The Market House Inn in Mendip

We booked for the rugby so we were going to be there for a long time. All was going well Until the manager opened the front doors apparently as it’s hot. We told her as we were sat by front door it was cold she said well everyone is hot. My friend after half hour shut the door as us and the table behind we’re shivering. Then the manager in charge opened the door back up and aggressively told us others were hot I said but we’re all cold she didn’t care. We decided to leave not order food and more drinks left before the England game and my friend went and asked to speak to manager, this lady said she was and called my friend aggressive which she wasn’t just wanted to make a complaint about the attitude. We left and won’t be back rubbish customer service and an aggressive manager

We deliberately attended to watch the rugby, as advertised the place to go to watch sport. We were greeted with the most unfriendly ‘manager’ I have ever experienced. Half way through the match, opened the door to the pub due to being to ‘hot’. So if you want to be freezed to death defo the place to visits! Also if you want to be terrified by the scary looking ‘manager’ please visit, she’s a delight! Especially when making a complaint about her. I’ve never experienced any thing like it, there was no speaking to her, even when I tried to explain we plus other tables were cold. Good luck to other drinking there, she’s a pleasure 🙄

This was on a normal wednesday afternoon. No school holidays and at a very quiet time if day. Service ok food not bad. Sat there for about an hour and a half and nobody came to collect the dirty plates despite the pub not having very few customers.

We got off the motorway for a quick bite to eat and found this place in the town. Great value for money. Steak was cooked to perfection. Staff was lovely, places was very clean.

Only half the order arrived. Not a massive issue as appreciate mistakes happen. However, when the bar staff were informed they blamed our group for using the mobile app instead of going to the bar to order. They were very rude and said they’d bring the rest out when they have time. How long does it take to pour a soft drink? Half an hour later they still didn’t bring over the missing food or soft drinks. We had to argue to get a refund on the items they did not bring out as the rest of the group had finished eating/drinking. Overall an awful experience and the owner really needs to reconsider who they employ / send them to basic customer service training!

I always come in here for food and to meet friends when I'm in town in the day, I've been in here in the evening and found it to always be friendly and groovy when there's live music. Anna at the bar is always friendly and chatty

Good food, good service and football on TV

I am absolutely disgusted at the poor - well non- existent customer service this establishment has shown. I booked a room in December, which I was unable to attend, due to an accident. I contacted the hotel several times to transfer the booking. None of my calls or emails were replied to. I also contacted Booking.com (whom I booked it through) they were also unsuccessful at contacting them, despite several phone calls. Furthermore, another establishment who manages bookings for them was also unable to contact them - despite several attempts. I would NOT recommend booking anything with them, as returned communication, is obviously something this establishment does NOT consider to be important.

Staff super friendly, bar clean and tidy, great atmosphere but let down by the food. I looked at the food gallery before we went and was eagerly waiting arrival of our meals. I ordered a chip shop platter and although nicely presented, was served a frozen piece of packet fish with fries - not chips as was on the photos. The battered sausage had no appeal at all, the batter was aenemic and only on half the sausage, the peas were hard and the bread was stale with no butter. My husband had the scampi and was happy with his. The staff didn’t mention the January deal they had on so was a little miffed as I would have had just fish and chips and this would have saved us £8.00. We travel to Glastonbury quite often but unfortunately we won’t be back here again.

Typical British free house in Glastonbury. The rooms are little but clean and comfortable. Food and atmosphere were ok, great selection of ales too.

Went in for drinks and as a pub it was a pretty poor service. The guy behind the bar had to go and ask what ale they had?? Only one which wasn’t that brill anyway. That said they food others were having looked good

Looking for a late breakfast we wandered in. It was empty but not an acknowledgement from the staff. No welcome, no "Take a seat & we'll be with you". No basic hospitality so no custom from us.

