The Mintlaw Chipper in Aberdeenshire

I was into this Chipper a week ago i've had a couple of bad experiences from here before but thought i would give the place another chance and what a mistake this was. Ordered a Cheeseburger supper waited nearly 20 mins despite there being hardly anybody there when it finally arrived the burger was cold and the chips were defiantly re -heated ( despite what the owner says in multiple responses ) and disgusting needless to say it went in the bucket and i certainly wont be back ive had better chips form the local chineese

Chips tasteless. I do not know why. Obviously, it was either the potatoes or the oil or a combination of both.

My 78 year old mother booked a delivery in advance and paid upfront, she received no delivery and couldn't get through on the phone so walked down to see what the issue was. On arrival tragically there had been a fire and the shop had no electric. My mother asked if they were open and was shouted at and sarcastically and loudly thanked for her concern and informed aggressively ' My wife and i have lost thousands'. My mother asked for a refund to allow her to buy something else to eat from another shop (she didn't bring her purse as her meal was pre paid) . She stated she didn't need a lecture just a refund and was chased out the shop and threatened he 'better not see her again' .I understand the fire caused upset but its not the customers fault and bullying pensioners isn't acceptable. None of my friends or family will be spending our money in this chip shop.

With the time it took to present me with my order I assumed I'd be getting freshly cooked chips with my pie...not so! The worst chips I've had in a long time. Thain's steak pie was good but of course it was deep fried and I paid for it later which is why I generally only have chips from any chippie. Can't chip shops find another way to heat them? After eating what was edible at a table outside I popped back in to clean my hands with the covid wipes on offer only to be verbally challenged by a dragon lady for having the temerity to do so, conveniently forgetting I'd just been relieved of £7 for a poor quality meal.

Waited 15 minutes without being acknowledged for a phone order, not the first time either. Staff go out of their way to avoid eye contact so couldn't even get their attention.

This is the first time I’ve been to the Mintlaw Chipper for battered haggis chips and curry sauce. I had not preordered so after giving my order was given an alarm to tell me when the food was ready and asked to wait in the car to keep a safe distance from others. The food was excellent, definitely will visit again.

Terrible!! slow service and chips like rubber and definitely not fresh!! This seems to be happening quite a lot at this place

Pathetic phone ordering system get told a time to then go in and be ignored and made to wait longer so 40mins in total to get home and open my supper to mostly burned reheated disgusting chips absolutely shocking for the price and the staff are extremely rude! No maximum number of people in chipper put in place either for COVID just a rediculous social distance system in place follow the arrows which by the way are very confusing!!

Got home to open the box to un fresh re fried greasy fish and chips that tasted tainted and disgusting I won’t be back

Très bon Fish and chips avec un large choix à la carte. Peu de place en salle, le personnel est très serviable et sympathique. Grand choix de desserts très « british ». Le tarif est très correct. Le service « take away » est impressionnant à voir à l’heure de sortie des élèves à la pause déjeuner!!!

This Is a lovely place to go for afternoon tea, all the food is lovely and service 1st class . The selection on the takeaway menu is pretty good as far as to say very difficult to make your mind up once you are there , but you can never beat there large fish supper.

I have had many chippies over my 60+ years and got to say this is the best I have had. As well as the friendly staff and the quality of the food it was a treat well worth a visit.

Stopped here to get coffee and eats. I treated myself to full breakfast but had black pudding /haggis instead of sausage. Piping hot and very tasty. Pleasant staff and atmosphere

Not sure why under special diets “vegetarian friendly” is listed on here since the chips are cooked in beef dripping so obviously not suitable for vegetarians.

When coming for a sit in supper, you would expect to be served at the table,however after 4.30pm you have to go to take away que in front place your order then go to your seat. Also they got a great coffee machine behind counter, so I ordered a lattee to be told only standard coffee or tea available.You would think as 5pm is busy they would have some staff on in resteraunt to use coffee machine and serve customers at table.Food is good,but served up on cheap plastic plate.Lovely cafe, let down by lack of service.

We had our lunch here on Tuesday. Yet again, the food was absolutely delicious, the staff always make you feel so welcome, they are always so cheery & clearly value their customers. I would have no hesitation whatsoever on recommending anyone, of any age to visit here - you will not be disappointed! I can't wait to go back! Very many thanks & Well done.

