The main course in East Lothian

We enjoyed a lovely two course lunch, we had bruschetta to start which was great then I had Risotto which was delicious, my husband had pasta. It was all delightful, definitely worth a visit.

We have visited this restaurant 4 times in the last few weeks, taking friends and family too. We love everything about this restaurant: The staff are wonderful, the food is delicious, the wine and cocktails are wonderful and there is always a brilliant atmosphere no matter if you visit on a week day or the weekend.

So after nearly 14 months of lock down restrictions 4 missed birthday celebrations Saturday was the night . One special request was to bring a very special bottle of red wine and that was not a problem at all . Arrived Luciano welcomed us with a warm Italian welcome and made us feel comfortable from the start. Food and service was outstanding my Surf and Turf main course was outstanding. Totally worth a visit if I’m Gullane/East Lothian.

Lovely restaurant in a beautiful setting.Very busy for lockdown and serving staff rushed off feet. Maybe look at customer and server ratio.Food was good, wine was ok but nothing spectacular like it was when it opened.Maybe a bad visit but will try again!

went there on a whim and had an excellent meal. we shared scallops as a starter which were beautiful, perfectly cooked with interesting flavours with a sauce that though simple was perfectly executed. main courses were sea bass and spagetti carbonara, both excellent and again not over complicated but well executed. portions are big so I could only manage coffee but my partner couldn't resist an affogato. having been in the 'trade' for many years I thought the standard was very good and offered excellent value. will definitely return

Being in Covid Tier 2 had stopped us eating out in Edinburgh, so we started looking at restaurants closer to home. It was a friends recomendation after they had done a negative review of another restaurant in Gullane and said, they had wished they had gone back to The Main Course. This perked my interest, so we booked a lunch there and it was excellent. Italian it may be but this is not your usual italian. My wife had the chickory starter folowed by cod with a herb crust, whilst I had scallops to start followed by short pasta with seafood. I couldn't fault these dishes at all. I also had a desert which was carrot cake but not as you'd know it. Still a great desertWe also had a bottle of Primitivio. I am quite a fan and this was one of the better ones I've tried.Service was great and all social distinsing was in place. Parking was right outside the door.All in all, great food and one of the first meals I've had since Covid where it felt almost like normal. Well Done The Main Course

Always a genuine cheery, warm welcome from Luciano and the staff which only adds to the lovely atmosphere in this restaurant. The screens put in place for COVID measures are effective and unobtrusive. The food, as always, is creative and tasty with a lot of choices.

We came here for a birthday celebration. The restaurant was quite busy, staff were attentive food was good we will definitely return when you can enjoy a lovely glass of wine.

My wife and I ate here for lunch the other week and were very impressed with the standard of food. It was authentic Italian and bursting with flavour. We each had three courses, a drink each and coffee and the bill was surprisingly cheap. Will definitely be back.

We ate here twice in one week; it’s that good! We were a group of four adults and one baby and everyone equally enjoyed their food. Of particular note was the burrata starter, the MEZZE MANICHE SALSICCIAE GORGONZOLA pasta and all the pizzas! My son, who is only 14 months, sampled a lovely spaghetti bolognese and the fish and chips, both generous and tasty portions for a child’s dish. We also loved the cosmopolitan cocktails and the chocolate tart dessert. The staff were fantastic, couldn’t have been more helpful, especially with a young baby, and during these COVID times, we felt entirely comfortable in the restaurant. Thanks to all!

Service was desperately slow, as a result of which two (intended hot) dishes were cold. So expensive and disappointing

My husband and I have just had a really delicious lunch at the Main Course.. The food was really amazing especially the prawns, mussels and fish..A wonderful meal !!!!

Visited on Sat 25th July with friends who stay locally. All the staff were friendly & welcoming. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I loved the Bruschetta with parma ham, avocado & mascarpone. Good portion sizes too. The waiters were all very friendly & attentative. All in all a very enjoyable meal.