Went for dinner with friends staff were friendly and very helpful throughout our visit deserts were lovely

On arrival to check in the pub was very busy with the staff too stretched to give us a proper welcome. We were eventually handed the keys and pointed in the direction of the bedrooms. The room itself was spacious, clean and had a good view of the Abbey ruins and The Tor. The bathroom however was rather awful. No towel rails, no heating of any kind and a cold faux-wood floor. It was freezing cold at 3pm. Through the night it got even colder. It was too cold to contemplate a morning shower and I came home without one. The breakfast was served by a calmer, more polite chap compared to how he had been on our arrival. He had a bit more time for us and was attentive to our needs. To be fair to him, he and his staff were under a lot of pressure to serve some very thirsty customers when we arrived. The bar work took priority over staying guests. The breakfast itself, (Full English), was unremarkable, with some items appearing to have been hanging around a while. We were offered additional tea and toast. We wouldn’t stay here again. At a cost of £114 per night, including breakfast, we would expect a more comfortable bathroom.

Sadly you can't do less than one star. We arrived for our reservation for food only to be told there was no reservation even after I had rang to confirm and showed them the email. The staff were rude and dismissive. Even going so far as to deny they had a booking system. When it is clearly on there web site. Stay clear. Worst pub in Glastonbury

Booked a table for dinner on Saturday 25th November 2 days early. As with an earlier review I've read, the staff were oblivious to any reservation and that there was a booking system. On showing them our email confirmation of said table booking, the manager said "I don't know where you got that from. It's the first I've heard of it." No apology; rude and no attempt to find us a seat or take any order. Avoid at all costs if you expect to eat or receive a modicum of service.

Great breakfasts and lovely staff!! The OH said it was one of the best breakfasts hes had in months, and he was full all day. Will definitly be back here next time we're in Glastonbury!!

Great little breakfast, but lacks atmosphere of a market town pub.

We stayed one night, the bed was comfy , the decor was relaxing, there was a view of the Tor. Staff were relaxed and friendly and the food was excellent

ordered food, first three choices not available! Food wasn’t particularly hot, staff not exactly friendly. Dessert was delivered to the table and walked away, had to be called back and asked to clear the table of plates from the main course. Would not recommend.

The room was nice and the bed was really comfortable. The shower was big, and the towels were massive. There was tea, coffee, biscuits, etc., but unfortunately, there were no cups, so I couldn't have a hot drink. I could have gone downstairs and asked for one, but I had already undressed and showered. The breakfast was lovely and plentiful. There were lots of hot options as well as cereal. I'd stay again.

Overcharged for 4 drinks by bar staff , rectified but not in a friendly way..... rude! Then given wrong drink to which the bar staff jyst shrugged like it was our problem?

Okay, where do I start, first the drinks we ordered came 20 minutes after we ordered them and when the food came after 40 minutes mine was completely wrong. My friend’s food was missing gravy we ordered. We order six drinks and only got 5. The staff were unhelpful and uninterested.

Tuesday 24th. We waited for approximately 50 minutes for our order, which included a burger and a katsu curry chicken, to be served. During this time, we had to endure disruptive children running around the pub. The staff noticed the situation but did not take any action, even though it was clearly bothering guests like us who were seeking a quiet dining experience. We also witnessed a group coming in, but they were discouraged from ordering food, even though the pub was nearly empty by then. There were only a few of us and a few others still waiting for our meals to arrive. The group eventually gave up and had to find food elsewhere. When our food finally arrived, it was mediocre at best. To make matters worse, while we were trying to eat, a group of guys sat right next to us, watching football and making it difficult for us to enjoy our meal. I would not recommend this place and do not plan to go back.

Pity there is no Zero as that should be the option for this ‘pub’. Restaurant is terrible as well… frozen food is standard. Unfriendly unhelpful totally unorganised- despite some young staff trying their best. Glasses pile up everywhere- rude bar lady especially. Not the only person by the look of things from all the comments in previous reviews. I’m a Glastonbury resident and will NOT be back… ever…

Already posted my review on Tripadvisor and sent you an email with my views on your pub and staff. I was really disappointed in the service I received. Very rude staff food was very poor. Will not be returning, so many better pubs in Glastonbury.