Was there this evening the batter was awful not crispy in the slightest definitely don’t change there oil enough

Went in on the off chance for a coffee really glad we did/ staff extremely helpful/ great selection of herbal teas/ plenty of choices of pastries and home made biscuits / toilets gleaming and fresh/

This chippa is the best, staff are amazing. Owner very friendly. Small we gem of a place. Fantastic access for chi3and disabled people . Keep up the good work

This is seriously the best chipper I have ever had, they do great chips and it is at a very reasonable price with a short waiting time and take away absolutely love this chipper and will be back

Had a carry out Fish Supper on Saturday evening from this place. By far one of the best fish suppers we’ve had for ages. Will definitely use again on our next visit to Mintlaw.

Went into the restaurant for our supper. I had the large fish supper with mushy peas plus a side of curry sauce and my wife had the medium fish supper with garden peas.

Jumbo haddock supper, chip steak supper, chicken curry, chicken fillets and salad £21.00. Really tasty and one of the best chicken curry’s I have ever eaten. Busy on a Friday night so did have a bit of a wait (15 minutes)

Visited today to sample afternoon tea for my Mum's birthday. What a treat it was. We all left absolutely stuffed. We were served a lovely selection of sandwiches, fancy pieces, scones as well as mozerella sticks, chicken fillets and battered sausages. The staff were all very attentive and regularly checked on us as well as refilling our teapot. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and after such an enjoyable tea we would be more than happy to visit again. Would definitely recommend.

Was expecting delicious crispy battered fish, what we received very ordinary, could buy this quality from any chip shop anywhere.

Never had such a thin slice of fish from a fish and chip shop in all of my 53 years! What made it worse was watching a PR video on the TV at the serving counter saying they only use fresh fish. Whilst staff are going in the freezer and bringing out frozen fish filets from cardboard boxes! And battering the filets whilst rigid frozen! Not thawing the fish out first. Surely this is goes against Trading Standards rulings when you are advertising 'Fresh Fish' Daily!!!! I was in Gateshead last week, and for £1.50 less I got twice as much! Even in Buchanhaven at Radaryou get twice as much fish. Such shameful portions and not fresh fish as they blatantly advertise! Was also horrified to see their skippers are now raping Africa's seas in Namibia! No truths or morals. Shocking!

Had a lovely experience when we visited this lovely chip shop / Zanre cafe , the staff were lovely the shop was spotless lovely displayed and arranged matching furniture cutlery and crockery the food was lovely the toilets all spotless can not fault this place will definitely be returning in the very near future would highly recommend thank you for a lovely experience craig, jackie and Anthony .xxx

The Mintlaw Chipper never ceases to delight with all food freshly prepared as you wait. The clever chrome rail directs you to join the queue and take your turn in line for ordering. The numbered receipts ensure everyone gets their own order at collection point. Ample parking at the rear of the building through a narrow lane to the side of the building, though sadly too many drivers ignore this and just pull up on the busy street causing an obstruction at peak times. Newly refurbished and extended dinning area looks very appealing and small outdoor seating at front for summer time.

Good all round service and food.... some of the food had been precooked making it a bit dry... but it was a busy time

Had breakfast here on Sunday 7th Oct. first class full English breakfast, well cooked and very friendly service. Well worth a visit and value for money.

As a group of 11 (adults and children) we enjoyed a range of chip shop food. It was delivered in a timely manner and is good sized portions. Staff were pleasant and attentive.

First class service, in very pleasant surroundings. Wide range of food on offer from soup & sandwich to full chip shop menu. Freshly cooked food.

Had lunch here a few weeks ago. Five of us in total. There is a fairly good variety on the menu, but there were 2 types of soup on that day, and we all had soup. Both kinds, chicken and rice and a lovely lentil soup. They were both thick and delicious and lovely bread to go with it also. Had coffee afterwards and all very enjoyable it was. Would recommend for lunch.

Was going to sit in cafe for fish and chips but screaming kids playing in play area with 2 mothers sitting with a cup of tea using the place as a nursery put us off. Had takeaway instead, fish and chips, how they can serve fish and chip takeaway like warm is beyond me chips barely warm and limp, fish was small although supposedly standard size, worse thing though was gluey batter, just not cooked properly, oil at too low temperature! Just horrible!

I discovered by chance this venue when planning a car outing with friends and searching for a cafe in the Mintlaw area and then finding Trip Advisor reports of Mintlaw Chipper which seemed very favourable.

Run of the mill chippie, but still very good. Pies are 👌 Easy to collect and go if travelling through Mintlaw or sit in. Car park available at the back

Really didn't enjoy our supper from here. Chips were full of black eyes from bad peeling. Batter was chewy rather than crunchy. An expensive disappointment I won't be repeating.

we were last there on Mothers day and it was excellent the tea's sandwiches and fancy piece's and scones were delish what the kids got was amazing really enjoyed it

Freshly prepared fish meal that was amazingly quickly and very tasty. Chips were real fish shop chips and fish had just the right amount of batter. Definitely will be coming again.

