Really quite bad experience culminating in paying restaurant prices for wines that are quite clearly bought from the local shop or supermarket!! How can an establishment expect members of the public to folk out almost £20 for a bottle of wine that cost no more that £5, literally around the corner!!

We visited The Mill Wheel for a family meal. We arrived and the downstairs bar to be greeted by the staff who were attentive straight away and directed us to our table upstairs. Once we were seated they couldn’t have done enough for us. Raven , the new manager of The Mill Wheel clearly has the pub running right as his staff were astonishing! We were asked for drinks after we were seated which came with quick service , we were run through the specials before ordering our food and nothing was too much to ask for when ordering food and asking for starters to come with mains for a picky bits option! Once the food came we were just blown away, everything was steaming hot, clearly made homemade and certainly made with love, compliments to the chef. I had the pan-seared sea bass and my partner had the pie of the day. The pie had a lovely puff pastry lid with filling that simply melts in your mouth😍 . The sea bass was the best i’ve had in the UK!! You could tell how fresh it was and the skill of cooking it was more than impressive , it had the perfect crisp whilst withholding such amazing flavour. After eating, we were offered desserts , but we were too full after the generous portion sizes haha! I can confidently say that this place will be our new regular, the food was impeccable, the service was nothing short of outstanding and the drinks were excellent, whilst being a rustic pub with an amazing asset of a working Mill Wheel, they remain to price reasonably and appreciate each and every customer that visits. If you haven’t been i’d highly recommend paying a visit to this stunning pub and restaurant!

The food was spot on!! I had the mill wheel burger (cooked to perfection!) It came with chips, onion rings and coleslaw! The chips were hot and fresh you could really tell that all the food was home made and really prepared with care and attention 😋 The staff were exceptional and really happy to help! Really attentive too! I was drinking Thatchers which was cold and fresh! My friends were drinking Guinness and m”Madri which were also highly praised (best Guinness in the area) WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

If I am honest the food was terrible. I came with my family and it was a nightmare! The food was cold. The hospitality was shocking and the way the chef spoke to me was atrocious.

We celebrated my father-in-law’s 80th birthday at The Mill Wheel in Hartshorne last night, and it was a delightful experience. Although we hadn’t specified that we needed dog-friendly seating and disabled access—assuming all bookings were downstairs, which we knew was pet-friendly—the staff quickly stepped in to help. They rearranged the downstairs area without any fuss, ensuring we could all dine together comfortably. We had pre-ordered our meals, and I’m happy to report that every dish was absolutely delicious. It’s not often that we finish every plate, especially with some picky eaters in our group, but there was not a scrap left over! Despite our large party, all the meals arrived at once, which was impressive. The waiting staff struck the perfect balance of being friendly and relaxed while always being available when we needed something. It’s evident that the new management, which took over just a few weeks ago, is doing a fantastic job. For a small local restaurant, The Mill Wheel truly impressed us. We love this place and can’t wait to book again soon. If you’re looking for a relaxed and informal dining experience, I highly recommend it!

Went here as our usual place was full. We noted the place was quiet for a Saturday evening and it was easy to book even though it wasn't needed. When we arrived I had to wait for the 3 girls behind the bar to stop chatting with each other to get acknowledged and served. We sat at our table next to the bar and read the menu drinks came fairly quickly then we ordered. Two meals came out and we expected the waitress just to go back to the kitchen and bring the other two, but there was no sign of anyone, so 15 minutes later we said you'd better eat yours before it gets too cold, eventually we caught someone's attention and said we hadn't had or full order, they apologised and eventually the other dishes arrived, by which time the first two were finished!!! The food was awful i had fish and chips, the chips were like bullets and the fish was dripping in oil like the fryer just wasn't hot enough. The others also said theirs were bad. Although my step daughter wanted dessert i said i am not giving them any more money i'll take you to Tesco. We were charged full price even though they messed up and we said the food was awful, we paid and left and will never go back. Such a shame as it looks a lovely pub when you drive past, but our experience put us off and we'll be staying with the Greyhound Inn from now on.

Dinner with mum. The food was a mixed bag. The starter was alright although the toast was like marble. My pizza wasn't bad at all although something was missing. Mum didn't like hers. I am not sure why maybe the fact it was very heavily covered in tomato paste , I liked that but she didn't....but the food wasn't overpriced and good value. The wine was overpriced though , at £22 and £24 for generic house wines , it's too much. However the real gem in this establishment is Jemma. She is absolutely amazing. Friendly , genuine ,polite and professional. She really did sparkle . An absolute credit to her team and would be an asset in any food and drink venue.