I live in a neighbouring town and as its lockdown I've only had takeaway. I cannot wait to visit the restaurant when it's back open. The food is beautiful, flavourful and the portions are generous. I cannot speak highly enough of th9s restaurant ❤️❤️❤️

We had a thoroughly excellent meal here. The restaurant is very pleasant and the staff managed to get us a table at short notice. All the pasta we tried was delicious, particularly the ravioli (best we've had to date).

A lovely meal, bustling atmosphere, and great service- I even got to borrow a pair of reading glasses! Ten out of ten- thanks!

Food was lovely and tasty and I enjoyed it all. However these were small portions in the two course deal and I am glad we ordered extra sides.The main thing that let this place down was the staff - male waiting staff were grumpy, arrogant and lacking in customer focus. For that reason I am unsure I will go back

Are here with my partner and mum inlaw recently. The food was good but for the price a little disappointing. The main courses we had were nice but the starters we had were better. While it's still a great place to eat it was a little under par.

We have eaten here before when visiting family and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Having decided to eat here again tonight we were left feeling just a bit disappointed.Let me be clear our starters were absolutely beautiful...scallops and the lamb ragu pasta ( main course special served as a starter).Mum enjoyed her main course of lamb despite her wanting it cooked more than the recommended medium - sorry chef she doesn't like pink.To be fair I had misread the menu so when I received a braised venison dish rather than a seared piece of venison I was a little taken aback. The venison was very tender and the braised fennel was nice but the dish was a bit boring.Pork tenderloin for my chap - looked like a very small portion of pork, puree that it was presented on was a bit on the thin side and he said the whole dish felt like something was missing... We had to ask for our side order as it didnt arrive with mains. Service was generally good but I'm sorry this meal just didnt live up to our previous experience in your restaurant .

The food here was delicious. My partner & I visited for lunch and ordered pizza with parma ham and buffalo mozzarella and a dish of pork. We then had a mango & coconut cheesecase and an almond cake. Everything was so delicious and moderately priced. Will definetely re-visit and will tell friends about it. Do not think twice about this. Just do it and you won't be disappointed.

Turned up on 2nd January and asked for lunch. They were closing but still offered us a service. Soup and pate for starters and Ravioli for main course. Fabulous food. Thank you for the table and excellent service. This is our second time here and have never been disappointed.

In Gullane a very nice wee town to visit ! I had for starters - the liver pate, was fab, came with 2 pieces of toast, I needed more ! And was not a problem. Mains I had the calzone was great, enjoyed it My other half had the duck pasta I had a taste and it was very nice something for me next time.Nice venue, nice staff and worth a visit

Excellent Italian restaurant in Gullane. A good lively atmosphere, with a bit of bustle, and very efficient friendly staff. Food is really tasty and beautifully served, wine list is also perfectly acceptable. Overall decor is smart and easy on the eye. Would certainly recommend this to friends.

On the main drag in Gullane, this restaurant is a littler gem! It was recommended by my host, and I was not disappointed. The calamari starter came wrapped in a perfect light batter, and mains of halibut served with green vegetables and shoulder of lamb were equally delicious. Service was attentive without being intrusive - all in all a very pleasant early evening dining experience.

Lovely authentic food, good choice of wine and all at a reasonable price. Will go back when next staying in Gullane.

Staff were excellent and I have to say one of the best rib eye steak I've had locally for a long time! Definitely a return soon

Regularly dine here and it never fails to deliver. Food is excellent and well priced. Service is attentive but not smothering. Can't wait for our next visit.

We are here our first night In Gullane. Service was good and the food was very tasty. I would give it a five star except for the noise level Once the restaurant filled up it was hard to hear

Last minute decision to go out for dinner. So pleased that we booked The Main Course. Been here once before and don't know why we left it so long to return. Lovely decor, friendly staff and although the restaurant was full the service was really good. The food was excellent and one of the few menu's I've seen where I found it difficult to choose, because there was so much that I liked. Only downside is that it's very noisy. Last time we came we were seated in the middle of the restaurant but this time we were in the window so that may have been the reason

I really enjoyed the food, the wine and the whole evening at this very good restaurant.