1st time in the new dinner, I think it was very expensive for lunch with 2 fish suppers, chicken burger & 3 bottles of pop.

Went here for lunch reasonable menu. We took the soup for a starter it was far to thick the spoon would have almost stood up in the bowl. The mains are normal chip shop dishes, the staff were friendly unsure whether we’ll be back or not.

Tried this newly refurbished cafe today staff was very pleasant and helpful and the fish and chips were beautiful also loads of things to choose from on menu

Café Zanre is a lovely addition to the award-winning Mintlaw Chipper that shares the space. A group of chums had booked the festive afternoon tea, for a bit of a pre-Christmas treat, and what a treat it was!

Had a run to Peterhead and passed Mintlay chipper which now has a lovely cafe/ restaurant attached we had a lovely lunch my soup was excellent chicken and sweet corn which was thick with loads of chicken my husband had their jumbo fish and chips and quality was brilliant we finished off with a home made cake and tea, the quality of food ,decor, surroundings and attention to detail was second to none ,this new cafe will certainly be on our list of regular visits ,

Good food also ice cream very nice , new cafe area which is more private than old cafe. Parking round the back of shop. Staff friendly .

Well we stopped off yesterday at the Mintlaw Chipper on the way home from Aberdeen. My wife phoned in our order on the way home to save us waiting to long as we know that on a Sunday it is quite busy. We all had the fish and chips including my son. That is his favourite meal. The fish was lovely and fresh and the chips were lovely and crispy. Will definitely give this a try again. Keep up the good work Mintlaw Chipper.

This is the second review I've given this place and it just gets better. Immaculate clean cafe with lovely staff and excellent food. Had the afternoon tea earlier and I can't fault anything. Well done to all

Have been before for lunch and it was lovely but was back today for afternoon tea got my daughters birthday and again excellent food and service which was enjoyed by the whole party 10 of us altogether will definitely be back again

Visited the mintlaw chipper/zaniest cafe with family, booked afternoon tea. Honestly it was the best I have ever tasted and value for money!!! Your tea consists of hot tasters, scampi, fish cake and blaggis, the finger sandwiches varies fillings, fancy biscuits and scones jam and cream, tea and coffee was unlimited refills..

What a lovely treat in this new cafe. Visited on Saturday had coffees and cakes which were all divine. Lovely clean, nice surroundings and good service. Would thoroughly recommend.

I had a baked potato with cheese and beans but the beans were hard and crunchy but we also had a fish supper and haggis supper and those were good.

Visited here during their opening week. Very impressed with the quality of the food and nice to see that the boss was around to oversee things. An asset to Mintlaw.

This was the first day of the new cafe!! The service was good and most importantly the food was really good!! As from the photo i had the jumbo haddock with lots of their famous soecial sauce!!

Have been here a lot over the years and and enjoyed every time until my latest visit. Chips soggy in dirty oil and burger dripping in oil . Absolutely disgusting:(

Went out to the new cafe which is added on to the chip shop for our lunch lovely place lovely food fast efficient service and lovely staff food enjoyed by the whole family

Just had 4 fish suppers and if it wasn't for the fact that we had guests and haven't eaten all day I would have taken the meals back. The fish batter was dark brown and it had black bits all over it. As a result the fish was dry and had no taste.

Been on a few occasions and never had any complaints. Always really good standard but unfortunately I couldn't say the same about tonight's visit. Now the shop might of been busy, but I felt that orders were bring rushed and the result in my case was a very soggy king rib and not quite cooked chips. Far too much batter on the king rib which was still almost raw on the inside. Disappointing

Never had a bad meal here. Always ready on time if i call before hand. Fish and chips are best in the area. However you pay for the privelage of it being the only chip shop in the area. Easy parking soo worth a visit

Quick service. Good menu. Tasty fish supper. Pleasant staff. Free parking. Also sell tubs of yummy looking ice cream. Would go again.

We went in for our lunch and we're more than happy the fish was cooked to perfection as was my wife's scampi! The chips were just as you would expect from a great chip shop!Can't wait for the restaurant to reopen after it's refurb!

Very clean, Staff very pleasant and quality of food exceptional. Do not be fooled by the name, this is no ordinary chip shop. This is how all food takeaways should be like. Try it you'll not regret it!

We have visited on many occasions and seldom been disappointed. They have a wide selection of food here and freshly cooked.