We were greeted by a friendly lady who took our order and brought our drinks quickly Sadly this is where the good service ended Me and my son went upstairs to the carvery and was left waiting there for 5 minutes whilst the 2 waitresses were taking at the bar I went over and asked for someone to serve the carvery they came out and I asked where half the food was. No mash No cauliflower cheese no cabbage- all advertised on the menu Apparently they could make some mash in 25 minutes although this never materialised We went back and waited downstairs for half an hour and went we went back up they had produced some cabbage and some cauliflower with cheese sprinkled on it which I guess was the improvised cauliflower cheese. There was a few roasters absolutely swimming in butter By the time my husband came up for his carvery there was no roasters either so he ate a carb free carvery! The lady who we initially complained to was not around when we came to pay and even though I complained to the person taking my payment all I for was sorry we have a new chef The man in front of me was complaining too about waiting over an hour for a burger All in all waste of a couple of hours and although this used to be nice I don’t think I will come back any time soon

Unfortunately another Public house that should stick to selling drinks and not food but whilst I appreciate that they are trying to survive, their menu is exaggeratingly ambitious compared to the reality of what they serve up, home cooked chips? yes they might have been on Friday..... but today is Sunday! which is fine if you enjoy chewy chips, but unfortunately I am dentally challenged and the Beer battered fish; i have had beer battered fish from a restaurant that knows how to make the batter and cook it right, unfortunately for me ....their cook doesn't, it was not good, but credit where credit is due, you have managed to rip another customer off :-( Congrats.

Went to the Millwheel for Sunday lunch carvery which was really good, the meat was tender with a good choice of vegetables cooked just right, so can't fault the meal. The only downside was that I requested an accessible table for my 90 year old Mum, but we were told the table was upstairs so she had to struggle with a walker to get up the stairs. The person behind the bar didn't seem interested in helping or offering a table downstairs so I would recommend for the food but not if you are expecting an easily accessible dining room for wheelchair users or anyone who struggles with stairs.

Having seen the lunch menu on their websites we thought we’d go and try it as it looked really good. When we asked about it we were told they don’t serve it on a Saturday. Nowhere in their website or on the menu does it say this. If you are not going to serve the lunch menu you advertise on a certain day, surely it would be a good idea to put this restriction on the menu or your website.

Upon Entering we were greeted with all smiles, from a young waitress who clearly has more years expierance then her age would suggest! Very accomodating and friendly. The atmposhere is cozy and warm, with a true rustic comptempory feel. Boasting of large fire place and sofa seating. We sat at a table, and the drink and food menus came in quick. I had ordered the curry of the day, being Tikka masala, this came with home made mango chuckney nan bread and a popadom. It was really nice, and plentiful, but on the adverage side. My partner had a cheese stone baked pizza, which looked clay oven cooked. Again really nice and rustic. Prices can range from cheap eats to posh nosh, espesically on the drinks, anywhere from £2.50 to over £100 for the right champaign or other drinks from unique countries. Really nice clean cut menu, nice bar, nice atmosphere good food, and lovely welcoming staff. Prices for everyone. Thank you for having us.

We went here for a friends gathering and at first we thought the pub looked nice and was at a lovely location, which it is. However, the food options for vegetarians isn’t great, it seems like everything was to do with mushrooms. Anyway, I asked for the portobello mushrooms and garlic as a starter and the Chevre pizza as the main. The starter was lovely, but the pizza was so greasy, it was awful. None of the people who ordered pizzas within the group could finish them. We also found that the staff (especially a young girl) behind the bar weren’t particularly friendly. Unfortunately, we don’t think we’d be coming back.

Tables didn't look like they had been cleaned and felt sticky. Caddies left on tables had one knife in, no napkins and barely any sauce, with loose grains of salt or sugar all in the bottom which appears unclean. Meals ordered which included mushrooms but just came without and had to ask for them. Had to ask for additional sauces as none in the caddies. Didn't feel like much attention had been paid to detail and just felt poorly managed in that sense. Food was okay, but nothing special. Underwhelmed overall.

