Went for a late dinner last night (9:15). Sat down next to a couple who had been there since 7:30. They said it had taken them 30 mins to get a drink and that they had waited extremely long for their food. We had the opposite experience, service felt rushed, we had ordered and eaten and paid in about 45 minutes. Our table was booked from 9:15-10:45 but we were out at 10:00! Walked past the restaurant 10 mins later and it had been completely emptied… During the meal I went to the loo and came back to see my plates had been cleared with food I was eating still on them. All dishes came out together (starters and mains), and my partner agrees that it felt like we had to rush our meal because the servers or management wanted to begin closing. Why offer a late dinner table 9:15-10:45 if you are going to close the restaurant before the booking is over?

The service was good, but two people in my party were pretty ill about two days after eating the (sloppy) Prawn Pad Thai so we suspect it could have been food poisoning

Lovely establishment very nicely located on the high street. The service was excellent with the wait staff being very attentive. the atmosphere of the venue is also great, however the food lacks a little, especially for the price. Not the cheapest establishment, but ordered the duck spring rolls and vegetable tempura starters, both were fine, not amazing. Mains ordered: Crispy pork belly and Mapo Tofu both again fine but nothing special. portion size was massive with a mountain of rice for both dishes but all 4 dishes just lacked the flavors which other restaurants can provide. 3/5. Wouldn't go back as there are better places in Newcastle.

Lovely meal with friends, food and drinks were lovely and well priced. Only issue we had was the time slot ran out before we could consider any dessert, food took quite a while to come out after ordering, and once those plates were cleared we weren't offered anything else. We were then left until the slot was up before anyone came back to us. Only downside to the evening.

Nice place and good food but service let it down a little, arrived at 6:50pm for a 7pm booking and due to waiting so long to be served (roughly 7:15pm and was not busy) was no longer eligible for the 3 small plate offer. Bit disappointed that this wouldn’t be honoured considering it was due to waiting for staff.

We went here for the first time because it looked inviting from the outside and it was amazing. A wonderful, warm relaxed atmosphere. Staff were attentive but not intrusive and we were made to feel at home. The food was absolutely delicious, freshly made and beautifully presented. Sadly we were in a rush to get to the theatre and couldn't fully enjoy this place- I could have stayed all evening. We will definitely be back.

Lovely food, apart from the edamame beans which were too tough. You only get 90 mins at your table and food took about 60 mins to arrive. So felt a little rushed. When we asked if we could have longer given food was late staff were happy to check, and we were allowed an extra 15 mins. Nice atmosphere although tables are quite close together. Staff who served our table were all lovely.

Unfortunately we had a not so pleasant visit to the Muddler on Saturday evening. We had previously booked online for 2 people, paying a £10 fee for this, but due to a change of plans we had an extra person eating with us. Due to needing to send a WhatsApp in order to change bookings which was majorly inconvenient, we instead decided to arrive to our booking 30 minutes early in order to see if there was a possibility of getting seated as a 3. We knew this may not be possible due to the small nature of this restaurant but thought trying would be better than not showing up. We were shouted to at the door by a very rude gentleman behind the bar who seemed greatly inconvenienced at our presence. When we asked about adding the extra person, he simply pointed to the table which had two seats and said 'that's your table'. We asked again thinking he had misunderstood but he abruptly said that we had only booked a table of two. Obviously it is completely understandable for the restaurant not being able to cater to our now larger party but the way in which we were spoken to felt completely out of order for the request we had. We left the restaurant and had a lovely meal at Kaltur- would definitely recommend! Having been sent an email asking for feedback from the Muddler and explaining our poor experience, we got yet another poor response from Jonny Lodge Customer Experience Manager stating 'it was unfair to say the staff were not accommodating' when in fact the issue lied with the rudeness of staff. Yet another example of this company not understanding the needs of the customer. Overall a terrible experience from walking into the restaurant to the follow up of management after the visit.

This should be 4.5 stars really. The waitress was excellent and took great care, making sure the food was fine for my husband, who has a fish allergy. The food was excellent. We had small plates and a side of noodles to share and really enjoyed all of them. The only thing I'd improve was the drinks. The wine was poor quality, I left about half of it.