Well overpriced for what we received. Chips tasted awful and we're tiny little crunchy things Batter on the fish and sausage was soggy an undercooked.This used to be a brilliant chip shop when it was Zanres. It's fell very far indeed.There are at least 5 chip shops serving up better fare in Peterhead at about 25% less.Be very ashamed. We will not be back.

this is the worst chip shop i have ever been to the food was horrific the service was ok but the person in charge was shouting at everybody she was in a terrible mood and one if the girls looked very upset by her also its very expensive definitely stay away.

The food was disgusting went in on 12/09/16 and the lines were massive u cook so slow and went i go in about 10 minutes later there's still a huge flipping line sort this out or u will lose a lot of customers i will never return to this horrible place pfft. The servers were very nice indeed its just the fact the place has massive lines and terrible cooks will NOT RETURN . !!! DONT COME HERE

We had a few can only share a medium fish supper as it is so big. Tried their Mary land too and great

Mintlaw chipper produce one of the best chipper meals and the reason for not getting full marks is some of the staff make you feel as welcome as a fart in a space suit.

Teatime on a Sunday - busy chipper. We had quite a wait before placing our order. The ordering process is efficient, they take cash or card and you are given a receipt with your order number. They try and serve people in order number. When your order number is called out you say whether you want salt and/or vinegar, the food is wrapped and popped into your bag (which you should take with you and save 5p). There are seating areas inside and out for you to sit and eat your meal.Good range of food options, good kids menu, good range of cold drinks, limited selection of the excellent Bicoccheis icecream.

I can't remember the exact date i visited The Mintlaw Chipper, it was around 8 O'clock ish. But the pans in the resteraunt seemed to have been broken / faulty at the time. The place was absolutely thronged. I was qued at the till to order my food for some time, as was many others, which was completely understandable due to the circumstances. However when a young girl, brown hair, glasses, petite finally got round to taking my order the attitude of her and the way she spoke to many of the customers was an absolutely disgrace, had a very raw face on her and looked like she'd rather be anywhere but there, Spoke to every customer before and after me like dirt!!! After my order was taken i and many others waited for our number to be called out so we could collect our food and go home. Some of the employees putting out the orders also had a very raw attitude on them, for example a very tall girl, in her early 20's brown hair had a very bad attitude about her and stormed everywhere she went. I waited roughly quater of an hour for my food to be cooked and my number to be called out. Luckily for me i had gotten a very sweet young girl, brown hair, had quite alot of makeup on, short. She offered me and every other customer she had dealt with free icecream due to the inconvenience and long wait, which i could only assume came out of her wages. All and all the food was cooked to perfection, absolutely lovely fish. Athough my wait was rediculous i will definitely catch myself going back.

Me & my husband went to the Mintlaw chippy last week & the food was lovely & the service was very quick.Portions were very generous too

Went in for some chips today (23rd June) and the whole place was crawling with flies! Flies on the surfaces, condiments, wrapping etc. Ordered chips but left after being attacked over and over...disgusting!

We stopped here on our journey to our holiday cottage after a long trip. Food was fresh and excellent quality. Service was efficient and polite. Will defy go again before leaving to travel home again. Jumbo fish suppers all round!

Always made to order so you may be required to wait. Be patient, you won't be disappointed. Fish suppers are excellent and portions are generous. Good value for money. Friendly staff. Spotlessly clean

After phoning in an order to be collected at 5.20pm I arrived in good time to find it not ready until 5.45pm which in itself is not the end of the world but leaves me wondering what's the point of being able to place orders in advance if it makes no difference whatsoever to waiting or collection time? Most annoyingly though was when we got back home we discovered that the order was completely wrong.suppers missing and items muddled up ! And that was AFTER id asked the girl on the phone to repeat back to me what i had asked for.A wasted 15 mile round trip and a family of disappointed kids! Over priced and over cooked.will not return.

We have stopped here plenty of times over the years for chip suppers on the way home from football or golf. Always quick to be served and very tasty.

Very poor show!! I ordered 3 fish suppers all contained tiny rock hard chips, our fish was tasteless with soggy batter and looked rank! The girls behind the counter looked like they would rather be anywhere else than at work. We won't be back and will be paying petrol to go elsewhere for a decent supper.

What can I say about this chip shop. Most chip shops are just that "chip shops". The food on offer is varied and fresh. Fish and shellfish fresh from Peterhead Fish market, probably caught that day. Well cooked and fairly priced; considering the fact that I'm old enough to remember fish and chips for 1s 6d (One shilling and six pence), about 12 1/2 pence, that's not bad. They provide ice cream of good taste and flavour. Just to entice you more. Parking is not always readily available but, I guess, that's what happens with a favoured chippy. Ideal for an occasion treat. Enjoy.