This place is classed as a restaurant in Tripadvisor. It is definitely not a restaurant as the food is very poor as we found out last year, some of our party were given a refund. The food took ages to arrive. I would class this place no more than a sports bar. My real gripe was on Friday 6th October. Ten of us, all men aged 50s and 60s went for a drink to the Market House. Some got served, I was at the bar holding my card and waiting to be served. A barman was clearing glass’s off the bar and completely ignoring me. I asked him if I could have 2 pints of lager. He said he couldn’t serve me until his manager gave him permission. Then some jumped up little girl, I assume she was the manager said she had closed the bar until the glasses are cleared, I found her very rude and definitely needs retraining in customer services. At this point I told her to stick her pub where the sun don’t shine and we walked out and went to a decent pub the George and Pilgrim. We were looking for somewhere to watch the rugby on the Saturday we were going to have drinks and food, but saying that with our experience of last year we probably wouldn’t have had food there. It’s there loss, only wish I had read the previous reviews. My advice, steer clear of this pub unless you are easily pleased.

DON'T STAY HERE IF YOU LIKE EARLY NIGHTS Booked to stay here for 3 nights and only made it through 2. Double room was just two single beds pushed together, and windows were very old single glazed where two of them could not even be shut due to how disfigured they had become with age! This meant the room stayed cold all through the night which was really unpleasent. On the third night (which was a friday night) there was live music played downstairs which was incredibly loud. I understand it was a friday evening so if you are someone who will be out late yourself this would not be such a big deal. BUT THIS NEEDS TO BE MADE AWARE TO PEOPLE BEFORE THEY BOOK! As my girlfriend and I do not stay up late, and if we had known this we would not have stayed at this place. It was so loud we actually had to leave and stay in another hotel for the night. Plus considering the issues with the room and then looking at how much we paid for 3 nights which was over £300, when this is compared to a premier inn which is the same price and the standard of the building and room is so much higher means sadly you are overcharged at this establishment for what they provide. One positive was the staff, they were polite and friendly. But the actual building and room itself was awful im afraid to say, and the lack of awareness made about the live music before booking is really inconsiderate to those who would not want that until the late hours of the night.

People smoking weed in the middle of the day in the outdoor eating area and management “looking the other way”. Definitely avoid this place if you want to enjoy your family day out

AVOID Barman was one of the rudest members of staff I have ever encountered.. I found a curly black hair in my food, no apology and he said ‘I pulled the burger apart and put it there” Place should be shut down

Bought a spicy bean burger when eating found a dark hair in the burger when spoke to staff he refused a refund and was very rude,no apology and accused us of putting the hair there never eating there again

Throughly enjoyed the visit to The Market House! The steak pie was like a hug in pie dough! The apple cookie pie was absolutely delicious as well. How they are able to give you this much food for this little price, I have no clue! Very kind service, and was happy to choose it for lunch.