Not been for a while and was delighted that the standard of food and service is still excellent. As a pescetarian I found the menu choices extensive and the food delicious, starters, mains and the desserts. And I have to mention the wine list; an excellent range of good wines at reasonable prices. Can't wait to go back!

Visited here on Sunday 1st September not having booked & were shown to a table . We enquired if small / child’s portions could be ordered & were told starter portions of some dishes were available . We also asked if they did a child’s size of pizza & were told yes . We were a party of 4 (retired ) adults . When someone eventually came to take our order we requested one small child’s size pizza & the other 3 mains were normal size portions (2 lasagne & 1 bolognaise) . When the pizza arrived it looked really big so we did ask was this a child’s size pizza & were told yes it is . The food was all very nice , though the pizza proved too big & the rest was shared out between all of us . When the bill came we then saw we had been charged for a full size pizza which we queried to then be told that only children can be served child portions . The manager came over & started being extremely rude , he asked what we would expect to pay & when about £7 was mentioned ( instead of £9.75)he just laughed & said he would not even get out of his bed to do that ! He said he could not have everyone coming in & wanting child portions and would not listen when we tried to point out that his staff agreed we could order a small size & had accepted our order for a child’s pizza when it was obvious we were all adults ! Even if he had agreed that his staff were wrong & apologised for this mistake we would have accepted this but he just continued being rude . Whatever happened to keeping the customer satisfied ?! All I can now say is we will not be returning ( even though 2 of our party had just moved to live nearby ) & will be warning our friends & family of the appalling attitude by this manager (? Owner ) .

Seven of us all had something different of a varied menu, and we were all very happy indeed. Top notch pizzas, tasty lamb and mussels, classic simplae pastas, nice house wines. Freindly helpful staff, good buzz but nothing to interfere with a great night out. Mid range prices but some of the foodies in the group were very happy indeed.

We went with my parents, and my kids for my dad's birthday. Was aware straight away off how friendly the staff were. Was also extremely impressed by how children friendly it felt from the start. Was some of the most amazing Italian food have had in a long time. Will definitely be back. Only comment could make is that the menu for children could go slightly further. (This definitely does not mean I am saying stay away if you have kids). It is I noticed popular still with families and kids as well as just adults, and I would return as a family. I would just say possibly the menu for (more so younger kids could be varied)

Driving through Gullane and thought we should stop for food. This is a lovely restaurant and great service. The interior decor of restaurant is beautiful. The food was really nice and service was prompt. Try the risotto with gorgonzola. Pasta was al dente. The staff were polite and friendly. Will definitely go again.

We have a large group we bring every year, and they always do a fabulous job. Food excellent, service outstanding. We look forward to to returning for another great meal.

I have to start my review by saying that they have the best chips I have ever eaten. A bold claim, I know. Their parmesan and truffle chips are the BEST. They are absolutely soaked in fat and terrible for your health but worth every mouthful.

was very disappointed after getting a good recommendation from a friend, ordered king scallops for starter, what turned up was 3 little queen scallops, nicely cooke but most definitely not king scallops, my partners fresh mozzarella with pickled veg was great, in fact the highlight of the meal, the main courses though were terrible, my saddle of rabbit was well over cooked and very dry, my partners "king" scallop risotto had 2 more of the tiny scallops on it and barely another one through it though the risotto was padded out with boiled egg white, the rice was poor and tasted more like rice pudding rice, for the prices they charge I would have expected far better, won't be hurrying back

Visited The Main Course in Gullane on Sunday with relatives who come from The Netherlands, London and France and are used to eating in good restaurants... They raved about this restaurant saying the food and wine were excellent..

Came here with friends and loved it. We ate from the lunch menu and were impressed with the portions he quality of the food and the service.