Came for early birthday lunch Thursday 1/7/21 @ 13.30. A friend and her daughter's treat for me. Good report from their family AND I did try to visit April but only re-opened May apparently with a few changes. Good stuff 1st....shared starter of Prawn pil pil and delicious Camenbert, Mains a fillet steak and steak pie again delicious, mine a gammon cooked as I like, not over done, moist and HUGE! Doggy bagged - happy daxi's! The accompaniments appropriate. All served nice and hot and generous. Too generous, we WERE full! A well stocked bar and Bailey's coffee to finish, all in all, good. Not so good...WAS on Gourmet which gave 25% discount off a bill for 2 people....not now, so bill was quite hefty. Just over £100.00. That 25% of 2/3rds would have made a reduction of around £16.00, but not to be. A neither/nor...very quiet, only two other diners there, a bonus for speed of service but??? That may be a Gourmet consequence or just mid week quiet. So, just to finish, I would visit again, the food, menu choice, service and ambience good.

Went here for an evening meal before going on holiday. Starters arrived, not bad but my scallops were clearly frozen ones. The issues started with main course. Advised special was a pie, which we both selected. Then advised halfway through starters main course no longer available. Both selected other options and waited. After quite a while noticed other later arrivals receiving starters and mains. Raised issue and asked if mains had arrived, clearly by looking at our table with knives and forks not used this would have been obvious. As we were disappointed that we couldn’t have our first choice and then realising we had been forgotten as we had been waiting 45 minutes so decided to forego mains and leave, our evening out was already spoiled beyond anything to make it better. Bill arrived, no offer of any compensation and attitude was apathetic at best. Will never go here again.

We booked in at the Mill Wheel on Saturday 29/05/21 for a birthday celebration. First impressions were good, it has recently been refurbished and there was a good amount od space between tables in the restaurant. There was a nice balance of dishes on the menu, albeit a little pricey, and the cocktail menu looked interesting - so far so good. And here the trouble began - we waited at least 10 minutes before menus were brought and a drinks order taken. This carried on throughout the evening - we were boked in at 7:30 and left at 9:45 having only eaten one course! When the food was finally served, only 5 meals of the 6 were brought out. We were told that the 6th meal (a burger) would be out in "a few minutes". We waited 15 minutes for the mal to arrive. We couldn't understand it, another person in our party had also ordered the burger which came with the rest of the food - why didn't they cook both together? To be fair, the price of the meal as taken off the bill and the individual was offered a free drink, but we would have much preferred the meal to be served with the rest of the food, it put a downer on the whole evening after that.We would have liked dessert, but just couldn't be bothered to wait any longer. We actually bought dessert at the supermarket and ate it at home in the end! We sat for what felt like an eternity with finished plates in front of us and watched young waiting staff clear empty tables rather than attend to the customers who were still there! The food itself was also very disappointing for the price, particularly the steaks. £25 for a small, poorly cooked fillet was steep to say the least - I have cooked better steaks from the supermarket myself. Much improvement is needed if are to be tempted back, which is such a shame as we are local and want to support local businesses.

My wife telephoned 12 restaurants in our locality, before managing to obtain a booking at the Mill Wheel, which was probably some kind of omen. When we arrived, the establishment was less than 50% occupied by customers, and we were taken to a table upstairs that had not been cleaned, and had an empty bottle and glass on it and detritus left over from someone eating. The waitress wiped half of the table and removed the used glass and bottle. As far as I am aware, restaurants should still be taking precautions against the spread of Covid-19 but there was no evidence in the restaurant that this was the case, other than the waitresses wearing masks and having to wear a mask until we were seated. There was no hand sanitizer when entering the restaurant. In other restaurants that we have used during the pandemic, the Covid precautions have been exemplary, with the tables being completely empty, and the tables and chairs sanitized between each use.The cutlery, salt, pepper, candles and menus are then brought to your table after they have been sanitised, with the menus printed on paper and disposable. But at the Mill Wheel, it was like covid had never happened with the table cluttered with paraphernalia that the previous occupants most likely handled and menus coated in plastic, that had not been sanitised. We even watched a waitress, filling the cutlery tray, drop cutlery onto the floor, and then pick it up and put it into the trayA friend had telephoned the restaurant ahead of us to purchase a bottle of Chablis, but no one could be bothered to answer the telephone, even though when we walked in, there were three waitresses at the back of the bar appearing to chat to each other. We sat down and ordered a bottle of Chablis, and after a while the waitress arrived with a bottle of Chardonnay, so she had to make another return trip to the cellar. We were given a menu by another waitress and told there was no Gin and Juniper Cured Salmon remaining as a starter so we ordered an Antipasti Sharer for a Starter and asked for Pan Roasted Lamb Rump for the main course, but we were told that this was unavailable, so we ordered Ale Battered Haddock and a 10oz Ribeye Steak. After a while, the Sharing Antipasti arrived, which was totally inadequate and a rip-off. The Antipasti Sharer consisted of: -1 Slice of Bresaola2 Small slices of Parma Ham4 Slices of Salami1 portion of Buffalo Mozzarella1 Honey Roast Fig1 small ramekin of Vegetable Escabeche (Sliced carrots, cucumber and onion)1 small ramekin of Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar6 portions of bread. There were other items missing, that where on the menu, such as Coppa, Chorizo, Marinated Olives and Stuffed Romano Peppers, but I do not think that they would have added much to the paucity of the portions. This cost £16.95 for a miserable portion that could have been purchase at a supermarket for less than £3, and is available in very large portions in other restaurants, such as Pinocchio in Burton on Trent at £13.95.My main course was the steak, which I ordered Blue, and came with two Portobello Mushroom caps and a small portion of "Pub Chips"My steak was freezing cold in the centre and appeared as though it had not been seared or grilled on each side, there was no Confit Tomato or Persillade Dressing as per the menu, the mushrooms seemed as though they had been cooked in a deep fryer and tasted as though they had been dipped in salt, and the chips tasted of fish. The fish appeared vey unappetising, was too large for the plate, and would have been better served on an oval plate. The chips were over cooked and we could have obtained better from our local fish and chip shop. The entire meal cost £86.90, which was a total waste of money and a big disappointment where we could have had really excellent meals for that money at the likes of Pascals or 99 Station Street.