Love this restaurant. Always opt for a selection of small plates and sometimes sushi to share so you can have multiple dishes. Food is always delicious and I’ve never been disappointed. Great for a meal with a small group where you can all share food. Cocktails are also great here and the service has always been excellent. Atmosphere is relaxed but it still feels like an upmarket place without being stuffy. It’s split into two parts and both are cosy in size but big enough to still have atmosphere.

I gave 3 stars for food. The reason is i felt the way the food was presented and prepared/cooked. It could have been elevated. I had higher expectations, and to be honest, i was let down. The portions size for the sashimi was a huge disappointment, 3 tiny slices. The fried rice was fine but not worth it, in my opinion. The best part was the sushi, but even that was okay. I wasn't wowed. That's what i look for in Japanese ( pan asian ) flavours. The restaurant itself was gorgeous, very welcoming. I loved my espresso martini! Lovely selection of Japanese spirits and soju. I just wish the food could be elevated and give me a burst of flavour and authenticity. Instead, it gave, im trying to do authenticity but haven't got it yet. Overall i feel like it was around 6/10. P.s the pork belly looked UNREAL. People next to me ordered it and honestly it didnt disappoint my eyes lol

First time eating at The Muddler. I love Thai/Asian food and would definitely rank this near the top. Food was excellent quality, the meat cooked to perfection. Portion sizes were great and the sauces had lovely flavour. A tad on the pricey side (£8 for 4 small duck spring rolls and £17.50 for main) so this would likely be a treat rather than a regular eat out place.

Food looked nicer than it tasted, beautifully presented though. Felt a little cramped in the restaurant as tables were quite close to each other. Dark decor, and lacked atmosphere, in my opinion. Service was super slow, waiting 15-20 minutes waiting for a drinks order to be taken, so decided to order our food at the same time. Waiting for 1 hour from entering the restaurant to being served food for 2 people seemed a bit long. By the time the food arrived, we had forgotten what we had ordered ! We had 3 small plates each to try, and noodles and rice. Disappointed and probably wouldn't recommend it to my friends and family.

Shocking service, when you ask for the “house red” and the staff say they don’t specify a house wine so they charge you the most expensive wine on the list. House wine specifies that you would like the cheapest wine available. To make matters worse, when we were provided with the bill, we asked the member of staff why we were charged the most expensive wine they made out that we chose that option and that we were in the wrong which is not how to treat a customer at all. We were talking about coming back as it was our first visit and the food was amazing and in general the service from other members of staff was excellent. But this particular interaction was really quite unpleasant and the Muddler will now sadly be losing out on repeat customers.

Very nice environment with friendly staff (although slow service) but the food was not good overall (Overpriced fake foreign food). The Thai green curry was far too sweet and came with congealed rice. The dish called ‘mapo tofu’ does not resemble Mapo tofu in anyway - even using the wrong type of tofu. The sushi was very nice and fresh but one piece had a large bone still in.

The small plate dishes were fantastic, however, the main dishes, not so good. My wife ordered Pad Thai and, as this is a classic dish, it should not really be messed with as you aren't really there for an alternative. Her Pad Thai tasted more like a pasta dish unfortunately, along with the noodles being rather mushy. Chef's should not mess with classic dishes in my opinion. Would I go back, yes! As said earlier, the small plate dishes were excellent and therefore would go to have multiple of these.

Lovely place. Loved the ambience and friendly staff. Food was very tasty and the main dish was a very large and filling portion. I have given 5 stars because it would be unfair to give them a four star because the experience was really nice asides from the fact that the main meal took very long to come and the sitting area is white small. However, the sides and drinks came way quicker which to be fair… it’s notorious with fancy restaurants with great food because a great meal does take time to prepare. So I am utterly satisfied and I left grinning from ear to ear. For a large group though, the space might be a tad bit small but if it’s an outing for two or a group of 4 then it’s not so bad.