We dined here midweek and ate at 7.30pm. The restaurant was busy but our reserved table was set up and ready. They follow the trend of charging a cover for bread, which i think is neither good nor bad, but we had some and it was good. The food was of good quality and i enjoyed the Aubergine starter. My lamb was tasty but the Pasta dish that was supposed to be spicy was very bland. We did not make it to desert. Our friends ordered some special Scotch but were disappointed by the meagre pour. The wines were fine and not outrageous. Service was pleasant and efficient and we enjoyed the fact that we were staying around the corner and did not have to drive anywhere. There is street parking available though.

This restaurant was recommended to us and we were very pleased . In fact we dined twice for dinner. It was a pleasure to have friendly, knowledgeable staff, who obviously enjoy where they work. A very extensive wine list. The serving size was perfect, well presented and delicious. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

The Main Course is a perfect combination of everything you want in a restaurant. The food is exquisite: delicious and beautifully presented. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The prices are not cheap, but the value is evident in every delicious bite.

A real unexpected find in the small town of gullane! Who knew there would be such a good Italian restaurant hidden in amongst all of the other great eateries East Lothian has to offer.

We have come to expect a great time at The Main Course and our family meal there last night was no exception. The food is consistently excellent and the service is welcoming. The staff are extremely good at what they do and again they are consistently great. Can’t wait to go back!

As it was pouring with rain we decided that morning to celebrate my husband’s birthday by going out for lunch instead of dinner. We were made very welcome by the staff and each enjoyed a memorable seafood platter which included lobster caught that day.

Enjoyed fixed price lunch menu which was good value and of excellent quality. Having said that the cost of drinks was way over the top e.g. £4.50 for a half pint of Moretti (the only draft beer/lager on offer is, to say the least, excessive. As was the small house wine and soda priced at £8.55. These prices would, in most people’s eyes, be seen as excessive and rather soured the taste of an otherwise pleasant experience. I’ve rates the ‘overall value’ as 3 - the food was higher than this but the drinks considerably lower!

Fabulous Italian food served at very convenient times. I now have a great place to go to for my meals in Gullane. The staff is wonderful, the decor is refreshing and clean smelling. The bathrooms, which in my opinion are an indication of kitchen conditions, are pristine and inviting.

We decided to try the lunch menu here as it looked tasty and good value. Portion size was perfect for me but hubby was still hungry afterwards. The food was delicious though, full of flavour. Great price too. The two men who served us were really friendly and interacted with our wee boy which was nice. Will definitely go back.

We have eaten here a few times now. The first time was excellent. Sadly since then nothing has even come up to par. I think a lot has been lost since the refurbishment and expansion.

As a Coeliac this venue was a rare treat, with excellent knowledge and care from all staff. Wonderful, imaginative Italian food and plenty of Gluten Free options.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here once again. The lunch menu offered plenty nice options. I enjoyed bruschetta, followed by steak then a caramel sundae. All thoroughly enjoyable. Great service and good value. Look forward to returning soon!

This family run Italian restaurant is ideally placed to cater for golfing groups as is in the main st of Gullane-an area that boasts at least 8 great golf courses within a taxi ride away and is ideal for a post game dinner.

We all enjoyed the excellent food and friendly attentive service. The place was full with a great mix of young and old. The quality of the food certainly did not suffer. There were 4 generations at our table! I would strongly recommend a visit to The Main Course.

Visited with aparty of 8 golfers and were well catered for by the staff. Menu had a range of choices to suit everyone's taste and everything was well prepared.

Friends suggested this restaurant and we went to dinner there together and had a quite excellent meal. I loved my main course of pasta with monkfish and nduja and the other three in the party all said their meals were very good too.

We received a warm welcome at the door and that friendliness continued throughout our visit. The menu was varied, I enjoyed the monthly regional menu which carried cuttlefish, sweetbreads and veal amongst others. The mai menu was equally exciting and varied. The service was committed and knowledgeable. The resataurant itself is airy and well appointed and we couldn’t help but notice the warm welcome the many regulars received. Clearly a regular destination for many.