Haven’t been to the Mill Wheel in years, but lovely to see it’s been newly renovated! Food was really good and reasonably priced. Great choice on the menu too!! Very friendly staff. Service was a bit slow but that was expected as it’s only just opened up since the lockdown. Overall, really enjoyable evening- thanks!!

We are locals and had dinner on the first evening possible. I am happy to report that things are back on track at The Mill Wheel after a wobble between lockdowns. It finally looks like someone has taken hold of the place and given it a good shaking. The extensions upstairs and downstairs look lovely; the seating is vastly improved; and the decor is pared back and simple. We tried the pan fried cod, saffron potatoes, veloute, shallot bhaji and greens which was beautifully executed and the fish & chips-also very good indeed with a generous portion of haddock with thin batter and proper crispy chips. We then had the dark choc delice and the pina colada panna cotta, both of which were top restaurant standard in taste and presentation. Prices are not cheap, but this is not standard pub grub. Dan gave me great advice on gin selections and I enjoyed something a bit different. We found an enthusiastic welcome and will be back very soon.

This is a warm and welcoming pub with a fully restored mill wheel which is completely hypnotic. Cosy log fire was lit when we arrived and although the lunch menu is quite limited, there is something for everyone and it is very good value. The fish and chips is huge and just £8.95, two would have been more than enough for three of us! Lovely ice cream and a very good pint of bass, great service and great value!

It was my friends 21st so we booked in advance to have some dinner. Food is a bit on the pricey side for a pub however all food is hand cooked, seasoned and very very good quality- especially the meats which I now want to come back and try! The drinks were cheap compared to the price of the food so made the experience worth awhile! The host also came over very often and checked we were okay and doing well with our drinks so service was excellent! Overall very very good - and TOP TIP Wednesday Is 2 for 1 pizza!!!!!

I would give the food a 3 star but the staff were working really hard so I’ve given the overall experience 4.The creamy mushroom starter was lovely but the rest of the food was just mediocre - sirloin steak at £20 is well overpriced when the steak was just a piece we could have cooked at home, cooked well inside but looked very pale on the outside, nothing special & the chips were soggy and undercooked. The pizzas were nice but very greasy, it was literally dripping off.The burger was nice but again chips were undercooked and soggy.Desserts were good.Disappointed as we live around the corner and were hoping for great things as it’s been closed for so long.Lovely to see the wheel working again and it’s nice inside so perhaps teething problems and we’ll give it another go in a few months.

We were driving past this place yesterday and decided to stop off for Sunday LunchI ordered the beef and my daughter had the chicken we ordered the regular size meals as none of us have a huge appetite just what I would call a standard appetite ... Hence the standard dinner ordered well when the meals came I was surprised how small they were the plate that they were served on can only be described as a side plate the roast beef had been cut that thin it looked like it came out of a pack of wafer thin ham ... served with 3 new potato sized roasties The whole meal was bland and tasteless - Would not return