Fish and chips were so yummy. The fish was light and cooked beautifully. Staff were lovely and friendly. We'll be coming again.

Hi after after waiting half an hour to get our food, they had taking the order wrong, and once we finally got our food it was all dried out and over cooked, we had been really looking forward to our meal just to be let down. This is the 2nd this has happened, will not go back again.

I love this chipper as the fish and chips are go good - I've never had a fish supper from there that's dry or burnt as you do in other chippers near where I live.The service is really good and I like the organisation of how you queue behind the wee barrier then move on and they shout your number instead of shouting your order which gets confusing. It is maybe a little bit on the expensive side as the large haddock is over a fiver and then you add the chips price on after which brings it up to over £7 for a large supper. It is worth it though as the fish is so good as are the chips.

Recommended by a B&B owner in Cruden Bay. A bit of a drive after a long day of golf (tough duty), but on his recommendation, the large haddock - extra crispy really hit the spot!Light tasty batter, not greasy, and a crazy amount of chips

Got chippy on way home from visiting friend in hospital. Got 2 kids sausage chips 2 fish chips . I had chicken fillets salad. Salad v poor little lettuce 1 slice tomato soggy onions . Side portion coleslaw was lovely. Good food others food was good. Only let down not very hot chips 're fried .

Went in and my baby was asleep in the car. So after I placed my order the women said it ok she can bring out my food to me. Very polite and great customer service. Food was yum too

Was in mint law forvthe days and decided tomget a fish and chip,supper. It was a good choice as the meal was excellent and staff very friend,y. Good carvparkingbarvrear and close to village centre Will certainly return again

In days gone by you could drop into a chippy and get a quick take away in this place you wait for everything it could be said that you are getting fresh food or on the other hand you might say they dont want to see anything they cook not being eaten (loss of profit) when it arrives its ok could do with perhaps not counting the chips as the portions are sparse

Visited this chippy a few times while staying local. First time I got a fish supper, the fish was so fresh it was fantastic and the chips where aswell. The other time I got a steak wrap and it was packed with proper steak not cheap frying steak. I got chatting to the owner and they took me to show me that the chips are peeled and cut daily. Fresh food is def the word that fits here. The staff are very friendly and the server was fantastic. If passing through I would highly recommend calling in and after reading a comment below about frozen fish and reheated chips I would laugh and disagree. The home made chips could not be reheated.

We stopped here on our way through the town for some fish and chips for tea. It was very busy which was a good sign, you order at one end of the counter and pick your order up at the other end of the counter. The staff were pleasant and helpful and the fish and chips when we finally got them were fresh and tasty. A great little fish and chip shop.

I arrived here as a stop off on my way home from a long trip as was starving. Had macaroni pie and chips. Arrived at my table very quickly, great value, great service and delicious. It was very busy, so obviously popular, but I was still served quickly, they have a really good organisation of the process.

Sick of this chipper, last 4 times has been bad and that's spaced over a year! Not going back now. Frozen fish and reheated chips! Yuk!

There is the usual long menu of available items but if you stick with the fish and chips you won't go wrong. Well cooked with plenty of flavour - what more do you want from a fish supper!

Was very impressed with our fish suppers last week, fish was fresh and cooked to perfection, batter nice and crisp and wasn't greasy. Only complaint would be that chips seemed a little stodgy. Would definitely go back next time we're in Mintlaw.

Popped in at about 6.30pm tonight and it was rather busy. In fact the busiest I had ever seen the place to be. Ordered two jumbo fish and chips and the gorgeous special sauce. Had quite a wait, and started worrying when you are watching other peoples fish coming out rather curled up. One woman next to us appeared to be struggling to cut her fish with a knife. When we eventually got our order, ours weren't curled, so I thought thank goodness for that. Really shouldn't have thought that as the fish was horrible. I gave a taste to my son as I couldn't work out what the problem was. He said it was terrible. The batter was hard, and very dark with even darker patches on it. I have attached a photo of the dark patches. And it tasted way way overcooked. My son said he thought it was dry at the same time as being greasy. We thought that it looked as though the fat had been to high in temperature. A fish should look like fish when you open the batter up. Inside this looked as though it was an old dried out fish. The chips were also poor, I had about 6. They are now sitting waiting for tomorrow when I will give them to the dog for his lunch. What a total waste of £14+. I will never go back there again. I was desperate for something quick, and have thrown £14 away on these. It is hard earned money that has been wasted. And to get poor fish and chips just a few miles away from Peterhead is a disgrace.

Had a carry out of fish and chips, big portions all lovely and fresh cooked. Fish a bit on the small side and not as tasty as what I am used to where I live (further down the coast) reasonable priced.
