soon.

My wife and I frequent this amazing restaurant regularly. We have NEVER had a bad meal, on the contrary, EVERY visit has delivered a fabulous gourmet experience. We cannot recommend the New Bengal strongly enough. It is a MUST VISIT place to eat.

Very impressed with this local Indian restaurant, situated in Gosport. It's the first time I've visited,and I have to say' the food was delicious. The only slight let down,was the poppadoms,these were very oily and what ever oil was used was either on the cheap side,or stale,I can't decide which. However I wouldn't allow this discrepancy to put me off from returning. Hopefully it was a one off. Would highly recommend to anybody looking for a tasty Indian meal.

Lovely food, always warm and welcoming I cannot rate this Indian restaurant enough. I tried the Balti dish recently and I was amazing, the food is always piping hot and well presented. Well done The New Bengal keep up the good work.

Definitely the best around and I regularly travel from London to Hampshire, because it is in a sleepy Town Gosport, it was easy to book a table. I have been going to this restaurant since 1961 same family, although the owner originally worked for another when it was the Koh-i-Noor, that was until 1968. I now have a 40 minute drive for last 11 years here it was 10 minutes. But it is worth the drive, but you will have to book. Brilliant Vindaloo and Pharl curries.

What a shame you get a load booking massive table of around 16 only for half of them not to show up, meanwhile staff have to turn genuine people away. Then a load of swearing as they struggle to put sentence together. The staff at the New Bengal were professional and were civil and explained they were loosing money because of someones inability to get actual numbers attending as opposed to speculating. Lovely watching then try to blend in with us people watching, we had a great meal and evening, thou.

The New Bengal has been top of the list for years when it comes to Asian food. A family run restaurant with great food and excellent attentive staff. It's best to book early at weekends.

Let me start by saying I love Indian food and have eaten in many and varied restaurants both in the uk and abroad. So maybe I have high standards, or have become accustomed to a better quality experience - I don’t know. But overall the New Bengal would class as below average.

We arrived on time, although we had booked for maximum 15 persons, only 9 had arrived due to unforeseen circumstances (which were out of our hands). The head waiter/manager was rude from the off because only 9 arrived. There were no other persons in the restaurant at the time, but moaned that he could be serving other customers. Upon ordering food, he was rather short and rude upon reasonable requests. We felt we were u welcomed even though we complimented the great food. Unfortunately our party feel that the staff lacked people skills, which is sad because the experience should have very positive. We attended for a great friend's birthday, but we all left disappointed. We must say the food was excellent which makes it a very sad affair. We have given 3 out of 5 due to the excellent food only. This is a review by myself, my father, my brother, and our crestfallen dear friend Dave who we are still attempting to locate. RIP.

Awful food Curry tasted like cardboard Naan and poppadoms clearly yesterday’s warmed up. Never again.

Just have to say another fantastic well cooked meal. Everything presented perfectly and very tasteful yet again. This restaurant always produces the best curries in the area. I have to come time and again and always tell friends this is the best curry house. It's been open as long as I can remember.

Visited twice now and enjoyed both evenings. Food has been lovely both times and the staff have been quick and friendly. Menu is huge but the waiter taking the order was happy to talk us through some of the options. Portions seem over generous so need to keep that in mind when ordering. Its a small but popular place so can feel feel a little crammed and chaotic when really busy (as it was on our 2nd visit). Will look forward to going back though.

We went there last night booked a table as we were told it gets very busy ,we ordered starters and mains the food was gorgeous chicken very tender ,the menu was very good so much choice so you could choose to have spicy or not ,the staff were very friendly and made sure the table was kept clutter free ,the place is only small so spaces are very limited if you walk in off the street ,also a takeaway which was very busy but didn't take away any attention from our table of three would defiently reccomend and would use again

Found hair in sauces with popodoms, also hair in main, and service was so rude and poor had to litterrally take our own dishes of trolley and pass around. Shame as this has been nice in past but will never eat here again.

We visited as a group of friends and were really looking forward to our visit. Unfortunately it didn’t leave up to our hopes. The chicken was ‘grainy’ and chewy and not one of us ate our food as it tasted awful- the only saving grace was the naan bread which we shared and ate with the rice as everything else was inedible.

We orders a collection takeaway two weeks in a row, the 1st occasion the food was like warm but hubby said was busy when he collected we waited over an hour, so I let it go, the following week the same an hour from ordering to collecting, it was again lukr warm each dish had 2 mins a in microwave to be able to eat it, I telephoned and complained but the person on end of phone didn’t seem bothered, told me it was kept warm on a hot plate, well the hot plate must be fault, it’s a real shame cause the food tastes good, but needs to be served hot!

As regular visitors here, we find the quality and service usually quite good. On this occasion, though, the staff were hap hazard in the way they served our drinks and food, and all without a smile between them.

I came in on a wet, miserable weeknight recently to order take out. To my surprise, the place was packed with all seeming to be having a good time. The quiet, subdued Indian restaurant this was not! I ordered a lot of food as I had a large number of mouths to feed and I was shocked (positively) at the amount of the bill. When I got the food home, all professed everything to be excellent. I should also add that the staff, though very bust with in house customers, were very friendly and helpful. Now my go to spot in Gosport for Indian food!

I am rather bemused by the unrestrained enthusiasm in some of the previous posts. However, I had left thinking that some of the locals might be satisfied. If you have a wide experience of Indian or Bangladeshi restaurants, I think you might be a little more demanding. Only moderately busy when we arrived on a Sunday evening, it soon became quite a lot busier. I was annoyed that two tables who arrived after us received their mains before us but we had had starters. A Tikka Salad was a bit baffling. The meat was not well seasoned and the salad would not have been out of place in Italy. I don't believe olives are authentically Indian. There is sufficient variety on a long menu to encourage adventure but I was immediately concerned that the default description is 'spicy' and we were told that this meant Madras heat. A less challenging chicken dish still had quite enough chilli in it but was nothing special. My partner's tandoori mixed grill was generously large but no part of it was especially exciting. Rice and lentils were, apparently, prepared with little or no salt. Service was slightly clumsy as dishes were plonked on to the table. For anyone with knowledge of local alternatives, there was nothing to encourage a change of loyalty.

The food here is simply the very best ! Curry's are amazing ... would highly recommend it - manager and staff are very friendly and helpful. Never had a better curry anywhere else even on London !

What a fabulous find!! We hadn’t booked but managed to get the last table. The staff were fantastic, really helpful and friendly! The food was amazing, I would go as far to say best Indian ever! I have celiacs and they were really helpful telling me what I could and couldn’t have, the menu had gluten free clearly marked also.

Had a family meal here early evening. We were the first people there - small restaurant, looked OK. Didn't receive a particularly friendly welcome from the waiter and I nearly walked out at that point. But the menu had a few unusual things on it, particularly for vegetarians. I went for one of the spicy curries which was OK, my partner's vegetarian curry was the best they'd had in a restaurant. About £50 for the four of us including drinks - decent value.

We visited on a Saturday evening. The food was very good, as was the service. the only problem was some of the other customers. There were 2 groups who were very drunk and about to fight each other. It did not make for a relaxing meal! Not the fault of the restaurant though.