Was in the area with a friend and wanted home nice pub grub. Got here and the place was empty, not a good sign on a sunny Saturday after pay day. However, the decor was good and things seemed clean. Toilets were clean but no hand towels left in dispenser and hand dryer didn’t work. So we proceeded to order some drinks however I asked for orange juice and lemonade and got squash and my friend got a pink gin with a tiny offering of lemonade. Very limited menu and so we stuck with the safe option and both went for a burger. Very plain burger and so took the option to add cheese bacon and AN onion ring for £2 - yes we thought this was a typo however no it was right, we got one onion ring. Food came and the salad was brown and gone over and I’ve had better beef patties from a supermarket. All in all food was ok but it was weatherspoons quality at country pub prices. There are far better pubs around in the local area I’m afraid

After visiting The Mill Wheel 5years ago and having a really great meal we decided to take family and revisit. What a change, the place is in need of decoration & new furniture, tables were sticky and chairs most uncomfortable. The menus are so faded you can barely read them, also very poor choice if food. More like the things you would cook at home.We ordered pie with the thought it would be a slice from a home baked fresh pie but sadly not. Instead it was a round individual pie with a tiny bit of mash and frozen peas. The steak in the pie was tough as old boot and more thick pastry than filling. For pudding it was bread and butter pie, which was nice enough but cold, served with microwaved warm custard. No cooking involved at this place. On the dessert menu there was apple crumble but only served on a Sunday!!We were embarrassed to take our family there. Will not return, can do better myself and I'm not a chef.Complete waste of money and so disappointed.R Edson19/2019

We were in the area and looking for some tasty pub grub but sadly the food here was a bit lacking. The pub itself has lovely decor and the staff were all friendly and welcoming but the food for me was pretty basic, the website described rustic chips what we actually received were frozen chips. I ordered the pie which I found pretty bland, the kids meals were a decent portion size but the sausages were not kiddie type sausages (they were fat pink sausages)so my picky eater wouldn’t eat them. They do offer a selection of pizzas and garlic breads my daughter had the garlic bread and it was good, by far the best tasting thing we ordered.

My wife had an equally outstanding tomatoe rissoto. We shared a gluten free strawberry and rhubarb cheese cake-excellent.The staff were attentive and helpful and the surroundings very rustic with the mill wheel in situ for viewing.Well worth another visit.

After the second visit to the mill wheel in 2 months the food was still extremely poor. The salmon was cold and rubbery, the turkey dinner was like a frozen microwave meal and the “mash” was artificial smash !!,,, They are charging restaurant prices but serving cheap pub food ,either that or the chef has very little experience. The last time I went ,the Caesar salad consisted of lettuce with a Parmesan dressing on and a slice of bread cut into cubes on the top. The older woman running it ,not sure if she’s the manager or owner, takes great offense to any complaint but the young staff working there are all lovely.

I ate here about a year ago and the food was great. Unfortunately it wasn't today. Initially it was amusing - the menu showed that the starters consisted of a vegetable soup, with a bread roll and butter, whilst the vegan option was the same but without the butter! Clearly not much effort was expanded for vegans and as it turned out, not for anyone else either!

My husband brought me here for my birthday meal as we had eaten here last year and it was excellent. However, this time it was really disappointing. The portions were so small that we went home and cooked some supper. My husband had the lamb soi which comprised 3 pieces of lamb bone on a bed of quinoa. There was barely any meat on the bone and the portion size was smaller than most other restaurants’ starters. I had the Thai chicken curry which was bland and comprised barely any rice. I could see my husbands displeasure but because this was a birthday meal, he did not want to make a fuss for fear of spoiling the occasion. It was really expensive for the amount of food presented. So we paid quickly and left and sadly won’t be returning which is a real shame being as it is so local to us. We did complain directly to the restaurant but they didn’t even have the courtesy of acknowledging the complaint let alone responding to it.

Visited with a group of friends on a Saturday evening, the staff are very friendly and accommodating, but for me the food was nothing more than average. Starters seemed quite expensive to me for what they were, a few mussels and half a slice of rustic bread for just under £6, the same for a few chicken wings. Steak and chips £17. The menu is varied and was quite appealing but I won't be rushing back.

Visited for the first time today for Sunday lunch. The entrance was dirty and paint work needed a good scrub. We were taken to a table in a near empty restaurant that was located by the staff door with constant traffic in and out. The two roast beef dinners arrived quickly with a generous portion of beef which was cooked well and tasty but the Yorkshire puddings were black! The vegetables were cool and the packet cheese sauce on the cauliflower was revolting. Horseradish sauce was supplied in sachets. We got an apology for the Yorkshires but these were not replaced. The staff were friendly and the service ok but such a shame as this could be a really nice venue. Sadly we will not be returning and hope this review helps the owners/ managers improve their offering and customer experience.
