The Marine Restaurant in Scarborough

Came for a little staycation to Whitby & on a whim decided on dinner at The Marine. I have visited 3 years ago which was great btw. I had no reservation and was warmly accommodated. The crab linguine was absolutely amazing and I didn’t leave a morsel as it was too divine. My cocktail French Martini was also spot on. The service, food and decor are excellent. I would highly recommend this place, a true asset to Whitby town. Thank you

We went on a Sunday evening at 6 o’clock, ordered two courses and we were served and finished within 30 mins. I had fish pie and the mash potato was lumpy, which I did point out to the waitress it was far to rushed and it was my birthday meal so very disappointed

I booked a table for 2 in December 2023 for a very special weekend away. We had our meal 9/3/24, my starter of Crab Bonbons was gorgeous, sadly it nosed dived following. The Seafood Linguini was extremely disappointing as there was no evidence of any chilli or garlic, the meal had no taste at all hence not eating it. The Seafood Bisque which my partner had was satisfactory as an alternative to a meal that was not available. Our dessert was the Pear & Frangipane tart with Calvados Cream... totally dry, no flavours with exception of the Calvados Cream. Don't understand how this meal could be so disappointing based on the good reviews of The Marine. Service was good, ambience not noted due to our disappointment of the meal. Not good value at all.

This was our second visit here, after a visit last August. The service was really good and the food excellent. We visited as a family and as well as children’s menu they will do a half portion of some of the main menu items, although a half portion of the crab linguine was enormous. Would highly rate this restaurant and hope to return.

Son and daughter in law always call in here when I’m Whitby so they took us with them. Great place, staff very friendly and the food delicious. Cannot wait until we come again.

We always call in here when in Whitby. It not the cheapest option but it's worth it every now and again. The scallops in particular went down very well and the fish pie was probably the best I've had anywhere. Friendly staff and good wine list too.

So very upset, to report we had a very poor meal tonight 2nd March 2024 celebrating my 60th Birthday - well that didn’t happen. The squid wasn’t cooked the batter was flour bound and not cooked! Staff not attentive or responsive at end of meal - they didn’t charge us for the squid (quite rightly !!) but no apology or regret for the meal served. Definitely would not recommend - sorry

We visited today and had three courses, we had scallops and oysters to start, then mussels and steak for mains , followed by panna cotta and a cheese board and the food was absolutely delicious, not the mention the brilliant hospitality and customer service from Pete, always been our favourite place to eat and stay in Whitby, friendly service from James who is an amazing chef, we will return.

Booked last minute online and opted for the 8pm slot, the restaurant was full and we were greeted by Gary who was attentive and very welcoming for the whole evening, despite being a one man band out front. There is a large wine selection and a great choice of food. We had the scallops and crab bon bons to start and half a lobster and Halibut for mains, all exceptional! Would definitely recommend!

Food was really great, dishes were really decently sized and the staff were very lovely and helpful. Would recommend if you want some more upmarket fish it's definitely worth it.

Excellent food, service and experience. Definitely recommend this restaurant. All staff were polite and made us feel really relaxed and welcome. Food was amazing. Only tip I would say is pre heat the serving plates as the food was steaming hot when brought out but soon cooled.

We actually had a really good meal, the gravlax which was supposed to have beetroot but didn’t ….maybe it was cured in it? Followed by a moules main dish and a clam main dish, both good portions and very tasty. The service was good. For a Friday there were quite a few dishes unavailable though, not an issue for us but did seem a bit odd. Yes, it’s a bit pricey but we really enjoyed it. It looks like it’s on the up after a couple of poorer reviews.

After four years we returned to this restaurant to find it once again did not deliver to the expectations one hopes for. We were very happy with the ambience and the service from the main guy who served us. We both had the scallops to start and these were superb, absolutely delicious. My husband had seafood linguini for main which was tasty and lots of seafood but way too much of it had to be deshelled to the extent the food was nearly cold by the time he’d finished. The main issue was with my monkfish tail with chorizo cassoulet. It was tasty but the haricot beans were hard and when I advised this to what seemed to be the main guy he said ‘they’re supposed to be like that’ and swanned off before we could discuss it any further!! So I ate as much as I could and left half. Our waiter did only charge us half for this dish which was a fair gesture. I have since googled cassoulet recipes and I am unable to find the one used by the chef which says the beans should be hard. I had deconstructed Black Forest gateau cheesecake for dessert (only three to choose from..frangipani, Parkin or cheesecake). This was basically sweetened cream with cherry compote swirled through, with cubes of dry vanilla cake plopped on top and sprinkled with chocolate crumbs. My seven year old grandaughter could’ve made better cake (and a chocolate one given it’s supposed to be Black Forest gateau) and presented the dish better. This is the third time in 8 years we’ve been here and I doubt we will now try again. It’s so disappointing as it has all the potential to be a great restaurant.

Lovely ambience and fantastic menu. The experience or the food however did not meet expectations. The mussels portion was very small with very little sauce to go with. The whole monkfish tail was about a third of a tail and was served with baked beans and little to no chorizo. Prices were high for the quality of the food unfortunately. Frequently visit Whitby but wouldn’t come back to this one.