I had heard some good things about the muddler (and some mixed reviews) but it had been somewhere I had wanted to try for a while. We were a booking of over 6 which meant they wanted pre orders and we could only order from the set menus (which were very limited). And from sitting down the food did take a while which I thought was a bit odd since we had already ordered everything. The edamame peas were quite nice but then the serving came out and the portions were very small for the price, the food was warm at best (as if it had been sitting for a while before being sent out) and the fried rice as a side came out quite late Vs the rest of the meal. The service itself was very good the waitress was great and attentive however, I feel like it was let down by the food as it didn’t match the price which was charged.

We're travelled quite far for an overnight stay in the city and had really high hopes after looking at the pictures online - we definitely weren't disappointed. The service was friendly and attentive even though it was clearly a busy evening with the restaurant being full the whole time we were there. For food we had a dim sum platter and shared small plates which were all amazing. We did have to wait quite a while for food to arrive but it does say on the menu that everything is prepared fresh so it's understandable and definitely worth the wait. I had heard how lovely the food was at the Muddler…and absolutely well done to the chef..the sushi was outstanding and made fresh. However…….if you want to enjoy a cared for dining experience ….pop up the road for similar approach at McDonald’s. Apart from a lovely young girl serving ….the guy with the bun had an awful manor. Please send him on a customer service course asap! He promptly pushed the bill at us telling us he needed our table, the main meal was nearly an hour late so we had been previously reassured that this wouldn’t be a problem as it was their error. He then proceeded to not listen, and talk loudly over me without listening though I asked him at least 4 times to please let me finish my sentence of justification why we were ‘ over our allocated time’….he did then call over his manager who said they had ‘targets’ to meet!…I imagine he must be a new manager as no matter the pressure you don’t mention your targets to customers. The whole experience was shocking and upsetting for the group and as a ps I was not drinking so feel I can respond with an accurate write up… I am not after a free voucher or a revisit….but please have a team. meeting asap and sort your customer service out.

We booked a table for a friend's birthday. We arrived on time and had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. We understood that restaurant was busy but the attitude of the bar staff was appalling. They were disinterested and more concerned with table bookings and time slots rather than taking care of their customers in front of their eyes. After 10 minutes of trying to make eye contact and get one of the staffs attention, she looked at me and spoke to me like I was an inconvenience. When I eventually ordered drinks and paid for them it took a further 10 minutes and 2 further enquiries as to where the drinks were . I was then told responded to in a sharp prickly tone. When our table was ready, we got told we could sit. We didn't get shown over. We ordered drinks at the table and the lady who served us spilt a drink all down the back if that birthday girls dress. She was clearly very embarrassed and apologied profusely. However we weren't offered any gesture of good will or anything to demonstrate an apology. Unfortunately the girl with the headphone was stressed and struggling to cope and made no attempt at disguising her frustration and stress. The gentleman at the ba with dread locks was disinterested with poor customer service. There was a young lady with glasses who served and cleaned the tables and she was much better. I observed her reassuring that lady wearing the headphones several times and despite how busy they restaurant was ,she appeared to take it in her stride and get on with the task in hand. In all honesty that way we were treat put us off completely. The food was ok but I wouldn't return based on the chaos and attitude of the staff.

We booked here as a group for a graduation cerebration. Initially, we tried booking as a whole group of 17 but it would appear there is a downside to this. Instead of the normal £5 deposit we were advised the deposit would be £10 per person. Also, large groups need to order in advance from a set menu. The set menu is limited and no one from the group wanted to order from it. We then divided the group into four separate bookings so we can access the normal menu. A few days before the booking we found out that the groups were on separate floors. I spoke to one of the supervisors Molly who was super helpful. In the end they were able to sit us all on the same floor. The front of the restaurant is currently under renovation so to access the restaurant, we had to use numerous stairs which was unfortunate for the elderly gentleman with us. It became a nightmare accessing the toilet too as this required another track around the stairs. I have had some food here before and it is usually nice. However, on this day, the service was unbelievably slow! It took about an hour to even get the starters! By the time the main meal arrived, it was nearly two hours later! We ordered a variety of dishes including pork belly which is my favourite, as usual this did not disappoint. At the end of the meal, Molly served a little fancy pudding for our graduate which was really nice. I would definitely come back here again in future but the slow service was a turnoff.