My husband and 7 year old son visited whilst staying in North Berwick as a recommendation and we were not disappointed. Staff were wonderful, very attentive and explained the menu and specials. They made us very welcome as a family. The food was delicious - Barrata is a must! And my son said it was the best pizza ever. We will definitely return. I would recommend you book a table as it’s a little gem not to be missed.

As usual the food was excellent, the service was really amazing.. The staff are so friendly and helpful... The dessert was the best I have ever tasted....We have been going to this restaurant since it opened and find it consistently good.

This authentic Italian restaurant features excellent food with a caring and exuberant staff. The black truffle menu was superb and we were intrigued enough by a series of regional menus to return the following week. Every month or so, Luciano presents a tasting menu: this time the food of Lazio. Partner was thrilled to sample cuttlefish as a starter. He was able to enjoy the sweetbreads as a main as Luciano allowed him to alter the menu. The pork belly starter could never woo me away from it to sample anything else. This is now our favorite local spot and we will return often. Starting 24 February, Lombardia takes center stage. I've already chosen the ossobuco, but I'll call ahead as last Sunday they ran out of the veal.

Visited for a meal with friends. The welcome, service, food and staff friendliness was all top notch. We thought the food was different and outstanding. Definitely will return soon.

Wonderful food celebrating black truffle season. One of the best meals I gave eaten, just perfect in every way. Great choice and originality in the menu. Service knowledgable and efficient. Great value , don’t miss it next year!

We have been already twice with the whole family and we had a wonderful experience! The staff is friendly and professional and the food is delicious! We are italian and this restaurant feels like home. Highly recommended, we will go back for sure!!!

Food first class, also excellent service, but very noisy on the Saturday evening before we left. As it is a restaurant, with a licence to serve alcohol presumably with a meal I did not like the fact that one or two very loud customers, who after they eaten and left their table stood and and continued drinking where the drinks were prepared. We had alcohol but we had it at the table with our meal .

This is an excellent restaurant all round. We were here on a Sunday afternoon with 2 kids & the staff could not have been any more accommodating of us & were very attentive to the children.

Returned with my family and enjoyed the 3 course special which is good value with plenty nice choices. Great service as usual. Highly recommended!

Excellent everything...food was creative and delicious, menu selection was incredible, drink menu original and the service world class.

Went for dinner last night with 3 others. Made sure to tell the staff I was gluten free(from necessity), and ordered a rather nice courgette soup, with gluten free pasta as the main course.I enjoyed the soup so much I was really surprised that the penne piccante pasta was undercooked and so full of chilli that it was inedible. The 3 other meals which arrived looked very nice. When the waiter asked if everything was ok I told him the pasta was too spicy; his response “well it’s not the first one we’ve served today”. He was really nasty to me after that . If I’d been on my own I would have walked out. No point running a restaurant if your waiters are rude to people. Equally surprising, I’d eaten lunch there only two weeks before, and had had an excellent lunch with good service(from a different waiter.) Take the risk if you’re feeling brave, I for one don’t tolerate rude waiters.

It was very busy, packed out but the noise levels were unacceptable and we were hoarse from shouting. We couldn’t even hear the waiter read out the specials and the waiter couldn’t hear us either and got drinks order wrong. My advice to the restaurant is to get sound survey done and cushion the acoustics.

We live in neighbouring village and have eaten here many times, for family lunches and dinners and also with groups of friends.

This place is way beyond a five star. If you haven't been, you are massively missing out. To avoid disappointment, book!! (Just in case)

This was our first time visiting despite only living a few miles away. We'd heard good thing and we were not disappointed. The menu is amazingly varied - something for everyone, from pizza and pasta to more sophisticated fish and meat dishes. All our food was beautifully presented and tasted fabulous. The staff were lovely - friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back - with the rest of the family.