Lovely friendly staff, ok but tasty pub grub - decent price drinks

Absolutely appalled with our experience at 'The Market House' today. Was around 6pm when we arrived and was almost empty with I'd say roughly 10 people maximum and only 3 people eating food. We ordered 3x 'Hand Battered Fish & Chips' which was supposed to come with Tartare Sauce. Honestly speaking I have never been presented with fish and chips as bad as this in my life. If I was the chef I'd be utterly embarrassed at allowing food to even leave a kitchen presented in this manor. The fish 100% was DEFINITELY NOT Hand battered fish. The batter was that burnt and tough I was genuinely concerned for my teeth, the actual fish itself was so dry we struggled to cut through it and tasted like it had been cooked in burnt rancid oil. The chips were actually inedible, rock solid and completely coated again with what looked and tasted like rancid old cooking oil. The mushy peas again looked and tasted like pale green watery slop and the tartare sauce (which I had to ask for) was a vinegar flavoured herby liquid which tasted absolutely foul. I'm surprised i even tried it, it looked that bad. This by the way is after waiting almost 40 minutes with no standard of service from the staff to come and inform us of such a potentially long wait (in an empty restaurant). I, in all honesty could not bring myself to eat such a disgraceful poorly cooked meal which I have no doubt whatsoever would have made me ill! I must also add all 3 plates were luke warm. If this wasn't bad enough, I asked to speak to a manager as it was totally unacceptable food, I was half way through my sentence she decides to walk off with an attitude behind the bar to head to the till with the upmost hight of rudeness, not even apologising for our ridiculously long wait to then receive food I seriously wouldn't even feed my dog. She refused to give me her name and her attitude was absolutely disgusting. I cannot believe you employ people like this who have no social skills whatsoever for such a job in the hospitality industry. This could have been dealt with very differently and I wouldn't have then took the time to even write this review. It makes me sick to think people come here to spend their hard earned money for absolutely disgraceful food and service, you should be ashamed to run an establishment like this. I 100% would advise for your own health to not eat here at this horrific shoddily run restaurant. I have been a manager of many bars and restaurants in Manchester for over 20 years so seeing this level of service really sickens me as majority of people wouldn't take the approach of asking for a full refund when actually your fully entitled too and 100% most certainly should do as then perhaps these places will rethink how they run these so called restaurants in the future. Have been forced to give this 1 Star which it really doesn't deserve as there's no option for 0!

We went In for a bite to eat as staying In Glastonbury for the weekend. The food we ordered was lovely and good size portions. My husband said that the lasagne he had was one of the best he had eaten. The pub was clean, food arrived quickly and the staff were very friendly. We will definitely visit again when back in Glastonbury

Cheap and cheerful, central location. Would have scored higher if there was a designated smoking area outside, rather than people smoking anywhere. Friendly staff.

The long hard bar man didn't explain he was busy and was very abruptly rude and went in the kitchen and laughed to kitchen staff than it took five minutes to come back out

Ordered ultimate chicken tikka and a bacon and cheese burger, absolutely appalled at the presentation of the burnt food! We had missing items from the curry, told staff, they took both plates away and returned with a plate of chips, no offer of a refund. How the chef thought sending food out like that is beyond me, avoid at all costs! 1 star because I couldn't leave - 1

Me and my girlfriend had dinner this when it was ridiculously busy on a concert in the abbey day. The burger came in a take away box, but the burger and chips was really good I was surprised they kept it up the actual food well it was so busy. Definitely I would return.

Took my wife here for lunch today. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a lunch from hell. We ordered fish and chips with extras. When it arrived, the fish and battered sausage were a very dark brown, almost black in colour, i.e., burnt. It was unbelievable that any chef would present a plate of food looking like this, it was horrendous, to be avoided at all costs. It only got one star because I couldn't give it none.

Took my wife and 2 kids for lunch on a Monday and it was pretty awful. The table we sat down at was filthy - it had been cleared but not wiped. The menus were dirty and sticky. Food came in about 20 mins - both kids meals and my chips were luke warm. The kids meals are a meal deal which include a dessert but I was told after the main course at the bar that if I didn't order the desserts with the mains then we couldn't have them. Pathetic. I hadn't been told this and nowhere on the menu does it say this. Honestly, is it really beyond you to go to the kitchen and get 2 bowls with a scoop of ice cream in each? I had deliver the bad news to the kids who had already chosen what they wanted and were of course disappointed. Rounded off a terrible experience.

Friendly staff a nice atmosphere nice food

We arrived at a busy time, so we were told there would be a 40 min wait. Luckily, we only waited 25 mins, and the food arrived piping hot and fresh. Everyone enjoyed their meal, and we left feeling full and satisfied. The prices are competitive for the area, this is why we always eat here when we visit this quaint little town.