Nice food, very slow service. Don’t mind waiting for food but had to wait for drinks for 30 min and the table was literally in 2 steps from the bar! The answer was that they were short in staff. How many staff you need to put a bottle of water on the table in such a hot day?

An amazing lunch in the sunshine, the food was so good cannot fault any of the small plates. Our waitress Ruby was so lovely, even arranging a little celebratory dessert for us because we had just got our grades back. Can’t recommend enough!

The restaurant has a 'not my problem' attitude to allergies, which is fine if they inform in advance. My colleague informed them of allergy at the time of reserving our table, upon being seated they gave him a choice of two dishes from the entire menu due to allergy! If they had informed in advance they cannot accommodate, we would not have turned up and had an awkward meal together.

The Muddler is a favourite go to restaurant for me and my husband as we've never eaten anything we didn't like there. We picked a few of the small plates on the menu and all of them were delicious. I enjoyed a couple of their signature cocktails to go along with my meal and recommend the Gin Berry fizz. There is a lovely atmosphere and the staff are very attentive but not intrusive ensuring that you're not waiting too long for food or drinks. Remains in our top 5 restaurants in Newcastle

Lovely restaurant, this was our third visit. Great asian cuisine, I'd especially recommend the crispy duck bao bun. The drinks are great as well, the mojito cocktail was the best I've had. Staff are extremely friendly, overall we had a great meal out.

The food was nice enough, as were the cocktails. The wait was a little bit longer than what you’d expect in a restaurant of this size. The other downside was the bar staff constantly running back and forth between the two buildings of the restaurant, to fetch ingredients for cocktails etc.

Average, overpriced food. Nothing special about it and not worth the premium cost compared to other restaurants serving the same food at cheaper cost.

Always highly recommended and rightly so. Fantastic options of pan-asian cuisine cooked amazingly. There is a fair price put on the food but it is worth it plus there are daily deal options available. Great, fast friendly service. Good selection of cocktails and other drinks. Kirin lagar in bottles too 👌 Great for lunch/dinner small plates or can get larger meal of you choose. Will definitely be visiting again.

An interesting mix of Asian food, the prices are reasonable, service good and food pretty decent. Whilst it can't match an actual Asia restaurant it is a venue worth going to.

This is for the customer care manager we spoke with in Newcastle on Saturday night😀 As an immunocompromised person this place has been a godsend to my partner and I especially during covid. I have blood cancer and am at high risk from the more severe effects of covid. Therefore we minimise indoor social contact as much as we can but we also have to have a bit of a life too. Here we can sit outside, have table service and people watch to our hearts content due to the fantastic location on Grey Street and all whilst minimising risk. The return of the electric heaters is most welcome and the staff are always friendly, polite and understanding. My only gripe would be the layout of the outside tables in relation to the umbrellas. The umbrellas fully cover the two standing tables which are hardly ever used but only partially cover the seated tables. The consequences of this are; 1. If it rains then all outside tables and chairs get wet and are unusable for a time. A few times we have had to go elsewhere (their rival across the street 😱) because when we arrived nowhere was dry to sit down. We have also witnessed plenty of other people who wanted to sit outside go elsewhere due to the wet furniture. Staff have tried drying them for us but this is not ideal as staff aren’t always free for this and the furniture doesn’t dry properly. We tried this once and ended up with a wet arse 😀 2. If it rains once we are seated then we have to quickly finish our drinks and go or stand awkwardly at the standing table, this is not an option if other people are wanting shelter here too. The umbrella placement also affects all other outdoor patrons, especially people who are dining. If it rains when the outdoor tables are full then people and their food are going to get wet, nobody wants a soggy sandwich or indeed a soggy bottom! The Muddler is the best on Grey Street and if they sort the umbrellas out then it will be even more besterer😀. P.s the food and drink are just as fantastic

Tough one. My ramen was a bit underwhelming – really bland, just a tiny bit of pork and bulked up with tinned sweetcorn. BUT my friend had the beef teriyaki and that was incredible. Loads of tender