Really nice spot for lunch! I would recommend the oysters, they were so fresh. I also had the dressed crab, it wasn't something I personally enjoyed as it was cold and the fries were missing. Also, the salad is dressed in balsamic vinegar. Overall I still would come again.

Food was ok, we had mussels and smoked haddock for main which were nice but fried squid for starter was very chewy and tough. Not great value for money. Service was a massive let down for the prices they were charging though. Very slow - waited ages to order, had to ask for water twice. Overall, I feel you can get better in Whitby for less.

Dropped in here unexpectedly on a rainy Wednesday in Whitby and it was delightful. Stylish decor, welcoming staff and delicious food. I had smoked haddock on Colcanon mash, my partner had fish and chips - both were lovely.

This is a venue that we have used several times. Mainly for lunch time dining but occasionally for evening drinks and live music This review is for a recent Sunday lunch. But we have never been disappointed with this venue Our son was visiting along with our granddaughter so we treat them out to Sunday lunch at The Marine We sat in the recently opened upstairs section with fabulous views out to sea We all went with the traditional Sunday roast dinner And was just exactly what you would hope for Served promptly and a good plateful. We had small portions which were enough to fill us. Son had a large and there was a child’s size portion for the granddaughter There were mashed potatoes, roast potatoes plus about four different vegetables, a choice of meats (we all went turkey) and jugs of gravy Basically a proper well cooked well presented Sunday lunch Staff were friendly and attentive There is no doubt that we will be back again

had called in the previous night for evening meal but packed to rafters so decided to return for breakfast. enjoyed English breakfast and salmon and scrambled eggs - both generous portions, well served and presented tasty ingredients. tea and cappuccino also went down well. great location on the front.

This is a bit above the usual restaurants in Whitby, reflected in the prices, but it was definitely worth it. The service was very friendly with great help finding our way around the menu. The scallop starter was simply stunning, the best cooked scallops I have ever tasted. The halibut main course was equally good, served with a delicious leek sauce. This was washed down with a lovely bottle of picpoul. Loved the whole evening and would definitely return

Best oysters I've had in awhile.

We booked online and as it appeared that the early bookings were all taken the earliest we could get a table for two was 8pm. However, when we arrived the restaurant was empty! Queried why we unable to book an earlier table and front of house explained that it was policy to block book all the earlier tables so that diners could 'drop in'! If such a policy exists then this business won't last long! The menu is expensive for Whitby. We ordered the 8 oz Ribeye Steak and The Marine Fish Pie with a side of seared courgettes and other greens. Unfortunately, there were no courgettes in our side and the triple cooked chips with the steak were undercooked and not crisp. This isn't the superb restaurant it was (pre covid) and we won't be going back: the service wasn't great, the food not good enough for the price and absolutely no atmosphere. There are lots of much nicer restaurants in Whitby.

This was the best crab I've ever had! Huge portion, big chunks of crab, full of flavour. Wine was great too. Husband also really enjoyed halibut in gruyère. Would benefit from an extra member of staff but those who served us were great!

Visited this place in 2018 and had a great lunch, never been able to get back in since as its always busy. Managed to book a table for Sunday and noticed how quiet it was. The food was average, add the price of the dishes and that average becomes poor. We had Lobster £50, halibut £38 and linguine £22. All fair prices if cooked to a high standard, however all three dishes were a little lack luster and not what we were hoping for. It may explain the reason it was quite ? The service was excellent, very attenuative and polite. They just need to get the food quality back up there !

The best thing about this restaurant is the view from the outside balcony. On a warm evening its the perfect place to sit and eat dinner. The food is OK too and the service good, but the view is the location is its best point.

Nice place to eat, good food but pretty expensive, £12 for a starter ( even veggie) is quite a lot! The sea bass and side of new potatoes was delicious. The crab linguini had plenty of crab in it.

We were a party of 10, we were asked to order our meal ahead of arriving. When we arrived, the service was very slow. We sat for around 20 minutes before being asked what we wanted to drink. The waiting staff didn't hang around long enough for us to ask for anything else like cutlery, napkins or a additional plate. The food was very expensive, but we were willing to spend the money due to it being a special occasion. However the moules frites and fish and chips were cold. The prawn cocktail was lovely and the dressed crab also. The desserts were overpriced. The chocolate mousse tart was like a skinny Brownie. Just turned up on spec and lucky to get a table but so glad we did. Shared a dozen oysters to start and they were some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Mains of crab linguine and fish pie were both brilliant, along with an ice cold bottle of Sancerre. Service was attentive, but not intrusive, which is perfect for me! Even though they were fully booked later, we were told we had the table for 2 hours which sets you at ease. All in all a excellent experience. Food, service, wine all absolutely perfect. Would recommend

Very disappointed, poor service (very slow) at no point during any part of the meal did anyone actually ask if the food was OK, apologised for being so slow initially claiming a lot of tables had turned up at the same time yet the place was empty when we left.