I have had a wonderful 3 night stay a The Market House. Lovely all round. Would highly recommend a visit.

Came here with my sister and daughter for our annual trip to Glastonbury. When ordering our food the man taking our order just walked off without a word, no thank no nothing , ver rude. Table was sticky menus were even stickier. Food was warm not hot. Chips looked like they were reheated from days ago. We were all really disappointed with the food. Left after 10 min. Put us off eating for the rest of the day. I would not recommend eating here. If you want a pint and a game of pool then I guess it’s ok but don’t eat here and don’t expect to get any civility from the staff.

This could be a local for me, but I think a few moments of tranquillity need to be set aside for this one. Ordered a chicken and bacon burger for my partner and a vegan burger for me... Jo was given a beef and bacon burger, and I got a double vegan patty burger with uncooked/just defrosted, which was uncooked and inedible beyond food induced vomiting. Nope, not a place for me or, in fact anyone with the slightly murur of a taste bud.

At the end of an hour and half waiting for the food ,decided to ask the money back and gone. Awful, awful

Awful food, meatball sub, cold not sure cooked,no sauted onions , just raw ones. salad off menu apparently all gone bad, meatballs tasteless and I had to ask for spicy sauce as none on half of meatballs....drink I wanted it out of stock...wouldnt go back, staff were friendly. No numbers on table deslite bar stadf insisting they were, only to find out the benches had been rently sanded. The garden was not cared for, and it just felt like a cheap nasty pub....

UPDATE 2: Still waiting months later for the promised contact from the General manager. They really don't care. Spend your hard earned cash elsewhere is my advice. . UPDATE: There is no-one available at the number I was asked to call in the reply to my review who can deal with this. The response is what you might call lip service... Our food last Saturday took almost an hour to arrive, after 2 enquiries and the need to purchase a bag of crisps for the diabetic and young child in the party. The service was less than poor. I received no apology and the barman having been requested to go to the kitchen to enquire about our order chose to stop on the way to serve another customer first. The second enquiry resulted in us being told the food could not be magicked out of thin air. We received the worst breakfast we have ever paid for. The eggs were fried to a crisp, the bacon tasted of burnt charcoal and was rock hard and inedible, the hash browns were soggy and the plates were swimming in margarine where it had been place directly on the plate to be used on the barely cooked toast. Not even deserving of one star.

A mediocre range of beers and too brightly lit to deter drug dealers. The only pub in Glastonbury with TVs to watch football so it gets pretty busy and rowdy at times. Expensive drinks, plenty of better places locally

Mieszkaliśmy w pokoju od strony ulicy (5). Pokój czysty, ciepły i pachnący. Dla mniej wymagających osób będzie jak znalazł. Łóżko, łazienka z prysznicem, czajnik z herbatą i telewizor. Cóż więcej chcieć? Pubu nie było słychać. Samochody i owszem i w nocy przechodzących rozmawiających ludzi, ponieważ okna jak to w GB są liche, ale mi to nie przeszkadzało. Można zjeść i wypić na dole. Obok do wieczora Kebab Bar jak w Polsce. Pysznie i tanio. Sklepy głównie do 16/17. Do Tora jakieś 30 minut spacerem. Obsługa miła. Łazienka czysta. Pokój przytulny. Gorąco polecam 🙂

The 3x small-plate deal served as ample light lunch for 2 & fab selection of local ciders seemed to go down great. Certainly recommend this - affordable good quality friendly, works for any occasion. Let's just go down the MH!!

A very enjoyable experience at The Market House. My room was extremely clean and comfortable. Great location. The staff were amazing. Breakfast was good. Definitely recommend a visit.

Food is acceptable, nothing special at all. Service wasn't great either. Food took 40 minutes to arrive. We won't be coming back here. At the date of our visit there was no Sunday menu despite their web site showing one, so please be aware. This was actually the only reason we booked a table.
